Most Overrated game of the year, 2024 edition

Hold it up against any 3D platformer of this generation, the past decade, or even since Mario 64. It’s one of the best ever in the genre. It doesn’t innovate in the way that Galaxy or 64 did. It’s just really well made and has a level of polish that Yooka Laylee, A Hat in Time, Lucky’s Tale, etc do not. It’s as close to a Nintendo platformer from another company that I can remember.
I don’t know what you mean by polish in respect of 3D platformers. To be honest I just want very satisfying gameplay which games like A Hat in Time & Tinykin deliver in equal measure to Astro.

Dragon's Dogma 2

I like it but hate it at the same time. It's so damn unfinished and so disappointingly repetitive and shallow. And yet it's stil at 86 on Metacritic..

As a big fan of DD: DA, I sadly have to agree. We kept hearing in interviews that DD2 was supposed to be the original vision of the first game fully realized with a much bigger budget, more production time, etc. What we got instead was essentially just a remake that barely progressed the mechanics of DD1 while repeating many of its same flaws and somehow even regressing in certain areas.

Sure, something like Veilguard is still a worse game, but most people who were paying even the slightest lick of attention knew it would be garbage. Dragon's Dogma 2, on the other hand, was at the top of my and others' most anticipated list for years, and I couldn't be more excited when it finally released (apart from the whole Capcom anti-modding debacle). I won't deny that I had a decent amount of fun over the course of 85-some hours, but it's easily my biggest disappointment of the year and I don't think it even remotely deserves its Metacritic score, especially when you consider the PC port of Dark Arisen barely managed to squeeze past 80.

I mean. Come on. It’s obviously Astro Bot. Sony made a solid platformer with tight gameplay and their fans who have to pretend that they like ‘deep narratives’, over the shoulder, walking, talking, press square to inspect gameplay have gone absolutely wild for it.

That being said, it’s still a 9/10. Just not ‘9.4/10 best game eva!’ like our Sony bros would have us believe.

Yup

Of what I played this year it’s the one that I had the highest hopes for and ended up so disappointing. Haven’t even finished it and from what I read I don’t miss much story wise.

It’s not a generational game though, or a 94 being real. It’s a very good game and that’s it. It’s been massively overrated because there’s many very good games that release every single year.

Dogma 2, such a wet fart of a game that is somehow even worse than the first one that was already deeeeeeply flawed.

The only good use for it was blacklisting all the youtubers who praised this thing to hell and beyond.

Dragons Dogma 2. Just a worse version of the previous game.

Nice, a hot take thread!

Here is mine: Elden Boring DLC. The original game was vastly overrated too.

Probably something like Stellar Blade.

An admittedly solid combat system and OST, and it runs really well from a technical POV, but if the developers gave us a soul-less male protagonist instead of a soul-less gooner-bait one for the culture warriors to fight over, then this game becomes one of the most forgettable 7/10 titles of the year and it does half the sales it ended up doing.

I would have put Hellblade 2 on the list, but no-one really rated it to begin with outside of the rabid Xbox crowd that had nothing else to cling onto for the first 6 months this year.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

The best aspect of Elder Ring was it's incredible world, stuffed with amazing things to find and enjoy, that offered up an open world experience heads and shoulders above everything else. Shadow of the Erdtree has a huge open world, but forgot to actually put stuff in it. Just endlessly trotting around to find useless crafting materials. They also decided camera control and screen visibility were difficulty mechanics now, and so some bosses are designed to literally disengage your camera and fill the screen with garbage so you can't see the fight. Lastly, the final boss is probably the least enjoyable boss in the entire thing. It's a needlessly long, repetitive fight whose second phase is just simply not very fun to learn. It's not "too hard", it's just "not good enough" to bother with. I'll easily replay Elden Ring again - but I'll never play the DLC again. It's high review scores show me reviewers don't know anything, and likely just rated it on its size without understanding the quality therein.

The thing is, it sold 1.5m copies in 2 months. No-one is really going wild for it other than journos and some vocal randoms on social media, which makes some people think the Sony normies are going nuts over it. The hype and discourse around the game online isn't translating to sales.

Didn't play that much this year compared to the last, so im kinda not sure about it.
I enjoyed Elden Ring DLC but i think it doesn't deserve that high score with all the issues it has.

But speaking of overrated, im going to go with Yakuza, its the default game, even if i didn't play it. Yakuza always sucks so that is my pick.

Not really overrated - Wukong is awesome but that praise and glory should have been for Space Marine 2

I'd pick Hellblade II. I never expected or wanted the sequel to become something bigger to compete with the likes of God of War, but the game is a step back in almost all areas except for the graphics quality. And even that annoys me, I don't like to play games with black bars, it's not a movie ffs.

Well, this is roughly what I wrote about, without any criteria set, the topic turned into - "There were no good games, everything was bad", which in principle was expected, this is Neogaf after all. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

From the stuff I actually played:
Probably Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
I liked it but I think it's closer to an 8/10 than the 89 it has on metacritic. The new setting is fun, the new party members are great and they vastly improved the combat, but I also think it has one of the weakest main stories in the franchise, some annoying pacing issues and much of the side content was pretty forgettable.

From the stuff I haven't played.
Dragons Dogma 2.
Skipped it at launch because of the awful performance on consoles. But reading about it over the months I've been noticing a lot of mixed and negative reactions to it. DD1 was a fun but flawed game and from what I've read they apparently focused on making more of the same instad of a sequel that truly elevated the experience by building on what worked in the first one and fixing what didn't.

This thread could be shortened to one page by simply making a post:

"Do you think these games are overrated? If it is on this list, like the post: Balatro, Stellar Blade, Stalker 2, Elden Ring DLC, Astro Bot, Wukong, Dragon's Dogma 2, Metaphor, Star Wars Outlaw, Dragon Age The Veilguard, Hellblade 2. If the game is not on this list, write your own version"

Black Myth Wukong. It's all style no substance: the game. Atrocious level design and button mashing is all it has besides 1 or 2 cool bosses and fire cinematics. The ending is a kick in the balls too, it's so damn sudden and it felt like there was a whole half of the game missing. Later they confirmed it themselves that the game was originally supposed to have 12 chapters but they had to cut it to 6. It's literally half-cooked. People talk about it being a soulslike but I don't agree, it's closer to the action game style of older GoW and DMC titles imo. So everything it does is done better in other games, the only thing unique about it is its take on Chinese Mythology, which slaps.

How this game gets ratings above 7/10 is beyond me.

Really don't know why anyone would care that I liked a game less than someone else. That's basically what this comes down to.

I think Balatro is a lot of fun but it's not anything remotely worth calling GOTY. If this is the state of gaming where a simple card game that relies heavily on RNG runs is the best thing to come out in 2024, we have a problem with gamers for being too lazy and casual.

Even though I liked the game for what it was, this is the only correct answer.

It literally got shutdown after 2 weeks, everybody got refunded and the studio got closed. And it was their very first release.

I can see metaphor. I like it, has some neat things to it. A budget game for full price. The combat just made me want to play shin megami.
