Moneyhatted temporary exclusives aside, Sony's first-party studio output has never been worse in their 30 year history.

Tlou2 and Tsushima the same year as PS5 even.
imagine if PlayStation acted like Xbox or Nintendo and held those for their next gen (or at least cross-gen at launch ala Twilight Princess/Breath of the Wild) instead of relying on backwards compatibility until they eventually ported them later

would people be saying the same thing about this gen if PS5 had TLOU2 and GoT at launch?

OK, so you prefer PS5 to PS4. PS4 had Uncharted 4, Last of US 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, and God of War as untouchable 1st party games. It had a lot more than this, but all of these are head and shoulders above everything Sony has done so far on PS5. Presumably, if you like Playstation, you like these games, and I don't see how it can be argued that PS5 has anything to answer with against them. Worst generation.
What's the point comparing PS5 now with the whole PS4 lineup. It's like comparing PS4 in 2016 with the whole PS3 library and saying "we only have Uncharted 4 but on PS3 we had U1, U2, U3 and TLOU".
In the second half of PS5 we will get new IPs from Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Housemarque and Bend. Then we can compare PS5 with PS4 with their GOW2018, Spider-Man2018, Tsushima2020 and TLOU2020.

It's hard to say that this is the worst generation without waiting for it to end, Sony has a habit of delivering very good games at the end of generations.

Currently, there are games that I liked and are very good, such as Astro Bot, Returnal, Sackboy, Ratchet & Clank, etc. But at the same time, there are a lot of unnecessary remasters/remakes of games from the previous generation, which don't add anything. There are also sequels with woke touches and inferior to the previous game (such as GoW Ragnarok and Spiderman 2). And there was Concord, which needs no comment.

Luckily, Sony has very good partnerships to deliver games like SH 2 Remake or FF7 Rebirth, because if it were to depend only on its first-party studios, it would be complicated.

I'm happy with my PS5 but I'm not thrilled with this generation's output. Nor am I a fan of Sony's direction the past few years. Feels to me like they got blinded by greed and hoodwinked by people pushing an agenda. Just one guy's opinion.

by this point in the ps4 generation, we were far better off

Giving them the benefit of the doubt. If it didn't, then they've got even less excuse for lack of output.
Games just take longer to make. 6 year development times is the standard now. A huge chunk of PlayStation Studios released games in 2018 - 2020 on the PS4.

You can't refute the math.

Apart from 3rd party titles with paid 1-year-ish exclusivity (like SH2 and FFVII: Rebirth), the only titles we saw from Sony this year were Helldivers II, Astrobot and... LEGO Horizon (kek), plus a bunch of needless remasters like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Until Dawn and TLOU Part II and (potentially) incoming announcement of a native PS5 version of Days Gone. Concord as well, but it's already dead so it's not worth even talking about.

In the meantime, this console generation is already halfway done, so the promises of big games and substantial output become even less trustworthy. Apart from Ghost of Yotei, ND's new sci-fi game and whatever SSM is working on, will there be anything of actual substance until PS6 arrives?
It's the perfect moment to dig through our backlogs and then coincidentally the worst time to get your hands on a PS5 Pro. They released it without any new exclusive showcase games, that's weird.

But yeah, I totally agree with you here.

It's telling that the 30 year celebration lists have been 75% third party and the majority of the first party games on the lists was 20+ years ago. Modern Sony isn't a patch on ps1 and ps2 era Sony. Modern sony is creatively moribund. The last new IP was Returnal four years ago.

What about stellar blade and rise of the Ronin? While those are developer by other studios, those still are published by Sony and Sony helped those studios.

Gow2018, HZD, Spider-Man, Tsushima, Tlou2 all released in the second half of the generation. Tlou2 and Tsushima the same year as PS5 even.
Hzd, gt7 and uncharted 4 had released by this time last Gen.

Gow and Spider-Man will release in the 5th year like GoT2 which looks more of the same.

We also knew every single of those games coming out by now. Tlou2, days gone, GoT were all announced by this time this generation. Sony’s output for the rest of the Gen is shrouded in mystery after many cancellations and delays. Can’t expect people not to think the worst if Sony themselves aren’t willing to show them off.,

The level of demand with Sony is ridiculous, it is the company with the most nominations in the goty, the only console where you can play all the goty candidates, the one that has released the best rated game of the year and yet you still have to read meaningless threads like this one.

Removing games like Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, FF7 Rebirth, Granblue, Silent Hill 2, etc... is also absurd, Sony knows that first-party games take a long time to produce and pays or collaborates with other companies to increase the catalog and have more games arrive.

During ps1, ps2 times Sony didn't Even developed Many first party games, it was the third party moneyhatted games that Made the consoles so successful.

PS1 soared exactly because Sony was welcoming 3rd party devs with open arms, open CD format and way lower cut. Almost all legendary PS1/PS2 titles were developed and even published by someone else, not Sony. But that doesn't fit the narrative.

Sony has made more internally developed games since 2020 than they had made during the PS1 and PS2 generations combined and bigger games to boot.

The vast majority of games on PS1 were not developed internally and that remained true of the PS2 generation as well, although Sony had started to invest in 1st party development during the PS2 generation.

The reality as many others have stated is that games simply take longer to develop, but somehow only Sony gets held to this standard.

What has CDPR made this generation? A DLC and a next gen patch.

Please tell me what major development studios are out there developing more titles than Sony studios and bigger titles.

What a dog shit thread this is.

I wont say that sony games are bad. You can probably say they are objectively good. But it's a type of game i couldnt care less about. Outside of returnal i dont think they made a game in the last 10 years that i'd play. Unless you count bloodborne

"the only titles we had were Helldivers II, Astrobot & Lego Horizon"...

The reality is video game development costs & time has increased like 10x.. it's be expected to have a 1-2 years in a generation where it's a little 'light'.
My thoughts exactly. And I don't get the complaints, we are living in a wild renaissance of indie gems being released on a regular basis. Not to mention the great multiplatform games that released this year.

I mean, I only recently got myself a PS5 and I am figuring out what amazing game to play first. I feel spoiled.

They’re in a mess of their own making so it’s hard to feel sorry for them.

I loved Sony’s PS3 and a lot of the PS4 output so it sucks for me, but there’s other games and systems out there.

They've just beaten their stock price records despite the shitty yen and home economy and posted biggest gaming net profit ever also making more money in a quarter than Nintendo earned in a full FY.

If this is a mess to you, than Xbox is not only dead, it's basically vaporized.

GT7?
You mean GT Sport? Wouldn't this have almost exact equals in HFW and GT7 already with the only one missing being Uncharted 5? We got Ragnarok and a new Spiderman already this gen too.

Thank god I love stock markets and not video games.

I don’t want expensive exclusives just good ones would do.

They seemed to have done a better job of that on PS3 without a record stock price.
I was typing about how the industry changed in general and then understood that it doesn't make any sense to engage in this discussion.

Free money on Sony's hand is what made Project Eve into Stellar Blade, a good AAA game that was not a guaranteed success for all parties involved. Especially since it's Shuft Up's first big title. To moneyhat correctly you need deep pockets. To scope the games you need deep pockets. To maintain long development cycles and don't rush games (Indiana was rushed af) you need deep pockets.

Money of course doesn't mean quality, but boy the financial stability helps a ton and you can bet on games like Rise of Ronin or Helldivers 2, or Stellar Blade more freely without breaking the bank.

The length of time it's taking for AAA games to be made is causing problems for both Sony and MS, Sony can't go out and buy mega publishers to help with their output.

Their live service initiatives set them back this entire generation. I'm expecting / hoping the back half to be pretty epic.
Exactly, people don’t realize how big concord was really supposed to be (Star Wars esque)

They really bet half the house on that game, they’ll be fine ofc but that franchise was supposed to carry them through this gen and the next

In prior generations, we got multiple games at the scale of Astrobot and Helldivers in the same year. Plus Sony published their own indie gems back then too.

In 2011 alone:
- Uncharted 3
- Resistance 3
- Infamous 2
- Motorstorm Apocalypse
- Killzone 3
- LittleBigPlanet 2
- Pixeljunk Shooter 2
(this is not a complete list)

And that would be a stupid solution. What Sony has been doing is what they have always done, contracting external developers to make first-party games for them.
Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Until Dawn, Lego Horizon Adventures (partially), Convallaria, Lost Soul Aside, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, that's exactly why they've been generally good as a publisher the past year and for the foreseeable future.

Sony never published indie games and Pixeljunk is not first-party (Japanese games not published by SCE in Japan).

But listed games are all sequels with heavy asset/code reuse and in case of some games quite wonky production cycles (U3, KZ3, Motorstorm).

OK, then where's the equivalent of Uncharted 1, Killzone 2, and Motorstorm 1 on the PS5? It's not much of a counterargument that entire trilogies were completed at this point in the cycle.

2011 was five years into PS3 gen with way shorter and easier dev cycles.

2025 will bring us new Ghost and Death Stranding even excluding the potential reveals and GTA VI.

AstroBot would be a great side dish if they had a good "real" holiday AAA release. Troubling thing is all the best first party stuff to be excited for on the platform isn't even announced. It's just stuff we all assume is sure to come. We're getting closer and closer to Naughty Dog just skipping this gen altogether. At best we're looking at cross gen. PS5 release is months before PS6 launch type of deal. Whatever they've had Bend cooking is going to hold a lot of weight. At least in the online discourse. God forbid it's some GaaSy shit that sounded like a good idea in 2017. When Sony defecated that gritty, lurid slop on the gaming community in autumn it really put their backs against the wall in that online discourse space. That was the big launch title for Pro. The next big release needs to knock it out of the park to get them out of the lolcow chair.

The miscalculation is hugely concerning.
