Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Nintendo Direct

It didn't hold up.
MP1 was a chore to play again after so many years.
The backtracking alone wasn't something that belongs in a game this generation.
Especially with no fast travel.
It was acceptable in 2002.
Right.

As you've said, you're applying a 2024 lens to a 22 year old game. Not sure how much it matters. Prime 4 will of course not be like this, given it's a modern title made by people who make modern games. But as far as the known/ acceptable level of tediousness that comes with the genre of a Metroidvania-type game, it couldn't be completely eliminated.

Also, to bolded. Like, go back and play Metroid Prime 1 on a GameCube. Don't know what else to tell you. Join us in reality or don't, it's entirely up to you.

No it's reading that is the issue. It sold over a million in 3 weeks. Because of the end of the fiscal year. You said 3 mil, I said 1. And it hasn't been tracked since so it's certainly higher than that by now. As it's been nearly a year and a half, and it was only $40.

And using the Wii as a comparison is not a good way to project sales for a new entry. The system petered out after 2009 and was really only a crazy seller for its first three years, as a primarily casual machine. Switch is primarily a core gamer machine and achieved 130+ million on the backs of games like Zelda, Luigi's Mansion, Smash and 3D Mario. Metroid Prime 4 will absolutely blow previous entry sales out of the water.

But no need to argue about a hypothetical. We'll see how the next Switch generation goes. I wouldn't even have responded to this but you were reading my post wrong and incorrectly attributed a sales figure to me that I didn't say.
So you agree with me, it did not sell well at all.

And let's not talk about performance. Those resistance games ran like crap at barely 30 fps. Metroid Prime titles will ALWAYS run at locked 60. No small feature, my boys.
Well hold on your horses there. It wasn't locked 60fps at all, that's rose tinted glasses nostalgia talking. But it was a solid 60fps. Most importantly the gameplay / controls / artstyle were excellent, which is why they are still iterating on the same product years after. I mean, who would start with a resistance games template in 2024? Those games play like trash nowadays with abyssmal framerate and ugly artstyle (which was already ugly back then).

No. You're just really bad at reading/ admitting your error.

It's really not hard. But you do you
O.k I will admit I misread your post, but that still does not alter the fact this franchise is not a greast seller, and even though the remaster sold a million in reasonable time, it flatlined soon after. Not sure why you are defending the series sales so much, the games are great, even though they do not sell all that well.

I do hope the latest installment fares better, and if it's released on the Switch and Switch 2, then it has every chance, I am just not expecting it to blow our socks off, not that any of this matters either way.

This hot purple seems to cheapen the look.
i think its charming, like they were looking at CORRUPTION logo all day and thought how they needed to surpass it, someone said "how about using bright purple letters and call it Beyond?"

its showy cheap sci fi, fitting for Metroid

Visually looks nice considering the aging hardware but I never clicked with the Prime series and my recent play of the remake only affirmed that.

I actually finished Prime for this first time this year. I must have started it a half dozen times over the years and never made it more than an hour or two before bouncing off of it. I think it holds up remarkably well from a visual standpoint and while I admire that they translated the series into 3D, I find most aspects of the game play tedious. It killed any hype I had for HD versions of the sequels or MP4. I'll always have a special place in my heart for Super Metroid, Zero Mission and AM2R

That might be wishful thinking on my part but parts of what we've seen of the jungle environment makes me think the speedbooster and shinespark might be back. I'm talking about the large bridge on the left and the hollow tree in the foreground: seems like it'd be good places for Samus to use a shinespark to grab a hidden item on the inside of the trunk or even maybe reach the top of the giant tree in the background.

It because its not really a tradional shooter. The previous games allow you to lock on to enemies, which most FPS don't let you do, and you don't really get different weapon types either.

The emphasis is more on exploration and puzzle solving, though the combat is still fun.

If you play other Nintendo games, a good comparison to think about is how the combat in a 3D Zelda trailer doesn't look anything like the combat in a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta game.
That's fair they are sticking to their more traditional feel. I just think people should expect more from Nintendo. If this was coming from anybody else other than Nintendo it would be a bloodbath.

They have nothing in common with games like Doom or Halo, with the exception of being first person. Metroid Prime games are platformers and exploration games. Enemies are obstacles to navigate around or quickly dispose off before you resume your exploration. Aiming is non existent, you are meant to lock on the enemy, and the target area to put your lock is extremely large. Bosses are puzzle based, like Zelda games, where you have to find the right sequence and repeat it. Skill is not essential at all.
People reference doom and halo to show how kinetic the combat could be. Wouldn't you like improved combat along with the puzzle influence from past games?. People aren't asking them to strip the game down to a basic shooter but merely asking for more game design that doesn't call back to 20 years ago.

*They could even utilise the gyro on the switch for people while also having the option for lock on.

Prime 3 had a greater focus on combat and aiming, which I enjoyed, and it utilized a similar system where you could lock on with the camera but aim with the cursor. I certainly wouldn't be against it.

At the same time, I don't know that you can call that kind of design old or inherently outdated when Halo's combat has the same origin and hasn't changed much. Modern Doom's not all that much newer, and in fact they are intentionally reverting to a combat style that is more similar to the original games--a little slower, larger arenas, less vertical.

Maybe if that were on PS5 or Xbox Series. This game is pushing the Switch to its very limits..

I'm talking impact, kinetic gunplay. When I'm shooting something I wanna feel it. I want the enemy to react. Gunplay pace can be slow or fast I like both, but if it feels like I'm shooting paper cutout then it's boring. Just think this game can have the best of both worlds.

The switch had bayonetta release on it though. I'm no game dev but I wouldn't think adding enemy reaction to projectiles and other aiming options would take that many resources from the switch. Who know this also might be releasing on switch 2.

I don't think it's about being tradional or a Nintendo specific thing. It's just people being reasonable in how they judge games.

No one expects Uncharted to have platforming like the 3D Marios, but that's not because they are giving Sony a pass for being tradional.

They just recognise that Uncharted is not a platformer, just like people recognise that Metroid Prime is not an FPS.

To be fair, if Uncharted had decent platforming, I would be way more into it. Honestly, the puzzles are my favorite part of it.

The combat in Prime has been improved even in the Remaster where you can now use gyro aiming in conjunction with the right stick to aim and move at the same time, sometimes that wasn't possible in the previous games. I'm pretty sure Prime 4 will use a similar setup.

It should also be obvious they've shown like the first few minutes of the game which I don't think is indicative of how combat will work throughout the game, there's another thread comparing it to Dread but Dread's combat was nothing special before getting the flash shift, I don't see why Prime 4 wouldn't be the same.

So... I have never played any of the Metroid Prime games but always wanted to because they looked sick at the time. (And I actually still want to play them)

But now I see this trailer and the gameplay looks... extremely dated and boring. Basically auto aim and enemy don't shoot at you and die quickly. Very static gameplay.
Maybe it get better later in the game (I assume this is the beginning areas).

So I am wondering, outside of nostalgia and love for the franchise, does it look real that exciting to some people ?

Maybe I was expecting something different.
Well, it's not primarily a combat game, at all, the auto-aim is good for this franchise since it's primarily focused on adventure, exploration, etc. which doesn't mean the combat is bad, it can get pretty exciting and difficult.

Don't let the first impression of the combat fool you even with what I said tho, you have to press the aim lock button to lock the enemies and, as this game makes you move a lot in combat and switch weapons constantly, it allows you to focus on actual fight strategy, I played Prime Remaster for first time when it came out and even tho I still prefer the 2D ones, it was a great surprise to me, specially the combat with aim lock, it felt very dynamic, fast and enjoyable.

Normal enemies tend to die quickly tho, they're padding in-between harder enemies and bosses, they also tend to be numerous and have you running around to avoid getting hit too much, that's my experience with MP1R at least.

The only thing I didn't like about the aim lock is that the button for it felt completely unnatural in some edge cases when you needed quickly swap weapons or combine them, but that's because it wasn't designed with twin sticks in mind, so I guess it's gonna be fixed in MP4.

The only thing I didn't like from the trailer is that, even tho it looks great, I don't like the extremely flat and smooth surfaces of the characters armor, I guess many love it but I have mixed feelings, preferring more detail, and it doesn't have to do with Switch capabilities, it's just an artistic choice.

Honest question as I don't know anything about this series or Nintendo games in general so this might be the problem but why is this so popular? I watched this video and it looked like a poor man's Halo based on this.
I'm sure I'm missing something or is it mostly popular because this is a historic franchise?
Halo is primarily focused on combat, this is primarily focused on exploration and puzzles, also the combat is significantly different from any FPS, it can cause some noise at first but once you get into it it's intuitive, fast, dynamic... It's just that its a 3D first person Metroid game and it completely shows. Remember Metroid is the base for the "Metroidvania" genre so you can know what to expect in that regard.

I was gonna say it may be just a bad trailer to highlight the combat side of things as there was only a couple seconds of it. I guess it's a wait and see approach.

Unlike Halo (especially the latest instalment) Nintendo will make it a point that this entry is near enough on par with the quality that precedes it..

graphics nice buuuuuut gameplay looks the same so far i hope they add more stuffs
You know, it's Nintendo... They put shit trailers for "first impressions" then throw the actual trailer later when close to release with a Direct for important games. The one I remember the most is SM3DW, everyone complained about that game looking so bland and whatever until they threw a new trailer like 3 months before the game came out and everyone was hyped even if it was for Wii U

IDK I don't play single player modes in Halo but enjoyed the combat in Infinite a lot, I think that game is unfairly criticized. Maybe yes, they should give it to someone else just so it gets a different POV for the franchise and maybe people will like it more, at least the single player.

I never played any of the Prime games. It looks like the gunplay is just auto-lock and pull the trigger. Is there more to it than that? Is the feel of shooting even remotely what the experience is about?

bosses fun buuuuuuuut they need to fix regular ememys encounter

Yeah I would imagine the bosses have particular mechanics to deal with and probably certain attacks that you HAVE to use on them. But watching this trailer I was like, "Uuuuhhh... you kinda don't do much. You're just squeezing a button with no thought other than strafe left or right to not get shot. While the game does the tracking for you". But, I know these games were loved back in the day and the remaster got high critical praise. So clearly someone likes them.

Before the game comes out: Shit sux fucking garbage

After it comes out: I always supported you

I like variety, else I'd be complaining not everything after Sekiro plays like it and therefore is a downgrade lol

Prime 3 had free aiming since it was on the Wii and yes there was more to it, you could use the grapple beam to "overcharge" enemies with phazon (think the Draygon trick but as a universal mechanic), you had a super powered mode where you could use one energy tank to have a much higher DPS but could also overload your suit and die, you could use the screw attack and so on.

And no, the experience isn't about the shooting. Honestly the best way to describe the Prime games to me (and I realize this sounds like some game journalist hogwash but the comparison is justified here) is as a precursor to Dark Souls. It's similar in the sense that the experience is about traversing a dying, hostile world with beautiful vistas, phenomenal atmosphere and excellent level design, finding your way through labyrinthine level design and uncovering the narrative through environmental clues. It's unlike any other game on the market IMO especially now that Souls has distanced itself from its original design to focus more on combat and challenging boss fights.

You are complaining about backtracking in a Metroid game.

That's like complaining about violence in a Mortal Kombat game.

Maybe this particular game is not for you?

Nah man they gotta cut out all the exploration. They should add waypoints and quest markers and shit too. Get ya right to the next bit.

Eh not really but it's certainly not a combat first game. Like most Metroidvanias exploration and some light puzzles is the main thing.

lol this thread has a lot of shit takes but this might be the worst.

backtracking is a staple of the genre and is never a problem when done elegantly. the feeling of getting an upgrade and remembering an area that you couldn't access earlier, but now can, is a core experience of a Metroidvania. Is a game even a Metroidvania if it doesn't have backtracking? Lost Crown is one of the best games this year and like any good Metroidvania, has backtracking. Hollow Knight, Ori, Axiom Verge, Bloodstained, etc. You think they're removing backtracking from Silksong?

people have been trying to use backtracking as a pejorative well before Metroid Prime originally released and it being a terrible opinion hasn't changed.

the number 1 complaint about Dread was that it didn't feel enough like a Metroidvania because it had too little exploration/backtracking.

The Wii trilogy, Prime hack on PC and MP Remaster all have free aim. This will certainly have too.

And now I learned that Dolphin VR exists for Metroid Prime games. Glorious:

The enemies look lame, I liked that environment and music they showed at the end of the trailer though. Hopefully it's more of that and less of that generic looking space station or whatever that's suppose to be.

I know nothing about Metroid lol just going by the trailer what is so special about it?
See:
This is not an action doom game. This is an atmospheric Metroidvania full of environmental puzzles with different abilities available for you to progress. It's all about the mood, the stellar electronic ambient soundtrack, the ha-ha moments when a path opens up… The action that is there is never to stop you on your tracks.

Boss fights can be really good, creative and intense though.

I can honestly say that what I felt yesterday was...hatred? I know that seems maybe just a bit ridiculous given that we're talking about a video game here, but there's something about Nintendo's penchant for withholding content, coupled with their terrible timing, that just makes me see red. They're such fuckers and some of it seems either deliberately spiteful, or inadvertently moronic....either way it sucks.

I'm bracing myself for the Switch 2 backwards compatibility letdown...something is just going to be off there. You can almost feel it.
A simple HD port of Echoes + Corruption would be quick and easy to get out, this makes me think they decided to scrap the HD ports and take their time to fully remaster the visuals for Echoes and Corruption so they both look as good as the first Prime remastered. This would explain their absence, that's what i'm hoping anyway.
