What's a good set of starter armor that you guys would recommend? I'm currently rocking a full set of Hunter's Armor that I crafted, but I'm up for some new stuff.

When you feel like you're taking too much damage go to the blacksmith and make the highest defense armor you already have the materials for in each slot.

You're not going to be seeing anything worth putting together until much, much later in the game. Going for full sets is a pretty huge waste of time, and you could burn yourself out farming mats for something that is going to get replaced before long.

Wait how the hell do Tranq Bombs work now? I can't seem to throw them even when I'm tilting the pad

The same way they always did? You choose them and throw them like paintballs or anything else?

They can be tricky. I always find getting right next to the face and smashing it in works. :D

Just make sure it is done when the monsters is weak/limping along or in a trap. Makes it much easier on those capture missions to know when it will succeed and when you're wasting your time.

They are thrown much like Paint bombs, so get a load of those for target practice if you like.

Look at where you want to throw them and hit the item button?

There was a tip about how you have to tilt with the pad in order to throw them or you'll just drop them at your feet. That combined with the fact that I was trying to tranq that green raptor while all of his buddies danced around me and probably got in the way caused me to fail the quest and made me wonder if I was doing something wrong

Ok so I'm going to get this. I think I'll go digital so I can always access it easily.

One quick question. What's a good weapon to start with for somebody new to the series? I hear there are tons of options.

Gore Magala can take off 3/4 of my health with a single hit while he's frenzied. Is Rathalos in the 5* quests? I really want to get out of this starter armor.

And you need Velocidrome parts and you can only fight him on guild quests and expeditions.

oh right, forgot it's a guild quest.
i can share my velocidrome guild quest with you if you didn't get one yet.

edit.
seems like guild quests can only be shared via streetpass. :\

By the time you get it you'll being nearing HR village quests. Not really worth it as better armor comes like immediately after

I have one, I just don't want to do it. Leveling up the Velocidrome quest would be a waste of time for me since you can only have 10 active at a time.

Well I'm probably going to need something better than Derring armor to fight Shaggy.

Okay, this is gunna be a really stupid question -
Is there a way to just go on "patrol" or whatever like you could in MH3U? I wanna gather some resources but I don't understand how you just head out into the wild. In MH3U you just took the bridge out of town on the far right :p

There are a few options. If you are really early in the quest chain, you can just pick one of the quests like " make me a well done steak", and spend most of your time gathering before handing it in. You can later go on expeditions and gather there. And eventually, you unlock proper gathering missions, which just dump you in an area with no goal other than to turn in the pass that spawns in the supply chest after a couple minutes.

So... If I wanted to get into a gunner role what tactics do I need to know about?

Be prepared to be poor, ammo costs an arm.
You'll need to think ahead of the monster : place yourself in safe sots, use the right ammo at the right time on the right part. A good gunner is really valuable for a group, as fleeing/hanging/flying monsters can be staggered easily and fall for free hits, and you'll be able to reach parts harder to hit for blademasters.

Don't pellet friends.

i only needed to do the guild quest three times to get the full armor.
not really a big investment. :p

Added my info to the friends list. I am in the process of adding everyone now. Great OT.

edit: My list is almost full, so after 60 on the list I am only able to add the est. Timezone people.

Saw the insect glaive when 4 first released in Japan, fell in love. Tried it during the demo, fell out of love. Tried it again just now with a refresher on the mechanics, love rekindled.

Plus, the game feels so very fresh over 3U. They really did a great job making more of the same not feel like so much more of the same. But I do miss my shakalakas. This cat has no personality.

Few questions here guys:

I'm playing the demo and I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit, but 2 things:

Playing on the original 3DS XL, is it really that troublesome to lock the camera on a a given monster? I mean, isn't there a lock button a la OoT which just follows the monster everywhere? And yes, I'm already pressing the lock icon on the touchscreen, but I have to keep clicking the L button everytime the monster goes out of view.

Also, are the tutorials better or more comprehensive in the full game? First MH here and although there's decent info by enabling the tutorials, I'm still feeling a little lost about how to dodge, block and attack strategies and so on.

I was a Longsword user in MH3U and I swapped to HH now - absolutely loving it, even solo (still early on, want some slightly better gear before going online). I plan on using LS as my secondary/solo weapon.

Still torn on what low-rank armor to work toward - I'm still on the starter armor and the hits are starting to wipe me out faster now. :/

For hunting horn go with bone armor first. You get Maestro so your songs last longer.

Yes you need to tap L each time you want the camera centred on the monster.

Yes and no. There are a bunch of beginner quests that take you through some basics of monster hunter, crafting and gathering and such, but you'd still be wise to read some wiki's or checkout some beginner guides on youtube.

Armor is incredibly confusing to me at the moment. Should I be focusing on crafting new armor when I get the chance or should I be holding out for a specific set before delving into that stuff, it seems like as soon as I would get one set crafted shortly after I'd come across a new monster that would allow me to craft a better set.

Downloaded the game last night and played for 2 hours non-stop and I'm now hooked. My first MH game ever, btw. There's so much information in this game to take in from the beginning, that it's pretty overwhelming at first. Just have to take the time to soak it all in properly, I guess. I appreciate the game easing us newbs into it.

Got an error when trying to download the free themes though, so I'm not sure how to get those now. Contacted Nintendo support, so hopefully they can help me out with that.

You make armor for skills not defense. Make an armor set with the skills you want. Since you're new I'd recommend Tetsucabra armor. It should be enough to get you into high rank.

Any specific beginner guides you recommend for newbies?

Is the item duplication service supposed the equivalent of the moga farm? I ask because this guy is giving me fuck all. I had honey coming out of my ears just a few hours into MH3U. This guy gives me 3 in a stack max.

Will I not need to worry about being super specific with skills and such until getting into the high rank stuff then?

Since I didn't know when this game was coming to the states I was on complete media black out.

Didn't realize how many Gen 1 and 2 monsters were in it.

I'm sure a lot of you guys are sick of them, but I mostly skipped all the PSP games, so I went straight from PS2 MH2 to MH3, so it's been awhile since I fought some of these guys.
Was fun to kick Kut Kus stupid face in again.

Spend the early hours hunting the same monster a few times to know how they work, mechanically. By then you should have the sets of armour and weapons linked to those monsters. Normally is one monster that helps you fight others.

Its not until later that you can specialise into certain skills that focus around your combat skills or playstyle.

Man, the charge blade sure packs a punch! Each time I land an AED I kinda feel bad for the monster, that thing looks like a borderline nuclear strike.

I'm loving the charge blade a lot. I was going to keep going with the gunlance but I've been having too much fun with the CB. I've just beat the Shark monster whose name I haven't remembered yet. Anyone else think that they really wanted a slime monster but decided to shove a shark texture over it? It feels like 2 different monsters.

How do I get online? I am trying to go on a hunt in the guild hall, I ring the gong and...nothing.

I really could use some help getting rid of these early beasts.

I keep running out of cash since I have to invest heavily into bows.

Added myself to the GAF sheet, PM me if you add me.

Are there lobbies in 4 like on the Wii U version of 3U? Does GAF have a typical lobby/password? I quoted the OT but didn't see one in there.

After I get my Tetsucabra armor, I'm gonna hop online! SnS user here, though since I don't have a fully operational farm yet I won't be blasting everything in sight yet.
