Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain |OT2| A Franchise Robbed Of Its Future

Skel1ingt0n

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Wow! I just played the first Africa mission... now THAT’S what I’m talking about. See, that was well designed. Slow, linear progression up a path, but with multiple ways to tackle. Forced to play at night, with exciting shift changes just the same. You defeat the first outpost, and then you can steal a jeep ... drive it to another outpost, take that one out, drive some more - then you get a massive sandbox -
the oil facility
- to tackle. There’s clearly multiple ways to go about it, and there are two objectives on either side. I make it about half way through - so far, the entire mission - completely undetected. Suddenly though, someone spots me when I’m just a sprint away from the locked door. I take him out with my silencer, and then another is alerted which I throw D-Dog on while I choke hold someone coming around the corner. I go back to D-dog, and take that guy out. I run up the stairs... I’m spotted. OH SHIT! Grab my assault rifle and just go to town. Sneak in,
destroy the oil filter
.... and what’s this? There
are bodies?
Alllllllllright, time for some MGS craziness. Yes! I then, with rifle in hand, take out a bunch of others, use d-dog, and then lose em. I sneak into the other location, plant some C4, and stealthily sneak out of the base while on full alert - taking down 4-5 guys without giving away my location. Run out. Blow up facility. Call in a chopper, and it’s a straight 300m dash away. Escort arrives at LZ right on time. I hop in. Mission Complete. Now THAT’S what I’ve wanted from all the missions.

Lol I've played way too much Splatoon, I keep trying to hit the Booyah! button whenever Quiet saves me

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I guess that Miyamoto 4chan post about Zelda is applicable here. "You say too much cutscene, you want gameplay! Then I give all gameplay and stop dumb story cutscene business! THEN YOU SAY YOU WANT DUMB STORY CUTSCENE!"

I'm approaching a mission that needs this but I don't have it yet.. kinda putting me off hopping in.

Mission 10 - rescue the prisoners in the first area. One of them is a transport specialist you need. I believe you don't have to finish the rest of the mission, and can return to the acc, as long as the box is checked for the "rescue additional prisoners" objective.

I just thought of something, is it possible to change Buddy loadouts mid-mission? Like if I start off Quiet with the tranq rifle but want to switch to a lethal one mid-mission can I do that, like through a supply drop?

Just did a mission where I had to extract 2 dudes that couldn't be fultoned. Since carrying them over to the chopper would be a drag, I carried them both to a jeep, and fultoned the jeep.

... one of them fell.

Was getting caught part of your plan?

Yup, its on your idroid

Yes, should just be under the Buddy menu in the iDroid. IIRC it's an instant switch, no supply drop necessary.

Yup. It's in (or around) the iDroid's buddy menu.

To be honest, if the story finished at the end of Chapter 1, I'd be perfectly content. The final couple of missions and the cut-scenes surrounding them were as good as anything in the franchise. Absolutely kick-ass stuff.

How anyone could call it unsatisfying is a lost cause in my book.

As far as I'm concerned, the rest of the story is just gravy. Hell, just looked at my play-time and its 2 mins shy of 90 hours at this point :D

It's the same ridiculous thing as snake climbing a ladder for ten minutes with over the top music playing in the background in MGS3. Both are giggle inducingly stupid.

No, my point is that it's the exact opposite. The ladder scene was intentional. It is executed perfectly, but is silly. I love it. The
truck ride scene
is not executed properly because of animation and camera issues that utterly detract from what it's supposed to be portraying. It falls completely flat for technical reasons. I was laughing AT it, and how poorly it was done, rather than laughing WITH it, at the outrageous and silly nature of what was happening.

it's a regular upgrade

just check the requirements under development
That's the thing, I can't see it in upgrades.
You need someone with the transporation specialist ability. One of the prisoners in Mission 10 has it and a random soldier I think in the first village in the first mission in Africa also has it. After that you just need your R&D at the proper level
Hmm, I'll just fulton everyone out of that village, then. Thanks.

I picked this up yesterday, and have gone in blind - I've not seen any videos, read any articles and this is my first time in the OT.

I'm loving it - only done the first few missions, and now have 'Kids in America' song stuck in my head.

Has anyone advanced far enough in the online FOB portion (end game spoilers)
to build or dismantle nukes?
I see the place to research them but have read that they introduce some new, potentially negative, mechanics to the FOB invasions. Has anyone developed one?

Holy shit. So I finally got to the point where I can built a FOB and was thought it was easily ignorable until I found out they are the only way to further expand your base and increase the staff capacity.

#FucKonami seriously, I'm pretty pissed off right now.
I don't want to lose a day's progress, so this is what I'm doing - as long as you don't do the tutorial to invade your own FOB, it looks like you can't get invaded yourself. So just stay offline... the only thing that sucks is that you can't get the daily bonuses anymore, unless someone figures out a way to do that.

Mission Complete. Now THAT’S what I’ve wanted from all the missions.
I just did this one too. Great mission. Same time though I feel like that is what most of the main missions have given me. There were some great area designs in Afghanistan.
The oil facility
was particularly great though.

My understanding is that it limits the people who can invade you to people with high heroism. Which could be bad, because then you are dealing with the most hard core players. Also I guess you lose everything if someone decides to nuke you, which can only happen if you have your own nuke?

Just finished it.
Ending was a little predictable.
It is a fun game overall, but I think it is the weakest of the 5 main MGS titles.
There isn't really enough story or meat to it. Too much filler content. I'm not really sure the game benefits from open world design.
Navigating Mother Base is a pain.
Developing the base and weapons/items takes way too long.
There are some really strong moments, but they are few and far between.
Miller's voice actor does a great job.

Post mission 41 spoilers.

Not getting new story mission, just replaying older on higher difficulty (40 & 42) boss bathles not thrilled about tacking them on extreme.

I get more story missions after doing some side ops right?

So yeah can you guys take the nonstop ending bitching to the spoiler thread or something? Christ.

Anyways since I didn't get an answer in the last thread before it closed:
Two questions about the security team:

1. Some of my developed gear says it's usable by them. Do I need to equip it somehow? I don't see any options to but this game's UI is pretty useless so as far as I know it could require me to put in the damn Konami Code at the staff management screen.

2. I guess a semi-spoiler if you don't have the security team yet:
Do more of those offline 'invasions' ever happen? Is there any point to the security team outside of research requirements, if I don't plan to ever go online? All the online has done for me so far is kill my loadtimes and I'm not interested in base invasions.

I totally agree. I just finished this mission myself and had a lot of fun making my way through the area. I managed to sneak through without any alerts and escaped just as I watched support come right in and walk past me. Went at it really slow, it took a whole in game day to do. The game's been a slow burn as far as story goes, but I sure as hell am enjoying the ride.

Yes, you don't have to play any of the harder versions of missions to unlock more story stuff. If you don't have any yellow missions or side ops, just go do a few regular side ops, then return to mother base.

Just finished episode 31, and I'm torn on this game. On one hand it has the best gameplay in the series. I love it. On the other hand, the story is pretty shit. Needs more weird Kojima shit. Oh well, onward.

edit: Well best gameplay aside from bosses. Those have been shit.

What exactly do I miss out on if I don't want to touch the FOB stuff at all, like not even set up the one I get for free?

Oh nice, I'll do that if you don't have to do the rest of the mission

This is turning into the most repetitive game I have ever played. I think I've hit this same command post so many times that you'd think the enemy would wise up

You won't be able to claim the daily bonuses anymore, because you are forced to make one the moment you go online.

Functionally speaking, they immediately add 45 slots to each department.

An option to spawn directly on the ground at a selected landing point would make the game infinitely better for me. The loading screen at the start of a mission + the time it takes for the helicopter to arrive at the LZ to let Snake off is longer than the longest load screens in Bloodborne 1.0 for cryin out loud.

Your playtime is like double mine at the same point, so maybe you've seen important side details, but what is the story even at that point? For me it seems like it's "Kaz wants revenge and gets it". The start of chapter 2 is instantly taking that to a more interesting place (I've only seen the intro; I'm in the ACC now). And there's a lot of stuff that hasn't been explored. Eli seems mostly meaningless at this point. Unless you know what his role in chapter 31 with the levitating person is and I don't.

Can't you just log in to claim the bonus and then disconnect? I already made my FOB and got the extra slots and then disconnected. Still kept my extra 45 slots. No invasion, no hassle.

Question about Kojima in GZ and TPP:

I had transferred my save and have had Kojima in my Motherbase for some time. I just saved another Kojima for the Intel Agent Extraction Side-Op. Should I have two Kojimas? I can only find one at Motherbase.

I agree with this. Chapter 1s story was good enough. There are a couple disappointing aspects but overall I thought it was quite good and better than most story driven games.

After just finishing Chapter 1 today (49 hours >.<) I'm having a hard time deciding between this or Bloodborne as my GoTY/GoTG. This year has been a great year of gaming.

Holy shit, mission 30 is kicking my ass, I feel like it'd go a lot smoother if I gave up the idea of stealth and non-lethal takedowns

additional staff member slots, i'd suggest just setting one up queuing up upgrades and then disconnecting, that's what i did.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Since the OT changed...

Well, I'm trying to get it to the highest level to develop the F.O.B. device that requires it before I throw my good soldiers back in the Combat unit. Spoilers for those that don't want to know:
Highest item develop for Security Team requires level 30, yeah? Nothing higher?

.

Someone know the answer to my (not really a plot but game-related) spoiler question?

Is there any story stuff with Quiet that you can miss if you don't take her on missions? I've been using her for a while but I'd like to switch back to DD.
