Moneyhatted temporary exclusives aside, Sony's first-party studio output has never been worse in their 30 year history.

I don't think anything is worse than Nov-2006 to Apr-2008 from the PS3 era, you only got to play Uncharted DF, Resistance FOM and MotorStorm, everything else was better looking on X360, so you couldn't even rely on third party games 🤷‍♂️

There is definitely truth to this. Sony isnt the only one. Ubisoft, Microsoft, EA and Activision have also been underwhelming at best.

The problem is that Sony was absolutely amazing last gen. Especially if you like action adventure games. So by their own lofty expectations, they have underdelivered. And being one of the two publishers who sold us a $500 console, they deserved a lot more criticism than third party ones.

Their GOTY track record was insane last gen. Even if they didnt win the VGA one year, they would clean up the awards elsewhere. There was a GOTY tracker website that tracked GOTYs from all critics and users, and Sony topped in
2020- TLOU2
2019 - Death Stranding
2018 - GOW
2017- Lost to Zelda but HFW was a runner up
2016- Uncharted 4
2015- Witcher 3 won but Blooodborne was second runner up after Fallout 4
2013- TLOU1

Thats just an insane level of quality that they simply havent been able to replicate since.
I think that's a fair take, it's everyone, but platform holders should have more criticism.

What I don't agree with are 3rd party exclusives not counting for reasons. If they worked with the third party to produce it or just funded it, it doesn't matter, and is Sony actively trying to produce greater value by recognizing that first party isn't enough currently.

I think general gaming industry trend is moving downwards with quality longer we are since PS3/X360 era. There was pretty much reason to be excited all the time (outside of summer), nowadays such feeling is almost non-existent. Well lets say without Cyberpunk and Stalker this gen would be waste (for me), but I can easily replays old classic, either on XSX or Xenia, RPCS3 and they are still good. Most games I played this gen was either MP games or single player games, I have no desire in replaying outside of few. And based on statistic, I actually play for longer, for some reason. So no I am not "sick of gaming", I just think the quality is lacking. This is industry wide problem, so no reason to single-out Sony.
I think this is more indicative of your taste being to narrow. To not include elden ring and bg3 says it all really. It’s not the industry, it’s you.

Damn you are correct about Elden Ring, BG3 that's for sure, its 2am here. However even with your post just 4 games in total, not sure if that's a winning argument. But you do you.

Also "no u" is excellent post for discussion, greatly appreciate it

Maybe I'm reading the OP wrong but didn't he say first party games? As in made by Sony. I'm only seeing one there that counts under that.

As for OP, I wouldn't say the quality wasn't as good as it used to be, but definitely the quantity. Sony's first party use to have a massive amount of different games, but as game development gets more expensive, you can't really have that. Even Nintendo had to admit this to investors earlier this year.
What does it matter if its a 1st party game by Sony or if its a Sony funded game made for Playstation like pretty much most of the PS1 and PS2 library was? Xdev that is a 1st party Sony studio worked on Stellar Blade, and the OP dismissed it as a valid game cuz for some reason only games from 1st party studios count as Playstation output. What im pointing out is that Playstation output is what the Playstation team, makes available for Playstation players. And ALL of the nominees in this year TGA can only be played on a PS5. So to me it seems whatever Playstation is doing, its giving its players what matters. Games to play.

I don’t agree. People have short term memories. Sit down and look at the output year to year to year. It’s no less than other bad years and no better than other great years. Sony is pretty dang consistent. Nintendo also, hence why they’re both still strong and industry leaders. Just recognize when games aren’t for you, and be patient for when they are.

Elden Ring did nothing for me and im a souls fan. Open world ubisoft souls is not my thing sorry. The whole point of souls to me is the interconnected metroidvania design with carefully crafted boss encounters. Not this free for all. 350 bosses. Yay? BB had less than 10 and they were far more memorable.

BG3 is turn based. Instant turn off. Get fucked and make a real video game with an actual combat system. Not to mention isometric ps1 era world design. Great for fans of CRPGs but fans of WRPGs had to suffer through Dragon Age 4, Starfield and Cyberpunk this gen and I know you liked Cybperunk but it was such a huge downgrade from Witcher 3, I wanted to cry.

But ok, they were a commercial and critical hit but if you dont like those genres then you're fucked this gen? Thats not what gaming is about.

We have seen a massive drop off in FPS quality. The last great single player shooter campaign was in 2016 when Titanfall came out.
We have seen a massive drop off in FPS multiplayer. Everything is GaaS nowadays. Again, BF1 was the last MP shooter i really enjoyed in 2016.
WRPGs like i said earlier, mostly trash or mediocre since Witcher 3 in 2015.
Action Adventure Games peaked with RDR2 and GOW in 2018 and while we still had great games until 2020, nothing this gen has truly topped them.

These are your most popular genres. I am glad CRPGs like BG3 can find success in todays world, and souls went from niche to mainstream, but thats not what carried gaming and if you are a fan of those genres, you have seen some of the leanest 4 years in the industry.

Bungie dead. Bioware dead. DICE dead. CD Project, ND, Crystal Dynamics, MIA since 2020. Rockstar since 2018. Kojima since 2019. And i am supposed to think gaming is still great???

I said this 2 years ago.
Everyone said they ain't announcing games 2 years before release anymore and there's loads being worked on, wait till next year.
Then again, and again this year.
They have gone half the generation with what we would normally call Launch & First Wave games.
They launched the PS5, set it to autopilot with what was already in production back in 2018 and forgot to switch it off despite having nothing in the tank.
In fact the only time they've looked over is to see what haven't ported yet to PC yet while being proud that they got GOW to go from 20mil to 21.2mill with all their efforts.

Why? Sony always had plenty of those.

Guess what...only 3 games are from Sony. Didn't we count these as PS2 games back then? Weren't they timed exclusives as well?

This was an amazing year for Playstation. It's literally the only platform where you can play all GOTY nominees, and since the PS5 released between crossgen and new gen games, their studios actually released a lot more content during the PS5's first 4 years than PS4's first 4 years:

  • Astro's Playroom (2020)
  • Demon's Souls (2020)
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020)
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure (2020)
  • Returnal (2021)
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021)
  • Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut (2021)
  • Death Stranding Director's Cut (2021)
  • Horizon Forbidden West (2022)
  • Gran Turismo 7 (2022)
  • God of War Ragnarök (2022)
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023)
  • Horizon Call of the Mountain (2023)
  • Helldivers 2 (2023)
  • The Last of Us Part I (2022)
  • The Last of Us Part II: Remastered (2024)
  • Astro Bot (2024)
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered (2024)
  • Lego Horizon Adventures (2024)
3rd party timed exclusives:
  • Godfall (2020)
  • Deathloop (2021)
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade (2021)
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo (2022)
  • Forspoken (2022)
  • Final Fantasy XVI (2023)
  • Stellar Blade (2023)
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024)
  • Rise of the Ronin (2024)
I'm sure i'm missing some. You got new IP's, sequels, remakes, remasters...from all genres etc...

Sounds like a step up to me for 4 years. Compare this with PS4. Pay attention to a pandemic, costs of development rising, and development times increasing and still the first 4 years for PS5 were stronger than the first 4 years of PS4. At this point you had Uncharted 4, Bloodborne and...Driveclub (released in a terrible state, servered fried, most good things of the game released months after, including rain), the most boring Killzone in history, the worst Infamous, and...Knack. If during the PS4 era someone told you Sony would get another main FF title as an exclusive i don't think anyone would believe, after they lost those in the PS2 era.

That and Sony not announcing games years in advance makes it seem like they have less.

This talking point has been talked about so much, not only is it tiring but just moving goalposts. We have never mentioned this type of thing in the past when in came from first and second party. No one in the PS3 generation was saying how great game like the resistance trilogy or heavy rain were, but what about Sonys actual first party. People would just talk about what systems had which exclusives. So I don't see why it matters who made what actual game. Just where can you play them. Not saying this needs to be everyone's top 5 but look at the game awards GoTY list.

Balatro - Game is everywhere
FF7 rebirth - you can only play this on PS5
Astrobot - you can only play this on PS5
Helldivers 2 - PS5 console exclusive
Wu Kong - PS5 console exclusive ( I get this wasn't really Sonys doing though)

This also doesn't even include other solid outing games Sony has this year that THEY published in Rise of the Ronin and Stellar blade. This is not to say I think they've had some unreal year, but the talking point of their first party is just getting old. I feel like they EASILY had a better year than Nintendo and MS combined and these threads never seem to pop up about them.

So having one of their three most successful first-party releases of all time (Helldivers II) and the highest-rated game of the year (Astro Bot) - surpassing Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Metaphor - is really the worst PlayStation has been at in their history?

Some of you must really live in a parallel dimension or something.

The people who boast about Playstation's sales figures tend to not have that opinion when talking about games like Madden or Call of Duty, etc.

Sony's games are financially and critically successful.

That you would compare them to Madden and CoD says a lot about where your heads at.

I don't know how console wars turned into something so clearly delusional.

People go gaga in here over sony's sales numbers like it means anything about the quality of game. It's a super weak year for GOTY in general and Sony isn't impressing me with Astro Bot and Helldivers, I'm sorry. I've owned every ps console since the first.

Game quality is subjective, but what is objective is that Sony has had a great year for first party sales without having to rely on major established IP. What's also true is Sony has one of their highest rated games in their history in Astro Bot.

Astro Bot would be a contender in pretty much any given year, unless you can find a year for me that had more than 5 94s or higher...

By every objective measure, Sony is having raging success. I think they'll do fine without the "delirium trigger" vote.

Early PS3 and PS4 were really bad but Sony has been disappointing this entire gen. With a few exceptions like Astro Bot, Returnal, and Helldivers, almost everything they release are either remasters or the same 3rd party open world game with different skins.

We're not even early PS5 anymore. It's year 4. The PRO is out! PS4 crushes PS5 at this point in the cycle. PS4 has all of PS5's best games even.

I certainly don't look at metacritic as a be all end all. Astro Bot being a cutesy little platformer shouldn't be that high. It's kind of criminal that it shares the same score as an actual great game that embodied what Sony is actually all about - Metal Gear Solid.

Are you serious? How game’s artstyle being cute has to do with the game not deserving the praise? The game is getting praised because it fun to play which what game should be.

Also are games not allowed to have “cute” artstyle?

Subjective but I think this total nonsense. What great first party games were out by Sony by end of 2017? Uncharted 4, Horizon, Infamous second son and KZ. Might be forgetting some, and while I liked those games, that comes down to basically 1 AAA game a year, 3 of which are already established IP as well. According to OP, games like Bloodborne, R&C, LBP 3 and Until Dawn don't count as they were second party when they released.

Idk, I mentioned earlier that people need to stop focusing first/second party. If you just go by the games I think early to mid PS4 was better but it's not like far and away better.

Disney approached Sony about making SM. Sony hired Insomniac to do it, while they published it. So it's first party. ( I think)

You call it "total nonsense" and then list a series of bangers all by yourself. No PS5 exclusive stands up to Uncharted 4.

And I agree with you about the "first/second" thing. Second isn't real. Anything Sony publishes is first party.

The game doesn't deserve the praise because that's all it is, a cutesy little platformer. There's nothing new or innovative.

It's the perfect short and casual game for a reviewer to turn on and enjoy for a few hours, however. It's the kind of game I'd want Sony to make if I wanted them to be like Nintendo I guess...

I disagree…already own 20 games I very much enjoy. Sorry your types haven’t arrived yet, I feel that way about Nintendo most of the time. They have droughts for years. Don’t confuse your tastes always lining up with others. Some people love games many others can’t stand, but continue to wait for their types to land.
Be patient they’ll come, not like the competition is bringing anything great either. I own lots of systems where I only own a handful of games, because my type of games/genres aren’t represented well. Also people quickly forget CO-VID impacted releases, development, structure, etc…

Yep, just like M&L Brothership, TLOZ Echoes of Wisdom, Paper Mario TTYD, SMRPG, Pikmin 4 and Bayonetta Origins aren't first-party games either.
Nintendo does basically most of the same things Sony does and people don't bat an eye for some reason.

Like when you look at it with a close eye.. Nintendo has fuelled the Switch through consistent remasters and remakes, but this fact will remain untalked about until Microsoft releases their handheld and gets a reason to get people going about it.

I don't even hate remasters or remakes either, they are more than ok in my book, but at least be consistent about how you approach them.

Them offering an even more expensive console with the covert intention to enslave us digitally will never cease to impress me in terms of impudence.

Because these corporations care so much about us even if we have given them thousands of dollars

But I didn't include the PS5 games. If we just go by Sony first party, I feel like GT7 , Ragnarok, Returnal, R&C rift apart, forbidden West and spider man 2 are probably better than the PS4 list. I would agree if we go by just all games, I would probably take PS4. The power of Bloodborne baby!

Also my point is I think people don't really remember some of the down times and just remember playing great games. Again, sonys first party had not much to note between second son and uncharted 4. Pretty long gap saved by second party, exclusivity deals and what not
