The Rangers, trying to solve that power void, tried to pull off a blockbuster deal for Atlanta Braves outfielder Justin Upton before the July 31 trade deadline. The Rangers offered starter Matt Garza, All-Star closer Joe Nathan and outfielder David Murphy, but they were rejected, two high-ranking club officials told USA TODAY Sports. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were unauthorized to publicly talk about personnel decisions.

At least they tried.

Here's the thing: It's not just the offense. Derek Holland has been a mess this month. Over his last 10 starts, Matt Garza has allowed four or more earned runs seven times. The biggest fears of the Rangers' front office that was pressured by ownership to deal for Garza are proving true: He's nothing close to a frontline starter, and because they can't get draft-pick compensation for him, they're going to rue trading starter C.J. Edwards, whom evaluators absolutely love.

I said the trade reeked of desperation when it happened. Looks like that may have been the case.

They tried to get Andrelton Simmons last offseason without even offering Profar, which was even more ridiculous. Deal has at least some logic behind it, though Rangers weren't offering enough.

Lol, no way the Rangers would even think about giving up Profar for a guy like Simmons.

Sounds so dire, until you realize there is one week left.

Next year might be a good year for CC to take off and get that Tommy John surgery that he probably needs.

Whatever. He'd be out 8 weeks if it was the start of the season.

I'm not mocking you for posting it. Just the BREAKING NEWS SABATHIA OUT FOR THE SEASON!!

They should have just hid the injury and claimed his final start scratched due to innnnnndddiiiggesssstionnnnnnn.

We have a winner in the Yahoo NEOGAF Baseball League.

icecream thread beat Cuban Jailbait in the final. Defending champ Benny the Jet took the bronze.

Good season with lots of competative battles all year. GAF knows baseball.

What they were supposedly going to do was trade Mike Olt to the Braves for Simmons and then flip Simmons to the Diamondbacks for Justin Upton since the D'Backs were asking for either Andrus or Profar. D'Backs ended up getting Didi Gregorius in a separate deal.

No Bethancourt :(

Jason playing CF and batting leadoff even with Schafer in the lineup is neat though.

But then again Schafer in the lineup :(

All I'm worried about with Machado is him coming back and being the player he was. The Orioles weren't making a post season run this year anyway.
