Well that episode was all kinds of amazingness.
Callback central and Twilight warped somepony's life 4 1/2 years ago and was able to make amends for it.

I'm curious as to whether we'll see any parallels between shut-in Moondancer and shut-in Dougverse Twilight.

I liked this episode a lot. I enjoyed the first part of the episode more than the stuff with Moondancer, but it was all good.

I was hoping for the episode to acknowledge that we've already seen Twilight's old friends around Ponyville, but suspecting it wouldn't. However, it did that and much more, giving an explanation for where everyone lives and even acknowledging that some of them were Cadance's bridesmaids. I love how unperceptive Twilight was revealed to be in this episode.

ED's poll on how old the pony versions of the characters are turned out to be oddly well timed. This felt exactly like a story of reuniting with high school friends years later after they all get careers, especially with Lemon Heart being an event planner for Canterlot Castle and the suggestion of Moondancer becoming a professor, which would put everyone in the equivalent of their early 20s at least. Of course, the truth is still "ambiguous mix of adult responsibilities and childish actions", but them being teens in Dougworld always felt off to me.

Moondancer being what Twilight would have been if she didn't go on her journey was interesting, and it was nice to see the story of Twilight encountering that sort of character (who isn't a supervillain) finally be done in the show. It was odd that they would do this just a few months away from the release of Equestria Girls: Friendship Games, since it seems to take some of the wind away from Dougworld Twilight's sails. With Twilight constantly fretting over the thought that her not going to Moondancer's party was what caused her to become a shut-in, I was hoping for it to not actually be the case and for Moondancer to tell Twilight to stop acting so self-important, but alas.

Holy shit, I just realized as I was typing this: Moondancer's sister coming out of nowhere at the end and making her seclusion feel super weird must have been a reference to Shining Armor's introduction!

It was odd that Twilight had completely forgotten about her old home, including not even thinking of raiding it to fill up the library in her castle, but eh.

When Twilight was talking about there only being one way to make up for her not attending Moondancer's party, I was thinking, "Oh dammit Twilight, don't even think of time traveling again!". Pinkie didn't even cross my mind. Speaking of which, I was hoping for Twilight to return to Ponyville at the end and discover that leaving without telling anyone caused a catastrophe there too, but her returning to fetch Pinkie unfortunately prevented that ending.

Loved this episode. I'm liking the tons of callbacks that have been happening this season.

Also, speaking of callbacks I noticed a certain someone from earlier in season 5 in one of the scenes: https://i.imgur.com/wgEHJsT.png

Holy shit. I'm glad that they're actually doing that with her.

Adulthood the episode, when you grow up and realise that all your childhood friends are either married, in jail or dead :p

Man, I don't even know where my childhood friends are. It's been 11 years since I graduated and that was in another state and I went to three different high schools. I never kept in touch with any of them.

Great episode. Loved how they acknowledged Lyra moving to Ponyville and Twi's friends being Cadance's bridesmaids (though it doesn't explain why Twi didn't recognise them back then...). The whole episode was basically another background pony episode while still focusing on Twi.

Considering how wound up Twi was back during Cadance's wedding about her being an imposter, I'd say it's plenty understandable.
She was very preoccupied and Twilight, as we know, has an especially one-track mind.

Two comics made right before the episode aired with the same plot as each other, and the second even managed to mostly predict a line.
Comic 1
Comic 2

Another alternate art style for PMVs to play around with, though I suppose it isn't super different from the cake decoration style (from "A Canterlot Wedding").

It was kind of disappointing how Twilight never jokingly pointed out how her Canterlot friends could have been the Elements of Harmony, followed by the others awkwardly laughing. Also, Moondancer being a palette swap of Twilight makes much more sense when you see how Lyra and Minuette are palette swaps, along with Lemon Heart and Twinkleshine.
Also, they went out of their way to make Twilight's magic aura the same color it was in season 1, which is a real surprise. Was Twilight's aura ever purple in flashbacks? Because if so, then we have a Klingon design situation, where they acknowledged the design change of Klingons between TOS and the movies on, but then also showed Klingons with their later design in stories set before TOS, so there had to be an awkward explanation.

Yet another fantastic episode. They're really killing it this season. The characterisation of Twi's old friends was really nice, and having Moondancer as arguably the second possible-future-Twilight (Sunset Shimmer being the first) was a cool angle. I liked how sensitively and honestly they depicted the effects of Twilight abandoning her too.

On a wider level, I'm really impressed at how complete of a world they're developing this season too. Seasons 1 to 4 perhaps did a better job of remaining cohesive than other comparable shows might, but this season is on another level. For example:

...not to mention, y'know, the entire premise of the episode. It seems like the writers/producers are putting a much greater focus on continuity and consistency now, which is really exciting for a big dork like me.

Twilight didn't even remember their names, you think she'd remember what they looked like? As for Cadance, she probably foalsat them as well, and unlike with Twilight, kept in touch with them all.

Larson masterfully retconed and explained why those ponies are often seen in both Ponyville and Canterlot, and that is just awesome!

Loved this episode: Minuette's personality, Twilight flew to Canterlot...twice, continuity and consistency with previous seasons, and how Moondancer basically represented what Twilight may have become if Celestia hadn't sent her to Ponyville.

Like it was mentioned, I loved how Larson was able to explain how those ponies are seen so often in Ponyville and Canterlot.

Lyra was supposedly a member of the friendship circle (though I don't think she went to Moondancer's party - unless I missed it, but this was never explained was it?) so I wonder if Twilight will get in touch with Lyra now. Lyra does live in Ponyville...

You say everything and a little more. Except for that Spike episode, this is a hell of a season so far.

Yup! For a moment there I was like "Uh oh, Lyra in Canterlot, how does that work?" But nope, all part of the plan.

You say everything and a little more. Except for that Spike episode, this is a hell of a season so far.

And for me, even Princess Spike was an OK-at-worst episode. Nothing in Season 5 has sunk to "bad" for me.

Yeah, the weak episodes for me were "Appleoosa's Most Wanted" and "Princess Spike", with the former being OK and the latter at least portraying Twilight in an adorable way and not making Spike as bad as in "Spike At Your Service". Season 5 is on track for being the best of the series, IMO.

spike should be the princess of friendship.
Maybe once he figures out how to keep a room quiet without destroying a city.

While not top-tier, I have enjoyed all of Spike's episodes, sans "Spike at your Service", and I can give that episode a pass after hearing how it was apparently rewritten late in the writing process.

That was quite a sweet and heart-warming episode. Very welled paced and enjoyable. I was glad she re-acquainted with her old friends.

If it weren't for the cafe scene where they explain the visiting, I'd almost swear Lyra was bolted on the episode at the last second. She's not at the party (travel time, but Pinkie pretty much spoiled that last episode), she's not mentioned the rest of the episode except for the group photo, where she sort of looks shoved in. Like that perhaps they hadn't decided initially to make her Twilight's old friend just because she appeared in the first episode, but changed their minds.

But that cafe scene may be too well done for a last-minute change...

If it makes you feel better, it looks like the Canterlot friends at least share some of Lyra's habits.

And on another note, the more I think about it, the more clear it is that Moondancer had a "senpai, please notice me" thing going on with Twilight... besides them being in the same class.

I wouldn't go that far. Moondancer had the most in common with Twilight. She seemed to regard her as her peer and equal in the science class flashback, not someone obsessed with her. She was the only one she really considered a friend because of what they had in common.

Hey guys, so I watched Season 4 as it aired, but I haven't watched an episode of this season. Sort of fell off MLP inbetween S4 and S5.

Still, is this season good? How does it compare thus far with previous seasons? Cause I thought Season 4 was great.

Season 5 is on track to becoming the best of the series. Season premiere that isn't an epic battle, Twilight consistently being portrayed as a princess with many responsibilities, only two weak episodes so far (with only one being bad, and even then not too bad), good moments for everyone, two callback-heavy episodes that both managed to work, lots of good looking food, etc.

My only complaint is that we haven't had enough Rarity this season.
This is like the only iconic moment I can recall from her in Season 5.

Actually that is what made Season 4's finale my favorite thus far. xD

Still, sounds good, probably will check it out before summers end.

Well, it's good as a change of pace. Anyway, Netflix will actually be putting up the first half of season 5 on July 30 instead of waiting for the season to end.

From the leaked episode list, we do know that episodes 14 and 16 at least will probably be Rarity episodes.

Pretty much what Sigma said. Popular opinion (among PonyGAF anyway) is that Season 5 is shaping up to be on-par with the best the show has to offer. Definitely give it a watch if you've enjoyed the show up til now.

Video form

EDIT: Just realized, with the revelation that Twilight can transport herself into books, there needs to be a scene where Twilight has to get to Canterlot quickly, and says, "Spike, mail me." Then she goes into a scroll, which Spike burns to send to Celestia.

I also wonder if she could use this method to get to Dougworld.

Ah right, with Sunset's book that inexplicably can send messages across dimensions. Would that be a way for Twilight to get into Dougworld as a pony? Or would she appear as a human drawing on the Sunset's side?

Anyway:
Now, the actual explanation for Dougworld Twilight having glasses is probably just her sitting in front of computer screens, but it occurs to me that this comic actually provides a dumb alternate explanation.

EDIT: Oh yeah, we haven't had any 4th of July art here yet

EDIT: I now want an episode where Twilight freaks out over trying to spend time with all of her friends, now that she has (re)added five to the roster. She'd view it like trying to use all of your units in Fire Emblem.

EDIT: New Deleted Scene. It bothers me more than it should that the punchline actually makes no sense, since the Twilight in the past knows about the original future and thus the original Twilight of that time should still have gone to Ponyville.

Another important episode gif.

Moondancer plush made already, of course.

Comic with nice art style

And as ED pointed out in the newest Drawfriend, these guys aren't getting much fan attention anymore.
Sugar Belle is the best of them
.

I don't want to create a post in the community thread just for this, so more details about the Art of Equestria book have been revealed. Surprisingly, it looks like it will be going into fan art too. I wonder if any will be shown, and if so, if they got permission from the artists.

Also,

First up, I'd just like to say that I always enjoy your compilation posts Sigma. I don't say it often enough, but your efforts are definitely appreciated!

I'm excited to learn more about The Art of Equestria. It sounds as if they're going for something really involved, rather than just being a glorified kids picture book. Even the cover itself sheds light on a question raised in The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone!

Same for me. Very nice see/read it.

I appreciate the appreciation. I do admit that I get a bit worried sometimes when I have to make multiple posts in a row due to no one responding.

Anyway, first on the roundup, Larson discovered an amazing new character

His request
Dim Sum fan art please. If she gets popular enough, Hasbro will be forced to put her in the 200th episode.

And someone already took up his offer

Speaking of which, really well done edit by SuperEdit involving Moondancer. Warning,

Having another baby dragon in the show would actually be pretty cool imo. Even if they're just a minor character.

Just saw the episode, and this was a big hit. Minuette was adorable, it tied to the original episode flawlessly. Moondancer's feelings and attitude was believable and genuine. Just a really good feeling episode all around.

I certainly wasn't expecting Pinkie Pie showing up. When Twilight said she knew how to fix things, I honestly expected time travel, but what they went with was better anyway.

Also shocked to see this. I certainly didn't notice, and I didn't see any here mention it

I can just imagine the confrontation in the Season Finale "I've been watching you Twilight Sparkle. Studying you. Watching your every move"

Edit: Weird how my post doesnt show up as the latest part in the forum.

It's amazing to me how "natural" it looks. Much better than those weird "vore" animations honestly.

Yeah, I didn't see your post listed as a new one in my subscriptions page. Weird.

Anyway, Starlight Glimmer was pointed out in the second post about this episode (602, top of this page).

Good to hear about season 6. After the breaks we had during season 5, I'm not sure I want to deal with another long break.

At least the wait will be shorter for next season. Sweet.

I bet it's going to have 13 episodes though, and I think it's too quick to release a new season.
