That trailer seemed awful to me. Is monster hunter about gathering roots and running away and hiding from monsters hoping for an environmental element to kill them?

I've only played a couple of MH games, and they never stuck with me (Had a lot to do with the 3DS controls, never tried the console ones) this is exciting to me. To my inexperienced eyes, it seems they're replacing MH's planning/prep and timing with more reaction based gameplay, which I can see ruffling some feathers.

It's about gathering resources to keep yourself healed and your weapons sharp, then killing monsters over and over until you have enough monster materials to build new weapons and armour, then you move up to the next tier of monsters and do the same, with each tier getting tougher and more complex mechanics/attacks.

The running is new I think, usually it's the monster that runs from you to heal.

The thing is MH is a mainstream game series in Japan, players in the west are more of the hardcore type.
This has always been an amusing divide in the fandom. There are obviously hardcore fans in Japan, but they don't make up the majority of the fanbase like they do in the west.

I hope this being western means an expanded story/single player mode. Ive always been interested in the world of MH so having a robust story mode would be sweet.
Honestly, Monster Hunter 4/4U's storyline worked perfectly.

Judging on the what's been shown, it looks like They wanted to make Lost Planet and Dragon's Dogma but ended up combining the two and slapped a Monster Hunter skin on it.
This is developed by the same team who developed Monster Hunter 4. It is 100% a Monster Hunter game.

The trailer didn't impress me as a MH fan since 4U, but I'll definitely give it a try. I just hope that they keep combat the same and they somehow can replicate the separation of areas so I can heal up, sharpen, etc. without having to worry. Even if the game turns out bad, on the bright side, now they have HD assets for traditional MH games.

I'm fairly certain the reveal trailer for MH4(or was it gen? I don't remember) had a guy running away from a monster while environmental destruction was going on. I don't know why people keep bringing this up. I have faith.

A lot of people think that's one of the points of stealth.

I have been waiting YEARS for a proper MH on Playstation so I can play with my friends, none of which tend to buy Nintendo systems. Very pleased to see a full-blown effort here, it's a major release with the potential to significantly grow the franchise in the west.

Additionally, the series has been in dire need of a visual upgrade for a while and things like QoL changes and being built for platforms with a robust online feature set in place or proper controllers can help me get newcomers on board.

All they gotta do now is not screw up the core gameplay and we're good. Also give next gen Tigrex pls.

Hopefully XX Switch gets announced for western release today. I'll probably be getting the PC version of World. Also hoping that the Portable series retains the "classic" MH mechanics with assets from MHWorld.

Monster Hunter World looks nothing like Lost Planet or Dragon's Dogma, both still sorely missed. The only thing I see that resembles DD is the fact that you can scale creatures but that's about it. It hasn't adopted its combat system, art style, creature design, etc.

It's unlikely that Sony paid for this since it's releasing on XB1 and PC some time afterwards. Their money is better spent getting DMC/DD/LP/REMake2. Well, I guess some of us "armchair analysts" were right though about MH on PS4.

So what I understand it slows the game down and the reason for the game lacking a timer.

I fear that this game might end up like Evolved if a monster escape from near death and having to find it again. But hey detective mode.

And just like the MH4 trailer it was focusing on new actions you can take. It's more about the features than the encounter itself.

The biggest issue with MH:W seems to be Capcom's apparently *purposeful* lack of information on exactly where the game falls on the MH spectrum. Is it mainline or is it a spin off? Right now, in this thread, we have at least 4 different groups of MH fans, all with different ideas of what the game is, and no one really has a clue. One group wants the game to radically shake up some of the core tenants of the series, and based on their interpretation of a rather crappy introduction trailer, sees just that. Another group sees all the environmental changes, and is mortified that the series is losing everything that made it the success that it is. The third is made up of people that like the "idea" of liking MH, but can't stand the "jank" of traditional MH. And the fourth are made up of console warriors, just happy with the chaos. I honestly don't know which camp I fall into (minus the 4th), since I don't really know anything about the gameplay. And honestly, neither do any of you. Why didn't Capcom have an immediate, worldwide press release ready to go, explaining some of the details about the game? Isn't this game supposed to re-introduce MH to the world, whether you want traditional combat with HD assets or a complete shakeup of the core systems? Why did I have to learn basic info about the game, third hand (thru GAF), from a twitter account of a European Community Rep? "I know our trailer didn't show this, but relax, all 14 weapons are in the game." "I know you didn't see a HUD, but no worries! Health and Stamina are back, Jack." The Famitsu article might have touched on some of this, but like 99% of the western world, I don't read Japanese. And apparently this game is focusing on the western market. Or maybe not, who knows! Capcom USA put up a blog post at 2:30am this morning, and all it does is regurgitate an overview of the trailer. And keep in mind, the crappy trailer for MH4 that's been mentioned earlier in the thread, was for a game that was still 2 years out. MH:W releases sometime between 6 and 9 months from now. Worldwide. This game was shown at one of the Big Three's press conferences. That's a pretty big deal. And knowing how adored and defended this series is, by both past console and current portable fans, wouldn't you think Capcom would want to limit uproar from everyone by actually giving some solid info? I would have at least put up a video on their Youtube channel showing some actual game play loops. What happens on the 20th, when it's shown that World isn't really all that different? Those that read big changes from the trailer aren't going to be happy. Or vice versa. I guess the point of my round-about ramblings is this: For as important to the Monster Hunter series as this game is supposed to be, Capcom certainly hasn't done it any favors with their terrible unveiling. All we have to show for it, are a bunch of MH fans arguing with themselves over a bunch of non-information.
Catching up on this thread because I just woke up. Well stated. I really hope Capcom takes their marketing for this game seriously, because for a game that'll be out in early 2018, the trailer showed very little.

Have you played a Monster Hunter game? When Rathalos is at low health, it doesn't stay put; it flies away to another area so it can take a nap and regain a small amount of health. You Paintball it (aka put a marker on your map) or just remember where it goes so that you can kill it at its resting place. The firefly tracking feature won't change that dynamic.

I really like that, shows how previous gameplay 'tricks' made possible by hardware limitations can be replaced by more seamless solutions.

Running into the leaves and suddenly the monsters that saw you and are sniffing around dont notice you is not my idea of seamless :p

I'm not really hype about the stealth of the "senses" stuff in their current form. Lots of time though.

That's true. For all we know the stream next week could reveal that this is the next gen MH game that everyone wanted.

And as for stealth slowing down the game if you use it to sharpen/heal: You can always just sharpen/heal in the middle of battle when there's an opening.

300 + hours in MH3U. All we've have seen was a flash, smoke bomb and a trap.

It'd be just as cool if instead of memorizing where its nesting grounds are located, if you could actually put some type of tracking device on it. This way you can find it later and you're free to go and hunt other monsters in the world.

People extrapolate so much off a short trailer showing off new mechanics I seem to remember similar freakouts when the X trailer dropped showing off weapon arts and whatever.

That trailer seemed awful to me. Is monster hunter about gathering roots and running away and hiding from monsters hoping for an environmental element to kill them?

I mean... yes? Gathering and running away are definitely core components of MH

What the fuck is this shit? Id give up!

Holy shit. Is that a bug or is the Ceanetaur deviant just a huge dick?

What is this shit

To be fair thats not even close to the norm. I fought that bitch many many MANY times and never had him do that.

WTF, is that a bug or something? I've been playing since Portable 2nd and I've seen anything like that

If it's a bug let's hope it's patched in the switch version ;P

as a bowgun main that short snippet of gameplay is the most concerning thing I've seen so far. Hopefully bowguns don't just play like you just picked up a turret in Gears/Halo because I like HBG gameplay a lot. Even if it is probably the most arcane and inaccessible thing in MH.

Looks like exactly what the series needed to expand its audience.

or alienate old fans while failing to get any interest from new ones. Capcom is good at that.
