Nicotine sucks. I bought a vape and started using it a couple weeks ago, now my stress and anxiety levels are through the roof. Gonna have to muster up the willpower to stop using it before my addiction gets even deeper.
Were you smoking before? Why would you start vaping?

I started drinking again too. I basically went on a minor spree of self destruction.
I'm heading for a liver transplant situation if I don't stop. Really tough right now as I just want to have a drink to forget. Thing is I was thinking about whatever you do in life it doesn't matter since you'll die and there's nothing to be remembered, you'll be dead. I was thinking of medically assisted suicide if things get worse. Cancer treatments seem to be working but I'm just tired of life. I should be thankful for what I lived through and have, but it's just depressing to know you do all of this for nothing in the end.

I'm sorry to hear you're in that situation man. I know the liver giving up takes a lot of people. Learning about that is one of the things that got me to stop last time. It sounds like you aren't there yet. It is depressing as fuck, I got nothin else for ya there. That's the life we are given.

I'm not someone to do big handy work. I'll hire someone.

But during the summer when it's time to mow the lawn and wash the car (inside and out), it makes sense to never do it in the afternoon at peak heat. But some reason that's when I do it even though its roasting. I'm a neat freak too, so sometimes I'd combo it with getting out my leaf blower and blowing all the grass, dirt and small pebbles that build up on the driveway. When I do this shit, I do it all at once over an afternoon.

Love it.

Growing up, I always thought it looked retarded when you'd see old guys hanging out in the garage with friends. They are drinking, often old Italian or Greek looking guys. Why the hell would you do that in the heat?

Way back when I moved into a house (from a condo), I did these sweaty jobs all at once.

First thing I did was grab a stool, sit in the garage like those old dudes with a cold drink, turned on a small boombox and sat there just like them chilling. Now I understand.
Normally I would hire too but all the workers and business are booked through the year. It's the main reason we will have to wait until next year to re-do the siding and replace the windows. It sucks. I tried talking the wife out of putting in the greenhouse this year due to the storm damage but she would not relent.

I grew up in a small town, so even as teenagers we would just hang around in the garage or backyard or whatever. It's always made sense to me. My buddy and I would even play NHL '97 out in the unheated garage during winter. Beer keeps you warm.

Now here's a hot tip for all you cool cats and kittens, hang out in the water at approximately waist deep while you drink your beer. This is the exact perfect submersion to enjoy a cool beverage on a hot summer afternoon.

There's no way I do any of my own home repairs, carpentry work, etc. I went to school for computer science, most of my training and certs are in IT, that's my realm. I'll pay actual skilled professionals so I know things are done right. IMO carpenters, plumbers, and electricians earn far less than they should on average. The world wouldn't exactly fall apart if everyone like me disappeared tomorrow. Can't say the same thing about carpenters, plumbers, and electricians. Entire industries would buckle without them.

My friend's daughter died last night. She's had lung cancer for two years now. She started having treatment for it and, for a while, it seemed to be working. But six months ago, it hit back with force. She was taken into hospital two nights ago after collapsing and slipping into some sort of coma. The doctors said that due to the progressive nature of the cancer, there was a very slim chance of her recovering. At 2:33am this morning, they switched off her life support. She was 12. I've known her parents for about fifteen years, and I've known her since birth. She was like a daughter to me. RIP, Demi-Leigh.

Tell me there's a God without telling me there's a God.

Well I’m sitting on the side of a bike path with a flat and didn’t pack a CO2 cart so I’m SOL until my wife rides back to the truck and picks me up.

How did y’all plan to fail this Monday?

Shame. Kidding. I can't remember the last time I rode with any sort of preparedness. It's a miracle if I just get on the damn bike.

What’s dumb is I have everything but an inflation device…I used to have a small pump I could clip to either my road or mountain bike but it got lost in the move…uhh 4+ years ago

No I quit all cigs and vaping a around 2017. Decided to buy a vape out of the blue. I had been thinking about it for a while and then just went for it. Lot of stress the last few months. I knew it would make it worse.
Nicotine is such a cunt of drug. I'm pretty sure I started drinking because cigarettes weren't enough anymore. And I lost control of my weed smoking habit because of the nicotine.

Allen Carr's book helped me a lot to understand addiction and especially nicotine addiction.

Nicotine is that hot crazy chick you fucked on the reg before you realized that she was needy as fuck; Toxic, high maintenance and only made you see God when you were really stressed because she knew she'd be able to get away with playing dead fish every other time you felt you needed some.

Mary Jane is the Girl Next Door that loves to make you feel good.

The problem is that they play really well together.

I've done cigs and weed a few times with friends while drinking, hanging out and what not but I've never felt the urge go again or just randomly incorporate them to my daily life. I guess I'm lucky in that sense. I do enjoy beers tho.

Gambling tho, fuck me. Keep me away from that shit or I'll go bankrupt in no time.

Do you know what grinds my gears? Mother fuckers who can't flush a toilet at work. I can't tell you how many times I go to use the restroom here and there's a frothy piss chilling in the toilet. Not too many toilet snakes thank christ but piss. Piss everywhere. How hard is it to flush?

I was at a coworkers house having drinks over a decade ago. He & his gf had a policy, 'if it's yellow, let it mellow; if it's brown, flush it down'. I do not understand the rationale either. I refused to comply.

I recommend you look into home repairs with just videos on YouTube. We repaired home-related problems by spending an afternoon going from zero knowledge to enough knowledge to fix it just by simple Internet searching and the will to resolve it. It saves us hundreds, if not thousands, at times. It can be something stupid simple but a contractor will always act like it was a big deal to justify the price of labor.

Now we're building a gazebo for the backyard and it's not that hard once you have the logic thought out. The price of material was around ~$1,000 and it's probably going to be a total of 20 hours to complete. This was a ~$4,000 job for carpenter work and that was without the shipping cost for parts. With the raise in price for everything right now, we've learned a lot, and realized how much we can save with just a little elbow grease and more importantly, the will to do it.

I'm not saying that electricians, plumbers, or carpenters aren't needed at times but I would argue that for 80% of their work, they are well aware that the customer could do it themselves if they dedicated an hour or two into looking into research. It's not the 90's anymore. The Internet has gotten advance and efficient with great visual aid for even a novice to adopt a skill, at least enough to solve basic issues.

It also makes you helpful to your family and friends. For nearly anything we learn, someone we know eventually runs into the same issue and we give them our advice and it can save them a good bit of money like it did for us.

It all depends. My job leaves me with only so much time to get home repairs done. When my A/C crapped out a year or two ago, I could have researched and tried to fix the problem. Or I could have called a specialist. I opted for a specialist because the time, energy, and resources dedicated are too much to make it worth my time. A few years back, I had a leaky sink. I did fix that one myself by doing the research and trying different solutions until one stuck.

If the 'repair' is also on something that takes craftsmen-level skill to achieve good visual results, I am opting in on a pro every time.

Also, because this was a good rabbit hole to fall down when I was high:

I understand the job aspect. It's mainly weekend work and honestly, if my husband wasn't encouraging me, I'll probably call in everything too. I used to be the type to text someone to come hook up a DVD player. We had an AC problem too. It turns out something (forgot what it was called. It was like a battery I think?) expanded in the heat and it had to be replaced and it was a $40 part.

I'm not condemning anyone for calling home-repair in. I just want to set a reminder to keep it in people's head in case money gets tight because I've seen people break down when things break. Society, especially millennials (for the record, I am one), have gotten too dependent on services. It's important we step back and remind ourselves how much we're able to do on our own whenever possible.

Makes sense. When my house was hit in that storm months ago I felt helpless as all the skilled labor was already tied up on jobs from before the storm. We finally found someone to repair the roof but could only get put on lists for the rest of the exterior work.

Also why my body is still sore today--we had to do our own greenhouse install. We're still in process but have a good portion of the ground work done prior to the foundation, including geothermal climate control tubing.

Both of these really made me reflect on how much of a skill and talent is needed to be able to do this work day-in and day-out. It's been a long time since I've had that level of real, honest work. I miss it and I do think I want to take a more hands-on approach to home repairs myself. But I also know that I'm a little bitch so we'll see which side prevails here.

Capacitor.
Yep. Stores energy to get fans and such running from a stop when there’s no inertia to help. I’ve had to replace mine to keep my AC going and my internal blower motor entirely. Probably gonna need a whole new central air and furnace in a few years here…

I just want to thank you each and everyone of you who took the time to message me your support the other day. It genuinely brought a tear to my eyes knowing there are some honesty, compassionate people still out there in this world. Nothing will ease the pain of my loss, but it's encouraging to know there is support out there should I need it. Thank you one and all. Big love.
