Need for Speed Most Wanted |OT| Return to Paradise

Personally, I think it's a symptom of how fractured the demands of the racing genre is at this point, and Criterion getting the blunt of these complaints for their racing games is still far better than the likes of Midnight Club, Blur, Split Second and other racers that would have gone completely under the radar.

Just a brief glance over the last few pages: too much like BP, too much not like BP; too little traffic, too much traffic, want more story, wished it was more like BP. And about Paradise: I don't think I've ever seen that much love for it until this thread, cause that game was skewered here for the demo's "lacklustre structure", terrible races, and lack of restart. If I worked for Criterion (or any other racing devs looking at the arcade racing space), and I see this thread to make some sort of quick feedback checklist, I'd be swearing up and down at how wildly different everyone was looking at this game and what they wanted out of it.

BP's demo was not very good. And people, even fans of BP, complained about the lack of restart until it got restart. In my opinion it made the game better.

BTW, I don't think companies actually take feedback from forum posters, especially these days (no matter what they say they do). They look at the data they get from people playing the game.

I haven't played this much but I can see why someone looking for BP2 would be very disappointed. That doesn't make it a bad game, it's just different. I am sure it will end up with lots of fans, it's just not exactly BP2.

I just saw a BioWare billboard in the game. That's cute.

This game on PC is outrageously gorgeous. Heard console versions have significant FPS issues, a shame.

So does the PC port, sounds like. I don't play racing games with framerate issues. It gives me a headache.

PCs are having some FPS issues as well. lol. I was just noticing some drops when entering tunnels. I turned off AO and its totally solid now.

Read earlier in this thread, a lot of people have been getting framerate drops, don't be a dick.

I have been getting them too and it's inexplicable. The screen isn't even crowded and it starts stuttering like a N64 racer.

My few criticisms:

- SP seems to lack any focus. It's very muddled. "Get to number one" Then they drop you in and that's that. (Hot Pursuit had more of a narrative with at least little blurbs about each event)

- Upgrades earned in SP mean nothing in MP

- MP seems like a complete separate game. Separate Speed Levels and having to re-unlock things you've already obtained in SP

- Huge milestones for doing stuff in specific cars..but once you're done the 5 races and got 1st in each why bother continuing to use that car? (especially if you're going for trophies. Granted I maxed out my Gallardo with all pro parts so I use it for MW races.)

- I like that repairing re-paints your car. It's a neat effect but just re-states the complete lack of customization.

- Performance and visuals are sub-standard for how poorly it runs and hitches sometimes. (Midnight Club LA looks and runs better [based on PS3 performance/visuals])

Things old MW had this doesn't:
Narrative (But it's a racing game! doesn't fly. Even the new Forza has more of a story than this)
Complete car customization
More race types

Minor Gripe:

- Using EasyDrive the game doesn't pause or anything so trying to restart an event I got busted. And good luck trying to customize your car in MP. Better hope an event isn't starting. (You can also restart from the pause menu but the menu takes a bit to load)

THAT SAID... I'm still enjoying it. But I think it could have been so much more than it turned out to be. Seems they just cared about making multi fun and having "artistic" race intros over everything else.

I am just going to quote you because you echo my sentiments. Single player game is very disjoint for me. The lack of progression is really turn this game into collection of mini-game racers. Hop in one car finished all the race in that car then hop into another.

I like all Criterion past games and love both Paradise and Hot Pursuit but I really can't help but feel their last outing just lack ... character. I know some people like driving in real world cars but game like this I would prefer driving Hot Wheel cars. Some thing outrageous and crazy like what they did with Paradise .. seeing Nitro Boost coming out of my R8 or having my Porche fly it through the air like Delorean from Back to the Future really take me out of the moment. I know a lot of it is tonged in cheek humor (like giant windmills cops car) but I can't help but think the game would have more uniqueness if they have original cars design.

Anyway I like the game well enough with just few hours with it, yet I have no strong urge to go back and rather be playing more Horizon.

And to BruiserBear post about perceive value and price, I think it play big part in any of our purchase. If I didn't get this game for $30.00 I would probably be more critical.

This is the driving game of the year, no contest.

Interesting. I'm playing on ps3, digital copy and i'm not having a single framerate problem. In this thread i've read of someone who says that after some minutes of racing he was having framerate problems coupled with textures not loading fast enough.

Could be related to disk reading not happening fast enough ?

I think there were also people who experienced hickups with the digital download.

I remember Burnout Paradise being a little better on PS3. Do they develop that as the lead platform?

Jeez...still don't know what to do. I can deal with the jaggies and I'm not worried about the gfx, but framerate problems are a real gamebreaker in a fast racing game like this...well at least for me.

lol, good stealth edit. Was going to ask you which kind of NASA computer you got there.
Nothing too crazy. If your PC can run other games 1-2 years old at 1080p 60fps, it can run this.

This game is ridiculously fun, I can't wait to get home later and play more.

im playing on the xbox, game is installed. every once in a while i get this small delay, almost like the game freezes for half a second. other then that i am loving this game, the MP is a blast and i most likely will continue with that for a while before i go back to single player, definitely want to keep unlocking the better cars online and i think you do that but just playing and getting speed points and ranking up

How do the unlocks work on mp?

So, how does this compare to Forza Horizon? Do you guys think this one is better? I'm not a huge racing game fan, but I do enjoy them and I'm trying to decide between which one to play.

As silly as it sounds, the ol' Razor Callahan story telling should have made a return. It would have been a fun, campy addition to the game.

To be honest, I actually feel that The Run had a ton of wasted potential. I enjoyed the game for what it was, but the poor reviews will likely mean they won't try anything like that again.

The frustrating thing about this game is that despite being good it's not what I would want.

A NFSMW2 with completely stupid fmv story and significant time spent with cops/crash breakers would interest me alot.

A burnout paradise 2 with insane crashes 60 fps and a huge world.

Unfortunately the game while good really doesn't hit either quite enough :(

Indeed. My i2500K @ 4.5 GHz and GTX 580 averaging 45 FPS an dropping to sub 30 @ 1080p also disagrees.
i7-2600k @ 4.4ghz, GTX 590. 50-55fps maxed out. Drops to mid to high 40s inside tunnels. Turning AO off gives me capped 60 at all times, even in tunnels.

Yup, AO off really makes everything smoother, but aliasing is still an issue. Seems like post-AA effects are noit working, like FXAA or SMAA, and the game has some kind of internal AA, which unfortunately sucks.

It doesn't seem as big, but even if it was, four years have passed and bigger games have come out.

I'm sure that if the game has the type of community that Paradise had they will expand on the world in a similar way. Adding motorcycles? That would be awesome.

You doing AA with the Nvidia inspector? Might have to weight till the new driver. Also, has there been a way to turn off the internal AA? I would take increased FPS over sharpness. I mean, shit still looks sharp without it at 1080p.

I can imagine Forza being a little frustrating to someone that doesn't play a lot of racing games since it's a mix between sim/arcade.. NFS is way more pick up and play and much faster paced as well.

Game is absolute porn on PC. It's just gorgeous. I can't get enough of just looking at it. Well done Criterion. DAT night time.

I know there are far more good looking titles out there, but it's great for an open world racer.

Nope, trying to add it using injectors, but no dice.

Yep, its definitely a contest for best driving game.

Good thing is this is a contest where everybody wins.
Absolutely. Amazing game.

I'm also really impressed with the post processing they implemented. Many racers use motion blur to enhance the appearance of driving forward BUT it's never actually applied to ALL objects across the world. Object blur is definitely not uncommon in action games, but it never shows up in driving games...until now. Really impressive.

Agreed. The only thing killing it are dem jaggies.
