OF THE PLANE

I am calling it now....
Pacquiao wins this fight in a late round TKO/ stoppage.

Not the biggest boxing fan as I feel that any time it goes to the judges/ cards there is some bullshit going on... but I called the Buster Douglas victory over Mike Tyson back in the day. My dad was upset that he did not listen to my reason why I thought Tyson would lose. Would have made a killing.

So yeah, I think there is a reason this fight has not already taken place and its Mayweather not Pacquiao. I have a feeling that Pacquiao will come out quiet and turn it on after the 3-4th round... and we have a stoppage in the late rounds.

HBO's At Last:

and HBO's The Legends Speak:

are the best ones I've seen.

Much appreciated.

KILLING A KING: MAYWEATHER VERSUS PACQUIAO
http://fightland.vice.com/blog/killing-a-king-mayweather-versus-pacquiao

A fantastic technical breakdown of the fight (with gifs!).

This is incredibly on point and a refreshingly rare look into the styles of these fighters, as opposed to your run-of-the-mill hype piece.

Anyone who even has a passing interest in engaging with Saturday's fight on an intellectual level (or simply more than just a superficial casual fight fan level) should read this.

It's honestly difficult to overestimate how great it is to read a piece like this in a sea of pointless puff pieces whose depth of analysis ultimately boil down to: "These guys are old;" "Mayweather has never lost;" "Pacquiao got knocked out two years ago."

He keeps repeating that he has two fights left in him. Definitely going to be a re-fight, whatever happens.
He has one more fight left on his Showtime contract, so him saying that only makes sense from the standpoint of capping off his career. Most assume though that if he finishes 49-0, he'll set up one last mega fight to get to 50.
Mayweather's biggest problem is fighters who fight like Pacquiao, and Pacquiao's the only one who won't tire out or fade, so the likelihood is if he sits back trying to counter-punch all night, Pacquiao takes round after round unless he gets caught with one punch, and Mayweather doesn't have that one punch in him. That's where my pick comes from, I don't think Mayweather has what he'll need to win this fight, against this fighter.

I'm not seeing where Manny is a guy that exploits Floyd's weaknesses. The thing with Floyd is that he has no proven weaknesses or holes in his game to expose -- and guys have tried everything. He's seen everything and downloaded them all usually within 4-5 rounds. The two guys that earned rematches were both easy wins the next time.

The one real advantage going for Manny is workrate. Outworking and overwhelming Floyd with activity is his key to victory, but that's much easier said than done when you're being punished with clean shots for such aggressiveness. Floyd hits just hard enough to sting and make fighters think, slowing them down. It's not always a matter of simply tiring out.

Anyone know if any chain places would be carrying this fight?

Hooters, Buffalo Wild wings, etc.

I'm on my own that night and would love to watch the fight, but not sure where I would go.

That avatar suggests you're not too good at bold predictions. :P

And yes, styles make fights. Manny's biggest problem has been a smart counter puncher in Marquez. Floyd is the best trap-setter and counter puncher of them all on top of being the best at mid-fight adjustments.

Two totally different counter punchers though.

Historically southpaws have troubled Floyd as well, and with that herky jerky style Pac has it's gonna take Floyd even longer to adjust than usual.

I'd give Mayweather the slightly better chance in winning but I won't be surprised if Manny pulls it.

I heard on a local radio station in my neck of the woods that Hooters is carrying the fight and charging around $50 per person for cover and a table reservation.

I was with everyone saying this fight will be predictable, 5 years too late etc etc...

But I'd be lying if I said this wasn't the most hyped I've been about a fight in years

Looks like Tyson went in on Mayweather. (did a search for Tyson in the thread, only got one hit)

choice quote:

Interviewer: Whaddya think about Floyd, talkin about "Greater than Ali."
Tyson: He's very delusional. If he was anywhere near that realm of great in Ali, he'd be able to take his kids to school by himself.
Interviewer: There you go
Tyson: He can't take his kid to school by himself, and he talkin 'bout he's great. Greatness is not guarding yourself from the people, greatness is being accepted by the people... He's a little scared man, he's a very small, scared man.
Interviewer: Thank you sir.

How the hell did you call that one? It couldn't have been the matchup. That fight was the result of Tyson's dwindling focus behind the scenes along with his life spiraling out of control.

I haven't seen Floyd's "greater than Ali clip" yet, but I assume he's just talking about in the ring. If so, there shouldn't be a problem with him saying that. A lot of great fighters believe they're the greatest no matter who came before them. No one said it more than Ali himself.

And Buster Douglas' mother died about 3 weeks before the scheduled bout, so all the stars lined up for him that night.

Plus, the punch that lead to Tyson getting KO would've put any heavyweight in history on the canvas. I'm surprised Tyson was still cognizant to grab his mouthpiece.

I followed boxing pretty heavily during that time. So there were a few reasons that I knew Buster Douglas was going to win.

1) Tyson got knocked out while sparing earlier that week or the week before while training. That had never happened to that point, and I figured that mentally it would do a number on him and his confidence.
2) Buster Douglas's mother died like a week before. He was fighting and training with this "I dont give a fuck attitude, and I will give it all I got" mentality. I thought that mentally getting up for that fight would be easier.
3) His sister (if I remember correctly) was also in ICU or something like that and they thought she may not make it.
4) a few other small things....

When I put it all together.... I knew that Douglas had nothing to lose. Tyson had everything to lose. Douglas would go in and fight for his mom, sister and his pride. Tyson would go in thinking... damn... I just caught! I am not invincible! At the time it made sense, and I tried my hardest to convince my dad.

With this fight... I feel the same way. I feel as if the stars are lining up Pac, and Mayweather has everything to lose.

(Future prediction... Mayweather will win the rematch setting up a 3rd fight, and that should put boxing on the map for a bit longer in hopes they can build momentum back). Don't be shocked if that goes to score cards with a Mayweather win.

If Mayweather was spending the weeks leading up to the fight eating and doing coke your comparison you might have something there, but by all accounts Floyd is always laser focused in his preparation for a fight.

I dunno what to do. I didn't want to watch it because I don't really think it's going to be a good fight. Now the hype is getting me and I don't have cable and don't want to go to a bar....1st world problems

Tokyo Douglas takes out alot of fighters that night, including some ATG's. He put on a brilliant performance.

That Gaf hype. Don't have any friends buying the fight?

Picking Buster Douglas was just a pure just gut feeling, a heart over brain type situation. Him having nothing to lose did help as he fought really strong, and it's probably what got him back up off his ass when Mike knocked him down. But ultimately, the fight had little to do with all that and more to do with Tyson being ripe for the picking. It's all well documented now, but going into the fight, I don't remember Mike banging Japanese girls, having a corner of clueless yes men, and getting knocked out in sparring being common knowledge publicly. This was before every bit of information traveled so quickly the way it does now.

Mayweather/Pacquiao is another situation entirely. Both guys are well known. Both guys are focused, and who's the better fighter is up for debate. We can call this fight on styles and abilities over gut feelings. There's no excuses to be made.

Both are clearly past their primes, I'd say with Floyd having less mileage. Still top fighters but also very near the end. As much as I'd like for this to be a Brawl in Montreal situation, it just isn't the case.

Honestly for as hyped as I am for this, it shoulda happened 5 years ago.

Definitely should've happened 5 years ago. But oh well, at least we're getting it before the point that no one cares.

It's also a good point that both guys have slowed down. Most people say it's just Manny, giving themselves a built-in excuse in case he loses, but Floyd isn't in his prime either. One positive to help make up for it is that with all the drama surrounding this fight, and with more at stake than ever, both are expected to be at their recent best.

When you have Floyd struggling with B tier fighters like Maidana, then you know he isn't the same.

I just hope people (more towards actual boxing fans) don't try to make this win more significant than it should be.

Floyd was not struggling, he was playing around with maidana. You can see in the rematch that he dominated so he was not lying about the first fight.

Maidana is tough, smothering, awkward, and fights ugly though. Very beatable but not easy to look good against.

lol what? He adjusted for the second fight. Was he also "playing around" with Judah for the first half of their fight? Was he also "playing around" the whole first fight with Castillo, where he lost but was gifted a decision?

Maidana specifically. I am not going to front though, i thought castillo beat floyd in the first fight, not even a draw for him.

That's back when he'd actually get penalized for shoving his elbow in opponent's throats...nowadays he gets away with it, along with holding the head down then punching on the break, etc.

Yes. What basis do you have for claiming that the judges and ref are in the bag for Mayweather, considering Bob Arum is one of the shadiest mother fuckers in the boxing world?

Heh, if you've seen past Money fights you'll know what i'm talking about. It's painfully obvious (not penalizing MW for using his elbows, breaking up the action when MW is getting roughened up with valid punches...).

You've already made up your mind. If May wins you are going to be complaining about the refs and judges no matter what. Why even watch the fight?

Because he's gonna lose, he's getting stopped in the 8th round... bet money on it.

Momma Pac told me so, her hexing powers have been upgraded, she's ready to go.

If anything, it's rigged in Pac's favor so they can have an even bigger rematch. IF Pacquiao can't win a fight that's been fixed for him, that would be embarking :3

Yup Castillo was robbed big time. I hope pacman is watching the hell out of that fight.
