Microsoft Raising Prices on New, First-Party Games Built for Xbox Series X|S to $70 in 2023

I'm going to bet that GP price is going to increase and/or they're going to stop releasing games day one on the service in the future if they don't hit their subscriber goals.

If they don’t hit their subscriber goals, doesn’t that mean more people are buying at retail for full price?

I’m not sure I understand this fantasy world where GP stalls and yet retail is supposed to crater to levels as if everyone has GP.
It's easy to not raise the price when you don't release any next-gen game.

…but their competition raised prices on next gen versions of cross gen games, 2 years ago.

Nobody is pointing fingers, people are just giving back the same shit Sony received.

well there is a choice which you don't get on PS, yeah games have gone up which isn't a good look on either console but with Gamepass you can still play them on day one without paying £70 or do yo have an alternative to that on PS

B-b-but I thought Xbox was the good guy and other companies were just evil when they raised the price of their games!!!1

I can't wait to pay 29,99€ monthly for Game Pass once the Activision deal goes through and Microsoft feels like they have something to offer people can't refuse not to pay. It's only a matter of time.

I do like that MS has not increased prices of their console or games and there is no evidence that their game quality is falling so maybe they are the only ones who can do it.

If you are saying he is lying about raising the price I applaud your consistency.

Also as an aside Phil never said Xbox pricing would never change only that is remaining the same for now. I don't like price increases but at this point I haven't see one from Xbox at least.

On one hand we have a fear of a possible, maybe, vague potential of a price increase on possibly a service or console or accessory. On the other hand we have actual real price increases on consoles and games. I'm sure I know which one you are far more concerned about but I tend to focus on reality over possibilities. Talk when the Xbox price increases are real and not imaginary.

People try so hard for a gotcha and it just ends up being a self own. It is what it is.

Time for a change in PR strategy it seems.

Okay, guys, hear me out.
  • PlayStation launched all PS4 games at $60, even after PS5's launch. They only charged $70 for PS5 (next-gen) games.
  • Xbox tried scoring points for not releasing games for $70. But they never actually launched a next-gen only game during this period.
  • Now when those next-gen only games are launching -- Starfield, Redfall -- they are gonna charge $70.
So what's the difference b/w Xbox and PS, and why did Xbox and Xboxers criticized PS for raising prices to $70? 🤔

Can't wait to see the new narrative the green rats will come up with to attack Sony on game prices. That DarkMage poster in particular.
Odd statement, both Sony and Microsoft have only released 3 next-gen games each. Sony has obviously released more AAA titles this gen so far but they have almost all been cross-gen games. Next-gen only games have been a let down from both of them

Watch.

well obviously they had to increase the price of games in line with everyone else eventually

well obviously they have to increase the price of Game Pass from £10.99 considering all the £69.99 games you get on it, it’s still the best value in gaming™’

well obviously they had to increase the price of games to £79.99 to match PS6 games, what did you expect?

well obviously they have to increase the price of Game Pass from £17.99 considering all the £79.99 games you get on it, it’s still the best value in gaming™’

Just mix in some ‘look at their overheads with ABK, of course they have to increase prices’ and you’re golden.
Folks are already writing up their speeches if gamepass or console prices go up.

I think this could be their incentive for unsubscribed to sub to gamepass. In any way, it's sad but nothing we didn't expect, sadly.

kinda funny you put that but gamers have choice and can play on Gamepass day one. so who's really laughing now? right back at you
What's funny is that Xbox fanboys called Sony raising the price to $69.99 an anti-consumer practice.

NOW that Xbox first-party games are the same price, the narrative switches to, "At least games are on Game Pass."

Anyone can pretty much hedge against this by stacking up three years of GP. Keeps you sorted to 2026.

But GT7, Ragnarok and Horizon FW are cross gen games…not sure how your argument makes any sense.

It's kinda wild how some folks can't see this.

I'm pretty sure everyone in this thread knows Sony raised game prices before MS.

And I'm pretty sure there are some in here that had a good time giving Sony shit for doing it.

Hell, Sony wasn't even the first to go to $70 games this gen.

I'm just making a prediction. Stop getting defensive.

They did release next-gen only games. Flight Simulator, Deathloop, and Ghostwire. If you are referring to games with a next-gen version then Microsoft has released 9 games this gen so far.

Starfield was a $60 2022 game that is now a $70 2023 game thanks to a small delay. Dont think many people are going to see value on Redfall at $70, but to each their own. Forza yeah sure if youre into that (im not).

Xbox did not release any AAA first party games since Halo/Forza horizon 5 in november 2021 if im not mistaken, so skip a full year and pretend you "held off" on raising prices lol.

I have gamepass but I'm expecting an increase on that soon as well.

Honest question, what makes you think they won't be increasing GP price?
You think they will be like "we gonna increase the prices of games because productions costs are higher but don't yah worry you can still not pay up by going to GP, making our increased prices for development of AAA games redundant"?

Flight Simulator and Deathloop aren't brand-new releases, though. They couldn't launch Flight Simulator for $70 when they had already launched it on PC for $60 a year ago.

They have increased the prices just before brand-new next-gen releases, Starfield, Redfall, Forza, etc.

This. I gave sony shit for raising prices and I get their games 2nd handed or discounted. I refuse to pay 100+ cdn after tax for a game no matter the company.

they may do, and I will argue its anti consumer to raise the prices of it when they do but at this moment they haven't.

Didn't they already tried raising it but the backlash was pretty big. It's only a matter of time. Nearly all entertainment subscriptions got more expensive the past year.
No that was Gold.

Deathloop launched at 59.99 USD on XSX though.

I think this affects those that don't use gamepass. Which I'm guessing is still plenty of people.

according to most people on here though most people don't buy games any more they only use Gamepass. when ever you bring up that Microsoft games sell still its always shot down on here

Sure they could have. Deathloop and Ghostwire they could have charged $70 when they released on PS5 but they didn't. Nevermind the 6 other games that had Series versions that were not $70.

Are there people who thought this was not going to happen? It's pretty clear that it took them long enough because they've only been releasing cross-gen/smart delivery games so far (aside from Flight Simulator, which was a 1 year old PC port anyway).
