Microsoft Studios (& Partners) Current and Future Landscape

Does it matter who markets a game? You still get it on other platforms.

The only cool thing is that we're going to see it on Scorpio i bet and that's nice, because I'm sure AC is a good showcase title.

I saw you guys mentioning Ashen, whatever happened with that? Must be like two years that we haven't seen it. Hopefully they have an update for us. At least we know Cuphead is still coming but nothing on Ashen.

It's Assassins Creed, or at least that's the popular opinion.

Also, seeing that Dan Ayoub has went to MS Mixed Reality and will be working alongside Casey Hudson..... can I dare to dream?

By the wording on his leaving note, he went to work on educational tools for MR there, not really gaming related

Ok you have a point there. He wants to see what the future of Xbox is looking like before buying one. I can understand that. Personally I am already OK with how Xbox is and will gladly buy Scorpio because at the end of the day I prefer Xbox over PS4. Not in terms of exclusives but everything else.

That's not to say I don't hope for a better future when it comes to first party or at least cool exclusives whether they come from a first party or a deal like Sunset Overdrive. But if I had been sticking more with PS4 from the get go and not much changes for Xbox in terms of exclusives I can understand not wanting to bother with Scorpio.

Not with Scorpio, specially if they don't own a good 4K tv, but surely people could give the slim a chance if it had a nice, cheap bundle with an exciting game. A Fable one will surely make me bite. I was considering the Scorpio but I decided to wait for my OLED 65 4K upgrade until at least BF 2018 so it doesn't make much sense, atm.

Also I've been toying with the idea of getting a switch to play my first Zelda. Being a long time Sega fan first, and PC gamer later, I never had a chance before

That Banjo tweet is interesting but probably nothing to get excited about. But it would be insane if they get to announce it at E3, small levels similar to BK is exactly what we need. Yooka is nice for sure, but it didn't necessarily need such huge open levels.

I do wonder if this maybe means he has spoken to MS about it and that this could perhaps happen after Sea of Thieves has released. It could be a smaller budget title like Recore was but using the Sea of Thieves engine and maybe cost around 35 to 40 bucks.

And as for that mixed reality game, cool I guess. Can't really get excited about that though. Never have been for VR or AR. Rather have a MS studio work on a game for the controller and that has a SP focus or at least mode as well.
It's a pipe dream of mine, but it would be awesome if Studio Gobo is working with Rare on a Banjo game

Ashen dev is advertising on twitter for playtesters so I think it's coming along nicely! Prob just focusing on dev

Now is perfect timing for Microsoft to help Team Ninja revive Ninja Gaiden and showcase it through the power of Scorpio. Ninja Gaiden/DOA were exclusive to original Xbox cause it was a graphics powerhouse. Sony helped with street fighter so do the same with ninja Gaiden Microsoft

If MS made a deal with Team Ninja.. then what happens?? We will get a mediocre Ninja Gaiden game or DOA 6..

The mastermind and other talented people from Team Ninja who were responsible for the success of NG and DOA left Team Ninja.. And I am not even sure they still got "it" judging their last game Devils Third for the WII U.

Ultimately, working a deal with Team Ninja would be like MS purchasing Rare with none of the original talent on board..

P.S
MS only seems keen on multiplayer games.. :-(

Why would you automatically assume a new Ninja Gaiden would be mediocre? The team just made Nioh and that game has been pretty well received.

I was going by NG 3 results.....

Itigaki was also very creative and a perfectionist.. compare the art style between NG 1 and 2 versus Nioh..

No offense.. but NG blows it and that was over a decade ago!!

anyways, current Team Ninja would rather make a deal with Sony as evidence shows..

Oh man, a 65 inch OLED? That's crazy, haha. I have a OLED myself but sadly not 4K. And I'm afraid that won't happen until next year for me. Ah well. OLED is sublime though.

If Gobo has the talent for it, hell yeah. The only thing we know is that they are looking for people to work on a third person action game, correct? There was also something about F2P but then they also partnered with Ubi, so bit hard to know what is what. Whatever the case is right now with Banjo, when/if MS greenlights one i hope MS doesn't meddle in it and lets Rare go all out with it.

Good to hear that about Ashen. Could be something really special.

I agree with you about NG shitting on Nioh. But I wouldn't discount the team until I saw a new NG game. I never played 3 so I cannot comment on it but it has been a while since that game came out.

I think what MS wants is just GaaS.

And that model can work with single player, just have to find a way to make sure it's revenue goes beyond just that initial purchase. Multiplayer inherently has stuff in place to allow for further monetization, while the previous tried and true method of single player DLC in the form of expansion packs or additional story content only works if the game is successful enough to warrent that additional dev time in the first place.

That's, imo anyway, why they made Game Pass. If they can add value to a subscription with exclusive content, even if it's single player, then the revenue from the subs might be more lucrative than the profits from a more traditional experience.

Think of a game like Hitman for instance. I certainly enjoy the series but after a $60 absolution purchase, I decided to wait and pick up the game after everything was available, but by the time the game released a complete version I was playing other and newer things.

Now imagine if it was used to add value to something like Game Pass, with each episode released day 1 for subscribers, with the option to buy. I can't say if it would have prevented the situation we are seeing with IO today, but I do believe the model could have worked better than what we got.

It'll be Halo 5 dlc. Halo 5 is going into gamespass and it's gonna get another boost to the player base. To make it even more attractive you do something like remaster 5 or whatever many halo 3 maps and have a separate mode with those maps in it. Add some armor reqs and there you go

Anyway they would've likely only shown a CGI trailer anyway. We didn't get a campaign gameplay of halo 5 until E3 2015

Good indeed.

No need for Halo 6, give us H3A implemented into a fixed MCC, ported to W10 with cross-save and cross-play.

That should fix a few burnt bridges.
Do you know how much work that'd take. Plus I'm pretty sure frank has said multiple times they are looking ahead, not back in regards to MCC

This goes with what I said I don't think Halo 6 is coming out in 2018
I still think it's 2018. We got a cgi thing in 2013. Nothing in 2014 E3, multiplayer reveal and better in winter 2014 and full reveal at E3 2015

Halo 6 will still come out in 2018. I always had a feeling they might not show it, didn't think they actually wouldn't though.

Phil seems to be serious about the whole not showing games until they're about to release, in which case for better or worse, prepare for an extremely boring E3. My guess is they will only show games planning to release before E3 2018.

I'm fully aware of how much work it would take, and still don't think its unreasonable to ask. You don't leave the titles that made you what you are today in such a shitty state and just walk off with no answers, and since that's exactly what they did it will forever remain a giant stain on their record. There's arguments to made for Halo 4 and Halo 5 at least, but the MCC will never have that.

Do I think it will actually happen? nope.

But it should.

I mean halo 5 dlc would be a much better showing than halo wars 2 dlc. Don't think anybody really cares about that

The hate for Halo runs deep

I care about Halo Wars 2 dlc, as I'm sure others who have bought the game do.

But yeah let's ignore the game just because you didn't buy it.

MCC is functional now, which is about all I think we can expect at this point. The whole thing is apparently a gigantic house of cards; forget porting it, even trying to implement further fixes could break everything.

No H6 at E3 is really curious. My vet is that they're going to be leaning heavily on their mixed reality output to fill up the show. Guess we'd better hope that the HoloLens studios are producing good stuff lol.

I don't hate halo I just don't think it's needed

we know it's coming in 2018 why bother showing it? the only games that should be shown 1+ year ahead of release should be new IP's
I say it half jokingly. Some would rather it not exist. But you are right, it's not particularly needed since it's not going to be a deep dive into 6 anyway

Im not saying ignore the game. Put out a video or Xbox wire or have it diluting one of the daily shows. No need for actual stage time

Maybe the most important thing to note is that MCC currently has no monetization hooks in it, which makes future updates/content for it (if it was paid content) less likely.

This is definitely something that people should get their heads around as a real possibility. Phil has stated many many times that they announced things too early in the past and he doesn't want to do that, yet some people here will expect them to come out at E3 and be like "here's our 2018 lineup". That's probably not going to happen.

No Halo 6 at E3!!! Woohoo!!! Awesome. Hope it stays that way.

I have no problem with Spencer not wanting to show games that won't be released until after E3 2018 until next year's E3.

Show me what im going to be playing for the rest of 2017 and early 2018. That's what I care about. Not games that are literally years and years away. All that does is lead to getting overhyped and overexposed and eventually being a disappointment.

Microsoft having the marketing deal for AC isn't surprising at all and if anything, was expected. Seeing it run off Scorpio has me pumped. Marketing deals are only bad when you get exclusive content for one console that won't appear on the other or if it's a timed but at the same time, there's an easy way around this - own both consoles.

I own a PS4 Pro and an Xbox One Slim. Will trade in the Slim towards Scorpio once it gets close to being released. Console wars and fanboys is beyond stupid because all that person is doing is hurting themselves by limiting what they can play.

As a single player gamer, im heavily favored towards Sony's exclusives but at the same time, I will always own both consoles so when games come out for that other console that I want to play, I know I can do so without any problems.

Now that Horizon Zero Dawn is in my completed list, my next big exclusive is State of Decay 2 baby!!! Hoping for an October release and that it's close to Scorpio.

Seriously, 2017 has been excellent thus far and will only get better as the year moves forward. Microsoft's E3 has me pumped and hyped not for games that are years away but for State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3 as im very interested in seeing what this game is all about. Four more weeks to go from this Sunday!!! Can't wait!!!
