My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 4 |OT| Twilight Princess Returns

The full synopsis for "Bats!" has been released:

“Bats!” — When Applejack’s beautiful orchard falls under attack on Apple Bucking Day, it is clear that the dreaded Vampire Fruitbats have returned and Applejack is ready to take drastic measures to protect the orchard. However, the always compassionate Fluttershy argues for a more humane plan, which causes conflict between the two and could cost them their friendship, on “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic,” Saturday, December 28 at 10:30 a.m. ET/ 7:30 a.m. PT on the Hub Network.

It would appear this is Merriweather episode. I certainly don't share the general disdain for her work, but like Polsky, I get a little nervous when I hear she's writing an episode. That said, she does have several episodes I legitimately do like: Hearth's Warming Eve, Putting Your Hoof Down and Wonderbolt Academy. But she has also written two of my least favorite episodes of the whole show: Dragon Quest (the worst) and Mare Do-well. The premise of this episode sounds really good: pragmatism vs. idealism. I just hope Merriweather doesn't write AJ to be a complete jerk and presents her point-of-view fairly and with understanding. Poor AJ gets bashed enough without having "inhumane monster" added to the list.

Still leaves room for vampire Applebloom!

Do you hate spoiler tags that much that you actually removed them before quoting :S?
They weren't necessary, so they weren't applied. If we aren't using spoiler tags with the assumption that it stops people from reading what's tagged, then why have them at all?

Umm they were applied, but you actually went ahead and removed them from other people's posts. That's just low man.

It was a passage for which my post was responding to. If you don't read the quote, then my post makes no sense. I want my post to make sense, so I provided the necessary background in the form most suitable. As the author of my own posts, I am at liberty to make such decisions when quoting.

It's also against established thread rules. I'm not the only one saying not to spoiler tag bland non-informative episode promos.

Fair enough. It doesn't concern me that much since I read the spoiler tagged text anyway. Just being considerate.

It's funny how you frame this in terms of you being "considerate" when in fact such consideration wasn't called for in the first place. While you're patting yourself on the back, take the time to consider the damage such "consideration" imposes on the ability of people to actually be social, openly discuss matters on the internet, and not be an ever-shrinking enclave of fans mostly obsessed with rules and regulations.

I'd agree with all of that, particularly regarding Merriweather. Fingers crossed "Bats!" is more like "Putting Your Hoof Down" and less like "Spike At Your Service".

My mistake, force of habit. Last thing we need is another long debate on spoiler policy.

EDIT: Episode 10 title confirmed: "Rainbow Falls"

That episode sounds like an idea I had with Fluttershy... so I look forward to it.then agai... Merriwhether. I am iffy

To those saying AJ is racist? No shit. At least she doesn't hide behind style and backhoof comments! ;p

Hope the manehattan episode shows a lot of Manehattan (more than in the original epsiode that was future I mean) having fun with New York visual gags a galore. Makes the background really fun and interesting to watch.
I'm looking forward to what they'll do with the background music for this episode. Would love to hear something Gershwin-esque even though it would be uncharacteristic for the series.
Plus, I need my Kazumi Evans fix (although this is amusing me plenty for right now).

Well hopefully it'll be like Sweet & Elite. Up until then, Canterlot was just the keep, the shots we saw before didn't give it room for a city.

Gee, I wonder if Rainbow Dash will remain loyal to her friends or to these unknown pegasi we've never seen before... <yawn>

Gah, more synopses! (Let me know if I'm overdoing it y'all).

Pinkie Apple Pie

Pinkie makes an astonishing discovery that may link the Pie family to the Apple clan, and no one is more excited than Pinkie to hop on the Apple wagon to find the pony who will know for sure. Along the way they must learn to appreciate each other’s strengths and faults to find out what really makes a family, on “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic,” Saturday, January 11 at 10:30 a.m. ET/ 7:30 a.m. PT on the Hub Network.

Rarity Takes Manehattan

Rarity is thrilled to be heading to Manehattan for an important fashion show and brings all of her friends along for a high-class adventure in the city she loves. But when another designer ruins Rarity’s chances at winning the competition, she turns to the rest of the Mane Six for help, not realizing that her anger and ambition are damaging her friendships, on “My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic,” Saturday, January 4 at 10:30 a.m. ET/ 7:30 a.m. PT on the Hub Network.

These both sound really good to me. "Bats!" too.

Not really feeling the Rainbow Falls synopsis. But I think there are a few ways it could work. She is from Cloudsdale, her family may still live there. There is no indication that she has other Pegasi friends in Ponyville other than Fluttershy, who is almost certainly not competing. It would be like Hockey Players playing for their home country, rather than host country in the Olympics.

Mmm, it'll be interesting to see how that one works out. The core idea isn't particularly groundbreaking, but if they can do some interesting things with the characters and the resulting drama (as you've suggested) it might turn out to be a bit of a sleeper. I hope so.

Isn't that exactly what happens, though? Pretty sure that's what happened with Alexander Ovechkin. Russian man, plays for the Washington Capitals normally, played for Russia in the 2006 and 2010 Olympics.

I think he meant if Ovechkin played for Team USA despite being Russian since he's employed by a US team.

Maneiac was a fantastically campy villain. It was great.

Rarity was best superhero.

Flutterhulk is going to result in some very disturbing fanart...

I was surprised that Twilight seemed to have the most trouble getting the hang of her powers (other than Fluttershy having trouble getting angry), even though she has already been known to do quite a bit of zapping with her horn. Pinkie, of course, was a natural.

I was expecting a more mysterious explanation for the comic book (Spike having set it on some kind of magic stand, for instance), so I was a bit disappointed in that aspect.

The whole "useless sidekick gets his moment of glory" plot device was also overplayed and utterly predictable - especially since we all already know that Spike, even being a sidekick, is definitely not useless, as we've seen in several occasions.

So, yeah, those two aspects did irk me a bit, but it was still a delightful experience, in my opinion.

I expected a campy, silly, stupid, fun superhero parody with ponies... and that's pretty much what I got. I liked it.

Apart from the overplaying of the "The sidekick is useless!" foreshadowing that Spike would totally save the day, it was good fun. Pinkie Pie as Fillysecond was a natural fit, though. Pinkie with superspeed is just a perfect match.

I definitely enjoyed the episode. Surprised it took as long as it did to get into the comic book world.

And yes, Rarity was the best superhero.

Ditto. It was the episode I was looking forward to the most, and I wasn't disappointed. It was corny and predictable, but that was part of the fun.

Though Twilight seeming to have the most trouble with her powers was kinda odd. Given that's practically a superhero by this point anyway. I guess the comic book world replaced her normal magic with her superhero powers or something? Or maybe just a case of Twilight breaks half the plots she's in if she remembers how magically overpowered she is.

And yes, Rarity was the best superhero.
Yes, yes she was. Functional accessories indeed.

Enjoyed that more than I thought I would. Nice diversion from the regular stuff, and a lot of fun in general.

Rarity definitely got the best moments this episode, she seemed to be having a fantastic time. The "useless Spike" stuff reminded me a little of "Spike at Your Service" (not a good thing), but only a little. Loved the stylist hench-ponies, and Maneiac was fun too.

For an episode of this kind, I can't really think of much to complain about. Three writers too, seemingly, which is unusual.

I think I enjoyed the visual look of this week's episode more than just about anything else.
Not only the costume/superpower design but just the way certain scenes were animated.
Loved the animation distortion as Spike & the ponies were getting sucked into the comic book.

So we have a parody of Joker/Doc Octopus, Robin, the Flash, Storm, Hulk, Green Lantern Star Sapphire, Wonder Woman/Miss Marvel...
and Twilight is a useless random ice hero? Come on!
Would have been funny as a Superman or Batman parody. Maybe even use Mare-Do-Well again as it was a Batman parody already. Maybe even Ironman. Really boring what they did with her.

The rest of characters were funny as hell though, amazing epesode. Love Pinkie, Rarity and Fluttershy. Rarity was above all as Green Lantern, fantastic use of powers by her and totally suit her.

Also the animation and design were fantastic this week. Loved the city. We need non pony fantasy episodes here and there I think, some more sci fi would be cool. Hope the Manehattan episode also plays a lot visually with the city design.
