I recommend you look into home repairs with just videos on YouTube. We repaired home-related problems by spending an afternoon going from zero knowledge to enough knowledge to fix it just by simple Internet searching and the will to resolve it. It saves us hundreds, if not thousands, at times. It can be something stupid simple but a contractor will always act like it was a big deal to justify the price of labor.
Now we're building a gazebo for the backyard and it's not that hard once you have the logic thought out. The price of material was around ~$1,000 and it's probably going to be a total of 20 hours to complete. This was a ~$4,000 job for carpenter work and that was without the shipping cost for parts. With the raise in price for everything right now, we've learned a lot, and realized how much we can save with just a little elbow grease and more importantly, the will to do it.
I'm not saying that electricians, plumbers, or carpenters aren't needed at times but I would argue that for 80% of their work, they are well aware that the customer could do it themselves if they dedicated an hour or two into looking into research. It's not the 90's anymore. The Internet has gotten advance and efficient with great visual aid for even a novice to adopt a skill, at least enough to solve basic issues.
