My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 4 |OT| Twilight Princess Returns

Spotted that first watch. But they made the rainbow one shimmer. Also wondering if the banner that had that rainbow flash meant anything.
I'm betting we'll get conspicuous rainbow shimmers/flashes in upcoming episodes complete with rainbow eye glimmers from the rest of the ponies as they resolve their internal crises of conscience with their chosen element.

We've already got an announced ep where RD questions her ability to remain loyal.
And another where Pinkie Pie questions her ability to make people laugh.
Eventually we'll have others where Fluttershy doubts her kindness, Applejack doubts her ability to be honest and Twilight questions her proficiency with magic.

And when they resolve their conflict?
Presto - random object gives off a rainbow gleam, their eyes shimmer with rainbow light and they receive some rainbow doodad from someone at the end of the episode.

Perhaps the 6 gift givers will all get together and have their own episode where they discover their own talents in order to save the Mane 6.
This merry crew will consist of Coco Pommel, Cheese Sandwich, Discord and others as they bumble their way through a merry adventure.

I thought this was a pretty good S1 or S2 episode, and the best of the last two seasons so far. The song wasn't great, but almost everything else worked very well. It does have some of the world-building issues of the last few seasons, as someone else noted - everything is extremely modern relative to another major city like Canterlot, there are telephones, etc.

Now, it would have been even better as an S1 or S2 episode, since the episode conspicuously fails to grapple with Twilight's Princess-hood. A lack of stares aside, there's a really egregious scene where an alicorn is begging for a taxi and absolutely nobody cares. What, is Manehattan not actually in Equestria and in some anti-royal former colony instead?

If it's any consolation, this is how I'd see people from Manhattan actually acting, even towards royalty. I did not have a good time when I went to new york.

After the moon incident. Celestia Jobbing and outsourcing her work to young crazy people and the a series of other hishaps. I would imagine certain area's of the world aren't to fond of the "gods" all they do is bring trouble, or though lack of foresight create it themselves.

Or it could have been a visual gag.

I like the first one better.

Yeah, Twilight being ignored was ridiculous. Even if you entertain the idea of ponies in Manehattan not caring about royalty or being ignorant of them, you would think that a pony who has both wings and a horn would garner some attention walking down the street.

I think it's blatantly obvious that some of these episodes were already well into production when Hasbro decided that they needed another princess to sell toys with, and the crew just couldn't be arsed/did not have the time and resources to retool them to take Twilight's new status into account. Maybe we'll see some improvement in the latter half of the season.

She's apparently not the only alicorn in town as seen here.

I'm thinking this might become a bit of a running theme with S4. Hopefully not, but I feel like maybe the attitude is that Twilight's new status could become a kind of magic bullet, so it's better to ignore it altogether.

It actually could've been quite funny in this episode with the taxi thing. We could've had a scene where Twilight politely tries to catch somepony's attention while the bustling city folk pass by without noticing her, until she eventually pulls rank with some of the Royal Canterlot Voice™. The following apologetic awkwardness (for both raising her voice and invoking her status) would've been very Twilight.

It's not like this is the first time they've done stuff like this - the show rarely seems to grapple with the notoriety the mane cast should have thanks to their actions. This is no more or no less incongruous than Rarity acting all ashamed of her country bumpkin, yet kingdom saving friends in sweet and elite, when really they should all be celebrities thanks to their actions.

But just how much would an average pony on the street actually know about the six ponies who have saved the kingdom a few times? How widely would their actions have been publicised and through what kind of channels? We know that Equestria has newspapers, but they don't seem to have televisions, for example, so it's not like average ponies would have had a lot of opportunities to see what the mane 6 actually look like, especially in a far-away city like Manehattan. Therefore I think it is actually plausible that the mane 6 would not be widely recognised, even if the average pony on the street is aware of their actions.

Twilight Sparkle, however, should be sticking out like sore thumb anywhere she goes, even if we assume that nobody actually recognises her, because of the simple fact that she is an alicorn; there's no hiding the horn and wings. Given how unique this is in Equestria, the fact that nobody gives her a second glance is ridiculous.

Why, exactly? This is a thread for discussing the show. We're discussing the show. Comments like yours do nothing but stifle what little discussion there is and discourage people from posting.

It's not like we're writing theses about what cartoon pony sweat smells and tastes like.
Because I think you're overthinking it. Overthinking things is fine in moderation (I suppose this instance is mostly harmless), but left unchecked can lead to questionable fanon like "Pinkie hates Spike" or "Scootaloo is an orphaned cripple" or ""Feeling Pinkie Keen" is about blind dogmatism". I dunno, it rubs me the wrong way.

We already know Twilight is uncomfortable getting all that "princess" attention from the season-opening two-parter, as I recall. She's probably downplaying the whole alicorn thing, as such. Hell, I frequently forget she even has those wings now.

...Well, I really liked this weeks episode. A really great showoff of Rarity's character, which is almost always enjoyable.

I like this new avatar. Sweetie Link :)

Rainbow Dash becomes redundant. :(
She's still go the Dash part all to herself. Nobody can take that away from her.
What shall we call her after her punk rocker makeover?
Rainbow Rainbow Dash?
Double Dash? If Twilight can borrow from a Nintendo franchise title after graduating to alicorn princess, why not RD as well?

And will other ponies still regard the Mane 6 as common riff-raff after they've been upgraded to Rainbow tier?

Does Spike get a rainbow upgrade or does he get left out like the Humdrum that he is?

What I wanna know is what are they going to need those new powers huge manes for, i.e. who the villain is going to be.

Also, news. Kinda. Episode title for S04E13 has been announced: "Simple Ways". No synopsis yet.
Sounds like an AJ episode to me.

Don't kid yourself; of course they will. The writers won't want to shut themselves off from the slice-of-everyday-life formula that's made the show so popular, and making the characters celebrities kind of tramples all over the "everyday" part of that. It's why they didn't have anyone paying special attention to Twilight in Manehattan.

The rainbow things been known for months guys and it's still all speculation if it will show up in the show.

My guess is that it's a quick temporary thing like the crystal ponies.

I don't see how acknowledging the mane 6's status would shut the writers off from the everyday slice-of-life stuff. I'm not asking for them to be some kind of huge celebrities, just for some acknowledgement. Also, the fact that nobody paid any special attention to Twilight in Manehattan and that she couldn't even get a cab for Rarity despite being an alicorn princess appointed by the local deity was extremely jarring, as pointed out by several people both here and other sites.

And the rainbow thing is most likely gonna be temporary anyway, so it won't have any effect on this issue.

EDIT:

In other news, more future episode titles have been revealed:

Season 4 Episode 14 - Filli Vanilli

Season 4 Episode 15 - Twilight Time

Season 4 Episode 16 - It Ain't Easy Being Breezies

I can think of plenty of anime series that employed slice-of-life storytelling techniques involving celebrities. Fame is not a disqualifier.

Interesting. Filli Vanilli - CMC episode? Sweetie Belle is kinda vanilla-coloured, and we've not had an episode centred on her in a while. Tenuous, I know.

No idea what the Breezies one could be.

The title could also reference Sweetie Belle's oft-referenced singing talents.

Perhaps some record producer hears her sing and wants to capitalize on her voice - but a "blank flank" without a cutie mark isn't commercial enough to catch on with the pony masses - so some other pony gets hired to lip sync to Sweetie's music and gets all of the acclaim.

That would be a great episode, but I'm afraid it's too meta to happen... Shame....

I just can't get used to your new avatar $200; I still keep hearing Dash when I read your posts.
