Massive Fire in High Rise Apartment in London

Tbf, whilst sprinklers help, it's not clear if they would have made much difference in this case, or so I heard another expert say. Not to excuse the people covering their arse.

If the people who caused this get away with it (i.e. anything but life in jail) all it'll do is embolden other companies and councils to stick to their guns. It's sickening how likely them getting away with it realistically is.

Most of them will get away with it though -

I think any enquiry should have permission to audit, and publish, every single transaction involved, along with any potential conflicts of interest between contractors, council and the 'arms-length' housing association.

Contractors should have to reveal exactly how much profit they made from public money, but commercial confidentiality will take precedence over lives lost.

Also the express news paper (although it's not exactly a reliable source)

The 150 figure was mentioned on C4 by Lilly Allen talking to Jon Snow. He said they heard the same, but was clearly cautious.

It was 180 missing yesterday morning, but quite a few have been found or taken to hospital.

Yep. I doubt anything will actually happen. They will hold a quick and simple "investigation," get a few already-rich managers to move jobs then call it a day.

In other words, that fucking Daily Mail tweet is the most horrid thing I've ever seen in "journalism." If they went out of business tomorrow I'd hold a party to celebrate.

Let me look into this and I'll get back.

EDIT: Jon Snow (Channel 4) hearing from those on the scene that this is the figure being talked about.

Ah, okay....thank you for clarifying for us.

Lilly Allen said it on Channel 4 news as told to her by Police. John Snow (in reply) seemed to suggest he'd heard similar whilst also saying we should wait for confirmation.

Strange that information would be passed on to Lilly Allen of all people before anyone else.

Regardless, horrifying news.

I'm sure it wasn't passed to her to pass on. The procedure is not to give out numbers until they are confirmed, for obvious reasons. The truth is that no one know but the guesses are getting both more informed and larger.

In a situation where a fire goes from a spark to a 27 storey fireball in 15 minutes, anything that could have given even just one more family just a little more time to escape would have been worth it imo.

I don't see how they wouldn't. At the very least in should have slowed the fire's ingress from the outside cladding, and might have slowed the spread from the point of ignition to the cladding in the first place. Even if the end result of the destruction of the building was the same, anything that slowed the internal spread of fire could have saved lives.

I'm even more appalled at the lack of building wide fire alarms. How the hell can a high-rise building refurbished in the 21st century not have a proper fire alarm system?

Why was the recommendation of installing sprinklers on existing buildings turned down by a coroner? Austerity? This seems like a no-brainer for such a large building.

Reading one guy was rescued but went back up to the 14th floor to phone family and died.

These stories are heartbreaking. One guy lost his entire family mother, father, sister and two brothers.

Apparently the sister made her last call to one of her relative to say their entire house was engulfed in fire and they where in the bathroom were it hadn't reached yet. I think they were on the 17th floor.

Always the first comment is some dickhead calling out the person because he's rich. Such twats.

Yeah -- total scumbag move. Looks like they put up an article about it:

Manchester City and England winger Raheem Sterling is to make a substantial donation to those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire.

The 22-year-old grew up in north west London, starting his career at QPR.

A fire that engulfed the block of flats killed at least 17 people, a figure expected to increase.

Sterling told the BBC: "This is a deep and sad situation, one that's close to my heart and hard to swallow. I would like to help in the best way I can."

He added: "It is only a small step, but small steps lead to big changes if we all come together.

"My condolences to the affected families, also the individuals who lost their homes."

Queens Park Rangers' Loftus Road Stadium is a mile away from Grenfell Tower.

What tweet?

They tweeted out the name and pics of an Ethiopian man who's fridge started the fire (possibly). Pics of him with a pint of beer in the son. Implication was - Look at this guy, he's responsible, drinking pints while people burn. Story is he packed a bag before leaving his flat and alerting neighbours, obviously unconfirmed.

Assume that's the tweet in question.

edit: not the name

They have an article too: http://www.*****************/news/a...ty-fridge-started-Grenfell-Tower-inferno.html

How do they manage to get pictures so fast?

thanks for the laugh
the sad thing is a lot of old council builds are much more solid and well built than the timber framed paper walled pop up flats that sell for the best part of a million quid in london.

Hm, haven't heard that story. I've heard of the story though with the Syrian refugee who was fleeing with his brother but they got separated in the stairwell due to the smoke. He then went back up to their 14th floor apartment where he phoned his relatives "the fire is coming now. Goodbye".

He was apparently the first victim confirmed of the fire.

He survived Assad only to be killed in a tower block in London': First victim of Grenfell fire is Syrian refugee Mohammed al-Haj Ali
The first victim of the Grenfell Tower fire has been named as Syrian refugee Mohammad al-Haj Ali, whom grieving friends say "came here for a better life" but the UK "failed him".
Mohammed al-Haj Ali, a civil engineering student at the University of West London, was separated from his older brother Omar on the stairs as they tried to escape the inferno engulfing the 24-storey block.

The 23-year-old was behind Omar but after was overwhelmed by the smoke.

He returned alone to their flat on the 14th floor, where he was trapped for two hours. He made phonecalls to friends and family at home in war-torn Syria before sending one final message that read: "The fire is here now, goodbye".

Friends confirmed Omar, a 25-year-old business student, made it out alive and is recovering from smoke inhalation in Kings Cross hospital. However, Mohammed was lost in the chaos and has not been heard from since.

[...]
"We in the UK are not prepared for major incidents. We think it will never happen to us. We're good at putting loads of rules and regulations and making people pay service charge and housing tax but we're not good at being practical and planning for the worst".

The brothers, along with their younger brother Hashem, 20, two sisters and parents fled Daraa, in southern Syria – the cradle of the revolution against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad – three years ago. They were granted asylum in the UK.

“He survived Assad, the war in Syria, only to die in a tower block in London. There are no words,” said Mr Almashi.

Marjorie Bahhaj, a friend of the brothers, said: “This is horrible after all he has been through and a place of safety leads to his death. From a government that starts war with its citizens to our government that neglects building regulations... when will all leaders care for their citizens?

“It feels we, as British, let him down – he was supposed to be safe with us.”

The Daily fail tries to pin some blame on Green regulations on tomorrows front cover. Pricks.

Oh, really. Since we're going there, let's go there.

Kensington & Chelsea is a Tory council. The Tories let someone else manage a public good and botch it. A Tory mayor cut fire service funding and was on camera belittling a Labour assembly member when getting asked about it. The Tories have been in "government", cutting services, for seven years. And the receipts for THOSE are littered throughout this thread.

Labour holds only seven council seats to the Tories' 40. The Greens have one MP in the entire country. But yeah. The Greens did it.

Yes you're right. I may have misread or the story was updated where I read it.

Smoke from the cladding will probably be the biggest cause of death.

Nick Paget-Brown, the Conservative leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council has said sprinklers were not installed because "there was not a “collective view” among residents in favour of sprinklers."

As per The Guardian.

I... uh... he better have something fairly considerable to back this up.

The same council that is considered corrupt by the residents?

Victim blaming. Never thought it would get to this.

Indeed. Even thinking about deflecting responsibility for this onto those residents will not work out well for anyone in the decision making process.

There will be minutes from meetings and discussions. We'll just have to wait.

Y'know what, 'collective view' or not, this isn't something you put to a popular vote. It's basic safety common sense. The position should have been "Fuck your opinions, you're having sprinklers". What a terrible excuse.

"We totally wanted to put sprinklers in to save them, but they just wouldn't let us"

I just can't stop thinking about this and everyone involved. It's shocking when you hear just how extremely quickly the stairwell was thick with smoke so most people just stayed in their flats as a result with no feasible way out. There was no chance. The final death toll will be unimaginable. And what a horrible, frightening way to go. And in the middle of the night.

And so avoidable, so unnecessary. I'm so upset and so angry about it all because it shouldn't have been like this. Not at all.

It's also great that people are donating everything from money to rooms, but in this country we really shouldn't need to. It's not a humanitarian crisis in a third world country. It's here in one of the largest economies of the world and the government should absolutely be funding every penny necessary to ensure those affected have absolutely everything they need.

The reports of victims calling/messaging their families/friends before they went are just too sad to read. That video on the BBC where they interview the video of the Syrian guy :( . It's fucking heart wrenching.

Even when he elaborates on his position, it definitely speaks hugely to the narrative that the building was severely neglected in many other ways.

“We are now talking retrospectively after the most enormous tragedy, but many residents felt that we needed to get on with the installation of new hot water systems, new boilers and that trying to retrofit more would delay the building and that sprinklers aren’t the answer.”

Heads are surely to roll over this. Paget-Brown's most likely, if only as a symbolic gesture of a council that fucked up on an unholy scale.

Fucking hell, of course sprinkler systems weren't going to be the top of residents agendas. As human beings it is sadly in our nature to always put convenience and niceties before our own safety. But that's why regulations are in place. You don't ask residents whether they would like a sprinkler system, you just fit the fucking sprinkler system.

Can you imagine if at your work offices they asked for a vote on whether you should have smoke alarms or not?
