Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

That's a relief to hear. I'm still not crazy about the muddy graphics or the idea of playing another 3DS game, but it's Metroid and the music sounds AMAZING so yeah I'm all in. Putting my money where my mouth is - I've been bitching and it's time I put up or shut up.

People keep bringing up Mirror of Fate, but that game was clearly a product of Konami trying to reboot the franchise and distance itself from the classic formula, whereas the footage we've seen of Samus Returns shows that it's very respectful of its origins and embraces its identity as a Metroid game while adding new things that enhance what it already was.
 
I really don't think Samus should treat her arm cannon that way.
Bludgeoning enemies with the barrel of a gun is just asking for it to be damaged!
 
The graphics looks so bad though...

The gameplay seems ok, I'm not too sure about the counter. But it looks like it'll give plenty off new things to keep Metroid 2 interesting...

Not getting it anyway.

That and if NLG and Silicon Knights are any indication, Nintendo can manage to produce quality titles from typically mediocre studios through proper guidance.
 
Yeah ugh 30fps side scrolling metroid hurts (cry me a river, it matters to me. It affects gameplay) but we haven't got a new proper metroid game in years so I HAVE to support and buy this.


Hopefully it ends up being a solid game overall.

It just kind of makes me happy when people get a chance to shed negative avatars hahah. Finally getting what they've hoped for.
(As for why I asked, "Too soon," I know some may consider MSR to be just a remake of an existing game, therefore meaning the series still isn't alive until MP4)
 
Who would have thought that we would get iga like Castlevania (Bloodstained actually lol) and 2d and prime Metroid games still to this day and after many years.

It truly is a miracle for gaming enthousasts.

Treehouse footage looked perfect.

Now, where have we heard of a troubled studio making a good Metroid game with proper guidance before? Oh yeah, Metroid Prime.

I'd like to point out, that's pretty much how Samus actually plays in Smash Bros. She weirdly relies more on physical attacks and generic kung-fu kicks for her A-moves instead of projectiles.

I suppose this game and Other M have kinda vindicated Sakura's design choices with their reliance on physical combat.

If she can run full speed through bedrock arm out, I think hitting a few enemies shouldn't be an issue.

She should watch out for elevator walls though. Those are surprisingly hard
 
I kinda hope Metroid Prime 4 uses a bit of Samus melee attacks sort of like doom but way less OP and over the top ofcourse (more like a counter like this game).

Coolest addition to Samus Returns imo that melee counter.
 
Mirror Of Fate on 3DS was not a good game, but as someone that beat it, it could have been a good game. It tried to straddle the line between the DS and 'next-gen' Castlevania series and didn't do right by either, but had it been able to push fully in either direction I think it would have been swell. There were hints of a better game in there.

I'm going to preorder this as soon as Best Buy has it and the Amiibos up. I'm pumped.
 
So excited for this. As one of the few that loved Mirror of Fate 3DS & the first Lords of Shadow, Mercury Steam is a really good developer that with Nintendo's guiding hand can be really great. Can't wait.

30 FPS is fine with me, though obviously I'd love 60 FPS. If it's 30 FPS on OG 3DS would be great if it ran at 60 FPS on n3DS. Not sure how possible it is when considering the improved hardware.

Also to those saying it looked rough, it doesn't look nearly as bad natively on the 3DS, IMO. Obviously it would look better if it was 720p on the Switch, but watching the trailer on 3DS it looked better.

I'm sure Konami asked them to make the game the way it was. They were trying to sell their new action-packed Castlevania vision.
 
Yeah, this looked like a solid offering to me. I'm just pleased to have Metroid, and on 3DS too. For us peasants who are yet to buy a Switch, this is a blessing.
 
Mirror of Fate was a low budget stop gap commissioned by fan favorites Konami. Of course it wasn't great. There's a bunch of great elements in the two console Lords of Shadow games, and those were seemingly products of horrendous mismanagement. It's not Konami this time, and as far as I know Enric Alvarez is on their other game.

I don't think it's fair to call NLG typically mediocre, even their budget licensed titles were pretty well received all things considered.
 
Some of the negativity around the game because it isn't the precise thing you desired in fanboy fantasy land is really astounding, given the fact that Metroid wasn't just on life support, but was cold and in the ground for the past freaking decade.

What a glorious Resurrection. Already got my special edition on lock, and am vigilantly scouring for any sign of the amiibo preorders going up!
 
I'm not a gigantic fan like some of you guys are when it comes to Metroid. Never played the originals, only played like half of Prime 3 before I had to return it (it was from Hollywood Video), and I didn't touch Federation Force.

But I do know that many of you have been clamoring for a new Metroid game that stars Samus. We got not one, but two games announced today. Metroid Prime 4 of all things, and Metroid: Samus Returns which is an actual remake! I know that MercurySteam are making the game and they did go down in quality with LoS 2 and MoF, but I am very sure that Nintendo is going to make sure they make something good. Yeah I know about Other M, but that was years ago. Nintendo has changed in my opinion.

So I'm going to buy this game. I'm even going to try and get the Special Edition. I'm very excited for this game! I still play my 3DS even though I have a Switch (cause some people make it seem like the 3DS is dead and I can no longer play it now that the Switch is out for some reason) so I'm not bothered by the platform. I'll even play the Prime Trilogy and get Prime 4 when it releases. Anything to get Samus back into the big leagues.
 
The more I see and impressions I read the more I'm looking forward to it. Can't wait to play some (2d) Metroid again.
 
I fucking love Metroid but can't stand the small size of the machine. Hurts to play more than 10 minutes in most games. Will get to support Metroid, but damn do I wish there was a straight port to Switch too.

If a 2.5D remake that required C&D'ing a far more interesting fan remake of the same game on a system that should be having dirt shoveled on top of it's coffin is Nintendo's method to weigh fan interest I'm not going to get in the way of them sticking a thumb on the scale.

Maybe it turns out great. I'll be dubious up it actually releases.
 
Just catching up on the announcement now but not 100% happy with how this looks and appears to play. Not that those same concerns stopped me from picking up or having a decent time with Federation Force but I'll try not to get too excited about this remake just yet.

Samus can run through walls and defend against power bombs she drops at her feet.

Yeah, it wasn't in the article and I haven't seen anything confirming the framerate just yet. Not that it matters too much to me; I'm usually a stickler for 60 fps because I value low input lag and responsive controls but goddamn it I'm making an exception for the first 2D Metroid game in over a decade. Would be cool if displaying it in 2D on a new 3DS would make it run at 60, but if not I'll be fine!

AM2R is solid. Nothing stellar by any means. Samus Returns has already shown more innovation when it comes to abilities and movement, whereas AM2R was a very formulaic approach to remaking the game.
