My apologies to Ubisoft, Sony, Activision, EA, MS etc. for making a big deal out of $70 games

Obviously this is about Nintendo charging $90 for Mario Kart World while it looks two generations behind Forza Horizon, The Crew, NFS and other open world racers from these so called Evil/Greedy publishers.

EA was literally voted the worst company in the world during the gen when they were charging $60 for games that looked like this:

Sony Take2 started off the $70 price tag this gen followed quickly by Activision, and later Sony. Thanks to latest leaks and court filings, we now know that their games cost $200-300 million, and COD actually costs $500 million last gen. Again, they kept the prices at $60 until the start of this gen, and released $60 versions of their cross gen games with no upgrade fees.

They understood that not every game costs $200 million to make, and released Astrobot for $60, and Miles for $50.

Even MS released Hellblade for $50 and Remedy released Alan Wake 2 for $50. $40 on PC.

MS did 4k 60 fps remasters of all their games for free. Sony only charged $10 for them. Most other publishers like Ubisoft and EA did them for free. Nintendo is charging $80 for them. For a remaster.

Either it's time to vote for Nintendo as the worst company in America, or go on our knees and beg forgiveness from these other publishers for giving us these graphically impressive 100 hour games for just $70. I'd rather do the former, but doing the latter for now. So Jimbo, Philbo, Bobby, and Monsuier Guillemot , I'm sorry, but we have a new greedy CEO in town and its no surprise his name is Doug Bowser.

Nintendo just guaranteed a price increase to 80 dollars next gen. They made it easy for Sony and Microsoft.
Next gen? Dude, i wouldnt be surprised if this gives Sony,MS, EA and others the goahead to increase the price of their holiday 2025 games.

With Nintendo, it's simply demand. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched at 60 dollars despite being a DE of the original version from the Wii U and sold 65 million units on the Switch alone. It is still currently more than 50 dollars.

Tears of The Kingdom launched 3 years into the 9th gen of PS and Xbox at 70 dollars on a machine less powerful than the PS3 in some ways, and sold 20 million. Breath of The Wild climbed to 32 million after years of being at 60 USD with no price drop.

With other publishers, it really will be about costs when the price goes from 70 to 80 bucks. 60 dollars in 2005 is 98 2025 dollars, and the games market has not and will not grow in users like it did in the HD era. Devs don't want to crunch and are make an average of six figure salaries before benefits in the States, voice actors are striking and want more and more money, dev times are skyrocketing. Naughty Dog spent years restructuring their studio for efficiency reasons and will spend 7 years worth of hundreds of top industry talent man hours on Intergalactic in San Fran. That's not sustainable.

Profit margins are down, corporate debt is up and expensive. Something's got to give.

Both Nintendo and Sony just had their most profitable gens ever.

This is just greed. And its going to blow up in their face when no one but the rich buy Mario kart World. 65 million. I dont think it clears 10 million in the first year. Quote me.

Also, Nintendo devs in Japan dont cost nearly as much as Sony, MS, EA and Acitvision devs on the west coast.

The problem is that you (and everyone else) didn't actually make a big deal out of it. Everyone complained online and then their $70 games sold millions and millions of copies. Exactly what will happen with Nintendo's games too.

Sony Started $70 game? I Though it was Take Two?
Sony announced the next gen games at $70 at the PS5 showcase in September 2020. Activision soon followed a few hours later. Then Ubisoft and EA soon after.

Take2 might have been the first, i dont pay attention to sports games.

Take Two raised the priced first then other publishers followed...

I bet GTA6 is going to have an "aggressive" price. Then it'll be over, at least games WILL have to be really good if I'm ever going to buy them on launch again. These companies will learn that they just can't put the price up without the quality.

The prices will go down when the user-base grow big enough to support the games.

They could release the games multiplatform to cover the price of development but they want their console to sell.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony steals the "charge more for physical" idea.

People until April 2nd, 2025: "It's outrageous that digital games cost more than physical when they don't need printing and distributing!"
Nintendo: literally makes physical more expensive than digital.
People after April 2nd, 2025: a thread like this one every ten minutes or so.

I thought it was Activision and EA that went first?
Edit: Oh it was 2K.

All the big publishers will follow. Vote with your wallet!
I appreciate people trying to voice their displeasure wherever they can. The unfortunate part is that the majority will still consume, so I don't think there's anything holding this back.

Where is this $90 Mario kart world at? I still haven't seen a ligit US ad saying it's $89.99 yet.

What is certain is that I would never forgive Jim Ryan or the inept Hulst for what happened at Japan Studio... that's clear.

This shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

Nintendo operates in a segment of their own with virtually 0 competition.

Both Nintendo and Sony just had their most profitable gens ever.
Sony is definitely not having their most profitable gen right now:

And you remember the Insomniac leak. The margins on the actual games is low af.

And, not making excuses for Nintendo, but the gen before was a cataclysmic, existential failure. They're not trying to just get by anymore, no one is. The games market has matured.
This is just greed. And it's going to blow up in their face when no one but the rich buy Mario kart World. 65 million. I dont think it clears 10 million in the first year. Quote me.
I'll hold you to that. I think it does somewhere between 10 and 15 million. It has been 8 years for MK8D to be fair thought.

Also, Nintendo devs in Japan dont cost nearly as much as Sony, MS, EA and Acitvision devs on the west coast.
True, which is why I said that it comes down to demand for Nintendo. 65 million at ~60 per copy indicates HUGE demand. This is the first actually new Mario Kart in 11 years. They think it's justified, and they're probably right as far as what the market will bear.

But don't forget when everyone was clapping like seals when Nintendo raised their employee's salaries a couple years back. No one should've thought that was never going to get passed onto consumers. And Nintendo is apparently one of the higher paying companies in Japan.

We definitely still have to see. I expect the extremely hardcore fanbase to show up for Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World, but this isn't exactly looking appealing to the casual market the same way Nintendo Switch and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were 8 years ago.

I would like to know the budget of first party Nintendo games.
I doubt they cost half as much as TLoU, Spiderman, Halo, Forza etc

In fact, i wouldn't be surprised if only the car licenses of Forza cover the costs of 2 years of development for Mario Kart.
