Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

I'm about 5 hours in. This is a really fun, but horribly derivative game. It's straight up plagiarism, lmao.

But yeah, it's fun. I'm not seeing the fuss over the nemesis system though. It's just kind of there. I mean, okay?

Finished it. Awesome game although it got way too easy later on. It just seems like every captain/warchief could be defeated using either stun -> flurry or vault stun -> flurry. Also, boss battles were pretty lame except maybe against
the Hammer
, he actually put up a decent fight.

Was so overpowered when I finally reached
Nurn, that branding the remaining five warchiefs wasn't nearly as fun as killing off the first five.
It kinda became a chore at the end - a pretty fun chore, though.

Just been sent this by my game rental service. Should arrive tomorrow and i'm looking forward to getting stuck into it as it seems to have been a surprise hit.

Unfortunately i have a wedding this weekend so my gaming time is going to be limited :(

This game is so badass once you unlock the majority of the abilities. I can dispatch entire orc fortresses, including Captains, within a couple minutes. It's glorious watching fountains of blood and heads flying through the air.

I think it's by far the best part of the game.

Whether it's interfering with a duel or ambush between two Captains and helping the "weaker" captain win, sabotaging a feast or a beast hunt, "escorting" a captain that's on your side through the ranks to have him in a more powerful position, or dying to a random Orc/Uruk and seeing him promoted - they're all great ways to make the game more personal and make each playthrough feel more unique. You could watch a Youtube video of someone playing any of the Assassin's Creed games and know that you would've had 98% the exact same experience. You can't say that about Shadows of Mordor. Having captains suddenly pop up in other missions, forcing you to change your approach on the fly adds a dynamic to the game that similar open world games are missing and (along with the game's smaller size and relatively short length) greatly helps alleviating the problem with repetition many other games in the genre run into.

It's by far the best aspect of this game (imo) and I hope there's no shitty patent on it so other games can take inspiration and implement similar systems into their open world games. It would fit really well into many other settings (basically any time a player character opposes a big organisation, which is a super common story trope in videogames).

Finished the story missions today. 17 hours, 76% total completion. I might go in for 15-30 minutes every now and then to clean up the side stuff and mess with the Orcs.

By the way. Is there any way to get the pre-order costume if you haven't pre-ordered the game? The answer is probably no, but it's worth a shot.

I didn't pre-order the game and I got it. Just came in the case as a code.

I understand the hate, but this is still my GotY, so far.

For me, it's more important to do something well than do something new. Check out Shakespeare as an example of this phenomenon. His best plays were not original stories.

You literally just compared this game to Shakespeare.
I cannot wait to play it.

Just updated, i'm about to test out Photo Mode now. :D

keep me posted real excited about this, i think every game on ps4 should have this mode. It really lets the game shine graphically. I took so many pics with infamous and the last of us I almost broke my ps4

Need some advice regarding the (M) upgrades:
I now have 4 health upgrades and 1 rune for each weapon. Should I be going for the fifth health upgrade now, or perhaps for more runes, or even focus/elf shot? Or perhaps even for the really expensive ones?

First time I've seen the weakness Fear of the Gravewalker. It's pretty hilarious, you show up and he immediately starts running.

I finished the game but am tempted to start a new game with all combat notifications off and to have fun with the photo mode. I'm also running into new and interesting captains but I'm op since I'm leveled up and would like to go through the same process that I did when I first started when things were tougher and captains invading me in combat made things even more tense.

So I'm up to the part where the nemesis system really comes into play, now I wish there was another 20 hours, manipulating it all is fantastic!

Platinum complete. This is the first game I have ever gotten a platinum trophy on. I might hop on every once in a while to mess the the captains and warchiefs, but yeah I'm pretty much done. Loved it though.

How will photomode work on the xbox version? As far as I'm aware it doesn't have a screenshot feature yet, so only people with a capture card or something will be able to fully use it.

Is this the type of game where when you beat it you never pick it up again? Is it worth 30 bucks?

I doubt you'd go back to it once you've completed everything which can take anywhere from 20 - 40 hours, I think (main story itself is closer to 8 - 15 hours of content).

The game can be very satisfying and the crossplay between systems can result in some very interesting emergent gameplay scenarios, but do realize that the combat, which is what you will probably spend most of your time doing, is very shallow and doesn't require much effort from the player. It's extremely flashy and the visual presentation is top-notch, but don't expect much depth from it.

I think it's easily worth $30 or more.

All I heard was this game compared to Assassin's Creed when in reality this game is so much better than every assassin's creed game I have ever played, better combat and stealth that's for damn sure

What do you know, I turn it on today and surprise surprise, now there is a photo mode

Trying to get the poison a captain at his own feast trophy, fucked up my first attempt and I've been advancing time for the past 30 mins and no feasts will pop up. Am I doing something wrong?

This game is so fun. I'm bad at it so far (only played two story missions -- been just running around the world stirring up shit), but it's been a blast.

Once you reach the point where you have your combat drains and you can use your finishers twice the game does get rather easy.

Stun/Vault Stun -> Flurry -> Combat Drain Brand -> Combat Drain Brand -> repeat. Within a few combos you have so many branded orcs around you that they'll pretty much do the rest for you.

Having said that though, Branding made the game a lot more enjoyable. I'm almost at the point where every Warchief/Captain in the second area belongs to me. I'll have to head back to the first area for some of the achievements, I'm pretty intent on getting the platinum for this.
