MMA-GAF |OT5| Father Time Is Undefeated

You'll never be able to enjoy anything. Whatever cool thing comes up, there'll always be fanboys to ruin it. Also, don't ever visit reddit.

I'm on reddit and various other mma boards quite a bit and Shogun is the only fighter I've experienced this level of circlejerkism over. To the point where even trying to compliment him in some ways is frowned upon.

GSP and Machida hvae a lot of fans on reddit, for sure, but in my collective experience in all mma forums, it's all about Shogun nut huggers.

There may be some pretty big gsp and machida nut huggers (myself included) but I don't see them making delusional excuses for EVERY SINGLE loss.

Machida fans are amongst the worse cheerleaders in the sport and think he's Ryu from Street Fighter and forgetting he drinks his own piss.

115-125# dudes scrapping in oversized cages is horrible for the sport.

http://www.mmafighting.com/2014/8/24/6055991/ufc-178-will-be-like-no-ufc-show-in-history

In looking at a marketability quotient, using U.S. Google search interest in the names over the past year, which, historically correlates extremely well to not just public interest but importantly, to eventual pay-per-view buys, UFC 178 is different from any show to date.

McGregor vs. Poirier and Alvarez vs. Cerrone both score 12s. Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero is a 10. Cat Zingano vs. Amanda Nunes is a nine. Both Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki and Johnson vs. Cariaso score fives. It is unheard of in UFC history to have a television undercard fight (Cruz vs. Mizugaki right now is scheduled for the FS 1 prelims, not the pay-per-view), to have equal interest in the pay-per-view main event.

For a comparison, the T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao main event of UFC 177, which is not likely to do strong pay-per-view business, is a 21. Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida, the last pay-per-view main event, and the most successful headline match this year, was a 99. The UFC 168 double headliner saw Weidman vs. Anderson Silva score a 250 and Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate score a 300. And that's why that show topped 1 million buys.

“MMA is not really a true sport, because in a true sport the people that win with game plans, regardless if it’s a lay and pray win or a wall and stall win, they still get acknowledged. In soccer, soccer games are 1-0. They go an hour, or an hour and a half with no scoring and it's 1-0, or 0-0, or a draw. And guess what, people are still there and people respect it. In MMA, if you're boring they don’t like you. True sports all that matters is the result, not how you win. The result is all that matters in true sports, that’s it. MMA is entertainment, sports entertainment, it’s like World Wrestling, that’s it.” - King Mo

In football, if the game ends 0 - 0, they don't give the win to the team with more corner kicks. Maybe that's a reason.

I think that's the dagger, Viobod. Good playoff run. Let's try to stay healthy next year and make the ECF.

edit: I spoke too soon, our ball, down 1, 16.2 left, Della Donne lays it in! Now we just need to play defense for 8 seconds.

King Mo would have a great point, if he wasn't just wrong. People ignore good teams all the time in "real" sports. Christ, the Spurs are still called boring and get low ratings despite being an incredibly entertaining team, all because they were dull a decade ago for a couple of seasons.

You kind of derailed your point with the Spurs example.

IMO, they should bring more objectivity to the sport. Unless there's a knockout, tko or submission, the fight should be declared a draw. In which case, they go to a sudden death round, like penalty kicks in soccer. The fighers would trade punches lick for lick. Whoever gets knocked out first loses.

They still win, but they don't necessarily get the national exposure, merchandise, and ratings. The players don't have to care about those things in the NBA, where in the UFC there are no teams to take that concern on their shoulders. It still matters to the Spurs as a whole, just as it matters to somebody like Jim Miller that he was able to win half a dozen in a row with no title shot a few years back.

I bet all of you know regret not putting enough money into Bonnars other project:

I'm actually fine with things like this, MMA needs feeder leagues / early retirement leagues.
It's like european soccer guys going over to the US once they are close to being dead.
Or the CFL I guess.

is it really a death round if nobody dies? give each one a revolver.

On a serious note though, they could award the victory to whoever spent most time closer to the center of the cage or something.
