I'll probably get this game very soon (got a birthday coming up in ten days... ;)). I played lots of MH3 on the original Wii, reached about HR 100-110 (IIRC), killed Alatreon a bunch of times etc. so I know the original game pretty well. I haven't played ever since they closed the servers though.

Anything I should know, tips and stuff, before starting this one? Will I have to "unlearn" anything? I'll get the Wii U version.

I'm trying to set up some 4 player local multiplayer with some friends and I've got a question: Can I set up 2 WiiUs and 2 3DS' and have them all play together or is that a no go?
The Wii U version can host up to 3 other 3DS players in local multiplayer, or it can go online with up to 3 other Wii U players in online multiplayer, but the Wii U version can't be a local multiplayer guest or play online and local at the same time.

It'd help to have 1 more 3DS or 2 more Wii Us.

The best part about that flowchart is that while its intending to be taken humorously it's actually as far as I can tell damn decent advice and is basically how I try to play.

Sometimes you just get in the zone of pretending its another weapon and sit there and slash slash slash though. I try to avoid it but if it works on a monster, it works.

Something feels so off about this one. I've been playing since the psp ones and the one one ps2. I like it, also got my friend to start playing and now he understands why me and my brother love it so much. He also mentioned that to the fans this is considered the worst one is that true?

I've only ever heard this particular opinion expressed by die hard Sony fans myself who have an axe to grind.

The original Tri is considered the worst by most fans. The original Tri had almost no content (half the weapons cut, 19 large monsters, fewer areas, etc) but this one has almost 3 times the amount of stuff and is considered the best gen 3 game by far.

Well, put some decent time into this and having a great time. I checked around and think I answers my questions correctly, but just to be safe: The tainted meat that causes paralyze does not work like a trap, in that you can not tranq bomb the monster and capture it after it eats the meat? Had to hunt the g jaggi and capture him in my last quest and they gave me the meat to start, but ended up using normal trap anyway. Although if you can use the meat, that seems like it would be easier than the normal trap.

At this point I'm decked out in Jaggi gear, lv3 armor pieces and Jaggi dual blades, guess that means it's time to move on to the next monster until I'm wearing him.

A monster eating tainted meat becomes paralyzed for free hits. Though it looks a lot like being caught in a shock trap, it's not actually capturable in that state. You absolutely need to catch it in a shock trap or pitfall trap. And if you happen to run out of traps on a capture quest, you're better off abandoning the quest from the menu and trying again.

That's a great start, though I'd advise against forging too many low rank armors. Unlike weapons that can be upgraded to get more and more powerful, armor winds up becoming obsolete as pieces with better skills turn up. Just keep putting Armor Spheres into Jaggi armor for awhile and you'll be fine.

Actually jaggi armor can see you through to the end of low rank. Basically just go with the armor you have now until you can't win anymore but always upgrade weapons.

You can if you know what youre doing, if you are new to the game I recommend to getting different amours like Rath.

OK, I've just completed my first urgent quest, which was killing those yellow salamander type enemies, and while I'm enjoying the game I'm still unsure what weapon I'd like to use. I think I'm torn between Gunlance, Bow, and Hunting Horn, but I'm not sure which I'd sooner stick with. Gunlance seems a bit too slow for my liking, but I'm enjoying the shell use during combos, bow is fun but my shots keep flying over enemies like Jaggi, and horn is fun but I don't really get how I should be using it. I assume I'm supposed to play the song as a combo/attack sequence rather than stay off to the sides and play the song, right?
Do other Gunlances become quicker to use at all, or is there anyway I can speed myself up when using them?

I think Wroggi is even better for learning the ropes.

1. There's a lot of poison in low rank.
2. You look like a cowboy/cowgirl.
3. Halving the amount of time you have to sharpen is very nifty.

Gunlance is a awesome, defensive and a power-house but fast it is not, lol. Bow takes some getting used to to get good with it and it's worth saying that they actually have trouble with the smaller monsters, lol. I don't play HH and I find it boring so someone else will have to help you there

Also, you haven't actually fought a big monster yet so I would wait till you do to get a better feel for the weapons.

Right, OK then. My only problem with Gunlance is that I keep holding the control stick towards the enemy when I attack them, and end up doing the up thrust instead.

Thanks for the advice all, I'll hold off for a bit on armor then. I have two sets of dual blades now that are base power 154, but some of the upgrade materials for both I have never heard of, so guessing it's time to check out this new forest area.

Yeah, that takes getting used to. Practice makes perfect is the only advice I can give. Using the X+A move will get kinda around this but you don't get many good strings that way. It can however, get you into block pretty fast if your opening wasn't that good.

Just try a few until one clicks with your personal play style. I used sword and shield for the longest time on Tri, added in some Hammer in this one and have now moved on to Dual Blades, which I absolutely adore :D. I haven't touched any of the others apart from having a bash at the first three Arena quests where I was forced to do so. In fact that's how I got turned on to the Dual Blades. So having a go at the Arena might be worth your consideration. Be aware though that you will probably find the monsters unfamiliar and tougher than those you are used to which is pretty challenging with a new weapon you have not used before. It's a good way of being forced to try a new weapon though if you tend to stick to what you're used to like me. Otherwise just pick a weapon, go into Moga Woods and play :).

I recently got to the High Rank Quests and have found to my dismay that the effectively complete armor set for the Low Rank Quests are now pretty much worthless, save for one or two :(. I can now understand why I see posters saying things like "you can get through the low rank quests with just jaggi armor". I'm not sure I'll bother doing all that again if I ever re-play it or get to my next Mon Hun. Still I enjoyed myself getting all the parts needed to craft the Low Rank Armor complete set so I'm not complaining.

How do I download DLC? Is it in-game? Do I have to go through a specific part of the game until I'm able to?

It's in the main menu before you actually go into the game in the list of:

New Game
Continue
Options
Data Transfer
DLC

I believe you speak to your felyne in your Moga Village hut if you wish to play any of them whilst in-game but I haven't got to that yet.

You can also do pretty much all of High Rank using Jaggi/Wroggi armor as long as you upgrade it fully. I'm still a newbie and the only reason I make new armor is because it looks bad ass until I got to the village Ivory Lagi fight, when I was glad I found the Zinogre armor so stylish.

I feel like such a slacker.

Still gotta finish that item combination award (Slickaxe farming!) and the rightmost pair of crown size awards before I'll have the bottom lines filled.

Made a pair of Snow Slicers and they look awesome, but I had a question about the elemental damage. I currently have two sets of blades Snow Slicers and Jaggid Shotels+

Same base damage, Snow Slicers seem to have better sharpness, Jaggid has higher elemental damage, but it's poison. I guess that's where I'm mainly caught up, for the poison elemental damage, is the higher number mean a better chance to poison, or that the poison it always inflicts is stronger? Ice makes sense, weak to ice it does more damage, but poison I can't seem to figure out. Kind of making it tough to compare the two before I head out on a hunt. If an enemy is neutral to both Ice and Poison, right now my assumption is Ice will do more flat damage, but poison will have a chance to do more if it inflicts the status on the enemy.

The wiki Weapon Mechanics page doesn't really say, although I don't ever remember purple bubbles coming from one of my hunts heads before, so is my assumption that poison elemental damage means a higher chance to poison the enemy correct?

Poison is a status ailment. For each different status (poison, para, sleep), each monster has a hidden gauge, which fills up as you hit him with a status inflicting weapon. Once that gauge is full, bam, status is inflicted. Meaning the monster becomes poisoned, paralyzed, or asleep'd for a little while. Each hit with a status weapon has a chance to contribute to the gauge. You know which hits do and don't contribute because the ones that do have the status visual effect: purple bubbles for poison, yellow electric arcs for para, puffs of smoke for sleep.

The number in the weapon stats describing the status strength tells you how much a hit contributes to the gauge (in the case that the hit actually is contributing to the gauge). Different monsters have different tolerances to different statuses, meaning their gauge is bigger (takes more to fill it up) or smaller. I think duration of status, once inflcited, also changes from monster to monster. In addition, subsequent status inflictions typically last a shorter while. Meaning, within a single hunt, if you paralyze twice the same monster, the second time will not last as long as the first. The third para will be even shorter, etc.

So, what you are saying is it's a lot more complicated than I imagined. I suppose from what I know of the series so far, that shouldn't be surprising, haha.

Thanks though, that makes a lot of sense and will help me out a great deal when deciding which to bring. I think at this point, as long as ice does bonus damage, I'll bring the Snow Slicers, but when I take on something like Great Baggi, I'll go Jaggid.

Honestly I don't rly know how to balance relative merits of element vs status. My rule of thumb is to foremost go with element if I have the right elemental weapon for the monster's weakness. Some monsters are well known to be extremely weak to a specific status ailment though (I think plesi to poison, maybe?). In any case, you might want to talk to some SnS specialist, they rely primarily on element/status over raw dmg and would know better than me.

It depends on what weapon you are using. If you using a fast weapon like ds and sns you using go for the elemental weapon, but for slow weapons like hammer and gs you go for raw and in the case of hammer you also look at the sharpness.

I'm gonna jump in on this one I think. Is the 3DS version good? I'm buying it for a normal 3DS, not a 3DS XL.

It is alright but you might need the cirlepad pro. It also doesn't have online so unless you have a group of friend who play it I would recommend the wiiu version.

Any greatsword users here? Can anyone recommend some armors I should aim for at G Rank? I remember the go to set for MHFU was Rajang's but he isn't in this game so I'm guessing there is something else.

The text is pretty small and sometimes annoying to read. The font they use doesn't help. Performance wise I prefer playing on the 3DS, it just feels a lot smoother. Controls however is better with the Wii U controller in my opinion. I did get the Circle Pad Pro but I didn't like using it except for underwater battles.

I love these snow slicers, has to be the elemental damage, but finished up all the 3 star village quests and only have Great Baggi left in 4 stars (although I have an urgent one, so that could unlock more). But man did the snow slicers make short work of the hunt both barroth and g jaggi, they ended up in the same area for most of the fight and I had little issues wasting them away. Going to look into what other elemental damage weapon I can make with the materials available now, so I'll have a couple options, but holy smokes did they feel a lot stronger than the other ones with the same base damage. Kind of fun to feel really strong for a change.

With a 1 slot Handicraft +5 charm, it's possible to get Critical Draw, Sharpness +1, Rock Steady and Focus with mostly G Jhen parts and the (hideous) Diablos X helm, which only loses Mind's Eye from the full G Jhen set.

Gods... That sounds like a pretty big if. All my charms tend to be trash. :\
That skill set looks so good though.

I'm still in HR6, I've been here for a while actually I might take a look at the key quests list since there are so many quests.
What is Rocksteady? I've currently been staying away from Focus but I suppose it'll be fun re-learning my GS timings with it.

I've never gotten a lot of awesome charms myself, but even I managed to wind up with one of those so they're probably not too rare.

If you're still in HR6, something like the usual Helios mix might do. Or maybe Diablos X once you hit HR7.

Rocksteady makes you recover a lot faster from hits, offers small current resistance and wind resistance, but it also offers the equivalent of mid-grade earplugs. That means is blocks more roars than regular earplugs, but there's still a handful it still doesn't block (like Diablos and Gigginox). Unfortunately, it requires Miralis parts which you don't have access to just yet.
