Cate Blanchett is amazing in Blue Jasmine, I know it's been said to death, but wow. Great movie, heartbreaking in many ways, but not necessarily depressing because I didn't root for Jasmine. Love the rest of the cast, especially all the Boardwalk Empire cameos. Have only seen a fraction of Woody's films, but I'd put it up there.

Sorcerer
The film takes a bit to get going but once it does it turns into a real nerve shredder. The second half of the film is amazingly tense and that bridge scene is spectacular.

Just finished watching this and, much to my surprise, it had nothing to do with magic. *slaps forehead* All these years, I'm thinking this was William Friedkin's dark take on a fantasy film, only to end up in a grimy adventure-thriller more comparable to Herzog's Aguirre than anything i envisioned. It does take its sweet time getting going, but from ~45 minutes straight to the end I liked it a lot. The bridge scene was indeed great, and I loved the atmosphere in the jungle.

I am very interested in how the upcoming Blu-ray restoration will look, and would like to watch this again in it's original aspect ratio.

Oh, and all these years later, BAM The Simpsons Mr. Plow bridge joke suddenly has layers.

The Place Beyond the Pines - DVR'd this one on a whim while browsing the TV schedule. Turned out to be pretty damn good. The commercials that ran while it was in theaters gave me the impression that it was just some generic action movie, but it was nothing like that.

Jean de Florette is a solid drama about human greed. Great acting from the three main characters, plus a beautifully rural Southern France setting. I look forward to watching the sequel.

Yeah, Manon des Sources was a great follow up to this French classic, which has wonderful music and stars Gérard and Elisabeth Depardieu (I've got the DVD double feature on my Amazon wish list).

sorcerer /warlock double feature for massive fantasy confusion

Saw Slumdog Millionaire

I honestly didn't give a shit when Jamals
brother died.
Also was he seriously playing for like $325000 USD? lol.

Dallas Buyers Club

damn. Mat McConaughey and Jared Letto did a great job depecting the characters.
loved it. 8/10

P.S. since when did Matthew become a legit A-list actor? After Mud, his part in Wolf of Wall St. and that HBO show, the man gained my respect.

Is it just me because anytime I drink my movie meter pings straight to terrible movies. Just rewatched The Animal lord knows why

Tetsuo: The Iron Man - I've not seen this in years. It's a weird film but very enjoyable. The music is outstanding and I love the final showdown. I have a soft spot for stop-motion effects being used on people and the ending delivers it in spades.

I might watch Body Hammer next.

Short Term 12
Well-crafted film that mines an unusually real subject for its rich emotional rewards.

Now You See Me
Filled me with disgust, in large part because of the consciously discarded potential. The slick, witty, intriguing first half, together with an endless stellar cast, had me primed to end up adoring Now You See Me. Sadly the film goes absolutely nowhere, or rather into a self-referential black hole, leaving as its only parting gift the revelation that you were deceived. The film builds up a very grand historical mystique only to throw it (almost completely) away in a puff of smoke and idiotically yell ‘Tada!’ We compared it afterwards with Ocean’s 11, but at least at the end of that film we are
blindsided by an impossibly grand romantic gesture, something universally joyful taking place between two characters to whom we have to some extent become attached
. Now You See Me
blindsides us with an ugly little revenge, taking place between one character about whom we suddenly know very little, and another about whom we have mixed feelings
. Tada? Tada, you fucks? A colossal waste.

Frances Ha
Lives or dies on how you respond to the character, and she’s not for everybody. I think in my case she might hit a little too close to home for comfort, and I already know very well the wages of trying to live on one’s innocence. Much less adorable in men than women, like being naked except for a t-shirt. Three things I appreciated were the beautiful black & white, the complete depiction of her insane trip to Paris, and the final explanation of the film’s title. Edit:
Her eventual success rang absolutely hollow for me, and I had no sense that she had developed at all over the course of the film.

The Way Way Back
Satisfying tale of an adolescent finding his feet. Effectively uses lies to tell the truth, using artistic license to dispel realistic inconveniences, whilst deliberately exploring the dark and difficult matters of how things are (for example I appreciated their
conscientiously holding back the protagonist’s first kiss for his later life
). The film’s heart is a truly funny turn by Sam Rockwell, in a brilliant older brother / crazy uncle type character.

Here's all 24 films I saw at Sundance, ranked from best to worst: http://letterboxd.com/thefilmstage/list/sundance-film-festival-2014/

Top 5:

1) Boyhood
2) The Better Angels
3) The Voices
4) Land Ho!
5) Listen Up Philip

All full reviews are here, with much more coming the next few days, along with a full wrap-up.

Cant wait to watch The Raid 2 ! HNNNGGGGG!!

The Place Beyond the Pines
Watched it for the 4th time as i am in love with this movie. I hated Bradley Cooper in the Hangover movies but with this movie he got my respect , as it shows that he can be a very good actor.
the moment when Jason is pointing the gun at him, willing to kill him, and he says :"I'm Sorry Jason" is goddamn strong ! You believe that he is apologizing for killing his father years ago, you feel the pain that he had been carrying all those years
If you are not sure if you should watch that movie, give it a try!

I have no clue what movies are coming out this year (still need to read that article Expendable :p ), all I know is INHERENT VICE. Love me some PTA.

Her was kind of disappointing to me. I thought the depiction of a near future was really well done and Phoenix and Johansson delivered great performances, but I could never get past the fact that basically he's in love with his cell phone. I found his relationship with Rooney Mara to be more heartbreaking. I had the same emotional disconnect with A.I. It didn't help that I saw it in a theater with people insisting on rifftracking and giggling throughout the movie. Maybe I'll change my opinion when I get to see it at home. Finding out that SexyKitten was Kristen Wiig blew my mind though.

He was always a good actor. He just had a spell of shitty rom coms for a few years.

Watch killer joe

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

A friend of mine lent me the movie a few weeks ago, and I finally watched it yesterday. I found it a hilarious comedy with solid performances from Amy Adams, Frances McDormand, and Cirian Hinds. It won't make you rethink life, but it made me forget my troubles for the day. 8/10.

The Lone Ranger (2013)

The same friend also just showed me this movie in his man cave. I found it a much funnier movie than I expected. As many have mentioned, the railroad scene at the end makes watching the whole movie worthwhile. Is it as funny as Pirates of the Caribbean? Nope. Is it a good looking and light hearted western? Yup. 7/10.

Pretty excited to see Stranger by the Lake and Gloria this weekend. And a midnight screening of Akira....unnnnfffffff

Going to see Stranger by the Lake tonight and hopefully Gloria sometime this weekend. Where is the midnight showing of Akira at? My girlfriend hasn't seen it yet. I am going to R. Stevie Moore and Gary Wilson on Saturday so hopefully it isn't that night.

Saw Dallas Buyers Club today. It was pretty good, mostly because MM and Jared Leto were both pretty amazing. Also on the train of "when the hell did McConaughey become super awesome" because i always associated him with shit like Failure to Launch and Fool's Gold, but then I saw Killer Joe. Killer Joe is awesome. Come to think of it, maybe Jared Leto too because I hate his band a lot

V/H/S 2 4/10 - was Safe Haven not just the greatest? how are there actual people who complain about the
"papa" line?
it was the perfect punchline. also, I think if it was a full length film it wouldn't have been as good; its pacing might be its biggest asset. there is absolutely no filler. I didn't care much for The Raid, but now i'm pretty excited for the sequel after seeing what this guy is capable of.

it's a shame about the other 70 minutes.

August: Osage County

The last 2013 movie I wanted to see. Was sort of in and out of it from the start of the movie to the dinner scene where I became more fully engaged the rest of the way through. The movie as a whole felt so depressingly fucked up. It was very good, but at the same time it felt like the movie wasn't right for me. It's still worth watching for the performances

Was stuck in a hotel for the night so I did what anyone would do: watch Mary Pickford movies from youtube on my phone. I saw Poor Little Rich Girl from 1917. You'd think it's just a light-hearted comedy, but it's actually Soviet propaganda about the downfalls of capitalism and the coming revolution. She so adorable though, where can I find a girl like that? You know one who's 25 but dresses like she's 8.

Hunger Games 2

There are some cringe worthy moments but not nearly as bad as the first one.

It all goes downhill when
they enter the Quarterbattle
or whateverthefuck tho

Not terrible for a teen girls movie

i jsut finished watching click...

am i soft for crying ?

old man flaccid

no

I finally got around to seeing The Good The Bad and The Weird. Long over due, I really havent tapped much into the foreign language section on Netflix. Gotta change that.

Agreed on the punchline, it was so perfect. Excellent capper to such a high-strung segment. I think Safe Haven alone put it above VHS1, I also liked the aliens one though. Was well-done. And the eyeball one had a good idea...just fat-fingered execution. Don't get why so many people praise the gopro zombie one. I think what sealed it for me was that the wraparound in 2 had a more grimly fun ending.

anyway if you liked Safe Haven you should also be excited for Killers-- premiered at sundance, is directed by The Mo Brothers one of which also directed Safe Haven. Got pretty good WOM out of the fest.

Oblivion (2013)

Okay, what the hell. I really thought the first 20-30 minutes of this movie were pretty great. Awesome atmosphere, interesting exposition, incredible scenery... then it just got really boring and cliche. Still though, soundtrack is pretty god tier.

5/10, although a solid 9/10 for the first 20-30 minutes.

Its about time you seen Face/Off :)

Saw Baraka, some impressive imagery, but with the music, it became a little much at times.
It didn't had the impact Koyaanisqatsi had on me, but was kept short enough to remain impressive without become annoying.

Then saw the BBC doc on the Ganges, and it wasn't as visually striking (obviously, also because it was 1080i) but it had some nice shots here and there.
Kind of annoying to follow these nearly propagandistic videos though, trying to find the positive spin in people sifting through garbage or people washing their faces were they throw their corpses.

Saw The Great Train Robbery from 1903. Mindblowing that this is now over 100 years old. It's not exactly Voyage dans la Lune, but it was still pretty cool.

swoon, how was The Vikings?

Yeah, very mediocre movie. "End Boss" design was hillariously bad and uninspired.

The Last King of Scotland: Whitaker was clearly supporting here, so him winning all those lead actor awards was an obvious category fraud, but it's a good movie. Not really sure why it was necessary to have a white doctor as the main character, especially one dumb enough to sleep with Amin's wife, but I guess you got to sell to your audience.

Atonement: Well that was a bit of a bummer, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. It really is a sad and beautiful movie, though I have no idea how he accidentally put the wrong letter in that envelope, and how long did he stand by that fence before he realized it.

Bram Stoker's Dracula: One of those movies that looks so great it doesn't even matter it's not very good, though I've always had a soft spot for it anyway. Controversial opinion time, but I don't think Keanu Reeves is as terrible here as his reputation would lead one to believe. Horrendous accent, sure, but I blame the director for this. Coppola should have just gone "You know what, Keanu, about that accent. Let's not. We'll just add a line about Harker being raised in America."

The road - on gafs recommendation.

It was alright. I enjoyed it but didn't really explain anything with how things got the way they are and the flashback scenes dont show anything either. Otherwise it was good

I'm about to delve into Scorsese's filmography, here's what I haven't seen yet:

His shorts, Who's That Knocking at My Door, Boxcar Bertha, Italianamerican, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, New York New York, American Boy: A Profile of: Steven Prince, The Last Waltz, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence, Kundun, My Voyage to Italy, Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues, Shine a Light, Public Speaking, George Harrison: Living in the Material World. (jeez this list was a lot longer then expected.)

Can I get some recommendations on things I absolutely need to watch or that I absolutely should not bother with?

I will also be rewatching some of his things I have already seen.

Heh it was fun. I'd seen pieces before but never the whole messy twisty thing

Boxcar Bertha is entirely skippable unless you're a completionist.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

A step up from the first Hunger Games film I'd say. The first part of the movie was actually pretty good and more adult (as in more brutal) compared to the first one. I liked the idea of an uprising and the regime brutally taking measures against protesters. Sadly after a strong intro the pacing drops to a low which doesn't really help and only makes you feel like this movie could have done with fewer minutes. But when the games finally start things start to get more interesting again. Some great action sequences pass by and Jennifer Lawrence gets more space to show she's a good actress. A bit sad that Jeffrey Wrights character had such a small role, he's a great actor and I liked seeing him here. Adding Philip Seymour Hoffman was a good choice too and considering the rather surprising ending (I haven't read the books) of this film I bet his character is gonna be around a lot more in the next two films. Actually looking forward to the next one now.

7,5/10

swoon, how was The Vikings?

it's big and colorful in the ways films aren't anymore, the rest of it is pretty silly.

he bio and the gossip around he is doubly gross because of her own screen persona.

he didn't do all the blues doc, and none of the segments are great.

while it's tempting to skip, public speaking is really fun.

12 years a slave. Well it was a well crafted torture for the viewers. I understand the need to make sure the message gets across and the atrocities never get forgotten, but somewhere there lies a line where the message gets buries under the torture porn.
