That's not the future, that's now. Even if you 'own' something, it's license can be revoked and it can be de-listed within seconds on a publisher/platfom holders whim.

That being siad, the cloud push is not geared towards the 'enthusiasts' either.
We don't need semantics.

The "enthusiasts" will be a dying breed. They don't want physical, MS laid those cards on the table too soon in 2013. Companies had to back it up a bit and do the death by 1000 cuts approach.

As someone who has actually used streaming services over the last few years, the EU almost has this right. They just need to remove the 10 year time limit and push it to all puiblishers. If I could buy a game on steam/psn/xbox and then have a license to use it on any streaming service I want this benefits me the consumer. That's what all this shit is supposed to be about right?

so the EU basically came to the same conclusions as CMA but decided it was okay for Microsoft to build a monopoly and possibly harm competitors because hey they offered 10 year deals (that from what we’ve found out weren’t very fair in the first place)?

wow…
By the time 10 years .Sony might control the market anyway

And how MS can own the market if they are giving away licenses for a decade? By that point every big and small developer would be putting their games into these companies, if it doesn't, it means its a very small market even after all these years.

Because they can't yank those licenses back after 10 years and force everyone to use their cloud services going forward if they want to continue to stream those games.

I can probably guess your console of choice.

Wonderful contribution to the thread.....as always.

Note Lulu's change in tone.

Previously she hasn't slighted the UK regulators. Now she's doing it in a round about way, fully ware that without the CMA the deal is still dead. I'm guessing somebody, somewhere, told her to sit her goofy ass down somewhere. That or she's reading gaf's acquisition thread extensively.

Lol. People here really think that remedies means that Microsoft needs to provide free access to COD for PS Plus?
Nope. It just means that if Sony has cloud service that lets you play games that you own (outside of PS Plus library) and you own COD on your PSN account, Microsoft can't block access to COD through PS streaming.
Same for PC based sub services. If you own your game on Steam/Battle.net and you have cloud service like GeForce Now/Boosteroid, Microsoft needs to provide free license. Which is literally how GeForce Now is working now.

Still is.

This doesn't negate the CMA's decision so.....

UK blocked it, it is dead, nothing has changed.

Dunno... aint over till it's over i suppose.

People on here thought for SURE EU was also gonna block it, so i guess now in Microsoft's eyes there's still hope.

And they have more than enough cash and time to burn trying to turn it around.

The deadline for the deal is July. ABK get 3bn if either Bobby or Lulu aren't responsible for fucking up the deal. Unless MS want to add another good few billion to that 3bn for ABK to continue the fight afterwards.

You've got Geforce Now and all these other cloud providers coming to Microsoft for licenses to ABK products including COD for 10 years. That is a massive amount of control in the cloud market as they will be dependent on Microsoft. MS will be able to yank all those licenses and consolidate these customers under xCloud.

Seems to be a modification of “extend” but with the same goal.

Eh....."people" have been speculating for months now so not sure where any of the "for sure gonna block" comes from. Ultimately, that "hope" begins and ends with CMA. Many of us were saying that even after the FTC decided to block the merger.

EU coming with facts and common sense as expected. Uk went full retard with brexit and blocking this.
Now it will get really political. The fact that 1 regulator can block deals like this is simply not tenable.
The cma wanted to block this deal from the beginning and were looking for excuses its painfully obvious.
Well well well, look who crawled out of a cave to post here after nearly 1 month of silence...
The fact that 1 regulator can block the deal is part of the acquisition contract, since it has to be approved by 4 specific regulators, so it was a known risk for both MS and ATK.
If MS didn't want the risk they could simply not go through the acquisition attempt.

Somehow he is entirely oblivious that the EC is in 100% agreement with the CMA in the threat to competition in cloud gaming. The disagreement is in the remedies.

Sure - I expect that when the remaining decisions from FTC, etc., are finalized - and assuming that "if" they're approved aligned with similar remedies - that we'll see the CAT appeal focus on the "irrational" aspect of the CMA decision....

But who knows?

More importantly ... Back to ma bourbon..

I love how people are cheerleading the EU for common sense when they came to pretty much the same conclusion as the CMA regarding cloud gaming.

The EU regulator applied the tools available to address it's concern for a long enough timeframe for the rest of the market to react. A decade is also enough time for the EU to craft new rules regarding digital licenses to further assauge it's concerns. The UK's decision to block the deal makes very little sense by comparison.

No no no, not those jobs.

Ignoring that these large acquisitions always come with lay offs and downsizing certain areas. Remember the 10K recently that impacted ZeniMax/Bethesda and many other Xbox areas?

I think it is going to be harder to convince CAT that the CMA's decision is "irrational" when EC agrees with CMA on the danger to competition. Remember, CAT cannot overrule the remedy.

EU approving with remedies was a likely outcome. They're in general more open to behavioural remedies.
They still had the same concerns as the CMA, they just disagreed with the extent of the solution. This also means that it will hard for MS going to CAT and tell them that CMA's investigation was irrational.

The decision won't change the outcome for MS/Activision because CMA has blocked and FTC wants to block.
The problem is still the same, in July they will have to decide if it's worth going through at least an other year of this with no certainty of a positive outcome.
With CMA already slamming EU for their decision they're pretty much telling them they won't change their idea.
