What are the fundamental changes? I like MonHun, but I've only played 2 of them (MH4U and Generations) so it's hard for me to pick out "fundamental" changes.

Eh, it feels that people assume things about aspects of the game that weren't shown. There are a few changes, like the bowgun and the mounting, and there are a few questionable additions, like the fireflies and the stealth, but I'd swear most of the vitriol in this thread is based on assumptions, primarily fueled by a rumor that may or may not be entirely true, because nothing shown warrants so much criticism. It's a trailer to a new game, of course they focus on new mechanics, but people make up scenarios about entirely different approaches on Monster Hunter World's hunting based on small indications. I just wish Capcom will hurry and show a quest from the game and will clear everything up, for better or worse.

Because it obviously is.

It's like people have forgotten the MH4 reveal trailer with just a dude running away.

MH4 came out 2 years later and was announced in Japan not long after 3U was announced. There was zero reason to draw anything from the trailer. This game has an entirely different context most important of which is that it launches in less than a year.

MHW spent more time showing the new features instead of just showing what's old? Shocking.

New features are shown on top of confirmation that 14 weapon types are back but no, let's whine about the game being dumbed down.

Just watch the same exact MH gameplay be shown in a live demo soon.

That was a conceptual trailer for a game that was two years away. This is a trailer for a game that's out in less than a year.

And? If you are going to condemn a game based on a reveal trailer then go all the way.

I think what bothers people is the weird detective mode, the grappling hook, and other quality of life stuff they're adding to the game. Some may love that but others are weary that it ruins what makes Monster Hunter a fun, challenging series.

Not showing all of the weapons or a HUD really raises those questions and even I'm a bit weary that we're getting Lost Planet mechanics in a game that honestly didn't need them.

I mean, looking at what they showed and assuming it will just be what some other version of 'detective vision' is and not be in any way different is a big assumption.

Quality-of-life changes sound long overdue for this series if anything, and I would argue that there's a difference between busywork and something being challenging. Just taking their last game, say, XX, and making it prettier seems like a waste of effort if they're not going to make any changes.

Lastly, I don't think there is any good way they could have possibly shown all the weapons in a single trailer without making it just about that. I imagine the lack of a HUD is to make cuts easier and more like a trailer than a gameplay video, but this really sounds like a big overreaction.

MH has never been at the right place, right time for me and this finally rolls around and there are apparently all these gotchas? Back to waiting around I guess.

I-I-It's not portable, where Monster Hunter shines.

Did you watch the intial gameplay trailer for Uncharted 4? You know the one with all the climbing and the sliding and slipping around that looks really cool?

Looks alot like this to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe-RAeDfOMM&t=3s

There's no reason for the bowgun to operate like a machine gun pulled outta gear of war.

Yes, I did. It still doesn't look like Uncharted. You sound ridiculous, just stop.

Same leads =/= same team.

It's the same team. This is being developed as the next major game in the series and the first 5th Gen game.

Let's be honest here, this is Capcom. Their recent track record's going to increase scrutiny any time they want to mess with a tried and true system. It worked with RE7 but not with Dead Rising, SFV, or what seems to be MvCi.

I agree that it could just be an overraction, and I really do hope that's what it is, but for now I personally am a bit weary. Hoping for the best though!

Side note: I hope the new assets can be used in whatever portable version they eventually decide to do.

Actually, we don't know if the last two are confirmed or not. All we know is that Kaname is the director. Which gives me hope, but we'll see.

I read on Twitter that it has regenerating health, is that true? Because if so...

gKrzK_s-200x150.gif

The only indication of there being any change to health mechanics in the trailer was there was a kind of raspberry jam effect while the player was being tossed around while on the back of the monster, but that could just as well be a new indicator for mounting a monster that's moving away from the bar that was introduced in 4. They already confirmed it has the standard health and stamina displays, so I don't know what more they can really do.

Besides, regenerating health has been a standard mechanic since the first game, though most people tend to not notice it.

Looked really bland, I'll admit.

It's technically fine. The art and coloring are just more bland. But the first areas in pretty much all the games are bland as hell. Wait for the Tundra or Volcano. MH Tri still has the best looking areas in the series. The 4U and Generations volcano areas suck. So boring.

I'm sure the visuals will be fine once more areas are shown

This could very easily be similar to current MH, with just the red part (temp damage unless hit again) regenerating. I doubt the full blown health regeneration as in FPS games, as that would drastically change the game. Managing healing items is extremely important to MH.

I kind of disagree with the notion that this was a trailer that caters to old fans. I mean, just the reaction on this thread alone contradicts it. If they had confirmed that the Monster Hunter everyone likes wouldn't change much and everything on the trailer is just QoL additions, there wouldn't be so much confusion and the reception would have been more positive. It actually seems like a trailer that caters to people new to the series, or more like those with a basic understanding of it and nothing more, as it's trying to be as flashy as it can.

Nothing on GAF is a barometer for anything imo. The MHWorld initial trailer, much like previous firsts, focused more on new features rather than giving a core understanding of what the game is about. Environmental traps, grappling hooks, camo cloak, tracking bugs etc., were all specifically focused on. By catering it's meant that all these new things mean something to people who understand how the game already works.

Looking forward to mounted combat, in a collab with Squenix using Chocobos as mount. Buy bird armor as DLC for $4.99 125 CapCredits!

this thread could filled with:

I'll wait for the G-Rank version

Well, if the DLC pipeline is as typical of Capcom as they're known for, that may not be the worst tactic to take for this game.

Please Tsujimoto, use your powers of nepotism to tell the execs to not nickel and dime new content.

Really? I remember there being a huge uproar about the health regeneration ring in DS2.

That was likely the lifegem, which made the Souls core healing item, the estus, seem like a conflict of healing items.

I am sure the health regen in reference here is a ring that gives you 1 HP per second or so. That's been in games as early as Demon's Souls, IIRC.

It was the life gems not a ring.

I remember when Dark Souls was first revealed and people were freaking out that it had checkpoints (bonfires).Hell I was one of them.

I hope my complaints of MHW pre release turn out to be as stupid as my complaints for Dark Souls pre release were.

From Arekkz on Reddit, a guy known in the MH community,

  • Multiplayer is now "drop in", so if you begin a quest solo, your friends can join you. This is what the flare is used for from the gameplay trailer.
  • Underwater exploration was seen but they have confirmed underwater combat will NOT be making a return
  • The map is fully open, and there will NOT be loading zones between areas, so gone are the days of running out of the zone to hide or heal
  • All 14 weapons are confirmed to be returning (thanks Kogath for the link)
  • The game is NOT a spin-off, it is main series

EDIT - He's going to be interviewing Capcom this morning on MH:W, that's the info he knows above.

So..Is there any validity that Sony blocked Nintendo from this "multiplatform" game as rumors suggested? Why would they feel threatened?

Hard to make any real judgement with what we have seen. I am not a fan of the more "realistic" color scheme though, to much brown.

So the wording makes it sound like you can still begin a fight with other players like usual, and that Zones are still a thing, but I wonder if there's anything different in how monsters traverse them.

So far noone has verified the truthfullness of the rumour, but seems it came half true. And MH sells huge as a portable game in Japan. Sony is shitting the bed saleswise there, so they want exclusivity for partially funding the game. Capcom is gambling that "westernizing" MH on PS4, Xbox1 and PC, might increase sales, so seeing is believing. Still think its a separate spinoff, reboot on MH1 so they won't upset Nintendo. I'm sure Nintenfo gavr Capcom there blessing because I doubt Capcom would make a MH game behind Nintendo's back, without consulting them first.

Sounds great. Usually I'm averse to change with franchises I love, but nothing I've seen rubs me the wrong way about this yet. It's obvious the E3 stuff was set up to show the new things being brought in to the series. (Grappling hook/environmental traps and destruction). With the people behind it, and confirmation of the weapons returning, I'm sure combat will be just as good as ever. Love the drop in/drop out co-op too. Wonder how this works with Carting.

Also, I love the ideas of the monsters relentlessly chasing you when you need to heal, and no longer getting de-zoned by a monster trapping you in the corner.

I'm so damn hyped about this game. It's what I wanted for so long.

Good stuff, thanks.

Sounds like people will need to make the same adjustments as MGS players did for MGSV with the game going open world. No more running away to another screen/area etc.
