Most underrated console games of this generation?

Happy Holidays and Merry Christams! :)

I have a collection of games for DC, PS2, GC, Xbox and GBA-SP. I think I have a decent collection on all these but I know I'm missing some gems or games that I've simply overlooked. E.g games that were underated in the gaming press or games that showed their true colors after extensive playtesting or games that have just surprised you.

Please post such games for the above formats that you consider gems that have been underrated. Thanks in advance... :)

Metroid Prime (both of 'em). Even though the first one gathered great sales, it should've sold more based on the quality.

Conflict: Desert Storm 1 & 2, Wario Ware GC, Donkey Konga, and Mario Kart DD are way up there with the best multiplayer experiences I've had this generation, and I hardly ever hear them mentioned. Play them all quite often.

Metroid Prime is the highest rated game this gen, it's not underrated. Jesus, some of you need to pick up a dictionary.

PN03 is underrated.

cubivore is worth it if you can get it for $20 or less. great game, although it's a bit short. graphically it's underwhelming but the gameplay is pretty fun.

for the DC you should really get bangai-o if you don't have it... most fun game ever, maybe.

Pisses me off that the game has no VGA support.

Thief: Dark Shadows, Enclave, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Breakdown, Astro Boy (GBA), Rallisport Challenge, R-Type Final, Ikaruga, and about two dozen more that I haven't named due to holiday fatigue........

Red Dead Revolver. Greatest western-themed game ever? Yes.

Wave Race: Blue Storm. Whoever tells you that WR64 is "much better" is high on nostalgia.

Fatal Frame II. Silent Hill this, Silent Hill that. FUCK Silent Hill and its shitty ass RE's red-headed-stepchild-like controls. FFII is creepy as fuck *and* actually includes fun gameplay.

Ridge Racer V. Screw crash-a-tons. This is what arcade racing is all about.

Beyond Good and Evil: It has now become a cult classic but the fact that it was overlooked by so many is a travesty. It is, imho, one of the absolute greatest games to come from this generation and it's a damn shame we might never see a sequel. Interesting story (not really)... I was watching the 6:00 news and they had a story on Christmas in Iraq. And when one of the dudes was opening one of the presents he got from a charity... it was Beyond Good and Evil. And a Merry Christmas indeed!

great multiplayer game
I probably shouldn't continue the "underrated vs overlooked" confusion, but it doesn't help that it never got released in the US, as far as I know.

I couldn't agree more. It was quite saddening seeing the price drop to $20 just two weeks after the release. It was definetly under appreciated. This game deserves a sequel to continue with the story, but the sales were abysmal. The game was intelligent, it really got you thinking and I loved the whole conspiracy spin. Gameplay was good as well, and I thourghly enjoyed the hovercraft portions. Saw the game at Fry's for $15 new so I bought a couple copies to give out as gifts.

If you're into racers, I fully endorse Re-Volt and Speed Devils for the Dreamcast. Both games more than exceeded my expectations and are personal favorites.

Shenmue series, MGS2, Stuntman. I thoroughly enjoyed all of these. All are at the top of my favorite console games of this generation. And yet Shenmue 1 and 2 and MGS2 catch a lot of crap for being too different among other things and Stuntman is just overlooked. I'm interested in Red Dead Revolver now after this thread though. I've heard nothing but good things from those who played.

Ico and MGS2. I know the sales were great for MGS2, but half the people that played it said that it was crap. At the time, the gameplay was the best out there and the game had such an amazing storyline. There were so many plot twists and so many unexpectied things such as
the discovery of The Patriots and Liquid taking over Ocelots mind
that made the game one of the best this generation. Its just a shame that so many people cant see that and let raiden ruin the whole game for them.

Shadow of Memories / Destiny
Klonoa 2
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Max Payne 2
Fatal Frame/Project Zero

So true. I enjoyed the darn game so much it turned me onto the show. Indiana Jones and the emperor's tomb(also by the Collective) is another great beatemup. I had tons of fun with the fisticuff action and weapons in the game. Did anyone ever notice that theres a boomerang like weapon with pointed edges that was used within both games? The blocking system in Indys game was abit more fleshed out though, its been awhile since I played it but I remember blocking was allot more hands on than Buffys was. Though overall what made Buffys fighting more fun was the addition of the magic system that could be used for pulling off some of the more devistating combos in the game.

Sonic Heroes.(All)

Yeah, yeah, it has problems. But you would think by the amount of flack this game gets that it wasn't any good at all. And that is certainly not the case. It is in fact, a much better game than the first two 3D Sonics, though a far cry from the Genesis games of yore. Glitches to be sure, but with a little practice you can learn to adjust to the game's short-comings.

Samurai Jack.(PS2, GC)

This one didn't get very good reviews from what I saw in the magazines, but I recieved this as a gift and was pleasantly surprised. Nothing origninal, but it plays well enough, and is surprisingly fun.

Guardian Heroes Advanced(GBA)

Piss on the reviewers. True, its not the Saturn version, nor does it try to be. On its own, it's one of the finest action titles available for the system. For any fan of 2D games, its a must-play.

Rocky(All systems). A good movie licenced game? Is it possible? Yes, it is, thanks to Ubi Soft. If you're even remotely interested in the franchise, or simply a fan of boxing, this game is a great bargain. It's also very fun, and is a nice complement to EA's Fight Night games. I haven't yet played the sequel, Rocky Legends, though I suspect its just as good if not better.
