Sorry for bumping this thread, but I need a non spoilery place to talk about ME's reception.
NO SPOILERS PLEASE
I didn't follow the Internet's reception of ME1 and ME2 before playing ME2, so I don't know how big was the bitching for those games.
What I saw of ME3 so far pleases me but it seems that people here are quite negative. Was it like that for ME2?Are people excited for ME3?I know I am.
Basically I want less negativity and more rejoicing, why is GAF so negative.![]()
Most people who liked Mass Effect weren't impressed with the direction Mass Effect 2 took. Nothing about Mass Effect 3 has made it seem like it'll be more like the first than the second so there's no need to get excited.
Definitely has more RPG elements than ME2 did, larger Citadel than even ME1, and more squad banter![]()

What is the direction ME2 took exactly?I never quite understood what people meant by that.
Is it the lack of planet exploration, lack of weapons mods or armor customization?

Is it the lack of MAKO planet exploration, lack of weapon mods or armor customization?Because I can live without those things.
And ME2 was GOTY here on GAF, so there must have been some people who liked it.
YES!!

Get it out of the way: GAF's Relationship with the Mass Effect games in a Nutshell
I feel there's a majority who still loves ME2 (me included) the people who hate it are just a bit (understatement of the year) more vocal.
It's a shame, there used to be discussion about the lore and what not if new video's pop up, nowadays it revolves around who can insult bioware the most
Yeah when I see this thread, I'm thinking a ME3 hype thread with minimal leak discussion would be a good thing. Not sure if this is allowed though.
(and recruitment missions felt like they got worse after the initial awesome Garrus recruitment)
Samara had a pretty good one if you ask me. Of course the combat got pretty boring by that point in time but the overall the design was not bad.
Edit: Well Samara herself wasn't feature all that much in it either. But it had a mix of talky bits and action which kind of makes better than a lot of the other recruitment missions.
I don't like threads like this because it's like a 'free speech zone' has been created. If people want to bitch about Mass Effect then they should do it in ME threads. If a ME thread is full of bitching then I think that says something about the franchise that needs to be said.
All I want is weapon and armor loot. Is that too much to ask for?No, i think it says something about how overreacting GAF is in general. The hate is nowhere that bad outside of this forum.
Yet, wasn't this supposedly planned a trilogy from the start? If so, why then did Bioware have most of the things that carried over from ME1 into ME2 as an email? Why didn't they road map it better? It's just really, really disappointing that they dropped the ball so badly on it all. It's not easy making the second chapter of a trilogy, especially when you have to take into account the choices of the first game and prepare for the third game.

I mean, catching up on the Rachni with the contact on Ilium was better than an email, but it was one quick conversation with someone that didn't even matter. : \

You can see we will definitely encounter the Rachni queen in ME3 from the trailers.
Lore has been cast aside for tits and ass and dudebro.
There were some interviews a while back where Ray Muzyka and Greg said a lot of decisions you made in ME1 won't necessarily show up in ME2, but will in ME3. The Rachni is evidence of that too.

There weren't tits and ass in ME, no siree!
That, or Bioware will just create a 2nd random out of nowhere Rachni queen for those guys with slightly different dialogue.
While potentially very cool, that just further cements my feeling of ME2s status being "shit guys, we promised a trilogy! What can we do for the middle!?"
They actually didn't expect people to import their saves as much. (50% imported their saves, which is lot of people considering you need two games)
They've taken that into account and I doubt we will see as much emails in ME3.
This is a non spoiler zone, be careful.
I never felt loot was an important part of ME(more of an annoyance to me, but to each his own I suppose) but I think I read that there will be weapon modifiers in ME3.
Oh, there was, but it wasn't the focus.
ME2 wasn't pointless, it's the "calm" before the storm (not very calm because mankind is under threat but the rest of the galaxy is doing as usual).I expect more emails, frankly. Emails are the easiest way to show off "Hey! Look! We paid attention to your choices!" while having it impact the game minimally.
Bioware has realized that having choices carry over from game to game creates a situation where the matrix of possibility gets way too large, so they've been minimizing it as much as possible.
In the end, I doubt the scenarios will differ that much. At the very least, the "big" choice at the end of ME2 will mean nothing.
Going off solely the promo materials, the crew from ME2 means nothing at all, as they won't be core squad members this time around.
Basically, ME2 was pointless. Lair of the Shadow Broker and Arrival advanced the plot a little, but that's it.
It wasn't the focus of ME2 either, squad relationships was the focus.I don't see how the lore was cast aside. If anything there's more lore since we visit the Terminus Systems.
