I can almost understand the fans who aren't digging the game - it's widely different than last entries, the plotting is a bit slow up front, and the "open world" is riddled with bottlenecks and zero shortcuts...but I don't find those as faults. It's integral to the design.

[snip]
I can't praise it enough - the writing is so intelligent and the slapstick humour is a welcomed touch.

On top of that, I think it's home to one of the more profound commentaries of war. From the prisoner who lost his entire family in a bombing, to the humanitarian missions, to the very scary and very real depiction of war crimes. You want Snake to succeed.

I think what's throwing people off is that the tutorial literally lasts half of the game; which I'm okay with, because it really takes a sense of responsibility from a developer to teach the player all the ins and out of this massive game. I was overwhelmed by Skyrim, and GTAV, but I feel a sense of accomplishment in this title, and perhaps it's because of the way that you deal with a lot of revenue which allows the player to freely spend on things they want and need.

It's perfect.

The only real beef I have with the game is that I think it should let you browse tips really easily. New players are going to encounter so many awkward roadblocks, simply because the game hasn't shown them an arbitrary tip yet. These things can make aspects of playing the game, managing the open world and mother base, so much better.

On the whole, though, I think I agree with you. I think it's an unprecedented game. It's easy to forget when you're not playing it, and it's easy to forget in light of previous MGS games which were so different, but as a thing on its own... Holy fuck.

The second part of Chapter 18 is some bullshit.

Yeah it's bad.

My only major criticism of MGSV is that it has some weirdly placed difficulty spikes, some of which occur mid mission. I think the gameplay of the whole game is phenomenal, but there are a couple of missions which I feel throw all that good work out of the window and throw cheap encounters at you that undermine the rest of the game. Mission 18 is a big culprit of that.

I'd honestly just like to know how to get a suppressor for the UN-ARC-NL rubber bullet primary rifle.

I'd be really bummed if it was just impossible to put one on there because even with weapon customization the suppressor slot is Xed out.
You can, you have to research different versions of guns in the research tab.
Edit: Say you've researched the UN-ARC-NL, there should be a UN-ARC-S or R and these include different customisation a like a new flashlight, suppressor, barrel, muzzle, mag etc. researching these will give you ability to mix and match parts between guns.

I didn't even know you could make it to the tanks before they start to move. I sneaked into the village and found some documents that marked the tanks and the colonel on the map, and when I did they were already en route to the base. I ended up finishing the mission by ambushing them with missiles after they passed by me, destroying one because it stopped to try to fight me, and then chased after the other through a sandstorm. Still managed to take them out before they reached the base, but I wasn't able to take out the colonel non-lethally because he got caught up in all the explosions

Oh yeah, I kind of forgot about taking that guy non-lethally. When I found the missile truck I just blasted everything and ran away. I'll need to do these again soon

Are side ops timed in any way? Say I have 10 side ops in my list, if I progress the main story will they disappear?

Nope. At least none I've seen have been.

Feel free to take them at your own leisure. I've got some incomplete ones that I've had available since the first few hours.

Mission 11
i have no idea how your guys beat quiet with a tranq pistol. I had trouble getting her with a Sniper because she'd take off once I got close enough to even see her. Ya'll are crazy.

Well, it would have just taken me longer, but I could have
beaten her with the exact same strategy with the tranq
.
I had developed the
UN-ARC-NL prior to the fight so I used that.
I basically ran around
exposed until I got a marker giving me her general position. Then I got to cover and marked her. From there I pipped her with the UN-ARC-NL from afar if she was in an inaccessible area or if she was in a place I could get the drop on her I snuck around, got close, then unloaded the clip. Took like 30 minutes.

Huh? Humans can live off drinking rain water, they can't live off salt walter. This isn't something specific to the character.

it's actually to do with Quiet and how she drinks, but yeah certain level of confusion there from suspecting rain water to be high in salt, at least far at sea like MB.

Ahh okay I figured with weapon customization it would just let me add the suppressor onto it since I had the suppressor for the lethal variant.
Do you know at which point the suppressed version of the UN-ARC-NL appears on the tech tree?

Didn't see your edit, and I only see one follow up to the UN-ARC-NL and it's the one with the red dot, I guess after I research that one the silenced one should pop up?

I would have said no but I swear I lost one the other day.

20-hour-in side op spoiler: I lost the Legendary Gunsmith mission. I swear it was on my list, and now it's not. Maybe my Intel Team levelled down?

Got me an S rank tho so I'm not complaining. Yeah, I plan on replaying this mission and trying a bunch of ways. If I can find out if replaying on lethal wont fuck up my storyline I wanna a do it proper sniper vs sniper.

You can replay it and kill her and it won't mess up your story. In fact, you can kill her the first time, replay the mission and have her come to MB.

It's the mission with the truck and the skulls ? Because I'm stuck here :/
Can't find a way to extract the truck without being killed by the skulls.

you gotta kill them all. it's pretty hard.

I did it with a rocket launcher and grenade launcher.

Ah, ok thanks, I'm currently at 53 hours and don't wanna miss anything.

Sadly I don't, I forget all about research and then go back to it every few hours. It'll appear eventually though, try going back to weapon customisation after you've researched different versions of the assault rifle.

I honestly think this is one of the best games of all time. It maximizes the usage of every button on the controller, giving you so many context sensitive abilities. You won't find QTEs here - you are in total control. The animations are lush, the sound design is amazing, and the cutscenes are very well directed - notice how they're all composed with a single take - the camera alone is unwaivering, unblinking, and directed with purpose. The attention to detail is quite a sight to behold - from the authentic depictions of its setting, to the smoke and mirrors they pull off for these graphics. The actual gameplay is perhaps the highlight - there are ways to make a level easier - or harder - you have everything at your disposal making you feel like a one man army - you are free to replenish your supplies whenever you want, you can call in airstrikes, and you can use the environment to your advantage. You're never tied down to a singular conclusion; It's a true sandbox experience.

And I've brought it up before, but the UI is truly special. It's sci-fi, it's sexy, it's intuitive, easy to read, and has all the options you want to enter the lore (which is always cleverly tied with real world events), build your character, or keeping progress.

I can't praise it enough - the writing is so intelligent and the slapstick humour is a welcomed touch.

some of the game's flaws are starting to rear their head having spent 20+ hours: fast travel problems/mission intro cutscenes add a lot of wasted time, some of the story missions being slightly fancier side ops, overly silent big boss, etc. that said, i think the above mostly hits the spot by virtue of the fact there's no other game quite like it. (psuedo) open world stealth action with this level of gameplay dexterity simply doesn't exist and will unlikely be replicated or improved upon anytime soon.

Was doing a side op just now where I had to extract a skilled soldier. While exploring the outpost they were in, a sandstorm comes through and I was spotted after bumping into someone. Everything quickly turns to shit and the skilled soldier (who happens to be a sniper) starts shooting at me. Quiet quickly starts killing the other soldiers while I make my way over to the skilled soldier. I eventually get to the skilled soldier and I go to tranq him. Just as I pull the trigger on the tranq gun, Quiet fucking shoots the soldier in the head and kills him causing me to fail the side op.

Thanks, Quiet.

Is there an reason to keep troublemakers around, or just boot em?

I got rid of the ones that cause injury because I was fed up of them CONSTANTLY sending people to my sick bay. Funny enough, the ones that cause PTSD or Sickness have been perfectly fine.

What does "V have come to." even mean? Is it explained in the game? Or does it just mean that we have come to an end?

My interpretation is that 'has come to' is in the sense that V (Venom Snake?) has come to from his coma.Who knows, may be explained in the game, but that's my take.

To be honest, any Metal Gear is unique when you try to find other games like it.
I'm super enjoying the game but reading these last comments is like way too much for me.

Quick question about the number of missions. I've heard it's about
36ish
. Is that number the number of episodes? I just did the first set of 3 missions after you get to the Mother Base initially, and those have been called episodes yet people here are talking about Chapters. I'm just curious which the count refers to.

Prologue spoilers:
Nurse calls someone and says it when you wake up at the beginning. V refers to Venom Snake which is what you're called in this game: Punished "Venom" Snake.

It's the last one in the NL tree and needs like level 36 R&D. For reference I'm on mission 14 and have done every side op that's popped up, but still have two tiers to unlock it. It's going to be a while. You get a ton of non-lethal stuff in other trees that are effectively silent earlier though. The sleep grenades and mines are awesome.

This exact same thing has happened to me a couple times. Makes me wonder where Quiet's true loyalties lie...

Can anyone tell me where I can find the specialists I need to craft Fultons that can extract vehicles? Missions 8 and 9 gave me PTSD flashbacks to those hours I spent hating my life playing the Peace Walker vehicle missions. Tanks only take five rockets in this game compared to like 50 in PW, but if you're facing more than one you still have to call in a Supply Drop, and those take way longer in this game than in PW.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
you don't need to, extract the truck and leave

I found it basically impossible to do this without killing them since they target and destroy it.

Being able to fulton vehicles now would make it much easier, but I was a decent chunk off from having that unlocked at the time.

You hear it
in the beginning,
man.

It's just like what people say IRL.

"He came to this morning."

"He has woken up. He has come to."

It's said verbally more often than it's written down. I've got a vibe it's bad translation/localisation.

Ending spoilers
V has come to, can't mean venom since he's not venom snake yet. may be referring to the 5th snake.

I was reading an article about this game, is it true the ONLY female character in this game is the scantily clad and doesn't talk much sniper, Quiet?

Really? No generic female soldiers? No female medic of some sort?

I mean I knew Kojima was somewhat sexist but that's pretty bad if true.
