Astros might not even tender a contract with Aoki after the Reddick signing.

Which, kinda makes sense seeing as there is a log jam now with Outfielders and with the rumors still saying they are pursing Beltran along with Napoli.

This is crazy, who are these Astros?

This year's Diamondbacks. And the Padres of last year...

That being said, the Astros seem to have a management group that knows of what it is doing, instead of throwing money at the wall and seeing what sticks like the teams I mentioned because they had a payroll bump.

Last year's Diamondbacks actually did not increase payroll at all last year compared to the year before, even with Greinke, because Kendrick is an idiot.

That was contracts coming off the books, correct?
Yeah, most of it was big contract shedding, but a lot of that was also handled stupidly, like Bronson Arroyo + Touki Toussaint to the Braves. Opening up the pocketbooks for Greinke demands more than a $100M team salary, which the team still didn't do.

The lone bright spot was trading Aaron Hill for Jean Segura. That was a huge performance gain at a fraction of the salary.

Blue Jays are looking at Blevins. Wouldn't be surprised if he was their Cecil replacement. Kinda crazy the deal Cecil got, wonder what Blevins will get.

A sensation in Korea -- can Eric Thames make it back to the MLB?

Korea's contributions to Major League Baseball have run the gamut in recent years. Jung Ho Kang, the crown jewel of transplants, is an .800 OPS anchor in the Pittsburgh Pirates' order. Seattle's Dae-Ho Lee flashed some power this season, with 14 home runs in 104 games. Baltimore's Hyun Soo Kim hit .302 without a lot of pop, and Byung Ho Park batted .191 in 62 games with Minnesota before a demotion to the minors and season-ending wrist surgery in August. That was hardly what the Twins had in mind when they signed him to a four-year, $12.85 million contract a year ago.

So who will be next on the list? The primary name on MLB's Korea radar has California roots, an outsized personality and enough of a mystery factor to suggest he could be a wild card in this winter's free-agent market.

His name is Eric Thames, and Toronto fans might recall him as a platoon outfielder with the Blue Jays in 2011 and 2012. After drifting from Seattle to Houston to the NC Dinos in the Korean Baseball Organization, he has lured a procession of scouts to the city of Changwon, on Korea's southeastern coast. The San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays are among the clubs that have followed Thames in Korea and expressed varying degrees of interest in him, sources said.

Thames, 30, has spent the past three years putting up cartoon numbers that bring to mind the success enjoyed by Tuffy Rhodes and Wladimir Balentien in Japan. In 2015, Thames won the MVP award and a Gold Glove at first base, became the first KBO player to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in a season, logged a .391/.497/.790 slash line and became the first player in Korean baseball to hit for the cycle twice in the same season.

This year, Thames regressed slightly, but he still hit 40 homers and logged an OPS of 1.101 for the Dinos, who lost to the Doosan Bears in the KBO final, known as the Korean Series.

If the Padres were aiming for no buzz with their new uniforms, they sure nailed it

Nice uniforms, Padres. In other news, this year they'll be serving porridge and raw cauliflower at Petco Park.

MLB Owners: Lockout possible if new CBA can't be reached

Ken Rosenthal reports the Union and the league are at an impasse on several matters. One of those matters is compensation for free agents. The owners agreed to completely ditch the idea of draft pick compensation for leaving free agents but only if an international draft is instituted. The Union is not behind the idea of such a draft.

The other issues are related to Luxury Tax and the Joint Drug Agreement.

I wonder how costly a lockout could be considering the somewhat 'malaise' the MLB is in. (How much of a malaise it is in, is dependent on your opinion on how good MLB is doing in terms of fan interest from millennials)

negotiating tactic. I dont expect a lockout. Owners and the Union still have 1994 fresh in their minds.

Gleybar Torres is kicking ass. Fun to see our former players doing well even if they are with another club. Yanks are gonna be awesome soon.
Cubs/Yanks world series is going to be dope.

I hope the union sticks to its guns and rejects an international draft.

Mike Petriello writes article suggesting Cubs consider trading Schwarber for elite pitching. Twitter melts down, Cub fans saying Schwarber is a 50 HR guy they wouldn't trade for Trout.

I don't believe Schwarber is going to be able to play the field so if they can get an elite pitcher back that seems like a no brainer.

He will be ok in LF. I would entertain trading him for an elite player but it would take A LOT for the Cubs to consider trading him. They were super high on him, calling him untouchable, and that was before his performance in the World Series.

this again?

schwarber's defensive issues are massively overstated because he's fat and had a few particularly goofy looking plays in the NLCS last season. he was okay in left field last year, both statistically and to the naked eye.. is his value going to be hurt by some level of below average defense? yes, but he's not close to the disaster people like to say he is. it is easy to imagine his bat making up for his below average defense in a big way.

theo's entire strategy since joining the cubs has been to build around positional players and avoid betting on young pitchers to stay healthy/good. if they're going to trade schwarber for a pitcher, it would have to be an exceptional value. i just don't see it.

That deal is nuts. The secondary pieces are almost as interesting as the main cogs. Dipoto getting as much value as he could for a guy they should have traded 2 years ago

I don't really get this trade.

His below average defense was before his knee exploded which robbed him of his ability to continue to catch which mitigates a lot of his value as a guy you can "hide" behind the plate leaving him really only being able to play left.

It's a very Jerry DiPoto move. They get a guy who they feel fills a potential immediate need (leadoff hitter/starting short stop) as well as add future depth in Curtis and Haniger. In return they give up two extremely flawed players that were over valued by the previous regime.

I like it! Buy low on the upside for Walker + control on Marte, trade Segura before he returns back to Earth. Losing Haniger hurts, but the logjam has to be freed up somehow.

he was never going to be a catcher. his defense sucked there. they were basically just doing their due diligence in 2015 by putting him behind the plate every once in a while to see how he was. he was always going to be a left fielder. the injury doesn't change his outlook, other than him missing a year of development.

Interesting trade. Segura / Walker will probably end up being a wash in terms of value and it will come down to the secondary pieces. Haniger looks interesting, may be a good one.

Also the dbacks rotation might be really good if everyone bounces back and pitches to their potential.

Yeah, the trade for me comes down to how Hangier turns out. Could be a good value pickup.

Dellin Betances will pitch for the DR in the WBC.

Dallas Kuechel and Brian Dozier eant to olay for USA.

New rule for the WBC will allow teams to have a list of 10 pitchers additional to the active 28 man roster. These pitchers can be added in later rounds and pitch for teams. For example. Kershaw can be on the list and not pitch for the US until the finals, when he's added to the active roster.
