What's worrying for Florida is the people testing positive are young and don't need hospitalization. Why is that worrying? Florida has a very large elderly population the virus hasn't touched yet. The worse the community spread gets, the higher the chance that elderly population could get hit very hard. And with the States hospitals running at a high capacity they could fill up very quickly.
Its obvious places like Florida and Arizona have done a piss poor job of controlling community spread. Hopefully they quickly learn from it.

All the handwringing about "cases". Have we all learned nothing these past three months? Death totals continue trending down nationwide, and are barely ticking up in these areas that have "lots of cases" now (EDIT, I was wrong on this; they're not "barely ticking up" in those areas; they're flat or even slightly down! Ans what a real devastating hotbed Arizona is... they reported a whopping one death today..). The answer is still the same as it should have been all along: Take precautions to protect the elderly and immunocompromised while leaving everyone else the fuck alone.

Stop it. "Not sure how". Even in the 85+ age bracket the vast majority who are infected survive. Come on. You have to know this by now. We don't all have to act like Don Lemon sobbing like a small child upon finding out Chris Cuomo had barely-symptomatic (if at all, I can't even remember now) COVID.

I know 2 people that died from this myself. It really just sounds to me like some of you just don't care enough about the people that can pass away from this. It is understandable as humans are selfish in nature. People are free to go out yes, but would it kill you to wear your mask around others trying to get groceries? Is it really asking that much?

I wear a mask when I go out so that in the off chance I carry the virus I don't infect others. It is the least I can do (literally) but I do it because I'm just a bit thoughtful. The fact you call it a muzzle or that it infringes on your rights is something else though. That and lashing out like that.

Im doing the best thing I can to avoid spreading it.........not being around people lol. I only go out to get groceries and ride my bike in the neighborhood. Going back to my classes in the fall is going to be weird.

I am in the take precaution camp. I am in voluntary quarantine for 2 weeks after arriving to a new country. Wore a mask and stayed a couple of meters away from anyone. Going to meet individual friends in private settings only.
Even if those measures is half effective, if most people do their part, they help end this thing faster.
Otherwise we will be in and out of lockdowns forever as we wait for the elusive vaccine most of my Nature published biologist friends deem fairly unlikely.

For some people its like asking them to cut an arm off.
They think taking Covid seriously means you need to live a life of fear. When its really the complete opposite. Everyone taking little precautions like wearing a mask means more people can enjoy a normal life without worrying about Covid.

Yeah, I eat breakfast, then I have a second wave at lunch time. Sometimes a third wave of food comes in the evening, but that makes me fat. I wear my mask at bedtime so food doesn't fall in my mouth.
It's just a token false panic lie. Sorry. Hopefully more lies will be caught in direct daylight so we can see how much of a scam it all is. I'll get my coat.

My dude, the US is still in the first wave. The media will cling to whatever gets them the most views. That was covid until it plateaued so they switched to covering the protests, now that protests are becoming the usual every day, they switch to covid again because cases are going up dramatically. They just want views aka $$$

This is a terrible way to look at it. The right way to look at it is that young people test positive, they stay away from the old folks for a couple of weeks, and they move on. We want young, healthy people, to get this virus and get it over with. We cannot keep society in a bubble forever.

I don't know about where you are but in the UK we're now down to double-figures for deaths during the quiet weekend and even the week is looking like it'll be there soon and still I have work colleagues not wanting to come in. It's really not enormously far from the car crash death rates at this point. We absolutely need to re-acquaint ourselves with risk.
The current situation is a result of an inability to understand different types of risk. The problem is that the media (and by extension the public) panics like crazy over the hot new thing, and emotion overtakes reason and prevents a rational response. Deaths caused by a fucked economy are in the future so we don't have to think about them, there's a paralysing focus on the present which prevents long-term planning because to plan for the long term would be callous. Nobody will make difficult decisions any more. That's a big factor behind western decline frankly.

I agree, but I have to point out that COVID cases are not going up dramatically. You can look at any logarithmic scale to see that. Things are still plateau'd. There are mild increases in case counts, which anyone would have told you was going to happen as things open up, and more people get tested. The question is, for the millionth time, can hospitals take care of people who need to be taken care of.
"No new cases ever" is an impossible standard. It is a clown world standard for a virus that isn't very dangerous for the vast majority of working people. We need to move on with our lives. The media is focusing on raw case counts without context because it drives hysteria.

Yep. The death counts are still trending slightly downward (or at worst flat) even in these "new scary hotbed areas". That doesn't work for driving their narrative though.

Went to the Dentist today. Stood at the clinic counter to pay for the visit and watched a pair of folks trying to get a COVID test. The receptionist told them that they're welcome to, but unless they have a full set of symptoms they'll only get their results in 3 months. The backlog for testing is immense.
But, on the good news side, my Dentist happily relayed the story of some family of his that got COVID. 4 kids, 2 adults, 1 elderly person. All pulled through.

And even in the new scary hotbed areas, what's actually going on? The majority of cases are young people. People for whom this thing is basically zero risk. Most of them don't even know they have it. Obviously more young people are going to get it as their lives return to normal and they see friends after being cooped up inside for months. All this muh scary florida, muh scary south carolina numbers is just a big nothing.
They're trying to prime us for a second lockdown to cause more chaos and break us psychologically.

Sorry, I should've specified that I meant cases are going up significantly in specific states. I believe so far those states and states with them going down have kind of cancelled each other out, but it's increasing again now. I don't have the data in front of me right, though.

More or less, right. The thing is, instead of 75 year olds with COPD getting it, where it is a serious issue, it is now healthy 30 year olds, where it is not an issue. Which we all knew was going to happen, like when the flu goes around annually.

The media is going to be the media, but we know that deaths trail infection rates. Hopefully some of the new developments and treatments keep the death rate low.

You misunderstood what i was saying. Its great that more people are getting the virus without needing hospitalization, but Florida has done a poor job of controlling the spread in its communities. People aren't following the rules anymore and its showing. The more people walking around with the virus the greater chance of them coming into contact with the large at risk population. If Florida had the hospital resources for a rise in cases from its at risk population this wouldn't be a problem, but it doesn't.
Florida was doing fine when people were following the rules after the reopening. Now?

Not so much. Society doesn't need to be in a bubble, but the spread needs to be controlled or you risk losing control.

However, DeSantis pointed out that even with the same number of tests, the percent positive was accelerating faster, which he said was evidence of transmission, especially among the younger demographic.

Congrats on your grandma. Did she test positive for antibodies, or is she currently positive?
I unfortunately expect hospitalizations to start picking up in the next 1 - 2 weeks in places like Florida, and then deaths to follow suit a couple weeks later, but I have more hope that it won't be a NY/Italy type situation.
Also, hard to rely on some of these hospitalization and death numbers with some of these governors. We already see thousands more pneumonia deaths than would be expected, and Desantis is now pushing to not count all ICU patients as ICU patients.
