Mercenaries:XBOX or PS2???

So I am looking to pick up Mercenaries in the next day or so and I was wondering what was different between the PS2 and XBOX versions???

Well, as I recall, the PS2 version for Mercenaries had horrible load times. But I think that may have been fixed for the final release.

Why even ask? You can probably count the number of multiplatform releases that are better on the PS2 than the Xbox on one hand. :)

The PS2 version has Han Solo (yes, from Star Wars fame) as an unlockable, exclusive character. The Xbox version has Indiana Jones as it's exclusive character.

Yep, LucasArts gives lots of Harrison Ford love. :)

the gamespy review specifically mentions that the xbox version runs smoother :)

and gaming-age forums has spoiler tags as a non exclusive feature! :)

Hahahaha.

The commercials are really annoying.

The game looks pretty good, like GTA and BF1942. I like both of those games, so I should like this.

This is what I found in the gamespy PS2 review of Mercenaries.

http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-2/mercenaries/578390p2.html

Graphically, Mercenaries is one of the best games to hit the PS2 in recent memory. Although most of the country is drab and gray, everything looks nice thanks to some impressive (yet not overwhelming) bloom effects. Everything runs at a solid 30 frames per second, so there's no slowdown, even during the most frenetic firefights (to be fair, it's not as smooth as the buttery Xbox version).

PS2 version scores 4.5/5 and Xbox version 5/5.

As for the unlockable characters:

I believe you can unlock Han Solo and Indiana Jones in both versions but each version takes a different method to unlock them.

It's amazing how just a few weeks ago this game was basically unknown and within the last few days it basically popped up on everyones radar. +1 for awesome commercials.

Just wish more and more companies gave their titles more press. Look at MGS 3. I rarely saw any commercials for it and people are missing out.

I've been hyping this and Brothers in Arms since E3. Both are going to be sleepers...

this is the first time a commercial has really sold me on a game.. I dont think I was going to run out and buy it until the reviews started coming in.

I don't know...I thought there was a pretty decent buzz about it after e3. I know I personally was singing it's virtues. The reason you haven't heard too much until lately is probably due to all the great titles that've come out in recent months.

Either way, I think I'm going to go try and rent this tonight...if it's available that is.

The commercials had a reverse effect on me, in that I went from not knowing much at all about the game to hating it.

I've read that the Xbox version runs at 60fps? Can that be true? Regardless, I'm getting it on that platform as it's better for shooters and is sure to be a little sharper. I'd certainly buy it if it was a PS2 exclusive, can't wait! One of the best graphical effects are falling buildings haha.

The demo seemed pretty smooth and I didn't remember much slowdown at all. I'm not good at gauging frame rates though so I'm not sure if it is 60.

I know this may be a strange compilation of games, but the demo reminds me of Dynasty Warriors mixed with GTA mixed with Armed and Dangerous.

What I mean is that the outdoor enviroments seem very expansive so in that way it reminds me of Dynasty Warriors. The ability to do practically anything on foot and use with different vehicles reminds me of GTA. The 3rd person on foot action reminded me of Armed and Dangerous as the game seemed to be paced the same way.

So Gamespy gave the Xbox version a higher score than the PS2 version even though the only difference is a higher framerate? Lame.

A half-point difference because it has a better framerate? What on earth is wrong with that? Did you play Red Dead Revolver on both? Makes quite a difference.

Gamespy also said that the animations were smoother on the Xbox version.

I think I might just have to cave and get this. ;P

on a side note I want to hump the producer Shara Miller

Haha, same here. But I'm selling the 'box soon, so there's no reason to buy it more software.

Yes there is if you plan on getting XB2 and it's backward compatible if not your right.

The Xbox has over the PS2:

* better load times
* higher res textures
* normal and specular maps
* better framerate
* 480p support

PS2 has 4 trigger buttons, so one may argue that the controls are slightly better. And the different unlockable character.

Indiana Jones on XB that is lame, Han better be in the game as well.

The Indiana Jones thing isn't a joke?!?!? Holy shit, that's great news.

eh, I don't get buying the inferior version, but people should buy what makes them comfortable, no need to argue. I actually prefer the Xbox controller for these types of games (I had the PS2 demo).

It's not ignorant when he acknowledges both the differences and his preferences. It's not like the differences are so massive that they're going to affect the enjoyment of any but the more anal retentive of players...

they cost the same amount of money why not give the your money to teh system with the superior version if you have both systems. He admits he is just buying the game on his ps2 cause he is a ps2 whore.

Thats like buying MSG2 substance frame rate problems and all for the xbox jsut cause you are an xbox whore.

For starters I didn't buy it, I just rented it for now. Secondly me being a PS2 whore has made me completely accustomed to the Dual Shock to the point that I completely suck when using any other system controllers. So I just stick to the PS2 mutlti platform games. Controls are more important to me than graphic upgrades.

Really it's not hurting anyone that I chose a multiplatform game on the PS2 over the Xbox version. Get the XBox version if you want it and enjoy it. For now i'm enjoying the PS2 version.

see thats valid... but in your other post you just made it sound like the only reason you got it on ps2 was because you you had your dick stuck in the ps2's USB port.

my mistake.

Will Spin For Sony

:lol do you guys PM each other?

It really doesn't matter if someone is more comfortable with another. If Indiana was in the PS2 version I might have pause. I'm a Jones whore.

So you're saying that calling SSX an "IGNORANT Fanboy" was fair, despite his full disclosure of preference and acknowledgment of the difference between the two versions?

Generally, you strike me as a smarter poster than the type to go for the, "laugh at their tag to to invalidate their post" strategy but I guess you've got nothing else to work with in this case, eh? :P

What the hell is it with you people and condeming folks for purchase the PS2 version of a multi-platform title? I mean goddamn yes the Xbox version USUALLY will look better... but if someone chooses to go with the PS2 version so the fuck what? How does that affect your enjoyment of your version of said title? Yet we see this same shit time and time again in various threads...

I for the record will probably pick up the Xbox version.

No one is condemning anyone. We're just wondering why anyone would consciously choose an inferior version. I can understand if you prefer one controller over another I guess but otherwise it's completely stupid and makes no sense.

I was making a joke, and I think all parties should lighten up about it. Who cares? Buy it on Phantom for all the personal difference it makes to me. Whoever gave you the tag brought special attention to the context, I was just chuckling at it. I no more think this topic deserves deep system war analysis than I desire to find something here to "work with". Everyone walk away and enjoy the game.
