Mercenary Kings |OT| It's Megaman/Metal Slug meets Borderlands (lol)

I wonder how many people would have taken to this in a much better way if they hadn't approached it expecting a Metal Slug clone.

I started playing it like an rpg, farmed materials and made a new gun and now it's starting to click. Very happy with this ps+ offering just as with don't starve

Really like the wooden sword TLOZ reference lol it says "it's dangerous to go alone, take this". Also the metal gear solid reference and I can't help but notice that "empress" looks like some sort of revy (black lagoon)+ Lara croft mix

BRAVO ZULU

An actual ingame group chat would be fantastic, since it makes coordinating your group a hell of a lot easier. When you can divide and conquer in gathering quests or keep track of each other and a boss, the game really starts coming into its own more. ...Again, much like Monster Hunter.

Are u guys telling me that no one thinks to use players met option and invite to a party chat?

Playing multiplayer is honestly where this game shines, really reminds me of Castlevania Harmony of Despair. Kind of mundane playing by yourself, but with a friend the game just opens up lots of fun.
Yeah, played today with a friend and it was much better. I imagine it will be even more fun with 3 or 4 players.

This game is beta! And confusing too...where is my ps+ driveclub?

And why the hell are there loadingtimes??? even The SNES didnt had loadingtimes for this kind of games.

I kind of think that had to do with cartridges. Chrono Trigger didn't have a 5 second delay when loading your inventory screen on the SNES, but it does on the PlayStation version for some reason. Not sure what's up with that.

Yeah, though I think the enemy difficulty scales some with the more people you add. Noticed when some randoms jumped in our game, enemies that used to die pretty quickly took more hits to kill. And you're sharing a life pool like in Monster Hunter, so it'd only take everyone die'n once for it to be a mission fail. Just better be some good people.

The game has now froze 8 times in a row on the snitch mission when engaging the steel soldier. Anyone else?

It's crashed on me there too, exactly where I engage the steel soldier. I just said "fuck it" because it was the second crash in an hour, so I haven't tried again since.

The more I play it, the more I like it. Playing it with my girlfriend. It's like a shitty escort mission except I can take the controller when she's taking too long.

"Babe just wait in the tent until I rescue these hostages."

She seems to enjoy it though.

I really wish I could bring my character data over to my friend's place and play couch co-op without having to start over. Having quite a bit of fun with this.
Can't you push your save data up to the cloud, and then pull it back down again at your buddy's place?

I decided to give this another shot and this time I fared better and completed a couple missions.
The problem is in the steel soldier mission, I find it, then shoot it a bit, then it goes away to appear on another area that I have to get to. Repeat indefinitely.
Is this by design? Won't it stay in the same location until killed? What makes it move to a different area? If this is done on purpose and not a weird bug or glitch, then I'm quitting this game for good.
Giantbomb did a quicklook and it was painful to watch.

Seems like the game's length is increased by doing stuff like this like playing the same level over+over again with different missions.

But I haven't given up yet. And what's the deal with most of the weapon upgrades showing worse stats?

Capture missions are generally my favorite as they can be done really fast, which gives you a lot of free time to explore the level for hidden materials.
The way it turned out in that video, it ends up being forced backtracking over and over again. They didn't seem all that impressed.

Boss fight? Fairly early on you should have enough material and cash to afford a gun and ammo that will get them blinking red so that you can capture them on the first time you encounter them. Caustic ammo is nasty stuff. :)

Honestly I am really confused about why the boss kept running... I just played that mission a second ago at the time of this post, and I managed to get him down to red health and capture him in the very same spot.

What about a previous mission where you see that enemy/boss for the first time? I just did that one and I also beat it on first appearance. That normal or does he keep running?
Maybe Brad wasn't aggressive enough.

The first time I fought him that was just killing him, he ran away once I believe...

It may have just been a bug or something causing the boss to keep running.

A few days ago I was involved in a boss fight where he just repeatedly decided to bitch out and flee to the other side of the map way sooner than most. It was a bit irritating, but since I was playing with a friend and with help from a Miss Zero teleport or two, we managed to divide and conquer eventually. I'm not sure how the game handles when a boss runs or doesn't, but at least for most of the early ones (steel soldiers, raid rovers, blitzhound) as long as you have a decent weapon and know when to go on the offensive, they can generally be taken down without much hassle.

Enemy HP scales with the number of players you have, and I imagine this is true for bosses too. I wonder if they just run more because if only a single player engages him out of a group of three or four, there just isn't much damage being done?

Yeah, if you're jumping into a game like this looking for a linear, new-environment-every-ten-minutes sort of game, then you'll come away feeling pretty underwhelmed. The enjoyment comes in gearing yourself up, trying out new weapon combinations and finding what does and doesn't work for you, and learning the boss patterns so that you can get from "oh god what is he doi--oh I died" to "kicked his ass in a minute and a half without taking any hits."

As for weapon upgrades "showing worse stats," that depends on just what sort of weapon you're trying to craft. Pay particular attention to the receiver type (handgun, machine gun, SMG, etc) because that tends to have a huge bearing on what other parts will or won't offer much benefit. In theory throwing a minigun clip onto a handgun sounds cool because hey, handgun with 100 shots before reloading, but doing so will also murder the strength of each individual shot. It's how the game balances itself and it encourages creating complete weapon-sets or at least thinking through gun construction, rather than being completely haphazard with it.

The game is not bad. My only problem is that the map moves around when I bring it up. Why is that? Is it my moving the controller? Can I turn that off?

You're probably lightly dragging your finger over the touchpad. No idea if you can disable it or not.

Wow this game is actually pretty fun at least for me. The only thing that pisses me off is that Damn reload mechanic.

I was able to get this mission to work. The game hitched horribly when I approached the Steel Soldier, but it didn't crash. He didn't run away either, which was lucky.

I also finally unlocked the "win a mission without getting hit" achievement, though I never actually saw the trophy trigger. I only got it after I clicked into MK's trophy list from the PS4 menu. Very strange.

Ah I did notice that now. I made a new gun using the Hand Cannon and it's a beast, doing 900+ damage. It's only got 2 rounds but I love it, got the final boss on recruit in a single encounter. Most enemies go down in one shot. Not for everybody, but I'm the type who also like semi-automatics and bolt actions in first person shooters.

This is like the 8th time I got this error.

Just deleted it, load times, stutters especially in this generation. I guess it makes sense since it's free but I won't tolerate this lol. To be honest I'd think I'd rather have SNK develop an HD Metal Slug than this studio I've never even heard of.

How do I know which knife I have equipped? I just forged a new one but I can't figure out if I'm using it or not.
Edit: ah I figured it out, had to tab over to 'owned'

I watched the Giant Bomb Quick Look, and it left a really bad impression about the boss chasing. So, it's taken the worst mechanics from Monster Hunter (Monsters fleeing, time limit, material grinding)? Had to read the comments to see there was quite a lot of stuff Brad was missing like the radio, leaving the designated boss area, playing with a crappy weapon.

Looks like better tutorials are needed, but I thought that was the point of Early Access to get feedback on that kind of stuff?

If I had more time in my life, I would try the game myself to fully appreciate the negativity. Maybe later when I'm done with a backlog.

For what it's worth, I did have a chance to play the PS4 version of the game myself for the first time...and I definitely started seeing what a lot of people in the thread here have been complaining about. The audio popping, long load times going to and from missions, and an interesting bug where my co-op partner somehow managed to roll his way through a wall and wind up in total oblivion. I finished the objective without him but it never triggered the mission-ending cinematic, which left us stuck in a quest-complete state without it actually ending (the timer stopped running, I couldn't take damage anymore, and couldn't use the transceiver to call Bobby). Really odd stuff, NONE of which is present in the PC steam release. I hope they get a fix together for it because I definitely see how those issues would turn a lot of people off, which is a shame because it's really not indicative of the properly finished product.

can someone explain to me how the rank system work???

I dont get it.

So I have 29 rank points, and next level up is at 30.

So I need one more rank point to level up.

I been doing new missions and old missions, single player and multiplayer and I have yet to get a single rank point.

I finish the levels and it says i got 3 or 2 ranks points, but yet, im still at rank 29……???

This doesn't make sense. at first I was getting rank points after every missions, but once i hit rank 29, which is ONE friggin point away from leveling up, its like the rank points I earned after that doesnt count or something.

I dont understand this.

Basically what it means is that in order to advance to the next rank, you need to clear that level's primary mission (aka the one on the end of the list, usually in big red letters). That'll break the limit on your advancement and get things moving again.

Wow, I JUST figured this out myself. and i was about to post what I found, but it looks like you beat me already. But ok, it makes sense now.

I'm loving this game. Great visuals, I'm enjoying the restrictive 16-bit era controls and there appears to be a lot of scope in the crafting/forging elements.

Great fun for a freebie.

I just got to the 2nd to last Rank (been playing since Early Alpha with some friends). The game has a pretty slow and kind of bumpy start but once you hit the 3rd (maybe it was the 4th?) rank it starts moving waaaaaaay faster and the gun parts are varied enough to really give you a crazy amount of variety in your weapons.

Also the bosses are hella wicked fun to fight.

The main problem (monster chasing) that most people seem to be hanged up on is something I really can't comment too much on. Or at least I didn't find this *suuuuper* frustrating. I did the early portions of the game with 4 people almost consistently and never really had issues with the whole chasing him around for hours. I mean myself personally, yah, I was moving around but I always had someone else to be on the boss' ass if he goes somewhere crazy far.

For what it's worth, this is something that pretty much goes away late game. The number of encounters/missions that even allow for bosses to skip around the map drops super hard and you do enough damage to where it never really becomes too much of a burden.

This game feels like it was pretty much designed to be played with at least one person and solo'ing can be a pretty... timid experience? At least early on I would say. Watching the quick look made me realize this definitely doesn't seem like the kind of game you play alone with the way the boss travels around the map.

I like this game a lot. But it is buggy as frack! So many hard crashes.

Shotguns are the way to ho with this game. Machine guns do not do fair well at all. Once I started using the shot gun with 900+ dmg I started easily completing missions much easier

After putting more time in to it, the people who are hyping this up as a new Metal Slug are doing it a disservice. I don't know if there is more to like about this game under the supposed Metal Slug comparisons, but I can tell you that it's not a fun action game.

For those complaining about the boss running, it's usually timed.

If you have the Computer mod installed, it'll tell you the location of the bosses on the map.

I'm currently Captain rank right now, and I've only had 2 bosses tops run on me. (I've played this on PC before, so I at least know what I'm doing)
