All the hype is based off 80+ chapters of the manga. Not really fair to compare that peak to the anime, which has only adapted 8 chapters so far.

Not even the manga warrants it's hype, it still has yet to have break out arc, most notable shounen had 1 or two at least by now.

Boku no hero is a solid shounen but it doesn't do much at all to differentiate it self from it's peers, it's a standard shounen thats a lot like a weaker part 1 naruto. it's good a lot of the time but it's never great.

The anime adaptation so far has been alright, strong art, ok animation okay directing that most doesn't hit the sad moments but has at least 1 highlight character moment an episode.

What doesn't help is with it's 13 episode count it's going to be long over before anything interesting happens.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
Right, to qualify my position with the supporting cast, this show doesn't live in a vacuum. While Deku can be annoying as shonen protagonists tend to be at times, he is not strong enough to carry this series by himself. To go back to the One Piece example, MHA has its Luffy but doesn't have its Zoro or Nami or Usopp yet and the absence is glaring.

Anyway, my biggest problem with this show is, well, the hype. Its production is wonderful as Studio BONES is noted for, the music is good, everything is operating on a very consistent level. Yet when I see posts spouting off infinite hype over a series that has done little to earn such praise I take that into consideration. I may have said this before but it still holds true, MHA really hasn't notched above say Ushio and Tora or Assassination Classroom at this point.

It's not hype for the future.
Hype is the feeling the early episodes of this show give. Pure, unbrindled hype.

i don't read enough shonen to make good value judgements on that metric, but boku no hero has sustained my interest and that's better than I can say for a lot of crap I churn through

MHA gives me that feeling of being a kid again getting excited over superheroes again. They were admirable in a way modern protagonists often aren't.

Wins for me by that metric alone.

I have trouble believing a gifted student could just whip out a knife and point it at a student even if it was just to scare him in Japan without some heavy consequences. That's pretty much the equivalent of what Bakugou does when he's being watched, and much worse when he isn't.

In a way the quirks are also seen as part of the person and not just a weapon. That teacher seemed kind of nonchalant anyway.

How the teacher sees Bakugou's using his quirk on Deku's desk: "He just got excited"

Yeah, this argument becomes even worse when you consider one piece doesn't get any good until arlong park, and that's like 50+ anime episodes.

Biased dude is biased.

This is kind of what I am saying, people are spouting off about infinite hype and something special and MHA just isn't at that level thus far. As far the supporting cast argument goes, I will admit that I had different expectation based off a static cast though now that I know what rules this series is playing by it is much less of an issue. That being said Ochako and Bakugō need some seasoning. I would presume that happens, I am just not sure it happens this season.
Pacing is less the issue as it been on the slow side but nothing unmanageable rather than episode count since we about half way done with the cour and while I can't day fuck all has happened, I would be hard pressed to remember a good chuck of this series 6 months down the line.

Umm...no. One Piece manga gets good pretty early for me. The very first Buggy Pirates fight was the reason I stick with the series.

Shard, it really depends on whether you like Deku and his struggle to to achieve his dream. That's where all the hype comes from. Deku and his struggles are personally relatable to us.

If that's not a thing for you, just drop the series. I can't imagine you ever enjoying it. It's derailing the thread.

As I've said before at this point in the manga/anime I was hyped based upon the potential for the series to be special in the same way 6 episodes into something like One Piece or Hunter x Hunter I was hyped for something that appeared to be building towards something special. The only series I can specifically name that point of potential to confirmed special is in One Piece the walk to Arlong Park which was episode 47 of the series. Again all the discussion and complaints about MHA's anime adaptation and its pacing really comes down to the fact we know we're only getting 13 episodes this season with no idea when/if a second season will premiere. If MHA either had an ?? Number of episodes or was a 50+ episode run I doubt people would be freaking out that 6 episodes in all this amazing hype from the manga fans hadn't paid off yet. In context of this season compare MHA to the other major new shonen adaptation Twin Star Exorcist, TSE has less manga to adapt and is adapting the series as a snail pace compared to MHA, yet the series is mostly getting a lot of "better then I was expecting" from people despite nothing really happening yet because it has that 50 episode run. In the future if/when MHA has its own 50+ episode run between miltiple seasons I doubt future Shard's won't get as frustrate at this point in the series since they'll be at 6/50 and not 6/13.

You also can't get too upset with Shard about being negative towards something since he always looks at things with an overly critical eye its how he rolls. It'd be like getting upset at DTL because he finds the beautiful friendship between boys in every series he watches.

Deku has potential as does his dream, however expectations were raised and hopes have been dashed. Also, yea, I am not done with this show but I am done with this thread.

The difference is that no one had any expectations to begin with for the Twin Star Exorcists anime based on studio, staff and episode count. It's not hard to surpass nothing.
(That said the Twin Star Exorcists anime is surprisingly competent and enjoyable all things considered but it's nothing outstanding.)

But yeah, MHA is mostly suffering from hype backlash and preemptive worrying based on the announced episode count.

To add on that, it would solve most things if people would just think of MHA as a longer running show as well. Because there is literally no way this is not getting more seasons. It's not going to be over for good after 13 episodes, folks.

What still throws me off is your mention of Zoro, Nami, and Ussop. I can understand being critical of certain aspects, and the MHA Anime has some serious pacing issue, but that comparison doesn't make any sense.

Deku is the main character

All 'Merica Might - is a super character. His continued appearance in the show as a motivating factor for Deku as well as his interactions with him don't have a direct comparison with One Piece or most other Shounen. Luffy looked up to Shanks, but for most of the series only appeared in sparse flashbacks. Naruto might spend a lot of time hanging out with Kakashi as his teacher, but he had no effect like All Might on why Naruto wanted to become a Ninja. Iruka kind of matches as a supportive force before he graduates, but still not the same level of influence as All Might

Bakugou is certainly not supposed to be likeable, unless you are DTL

Iida is supposed to appear as an unlikeable uptight guy that ends up being an alright classmate and friend to Deku. He has his own faults that is seen during the entrance exam.

Uraraka - A really nice cheerful girl. A person Deku needs for support and she will need him too.

Then you have the rest of the class that you don't know their quirks and personalities.

You also have a teacher in Home Teacher Aizawa, who you could think of as a Kakashi, a teacher that seems mean at first but actually cares for his students.

I think you are having a case of the time released blues whereas you probably started One Piece with a huge number of episodes or chapters available to speed through.

Let's go through the first six episodes of One Piece.

Episode 1

The series begins with an attack on a cruise ship at the hands of Alvida. Coby, a slave of Alvida, discovers a barrel. One of Alvida's pirates attempts to open the barrel, but a young boy emerges and accidentally hits him. The remaining pirates attack him, but the stranger stops them and says that his name is Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy drags Coby to the storage cellar of the ship, where he eats and converses with Coby, who reveals his dream of being a marine. Alvida confronts Luffy, but he escapes and knocks her pirate crew down with his Devil Fruit power. Luffy explains that he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, therefore he has the powers of rubber. Coby, inspired by Luffy, stands up for himself when Alvida confronts them. Luffy uses his Gum-Gum Pistol technique on Alvida. Luffy and Coby sail away in a "borrowed" boat from Alvida's crew. Luffy asks about the pirate hunter Coby mentioned earlier. Coby says that he was captured by the Marines, and Luffy announces his intention of asking him to join his crew.

We are introduced to Luffy and Coby. Setting us up to meet Zoro in the next episode

Episode 2

Luffy and Coby arrive at an island with a large Marine base, where Luffy discovers the swordsman, Roronoa Zoro tied to a pole. Rika, a young girl, offers Zoro some rice balls that she made herself. Helmeppo, the son of Marine Captain Morgan, discovers this and has Rika thrown out. Luffy asks Zoro to join his crew, but Zoro refuses and has Luffy give him the rice balls. Luffy and Coby meet Rika in town, who is happy to hear that Zoro enjoyed the rice balls. She tells them how Helmeppo brought his vicious pet dog into their bar and that Zoro knocked it out to protect everyone inside. He then made a deal with Helmeppo: if he can survive being tied to a pole with no food or water for thirty days, then Helmeppo will spare the people in the bar. However, Helmeppo says that he will execute Zoro the next day despite his word. Luffy punches him, and Helmeppo runs off to tell his father. While Luffy invades the Navy base to find Zoro's swords, Coby attempts to untie Zoro and explains the situation to him. Morgan orders that they are both to be executed. The soldiers open fire, however, before the bullets can reach them, Luffy leaps from the base and uses his rubber body to block the bullets.

We are introduced to Zoro. He is shown to be a honorable person. Episode ends before conflict is resolved.

Episode 3

Luffy hands the three swords to Zoro in exchange for Zoro joining his crew. Luffy and Morgan engage in battle. All of Morgan's attacks miss and Luffy knocks Morgan to the ground. Meanwhile, Helmeppo takes Coby hostage. But Coby declares that he will not stand in the way of Luffy's dream, even if it means death. Luffy strikes Helmeppo, while Zoro takes out Morgan right before he can kill Luffy. As Morgan collapses, the Marines toss their weapons into the air in celebration of their captain's defeat. Later, Luffy, Zoro, and Coby are in the town restaurant with Rika and her mom. Marines step into the restaurant, and as Luffy and Zoro are pirates, they must leave the island immediately. Luffy and Zoro get ready to go, and the head of the Marines asks if Coby is with them. Luffy goes on to explain that Coby spent time aboard Alvida's pirate ship as her slave, and this makes Coby angry as it will ruin his chances of enrolling in the Marines. Coby punches Luffy. The Marines see Coby is not with them, and so order Luffy and Zoro to leave. As they do, Coby asks to join the Marines, and is accepted. Outside, Luffy and Zoro climb into their boat, and as they set sail, the Marines salute them for saving the town, including Coby. Coby vows to meet Luffy again, as a Marine meeting a pirate.

Zoro joins Luffy's crew. Coby leaves

Episode 4

In a flashback, a seven-year-old Luffy sits in a bar filled with the pirate crew of the "Red-Haired" Shanks, begging him to take him out to sea. But the pirate captain refuses. A bandit named Higuma enters and orders several barrels of booze. Shanks offers him the last bottle but Higuma smashes it and humiliates Shanks. After the bandit leaves the bar, all of the pirates start to laugh. Luffy gets angry that Shanks did not fight back and in a huff eats a purple fruit lying on the bar. Shanks notices this and tries to make Luffy spit it out, but it was too late. Shanks tells Luffy that he just ate the Gum Gum Fruit, a Devil Fruit, and now he is a rubber man and won't be able to ever swim again. Later, Luffy gets attacked by Higuma and his bandits. He is about to be killed, when Shanks and his crew arrive and effortlessly defeat Higuma's men. Frightened, Higuma throws down a smoke bomb and makes his escape, taking Luffy with him. He flees out to sea in a boat. There he throws the non-swimmer into the water. As Higuma laughs at Luffy's plight, a Sea King appears behind him and devours him whole. The sea monster then goes for Luffy, but Shanks stops the sea monster as it takes a bite, and with one look, drives the beast away. Luffy clutches Shanks and starts crying, since Shanks' arm was bitten off by the creature. Shanks replies that it is fine, as long as Luffy is safe. As the pirates get ready to leave, Luffy decides he will become a pirate on his own, that he will gather a crew that will beat Shanks', and that he will become King of the Pirates. Shanks gives his straw hat to Luffy and tells him to return it some day, as a great pirate. Back in the present, Luffy slingshots into the sky to catch a bird. Instead he is caught himself. Zoro, now alone in their boat, tries to keep up, paddling. On his way he picks up three castaways from Buggy's crew. The bird, carrying Luffy flies over a town, where it is shot down by Buggy's men. Luffy falls down and lands right in front of Nami, who is running away from Buggy's crew for stealing their precious map to the Grand Line.

Flashback episode. Shows Luffy's interactions with Shanks, how Luffy got his power, and the start of Luffy's dream to become King of the Pirates. At the very end Nami is introduced.

Episode 5

Nami pretends that Luffy is her boss, using the distraction to escape from Buggy's men. After Luffy beats them, she asks him to join her. Then Luffy finds out that she is a navigator, and asks her to join his crew of pirates. As she hates pirates, she refuses. Then she tricks Luffy into letting himself be tied up and brought to Buggy, where he is locked up in a small cage, while Nami fakes joining Buggy's crew. As proof of loyalty, Buggy demands of Nami to kill Luffy, but she cannot bring herself to do it. As Buggy's pirates attack her, Zoro arrives to save his captain and her. Buggy recognizes Zoro as the pirate hunter and attacks him. Zoro cuts Buggy into pieces. Believing Buggy to be dead, he sheaths his swords and is stabbed in the back. The wound puts Zoro at a disadvantage. He picks up the cage with Luffy inside and the three escape.

While Nami develops into a great character, at this point all we see is a character that doesn't seem trustworthy.

Episode 6

Still trapped in the cage, Luffy meets a small dog guarding his master's store, despite knowing that his owner is dead. Mohji the Beast Tamer's lion, Ritchie, inadvertently breaks Luffy's cage open, and sends him flying. The dog tries to protect the store, but is no match for the much stronger Ritchie, and Mohji burns the store down. Angered by Mohji destroying what the dog finds precious, Luffy mercilessly punches him out. Moved by Luffy's concern for the dog, Nami agrees to work with Luffy for the time being.

Those six episodes where not much exposition was done on the characters nor much happened in the plot, yet this is the same amount of time we have had exposure with My Hero Academia. In this time we have had Deku's motivations and hard work shown, All Might's influence on Deku as well as his continued mentoring of him and now the other students, a seemingly non-complex character (like Luffy), but an asshole in Bakugou, the seemingly female lead in Uraraka as a moral support for Deku, a friend in Iida, and a teacher that seems hard as nails but actually cares about his students in Aizawa. Then you have the rest of the class that has been minorly introduced at this point but will surely get more screentime and focus in the future.

Let me put it this way, Deku's mom has had as much focus on her as half of the one piece cast at this point.

I'm confused. Deku had to train his body to become a worthy vessel for One for All. How is All Might's scrawny ass body capable of utilizing the quirk to its fullest?

Something Something Something you know how a guy flexes at the pool? Something Something.

Edit:

Real Answer: He's gotten weaker looking because the injury he received years ago that forced many surgeries and organs removed. Deku would not have been able to handle the power outright when given it. All Might had the power inside him already before he got weaker and is accustomed to how it works.

Yeah, All Might use to look how All Might do always. The injury he received along with the surgeries left him as a shadow of his former self. He can flex for a few hours a day to give off the appearance and strength. If he goes overboard then he starts coughing up blood and the like.

All Might can also regulate how much of One for All he's using, unlike Deku at the moment. ...which means, yeah, that weather changing punch was a fraction of the full power of One for All.

One for All changes physique when activated, like how Deku's arm bursts through his clothes. All Might exploits that even more.

On the subject of critiquing a series, I personally watch the entire first season of any given show to determine whether or not I like it. I don't rely on the "judge a series by the first two episodes," because it doesn't give the show an opportunity to fully flesh out its premise.

....which is probably why the first two episodes of a bunch of series have a "what the fuck?!" moment. Ichigo getting stabbed to death. Luffy popping out of a barrel. Yusuke getting hit by a car. Nappa kidnapping Gohan. Simon and Kamina seeing daylight when that monster break through the floor.

agreed, but even then, the anime is sooooooooo fucking badly paced it's a wonder anybody watches it

Boku no hero's anime is 13 episode adapation of a manga which has 90 chapters worth of source material but has the same 1:1 chapter paceing of 700+ episode long shounen, well the first two episode both coverd half a chapter.

One piece starts off good, arlong park isn't the point it becomes good but the point it becomes something special, it marks the first time the crew Luffy was building really comes together in a climax to but an end to the nightmarish life one of there own Nami & her village where living in under the occupying force of the Arlong pirates.

the Op anime managed to stay in top 10 most highest rated tv anime for past 17 years thanks to it's line up of strong episode directors, exciting source material, wonderful vocal performance by the voice cast and endless epic momments.

Personally myself I like Boku no hero anime I think it's an alright adapation, episode 2 still the best to me, but I don't think it's anywhere as good as hype is make it out to be, it's not good enough to mention in the same sentence as HXH, one piece or hajime no ippo.it's not even the best new shounen cause world trigger shits on it from a great hight.

hey at least it's not magi anime level disaster.

Sorry, i like OP a lot (see my avatar) but it really doesn't start good. It's a shore until Arlong Park. This thing really warrants the hype, specially the manga, when one piece has become static, formulaic and has devolved a lot in the last few years from what actually made it great. That's not even talking about the anime, which is insufferable with the amount of filler, horrible animation and art that's become a lot less charming than before.

MHA anime pace is good. It feels slow to manga readers but it doesn't need to be rushed, and they've nailed almost every single big moment since the beginning.

I like One Piece a lot, bu yeah, its anime is horrible garbage. Especially compared to the skill with which the manga is drawn.

Let's calm down here modern op is Toei being Toei most of the time but early OP was fine with good pacing and consistent animation for a long running shonen. OP went from good with potential to special at Arlong but it was still very enjoyable before that.

Eh early One Piece was fine but it was just fine, nothing noteworthy, I feel until a few arcs in. I'm not sure if I would say necessarily if Arlong Park was the turning point, its been like a decade since I saw early One Piece for the first time so its a bit hard for me to remember exactly how I felt, but the show absolutely didn't hit the ground running. Not for me and not for a lot of people. As someone who has watched/read early Bleach/OP/Naruto and MHA, I think MHA might have the most solid start and the manga is doing some really good things right now. We will see if it reaches the highs some of the giants in the genre have reached though.

As a side note, some of these comparisons in here are interesting to read since its super obvious that people in here haven't all read/watched the same amount of material of the properties they are comparing. Knowledge of future events 100% colors how one views past events and in turn will color comparisons if its done between "I've seen all of this" and only seen part of this even if relatively equivalent parts are being compared. I suppose its unavoidable though.

Why is bakugou such an asshole? Dude isn't likeable at all. I'm constantly rooting against him.

Kaminari had a line and Kirishima had all the lines, and he spoke on Bakugou so much and he smiles in the preview. I never knew Kirishima had this much focus this early.

The writing was kind of weak this episode
though Im glad Midoriya didnt beat him one on one, one of the things I hate is when writers do that, make the person who just got powers triumph over those who are naturally awesome. What was wrong was the outcome with weak Uraraka somehow managing to pull a win, and Midoriya tricking Bakugou like that. I wanted Bakugou team to win.

Oh well at least everyone finally acknowledges how cool, talented, and awesome Bakugou really is. He needs even more love.

Oh wow I really liked how they animated Deku's upward SMASH with the windows breaking and all. Probably my favourite episode along with #2.

Also I know everyone hates Kacchan but I still find really cool! I love all his angry faces

So good.
I loved the fight and how everyone is starting to realize that Kacchan is just a little shit with an ego bigger then a mountain.
Deku und Urarakas teamwork was on point and so were his strategies. The final Smash was seriously hype.

That upwards smash was legit. Bakugou using his brain to outmanoeuvre Deku was pretty sweet as well. I hated him at the start but he's really grown on me the last 2 episodes, plus his quirk is ace.
