Microsoft Raising Prices on New, First-Party Games Built for Xbox Series X|S to $70 in 2023

I think its still a bargain at $70 with the scope of these games

Oh absolutely! At this point, I can't imagine a scenario where Starfield doesn't do very well both critically and commercially (huge tick up in GP subscribers/console sales upon release). As for Redfall, I've been a fan since the announcement trailer and it looks better with every subsequent info drop).

When does Gamepass NOT become a good deal though?, $20?, hell $30?.
When you think how many first party games are going to be released second half of this gen, combined with the odd third party AAA games, and tons of AA and Indies, well it puts it into perspective when comparing against a single $70 game.

I mean to me its obvious they are doing this to drive up Gamepass subs, and it will probably work when you look at how many 'concerned' people are upset over this in here.
$30/month is too steep for many, I'm sure.

That rug pull will be epic. Spencer has already started laying the ground work.
I mean i have been paying $10 for PC Gamepass for about 2.5 years now (except the first few months which were cheaper when it was in beta), do you really think i, and probably most other Gamepass subs, think Gamepass will never rise in price?.
I mean PC Gamepass is already a few bucks cheaper than Ubiosft Connect, which only has around 100 games, and only Ubisoft games. Gamepass has around 450 games on it, including EAPLay and soon Ubisoft themselves.

I dont think there will be many, or even any, Gamepass subs that are not expecting the price to go up at some point.

Time for a change in PR strategy it seems.

Exactly what I was thinking, it was good while it lasted. This sucks, but one great thing about it, at least it makes all the Sony fanboys super happy.
It's not about being happy about it. People like you were preaching for months how Microsoft would never raise the price because Phil Spencer is there, yet here we are. You were naive and preachy and therefore in this case it's extremely satisfying to be able to say: "fucking told you so" lol.

Yeah for most poeple i agree, although IMO it would still be worth it when the first party games start dropping.

Plus i dont think it actually will go to $30 lol, i was just throwing it out there.

Man, sucks but I suppose when you're the last publisher to do it I guess you might as well.

Glad I have game pass but I guess that is there plan. Instant free brownie points for game pass.

Ghostwire has released on the PS5 and still lacks a $70 price tag.
That has nothing to do with Xbox. It has to do with Sony and Zenimax, and the price set in the publishing agreement.
Do you seriously think controller features are why the games cost $10 more? Tempest Audio really doesn't count as Xbox has 3D audio as well. But feel free to believe programming some haptics is why the price increase happened and not the obvious reasons.
Yes, what else they offer for the additional $10 otherwise? 60 FPS? As I said, Sony already updated most of their games to 60 FPS for free. The additional $10 is for those additional features. That's literally how they market the PS5 versions of all their games (Example).

What will XGS be offering for the additional $10?

lol Hilarious to see MS PR score 2 years of goodwill by the virtue of simply not releasing next gen games. It's typical Phil PR speak. Releases zero next gen games for 2.5 years for his next gen console and then when he finally does, raises the price just like his competitor. Such a used car salesman technique this.

This is no different than what Sony has done. Let's not act like they are being wildly different aside from MS waiting longer to charge more.
MS waiting longer to charge more because it's only now their new, next-gen games are slated to come.

If it's not different, then please do tell me what will Xbox offer for the additional $10? At least, PS5 game versions offer haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, Tempest audio, etc.

But what will Xbox offer for the now-increased $70 price?

It was obvious that as soon as they actually had games worth buying, that they'd do this. Hopefully it means they're confident in Starfield. I'm just surprised they announced it before Christmas.

The move in general makes sense as it increases the perceived value of GamePass.

What additional $10? All the games being impacted are next-gen only. There is no $60 version. Even if there was the most important differences are the better performance, visuals, loading times, and audio. Just like on PS5. Controller features are a nice bonus but are not the main draw of next-gen gaming. If controller features are why games cost $10 more then I would gladly turn them off, but they are not.

You're cherry picking controller feedback as the key reason for charging $10 more on PS5 than PS4? Also, 3D audio isn't a Sony exclusive feature.

They are not the main draw for you because you haven't used them on Xbox. That's not the case for the majority of PS gamers, which is why PS5 versions of the same game outsells PS4 versions. And which is why, as I showed you, Sony promotes these features to sell their PS5 game versions.

No problem, people here convert Live Gold to Gamepass Ultimate...

No one actually buys games...
25 million Gamepass subscribers, including PC GP subscribers. So more like 20 million Xbox GP subscribers. Total Xbox users = 60 million.

So nearly 70% of Xbox gamers don't subscribe to Gamepass and prefer buying their games. This affects those 70% Xbox gamers.

The latest GOW, GT7 and LoU games sell better on PS5 than PS4?

I do not get the outcry. 70$ today isn't the same as 70$ 10-20 years ago when 60$ games became the norm. The attach rate for most consoles is between 6-8 over the console's lifetime. The types buying 5-10 full priced retail games per year are the exception. Price increases suck but they are unavoidable.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

But those are optional, and a lot of people turn them off or don't use them on a system level even.

Why are they forced to pay the extra $10 for it ? 🤔

Nintendo is now the last holdout. But doubt that it will remain 60 dollars when they kickstart the 10th gen.

No, they are not the draw for me because while they are nice they are hardly the most important things this gen has bought. Nor does implementing them cost $10.

Obviously I have not used them on my Xbox. I use it plenty on my PS5 though, although outside of Astro and a bit of Returnal nothing has made me overly excited about it.
