I am ready for MLP: Friendship is Magic's Jurassic Bark equivalent.
Blow me away DHX Media. I wish to shed tears. NOT liquid pride but actual tears.

The answer to whether or not Scootaloo can fly is a definitive, absolute "maybe".

Well, they did heavily imply they just haven't grown in yet. So Scootabuse is defeated... for now.

Looks like DrForester lost his bet. Scoot is still wingspan-deficient.
Still a fun ep even though Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon were extra typecast this week.
I'd like to see some depth from our antagonist fillies at some point.
I enjoyed DT's Jay Jonah Jameson impression in Ponyville Confidential quite a bit.

How the heck did Scootaloo not get a cutie mark for scootering from Ponyville to the Crystal Empire with two ponies in tow... in ONE day?

I guess she's still comically missing the point. All it would have taken to push her over the edge and earn her mark would have been realizing just how crazy-awesome she is at scootering and that she actually likes it.

Ah, well, it's what the Crusaders do. Get really close to an epiphany, and then swerving at the last second. The camera zoom on Scootaloo's flank was a mean tease, though. I thought for sure she'd get it there.

Episode heavily implied that she would fly someday. She flew a few times in this episode, and just sucked at it. Her "what if they never grow" thing seemed more just kids being scared and not thinking things will come.

She also very clearly said that her wings can't get her off the ground. If it was that certain that she will eventually fly, Rainbow Dash would just have said that to her, and she did not. So, if anything, the implication goes the other way.

She's an emancipated filly? When did she divorce her parents...and more importantly...why?

Maybe they abandoned her because...because she couldn't fly...

Rainbow Dash was emphasizing that flying is not what defines her or makes her special. We already know that ponies with tiny wings can go on to join the Wonderbolts.

That can obviously be interpreted as psychologically preparing Scootaloo for the worst.

That being said, it is my opinion that nopony knows why Scootaloo's wings are not yet able to sustain flight, or if they will ever be. However, it seems rare enough to be considered an abnormality among pegasi - just as the CMC not having cutie marks at their age is rare among ponies in general. Everypony was fast to tell them that they WOULD eventually get cutie marks, though. There's something different here.

Well, until the show says she's disabled, she isn't They made a turtle fly. They have a giant Pegasus with wings as small as Scootaloo. They even gave a unicorn wings with magic.

Also, way to go episode. That's some good fanon being taken out.

Eh wasn't that good.

And not about the flying thing , even though the lesson being ruined due to context was a thing. And I was 5 once watching TV and can tell you not only do they notice it, it actively pisses them off, for me it was pokemon. So with the theme failing to move, i guess the show would have to rely on its comedy, and the wasn't that funny ,so... yeah. Events on the TV i guess.

I'm not upset, she might fly later no biggie. But the episode wasn't very good, I didn't like the pinky clone thing at its core either, but at least there was entertainment there.

___

However this does remind me of something that would make me upset that foust touched on a while back. "homeostasis" she spoke of a desire for the characters to .. have goals and reach them. The show is only so far in, so eh, but I hope the characters actually get to be things, or at least other sailor scouts. In stead of twilight background dancers.

I don't why this episode reminded me of that, but yeah. I hope some others get their own "princess transformation".

Its one of the reasons i appreciate super hero animations, despite their origins being kings of homeostasis, their animated counterparts do get to become things.
____

That is the most thought I have put in an episode so i will give it that.

Its usually just "Luna the EdgeHog is the best", which she is.

That be great if magic didn't exist.

" i know we are magic and I personally Rainbow Dash know super powerful magic ponies that could explore other dimensions and can teleport matter to far distances and and completely transform it into something else like alchemy. And To those ponies, the restructuring of bones to provide proper growth would be ain't no thang, but fuck it"

And as for the abnormality thing, that would be great , if magic didn't exist. Unless there is magic making not able to fly, that would be interesting.

Tuns out scoots got this on her back.

It is now canon.

Turns out we have been boombazzeled, this is actually a naruto anime.

I liked the episode. I'm purely looking at it from a canon viewpoint. We know that Scoots hasn't flown yet, more or less glided at best. This episode avoided the question on whether she can or can't fly by saying "Who knows?", and really, that was the best way to go about it. She's still young, she still has a lot of time to grow and learn. It wasn't whether she could fly that mattered, it was that she could be herself.

Leason: Don't take others expectations for you as fact. You are the one that defines yourself, not anybody else.

...Something I need to take to heart.

I like all ponies equally. Some more equally than others. But nobody gets hated or left behind.

Sure thing, Napoleon! ;p (please get that reference)

Rainbow Dash was emphasizing that flying is not what defines her or makes her special. We already know that ponies with tiny wings can go on to join the Wonderbolts.

In theory.. but I hardly care either way to argue.

Though I will say.. if she is disabled.. why the fuck would that be a bad thing? You are never guaranteed to be the best at something because you 'want it' You have to work at it, and yes, sometimes you fail.

I just don't get why it would be a big deal. She is, I don't care, because she can scoot faster than most. If she can... she can scoot and fly.

It's a magical world where turtles can fly. Unicorns can be magically given wings. Shoehorning a character as disabled in this world would be cruel and spiteful.

Scootaloo getting a dang scooter as a mark, or to have scooting as her thing would suck. Her thing is agility, dexterity, like Dash's is speed. So its a cute tease, but its obvious little Scoot is destined to be a filly of many talents.

That's definitely the one thing that's undoubtedly clear after this episode.

Even if she believed in her own scooter/pegasi hovercraft talents or not, the fact that she didn't get her cutie mark for that showcase today means she's cut out for something even more uniquely special.

What that is yet we cannot say... but simply magicking her wings into full-size ones would be a cheat. Can't get permanent cutie marks with a cheat. And it's not like Twilight was even able to simply give all of her friends pegasi wings in Sonic Rainboom (although she's arguably more powerful now) so that may be easier said than done.

Scoot's breasts simply haven't filled out yet. Plenty of young girls have anxiety about that.

Dat headcanon. Just because magic exists does not mean that everything can be solved with it. You don't know how magic works in Equestria, and the show will never explain it in detail, so making assumptions of how easy something like the "restructuring of bones to provide proper growth" would be is pure speculation on your part.

By your line of thinking, nothing bad can ever happen in Equestria and the mane 6 are never in any real danger because they (or Twi) can just use their magic to solve anything.

I don't see that we have much reason to think that most ponies have ready access to the sorts of magic that would help Scootaloo fly, long-term. Ponies get sick and, even when it's really important that they be healthy (Hurricane Fluttershy), there's no one on hand to cure them magically. There are hospitals and doctors that seem to do things in the usual way (Read it and Weep), with long recovery times and in-patient care for something as (presumably) easily fixable as broken bones. The cast often goes to Zecora when you'd expect them to go find a magic doctor pony, if such ponies existed. Granny Smith has all sorts of problems, including hearing loss.

Now, plausibly a wizard pony like Twilight can do basically anything, but it seems clear that ponies like that are extremely rare and are often pretty involved in running countries or saving the world. Scootaloo has connections and may be able to get help, but I find it hard to believe that there aren't a bunch of disabled ponies out there.

Welp, Hearts Strong as Horses is now officially stuck in my head. If this is the quality we can expect from this season's songs, we're in for quite a ride :)

I wasn't that impressed by the song - although I used to like that Scootaloo was tone-deaf and now she sings perfectly fine. It was still the best part of this week's episode, though.

I've had Apples to the Core stuck in my head since I first heard it this week. One of the best songs in the franchise, IMO.

I've been looking forward to Apples to the Core since I first saw the animatic, and yeah, I think it'll be one of the best songs the show has done. Certainly better than Hearts Strong as Horses, as good as I think that song is.

As for Scootaloo now singing fine, I guess it's just one of those weird things like Sweetie Belle murdering 99 Buckets of Oats in Sleepless in Ponyville when it seems like she's actually a very good singer elsewhere. Whatever suits the episode, I suppose.

I enjoyed that a lot. Not sure how good of an episode it actually was (outside of my own enjoyment), will need a rewatch where I'm not getting distracted by Scootadrama and new songs!

I trust the writers to not screw this up. Whichever direction they go in, I've got faith it'll be well-considered and executed.

Nailed it. I thought they did a great job with Scootaloo here, with a focus on being proud of her current talents without ruling out hope for future ones. Best possible outcome, really.

Thought "Hearts as Strong as Horses" was pretty great too; loved the orchestration particularly. Not sure about the repetition in the chorus, but like the "1, 2, 3, 4" in "Raise This Barn", I feel like that'll probably stop bothering me after a couple of re-listens.

Anyway, it felt like a solid debut for Ed Valentine. I'd definitely like to see more from him on the strength of this one.

It's that Rose he's with?

They KNOW.

Ha! Love it.

I quit watching this since S3 because the writing got a bit meh for me.

Is it worth catching up?

We're five episodes in, and I'd say S4 has been a marked improvement over S3.

I think this was the first weak episode of the season. It wasn't bad, but not great.

I enjoyed it quite a bit more than "Daring Don't" I think, though that's probably mostly down to the kind of episode it was. I've generally classed episodes as one of four types - Adventure, Event, Slice of Life and High-Concept.

For me, the High-Concept episodes (i.e. Too Many Pinkie Pies, Mysterious Mare-Do-Well, Daring Don't, the upcoming Power Ponies episode) tend to be the weakest, whereas the Slice episodes are usually my favourites.

I don't know if I am more happy he is with Rose or more happy he isn't with Derpy. Probably more happy he is with Rose.

Derpy fanon took another blow with them showing Dinky's real parents together on the train platform again.

It was an alright episode.
It shows that Scoots was capable of flying but it wasn't her time yet, and worrying about it too much wasn't going to improve it, especially during the contest.
Also, count me in as one of the many who hate Tiara and Spoon.

But I think the best part of all was Ms. Harshwhinny herself. I loved her expressions at the start of the episode, which looked a little odd at the time, her talk with Dash about "professionalism", and the ending.

Did not expect Miss Harshweeney to pop up and un-unexpectedly, she was harsh. Oh and boy did the animators have fun toying with her and RD. The song Heart Strong as Horses, that guitar twang and drumming and the CMC singing, love it! Montage was great to watch too. IMO, no step down in quality in S4 so far, twas another great episode. As long as we dont get an episode like spike at your service again, Im happy as a clam with any ep.

Oh and I approve

I loved that too, the string/pounding percussion stuff reminded me a lot of "Ballad of the Crystal Empire" from the S3 opener.

EDIT: Daniel Ingram is saying that the song was inspired by a classic Disney track, too. A lot of folks have singled out "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Mulan, but I noticed a few others had picked out "Strangers Like Me" from Tarzan, which I think might be even closer.

I'm sure it must be that one, a ton of people suggested it. Great choice on Dan's part.

There's never a bad time to watch Mulan or Tarzan again! Very underrated films.

where do you guys watch the episodes?

I'm not sure we're allowed to share direct links, but Equestria Daily posts up a variety of ways to watch, including legit sources like iTunes, Google Play and the Hub's website. Just head to the website and search "Episode Streams and Discussion".

Hearts as Strong as Horses was the first song we've had with Claire Corlett actually voicing Sweetie Belle's singing voice instead of Michelle Creber pulling double-duty, am I right?

There was a fullness to the harmonies in this song that some of the other CMC songs have lacked.
It also stood out when the song was briefly reprised in Scootaloo's previously unseen house.

Yup (though a few smart-arses have pointed out Sweetie's rendition of "99 Buckets of Oats on the Wall" in "Sleepless in Ponyville").

I thought the reprise was a really nice touch, incidentally. I also liked the way they managed to show Scoots' living arrangements while still avoiding giving away who her caregivers are. Sneaky writers/animators/showrunners.
