Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit |OT| Do you have the Need for Speed?

Pimpbaa, they HAVE fixed the rain on the PC version. download the update from the official site.

anyways, looking at all these screenshots makes me smile. that Forza 3 vs GT5 thread is really like the special olympics. HP is MUCH better looking.

60 fps what? HP was 60 fps when I last played it ;)

The Ultimate Road Car? That was a stumbling block early on, I think my attempts count got to 39 before I got Gold on it :D I was stumped by a Hot Pursuit last night, where I'm driving a Veyron 16.4 while the cops all have McLaren F1s... I'm sure I'll manage do pass it tonight!

I'm finding this game to be ridiculously hard. First of all, the rubberbanding in the single-player mode is atrocious; it feels like nothing you do in the first 2/3rd's of the stage counts for shit. Feels like it's much worse than even MotorStorm 2, despite me still being in the early stages of the 'campaign'. Secondly, the preview stages are infuriating, I can barely get silver in most of them. What the fuck is the trick to get good times?

With my lack of patience and short fuse as of late thanks to real-world circumstances, I can barely muster 3-4 races before rage-quitting (same with GT5). Thankfully the online mode in this game is insanely fun, or I'd break my disc in half.

the last bust against the mercedes sterling moss was hilarious, i always try to do this but it only works a quarter of the time -
most people slip out of it. if you could master this technique you could end HP a lot quicker as most online players smash into corners etc
I had to sit through a Kinect ad for this, it had better be good!

EDIT: nm it doesn't work at all.

Worked for me. I've done this a few times offline and online.

I've also made an offline strategy of heading straight for the "revealed" cop car after the vignette. Revealed & wrecked in 2 seconds.

I got all the golds in 2 days of playing. The final race (48 something miles), was pretty annoying just getting your car to the end without wrecking it

i'd like to see more from criterion in terms of this franchise. they did a nice job with it, after playing so many horrible NFS games, at least this game has it's heart in the right spot.

I need to start doing this. :lol

Same here. Just avoid doing it in Gauntlet, as it'll likely slow you down quite a bit

Got to give this a try last night, and unfortunately disappointment was my first feeling.

Why the hell do the visuals look so muddy? For a game that requires you to focus on bends in the road ahead at high speed, distant scenery looks like a smeared garble of pixels.

Reminds me of Mercenaries 2's snot filter. :(

Beat that last night.

Hot Pursuit modes are kind of bullshit and the cops should try picking on the person in first instead of ganging up on me in third place.

Also, I was outrunning AI cops last night and used one of my Turbos only to have a cop OUTPACE me and try to bump me off of the road.

Seriously?

I've had cops keep pace with me online while using Turbo. I usually just save it for when a cop is ahead of me and stopped, waiting for me to drive by. I turbo and leave him in the dust before he can accelerate.

Man, fuck that "King of the Road" Duel!!! Koenigsegg CCX R vs. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport in the mountains... First highway section is OK, uphill section OK, but downhill? In the hairpins that motherfucker was bumping me out of the way like we're playing GT5P :lol I wasn't laughing before I finally beat him, but now I can. Never again! I'm now "Most Wanted" (rank 20) with 2 events left, time to go grocery shopping :D

I do that all the time now. Serves the bastards right. Slows you down a lot, but damned if it isn't satisfying!

Also, I need more Autolog competition. Nobody is trying to take on my times any more.

I finally played this online for the last couple of days. I'm loving it but I'm definitely missing something. When I'm a racer I NEVER finish, yet I'm the best driver. I take turns great and get ahead of the pack, but the cops always bust my ass

self preservation - the cops will always go for the guy in front, because if one finishes they have pretty much lost (racers escaped), so they try their hardest to stop the guy out in front.

what i do is hang back, sometimes even last, wait until there is about 3-5 miles left (its risky but its worked out for me so far), catch up to the pack, by this point everyone should be on orange-red health and i just do a cleanup.

if your lucky and the cops are good they could take out all the other racers for you leaving you last. they will be on low health by this point and out of weapons, you speed to the finish line

another strategy for crap cops is to just speed ahead and stay in front until the end. if the cops suck they wont be able to stop you.
cops have better and faster tuned cars than racers, their nitrous fills almost instantly so they'll always catch you in a race, you gotta play smart as a racer

And don't be afraid to use EMPs defensively. I've gotten cops to crash or miss a shortcut or at least slow down by aiming an EMP that I know won't hit.

Exactly. Cops don't have jammers, so an EMP lock will cause them to swerve, brake or possibly crash to avoid getting hit. It's a great scare tactic.

platinum achieved, very easy to do actually. for the level 20 cop just re-do the last few pursuits (end of line and fight or flight) a few times and you'll get 20-25k bounty each time (if you bust all 7 but its fairly easy)

Still haven't received my copy yet. Checked amazon and this makes no sense because I live 20 mins away from fresno:

The game was shipped to fresno from sec town and then back to sac from fresno...

Talk about a hot pursuit! Except I thought the cops were supposed to chase the racers... And on the ground, not through the air. :lol

Love the game, hate the PC multiplayer integration. Proprietary friend systems blow. I'd be all over a console version if it met basic image quality standards. I just can't play racing games at 30fps.

I would if I knew how. I try to go into to the autolog recommends section and I can see there you can add friends but a window pops up telling me to go play online to meet people, if I cancel that window it boots me back out to the main menu. Why did they have to make this so ass backwards?!

This game really needed to use steamworks. EA is so fucking retarded for not using it and gimping the PC version as a result.

go to play online, go to play with friends, in there you will see a + thing. hit that and add me. it's a bit obtuse that it's in there, but that's where it is.

Somebody at Criterion needs to figure out when the fuck is a.m. vs. p.m.

You race at 12 a.m. (the stroke of midnight) and it's mid-day bright. You race at 12 p.m. (noon) and it's pitch-black night.

Good thing they didn't make a Midnight Club game or we'd all be racing in the middle of the day!

So fail.

Anyone have any tips on beating King of the Road?

No matter what car I'm using (or how good I'm doing) the AI blasts past me at one point or another and all of a sudden I'm behind by 4+ seconds.

I really wish this game was dependent on racing well; I might as well be racing the clock and not an opponent.

i forget i'm racing AI drivers half the time, because I'm not. i'm racing a list of random people that added me cause i put my name on gaf. i don't know who you are Almak, but curse you and your driving skills. CURSE YOU. luffysteve? i'm coming for you. you'll see. you'll all seeeee.

edit: and NFS:HP has just given me my first 'oh shit is that the time i better go to bed' in YEARS.

Yeah I noticed when I was playing last night. The race description came up and said 2000 hours - woo hoo an 8pm night time race. When it starts I'm flying through the woods with the sun glowing. I thought maybe it was a glitch or one-off. Clearly I was wrong.

Yeah, as I mentioned a few posts above, that Duel had me quite frustrated, as your opponent will catch up with you and pass you by no matter what... It's worse than a clock! What I did was choose the car I felt was the better drifter for hairpins (the Koenigsegg for me). In the first highway section, keep up with him, maybe even get ahead of him if you can. Then there's an abrupt transition to the mountain road, try not to lose him there. He will screw up in one of the first three hairpins, guaranteed, and that's your cue. Get ahead of him, then try to keep him behind by cutting him off. Still, he will pass you in that turn before you have the caves on the left. Follow him as closely as you can, then after the next big turn to the right when you drift, boost as much as you can and use the shortcut on the right. If you don't exit it ahead of him, it's too late, start again. If you do get ahead of him at this point, you can beat him by preventing him from drifting on the inside of turns, i.e. doing it yourself. He will bump you and try to push you out of the way, so you will need a bit of luck. After the last hairpin, boost to leave him in the dust, but be careful of that treacherous last bend!

The cockpit camera mod is a lot better than I expected. I was worried the view would be entirely static and "glued" to the car, but it works surprisingly well. What really surprised me is that the side and rearview mirrors are completely functional. That's a pretty darn small detail for Criterion to add since you normally won't notice it at all.

There are some downsides (actual cockpit model looks like something from 2003, you'll have to tweak the camera for each car you drive, there's some clipping issues and some cars looks really bad in the cockpit view), but I think it's fun to play with. And it makes each car actually feel more different from one another.

It's big reminder of why I love PC gaming so much. Modding can make games much more enjoyable.

yeah but how do you deal with all the unwanted in-game and annoying cutscenes?

Shiiieeeeeeeet, this game is fucking amazing once you learn how to drift properly. I just beat a time trial stage that had two loops and I did both perfectly. This is the most fun I've had with a racing game since Burnout 3. My racing game of this gen (so far). Criterion <3

If you're regularly playing this on the 360, add me. GT is Ji3eezy.

Well, I guess I got used to those after playing Burnout Paradise (where they were even longer). Maybe someone will find a way to make those skippable on PC, who knows.

360 people add me! De4th Strike is my gamertag

It's getting boring with just one person on my friends list :( (just switched over from PS3 for my annual change)

At least im getting 2000 extra a race for being top each time :lol
Got gold on all cop missions last night.
The last rapid response is crazy fun and also makes your eyes bleed.

Onto the racer side of things !

isamu said:

people have been complaining about these since burnout 3.

i didn't mind them then. i didn't mind them in burnout revenge. i didn't mind them in burnout paradise. i don't mind them in hot pursuit.

actually, they're even better in hot pursuit because when you take someone down it's a perfect oppurtunity to hit 'pause' and pull up photo mode to snap some awesome shots of car evisceration.
