Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

Maybe because they're not the same fucking people.

Or maybe because it isn't what some people were expecting. I was expecting something more stilized in the vein of Hollow Knight or Ori, in terms of art. Instead I got these terrible graphics on a 240p screen...
Because there was huge precedent for that, right? You just sound like you want to be mad, frankly.

Metroid isn't being developed by Konami and MS. It's being developed by Nintendo and MS, so being fearful that this will end up like MoF makes no sense.

Fusion might "point" you to where you're supposed to go, but getting there isn't straightforward. In fact, I remember the game actually twisting you around.

Finally watched the trailer. Day 1. Looks really fantastic, and that melee move looks like a fun new mechanic.

Man so many people never thought we'd get another 2D official Metroid, and now there are people talking about FPS on a 3DS game. Not saying you can't have an opinion, but it just comes off as a bit too picky given the situation. I really really cannot wait for this game.

WTF who believes this?

This guy.

Super metroid is great and all but I prefer Prime's slow-pacing. Metroid 2 comes after Super but it's easy to get lost in it.

For the 2D versions, Fusion hits the spot completely. Fast, accessible and a great scenario. I really wish we had a 3D remake of it.

Fusion is great and I'll fight all the haters, those boss battles were the best of the 2D games by a country mile.

To add to Boss Doggie's point, Fusion often showed you a dot on the map and then the obvious path was inevitably locked/blocked so you had to go hunting. A lot of its design decisions were well done for quick burst pick up and play handheld style.

It's amazing to me that even something as positive as a thread about good impressions on a new 2D Metroid game get derailed to hell and back by Metroid fan haters like every other Metroid thread before this E3. Yeah like three people said they're not buying the game over mildly genuine concerns, yeah yeah the Metroid fanbase is the worst etc etc, that helps a lot.

Also scanning in a first person 3D game and getting a scanner or power bombs very late into SM is literally the same as getting the mandatory one in this game 30 minutes into it.

You know you can skip the scan visor entirely right? The map was a welcome inclusion. You can make the game easier or harder as you like. I beaten this game with the barest of items. I also beaten a version of this game that randomly switches the item placement.

If you are hardcore enough there is a version which rotates the screen 90 degrees clockwise.

Is the 30 fps a solid confirmation or was it just the build running at 30 fps? It could be possible this is still being worked on and they could bump it up later before release. Just for the New 3DS.

You can seemingly skip this upgrade too.

Edit: IS it mandatory?

Just a disappointed fan of the series, really. Don't see anything to be excited on the game so far.

even if it is you could, you know, never use it

The same shit people say with other easy games, like Castlevania SOTN... artificially limiting my options don't make the game better in this aspect.

Anyway, I don't really mind this upgrade at all.

Samus had a wack costume in Fusion, but the game looked great at the time and played beautifully. There are bad Metroid games to shit on but that ain't one of them.

I fully expect the game to be plenty of things but absolutely not Metroid II.

For fav 2D Metroid? Depends on the mood really, sometimes it's Super Metroid, sometimes it's Metroid II, when I'm feeling I want challenge it's Metroid 1...
No, not Fusion or Zero Mission though, they're cool and all but far from I want out of the Metroid experience. They certainly have their moments but they're a bit too samey.

Just a disappointed fan of the series, really. Don't see anything to be excited on the game so far.

After Other M, this is basically BotW level of good from what we're seeing so far!
Not saying you're wrong or anything but that Other M was really shite.

Gonna play this definetly. But...uh... I only watched the first 20 minutes of the treehouse footage after the reveal and the leveldesign and item progression feel kinda..straight forward? Also i hope there will be more enemies you can't insta kill with the counter.

Otherwise it looks dope.

WTF who believes this?

I'll add my voice to the chorus. Fusion was my first Metroid game and I genuinely think it's up there (Zero Mission might beat it but it's damned close). Super was too slow, even with the run button, and the first two games were archaic.

Fusion is the game I've beaten multiple times and actually tried varying difficulties. It's the one I love the most for sure. SA-X is fucking terrifying.

Fusion is the best 2D Metroid

Fusion is an awesome awesome game. Metroid 2 and Metroid Fusion are the extreme ends of the formula.

I love Metroid Fusion, even though it's linear. It's tone is almost perfect for me. And the gameplay is a total evolution of Super Metroid (even though I like it more than Fusion in the end).

My personal rank of this series is:

Super > Fusion = Zero Mission = AM2R > Metroid >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Metroid 2.

OK. I don't remember her shoulders changing sizes on gameboy or SNES.

They did in the original M2, but didn't in SM. SM had unique "facing" sprites for the Power Suit vs Varia/Gravity, but the sideways sprites were just recolored.

In M2, the developers stated they had to change the sprite because they couldn't change the palette like they did in the original. So yes, the Gameboy being black and white is the root cause for the Varia Suit looking badass.

Maybe in terms of storyline... Other M looked okay at least. I think this one has some really bad graphics, even for 3DS.

Seriously, this thread has opened my eyes to why Nintendo doesn't want to deal with Metroid. It's the entitled fanbase.
This thread? It should have been obvious when Federation Force was revealed that the Metroid fanbase can not be reasoned with. I tried telling people that the development of FF did not mean a sidescrolling Metroid or a Prime 4 weren't coming, but no.. people started petitions and threw tantrums and screamed about the death of the Metroid franchise just because the 3DS was getting a Metroid spinoff that they didn't like the look of.

Two of my posts from the FF reveal thread:

When Nintendo announces Mario Tennis no one thinks they're doing it instead of a 3D Mario platformer. When Nintendo announces Federation Force 3DS by a small developer everyone thinks they're doing it instead of a Samus Aran entry into the series. That's honestly ridiculous and I can't believe more people don't see it. Nintendo hasn't forgotten about Samus Aran just because they haven't made Metroid into a yearly franchise.
Sounds like there is 1 or more 2D Metroid in the works. There's also Retro's next game which may be Metroid. Hypotethically Retro could be working on a Metroid game that isn't part of the Prime series, while other people have plans to create a Prime 4.

But people were too emotional to listen. Now we're getting 2.5D Classic Metroid which looks excellent, and Prime 4.. and still there's so much negativity.

I'll buy a 2ds xl just to support this game. (Or release it on Switch. Nintendo pleaaaase.)

You guys are being silly complaining about 30fps.

I am very happy with both Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid: Return of Samus. Sure Metroid deserves to launch during the primetime of a console/handheld but MP4 will do that I hope. People complained that software support for wii and wiiu dropped off a cliff and now they come with very interesting titles and people are angry still. Maybe crossplatform would habe been better but I am just super glad we get 2 fucking Metroid games.

Wow, weird seeing so many Fusion lovers here. Don't get me wrong, great game, but I'd definitely say Zero Mission and obviously Super Metroid are better. Super by a long-shot.

Is it just trendy to say a 2D Metroid that's not Super Metroid is your favourite? C'mon, it's clearly the best one..

This is one of those games that will look much better in 3d.

Anyway this game is probably going to bomb coming out on the 3ds now. This would have been better off coming out last year but it seems they had development issues

As for 30fps MP4 better be 60

I still have my original launch 3DS, but I'm considering picking up a New 3DS XL just for this game. I want a larger screen and 3D for this.

I don't think it'll bomb. 3DS is still relevant and you have a 60m+ install base to consider.

I'll probably buy a New 2DS XL for this and then be searching GAF for other game suggestions. Does this have 3D, wondering if I should shell out for an a 3DS XL instead. I live for Metroid!! It's really my one sole Nintendo IP obsession.

Watched yesterday's treehouse stream. Just wow, this looks amazing. The melee makes every enemy a fun reaction time minigame it seems. The sound effects when you have an enemy in sight are awesome. When the lower norfair music kicked in when she entered the lava room it gave me goosebumps.

If it has a special 2ds XL bundle I'll buy that for sure, but the emphasis on 3d during the stream makes me doubt that will happen.

Every 3DS game has bad graphics even for 3DS when seen blown up on a big screen.

They're bad on the 3DS too. Every time people said "but it's look nice on the 3DS, watch the trailer there", I did and though the same.

From an ex-owner of one. Just finished the games I liked (Basically all the Zeldas) and sold it for almost the same price.

No, Other M was shite from the concept to the execution.
Level design was crap on stick, gameflow was a pile of nails they force on your genitals, music was bland and forgettable, controls were schizophrenic.
If anything the story cutscenes were a nice reprieve from the shit bad game.
Oh and on the look part, the enemy design was the worst thing I've seen on wii (certainly the least interesting anyway) and area design was the worst thing I've seen on a product made by Nintendo. Goddamn samey space station hallways.
Metroid : Samus Returns doesn't look that bad when put besides other similar games.
the color schemes really isn't that good, then again it's the same complain I'd have for any sakamoto Metroid post Fusion :/
