Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

I've only played for an hour or so so far, but for a game that wasn't on my radar at all a week ago, I'm really enjoying it. Combat is incredibly fun.

The entire fucking game? Fuck thats gonna take 5 hours, not doing that.

You don't need to redowload the whole game. Just going to the webstore and selecting download sent me to my download list and all the pre order stuff appeared.

Sony needs to work on this. The same shit happened with Watch Dogs.

Disclaimer; I think Destiny is fun also

Turn off the indicators, Good luck.

Edit: This is especially true when you have 2 enemies attacking you at once.

Try with the indicators off.

It seems to be a gaming background kind of thing. I'm watching the Giant Bomb QL right now and they seem to be saying that the game gets much more complex as it goes on.

I'm going to go into the game with that mindset and not write off the difficulty too quickly.

Hmm... gonna keep monitoring the situation then. No way I am dropping launch price on a game until I am sure. Nothing pisses me off more than a dud game purchase.

PSA: Amazon digital vouchers working now.

Edit: Well, SEN web store redeems the code, but doesn't show up in the download list/queue. So currently unable to push the game to the PS4, and being at work I can't verify whether anything would be different on the PS4 itself.

Edit 2: Shows up on the store proper now and can be pushed.

The difficulty ramps up in a similar manner to the Arkham games. In fact, SoM practically throws the same types of enemies at you: one that needs active dodging, one with a shield that needs to be attacked from behind, ranged enemies, one that needs to be stunned before being attacked, etc. I think they unlock from story missions, so if you're avoiding those it will seem very easy for a while. But the difficulty ramps up much higher than the Arkham games because of the open-world nature of the game. You can very easily find yourself overwhelmed or outclassed because of the environment or because of the nemesis system (from e.g. enemy's strengths, your ignorance to their strengths, or surprise visits from other named enemies).

There's also more straight-up combat mechanics than batman, mainly because of the environmental and enemy interplay with one-another. Also, nemeses and their gosh-danged ambushes. So it leads to a lot of very frenetic situations, especially if you're in a fortress that's alarmed. You can escape whenever you want... but you'll never want to.

All of this has been gleamed from only the first area so far. Aside from some of the writing and traversal, I find the game to be incredibly well done and a whole lot of fun. Unlike a lot of Arkham-alikes, this game manages to actually take things a step further via fully utilising the open world and greater hardware capabilities.

One last thing, a lot of the nemeses seem forgettable, but then you come across one or two that stay with you and the system clicks. It's great, terrifying, and enraging at the same time.

I'd rate the game 1/10. 'Cuz, y'know... The One Ring rules them all.

The thing is even with the indicators on, the game can quickly become difficult. I posted a little bit earlier that I easily got surrounded by 5 captains and got overwhelmed very easily. Could I have run off and fought another day? Sure. However, I wanted the challenge so I think you might enjoy it.

(;・∀・)ハッ?
So I wanted to play for 2-3 hours and ended up playing for 5,5, streaming the whole time (yay, 84 viewers at one point).
Usually open world games bore the hell out of me, but this one has some kind of charm, mostly because the focus on combat and captains whom you just want to kill, since they're so annoying.
At first I was dying a lot, because I was rushing into large groups of enemies and haven't really grasped the combat, but near the end I was cutting through hordes of Uruk without breaking a sweat.
My favorite moments were the chases when captains decided to retreat. Not one succeeded.
Also, when I was ready to turn off my console, I ran into an enemy stronghold chasing after a captain. During the fight or right after, a second one appeared. When I killed him, right off the bat, THIRD AND FOURTH appeared right beside me. One of them was killed by me 2 times already (his face kept degrading, it was a bit funny) and in the end he almost killed me - luckily, my final blow (the one before you die) one hit killed my old "friend". The other one was no challenge at all. In the end I grabbed 4 runes lying around and turned off the game.
So much fun!

That is a good thing.
Execution sequence with invincibility frame is stupid.
You shouldn't be allowed to to perform your 1hr execution scene without an enemy deciding you are taking too long bro.
Yes, but at the same time it just becomes a game of interruption. I see both as a negative sort of.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
RE: Pre-order bonuses on PS4.

None of them installed with my copy during pre-load. Went back to the PSN store and on the gamepage a drop down menu showed up with two options, one having the 'purchased' icon and the other just stating 'free'. Switched to free and all of a sudden all the pre-order stuff automatically downloaded for me.

Some people have had similar issues so I recommend doing that to get the superior costume and whatever else.

I think the initial reports of 60fps are partly due to this game actually having a really good motion blur implementation.

The report actually came straight from the developer

“It’s definitely 1080p and we are going to do everything we can to get to 60 frames per second, ” Monolith’s Studio Head Kevin Stephens said in a 2 hour long live stream of the game conducted by TwinGalaxies.

The combat system sure as hell is. Now you can't just get up and start flying everywhere in RYSE obviously, but the central gameplay mechanics of RYSE seem exactly the same as Shadow of Mordor, and the other games you mention.

No. I have all these games. Ryse has by far the most linear world and the weakest combat by a country mile. It's. Just. Not. Even. Close.

Dem graphics however, that's a different conversation.

I usually don't defend games but th Ryse comparison is such bullshit. Ryse never changes. The game u play at the beginning is the game u play at the end. The upgrade system in Ryse is the WORST in a modern action game I have ever seen.

Playing SOM it felt easy so I began jumping into battles and found myself surround by 5 or more uruks and kept dying. U definitely need to research the weaknesses and pick your spots. You don't start the game off as God, but after 2 hours I already have more options going into battle than I had at the end of Ryse

So, is this a must buy for fans of the action stealth genre on the PS4? Does it run at 1080p 60fps with no major issues? Is there plenty of content to justify the price?

Okay so this game is too easy is that right? Oh man, that's a deal-break. They were doing so well but a game with no challenge doesn't really scratch any itch for me. And no difficulty settings is just inexcusable. And for that reason I'm out.

Not every game needs to be Dark Souls hard. If the difficulty were much higher, then it would be a deal-breaker for me (and everyone else who doesn't feel like dying hundreds of times over the course of a playthrough just to cater to the 1% who want their games unreasonably hard). Adjustable difficulty would have been really nice, but doing so might have led to balance issues with Nemesis, hence the single difficulty.

(And the on-screen indicators can be turned off. *That* would make the game significantly harder, no doubt.)

Yes, you do press buttons to attack people in all of those games. Might as well wait for Ryse on PC it has better graphics anyway.

jesus christ what is with the kneejerk assumptions in this thread, have you ever maybe thought that a game possibly gets more difficult as you make progress???

Absolutely. I was stupid and ran into a fight against a captain with a shield thinking I could just jump over him and attack from behind. Not only could I NOT do that, but I couldn't grab or anything to allow me to have the advantage. Interrogating orcs is almost a necessity for the reasons I just described.

Thanks.

Played for a hour, just going to reconfirm that SOM is basically iAssassin's Creed in Mordor with an Arkham-like fighting system. Game is really fun, story seems interesting.

You're welcome. It saves your game but always sends you back to the tower nearest your last location.

The internet can deffo eat a dick this generation...So much lies about it being 720p and 30 vs 1080p and 60. I'm fed up with it!

If it ends up being 900=30 vs 1080=30 then I think devs just need to get out there first and be straight up with the gamers about the tech.

I can get it 4 pounds cheaper on xbox and get achievements/be in an OS I like, I got thrown off becuase of internet jerks!

Guys this fucking game, this game!!!!!

So I'm fighting the guy who killed me muzglob, and then all of sudden he activates an ability called hate of defeat and he regenerates all of his health. I'm like "nope" and run away and while running away I run into another captain-_-

I start fighting the Muzglob and the second captain at the same time with other orcs, the second contain in invulnerable to jumping over him so it make the fight even harder. I'm close to killing the second captain and he decides to run away and say that he'll let his boys know about this. I decide he won't get that chance and killing him instantly. Then I proceed to finish off muzglob, the hate in me wanted to kill him but then I got an even more fiendish thought, I'll get some info from him. If only I had brand, I'd make him my minion ahahahahahahahah.
thanks for that mate,my hype level is through the roof now.don't get it till friday though,as i'm from the uk :(

Game is amazing. Had some challenging bits even from the start, but once you know what you're doing you fly right through the part that was holding you up. Game is very rewarding, super slick presentation, combat is great, lore everywhere - tons of stuff to read to refresh your memory or find out what's up in the world of LotR, story is to the point and well told so far.

I never thought I'd be interested in LotR again but this game man, this game fuckin' rules.

Stealth is not the game’s selling point but it is possible, and can be rewarding.

Plenty of action. A lot like Batman in that you can swarmed by baddies but, with careful and calm technique, you will be wrecking everything.

I played for hours last night and feel like I barely scratched the surface of things to do. Momentum picks up with the more powers you unlock it seems.

The game looks and runs flawlessly on the PS4. I am really impressed since my PC was chugging during many parts, though that was with tessellation turned on. The framerate was remarkably smoother on the PS4, I would say it’s definitely up to 60fps levels, though the devs have said plenty of times that it’s 60fps unlocked. No screen tearing, however, which is great.

They really do need to work on this.
This happened to me too on Infamous and Destiny.

Lol I forgot about Destiny!

Bought the Guardian Edition and on the store only the regular edition appeared as purchased.

Both the Vanguard DLC and the Season Pass were missing.

Eventually the DLC showed up on my download list.

i literally just started the game after the intro, walked out into the open and immediately got into a fight with like 5 captains...wtf happened lol

I find it pretty funny that no one can give a straight answer on framerate. I'll just have to see for myself after work.

They probably ambush you on purpose to jump start the nemesis system.

After spending a good amount of time with the game, it has too many flaws that will keep it from being GOTY material IMO. First, the main aspect of the game which is the combat. It is simply too easy..there is even one side mission where you
have to kill 50 enemies in a pit, and the bonus objective is to get a hit streak of 100.
The combat in this game is laughably easy. Even the named orcs, regardless of power level are easily taken down (and this is not even using their weaknesses/fears).

This causes a problem for what the entire game is based on, the nemesis system. Because you should rarely (or never in some peoples cases) die to the named orcs, you never get to really fully experience the nemesis system. What nemesis do I have when I've killed any named-orc I run into with ease? I think the lack of difficulty options or general difficulty has really hurt the potential for what this really could have been.

Another flaw more on the technical side of things, the character movement is abysmal. The movement is awkward when starting up and stopping, it just doesn't feel right. When it comes to climbing and hanging from things, the game can be real glitchy or weird when you want to do a certain action but can't seem to make it happen on screen the way you see it planned out in your head. I.E. the climbing/traversal on structures can sometimes be awkward.

I think these flaws hold the game back from being truly great. Complaints aside, the game is fun at the end of the day, which is why we play games. Although, I can see the lack of challenge being a major put off for some people.

Ok, I gotta post this part. I was just wondering around an outpost, slaying orcs when a small dude about 30ft away spouts the following, "I've stayed alive a lot longer than everyone here and I still haven't gotten promoted." Laughed my ass off. I let him live.

Their way of introducing you to the Nemesis system. Get overwhelmed and killed to learn how the promotion stuff works and to quickly fill in several slots of unidentified captains.

First time I've ever had a problem with Steam.

Preloaded yesterday, started my PC tonight and it's sitting in my dl list at 99% and won't budge.

Verified files, changed dl region etc but nothing works.

Did you have issues with Infamous unlocked framerate? They feel like the same for me.
