The bans in that thread are for calling people pedo's and being 'sick in the head'. Which has been a bannable offence since the days of Panda. You should be able to go back through the pages of the ban logs page by page and Ctrl+F 'anime' or 'pedo' if you want.
Both these users have previous warnings for derailing, baiting and generally posting over the top nonsense like this. If they can't discuss the topic properly like adults, then the precedent will be applied. I think it's telling that both of the banned, responded to each other with the same sentinment and actually didn't discuss any of the nuance but chose to drop their hot takes and run. Whether the games are distasteful or abhorrent is up for free debate - but it's not OK to label people who enjoy the content as pedo's. Just as it's not OK to label people sexist, misogynistic if they don't like the direction TLoU II is taking. Doczu appears to be discussing the topic like an adult in that thread for example, while having no affinity for the content in question.

Maybe if they were allowed to develop a sense of shame, they wouldn’t be playing games with sexualised children with their private parts barely covered by bath bubbles.
The warnings on the posts make it sound like they were just mocking regular old benign anime like Cowboy Bebop. If I were into anime, I sure as shit wouldn’t want to be associated with the stuff that thread was about.

Yeah, it's definitely NOT Cowboy Bebop.
As I said in that thread, it's not child pornography since it's not using real children, just portraying them in pixels but if you had those exact same pictures of actual children you'd be arrested in a heartbeat, regardless of whatever ridiculous scenario you used to justify it.
If members are allowed to defend these images, other members should be allowed to voice their utter disgust.

If thats how you feel, then dont. Dont go to the thread, dont talk about it, with that you won't be associated with it.
People can play whatever game they want and you can think whatever you want about them, just dont call them pedos or "sick in the head" over pixels. Bill O'Rights 's post is pretty clear.
And you can, just don't start insulting people.
Gaf has been very consistent on that front. You can criticise whatever you want, you can talk about whatever you want, just don't insult people.
If it’s being posted on a forum that I use regularly, I will be associated with it even if I don’t interact with it directly. Remember the Ree pedo discords?
Not the same thing at all. Conflating fiction with real life is not a good path, no matter what you're arguing about.
The “just pixels” argument didn’t hold water when the furries tried it on me, and it doesn’t hold water now when the “anime” aficionados are trying it on me. It’s an especially bad argument given the increasing fidelity of pixels as we approach a new console generation. If those bath bubbles weren’t there, they would still be “just pixels”, right? Would my criticism be justified then?
About fiction? It will never be justified, imho. I will never condone censorship.
The mental gymnastics you types do...
What mental gymnastics? You tried to paint an image and I said that I will never condone censorship even if the image you tried to paint was grotesque.
I’m trying to ascertain at what point it is no longer fiction and actual pornography in your mind. I‘ve noted that “pixels” are approaching photorealism as technology evolves and have dismissed the “just pixels bro” argument on that basis. In 20 years time when there is no discernible difference between pixels and photos, will you still be using that defense? At what point is it no longer “fiction”?
KAWAAAIIIIIIINot sure I understand or agree with the last two bans when this screenshot is literally in the OP. Try showing that to someone with no prior exposure to anime culture and see how you go explaining it.
The "It's just pixels" defence force might want to look at definitions of what can legally be construed as a sexualised image of a child in more than just thier own country. GAF is an international forum.
Do you know the difference between fiction and real life? No amount of photorealism will transform fictional "anything" into real life.
I think its way more constructive to try and have age restrictions to content properly enforced than trying to define an imaginary line to when fiction goes too far. Its absolutely impossible to do so, to begin with, since every person have their own sensibilities.
You wot m8Good thing Gaf is a private forum and they actually have total autonomy to decide what they want or not to have in it, no matter what legal definitons of any country have to say.
This is true. The "It's just pixels" defence force might want to look at definitions of what can legally be construed as a sexualised image of a child in more than just thier own country. GAF is an international forum.
This is true.
I think the whole "Kawaii culture" gets exploited to the point where the lines between animated child sexualization and cuteness gets blurred. I love Japan and their culture, but I won't pretend it has issues with this sort of stuff. They should do better because they already empower their youth in so many positive ways. It's a shame that this small but visible part of their culture still exists.
I still think calling someone a pedo for liking kawaii character designs is wrong.
Those game characters look underage. I'm deleting the thread and lifting the bans for the people who called it out.
Why was my reply to Papa edited out?
I understand, thanks for the clarificationNot the time or the place, MHK. You guys can discuss in MetaGAF if need be.
Elon?ok pedo
I had a good break. The main thing I found coming off that break is how little I care about the exact argument I was getting heated over before the break. Definitely a good thing to take that break. During that time I played an ungodly amount of Fallout 4 (finally hit the DLC) and am now going back to New Vegas. Playing games that are 6 and 10 years old respectively can make it hard to engage with too much of the content on this forum anyways, but I'm glad to be back just not sure how active I'll be until I'm actually playing new games again.
Yeah. Anger is almost like getting drunk. It skews reality, and reduces reasoning and perfectly functioning inhibitions that are there for a reason. It’s a really good idea to approach them the same way, I’ve been thinking recently.
Which has been a bannable offence since the days of Panda.
Didn't Curry Panda get banned because he sent porn to other users?
I noticed you mentioned him along side calling people "pedos" so I assume it was underage pornography.
I thought he was banned cuz he started stalking people.
So what was the tag calling him a pervert was for?

I don't think Whitesnake's comments in the George Floyd thread warranted a permaban, personally. Maybe some of his language could have been taken the wrong way with the subject matter at hand, but I doubt any of it was done in a malicious capacity. There were others in the thread who seemed far more hostile attempting to push the kind of racism that shouldn't have any place on GAF.
Just my two cents though, wanted to get it off my chest
I coulda easily went out there myself saying similar things, but I've been around the block enough times to know when to shut my mouth. I've been around blacks irl calling other blacks monkeys for doing similar stupid shit. Sometimes it's really easy to say something which can be misconstrued as an extreme form of racism even when the underlying intention is anything but.I agree that a perm for Whitesnake is harsh. He’s been a good contributor for a long time and that thread was particularly heated. There were several users demonising cops and I saw one user alluding to killing pigs go unpunished. I totally understand the context around comparisons between black people and monkeys. I think a ban was warranted, just not a perm. Some of the looters in those videos were behaving like animals and I think that if we as a society want to eliminate the stereotype, the onus is just as much on those people to not live up to it as it is on others not to use it.

That's not even in the same ballpark here. A cop would just laugh you off. You could be an 80 year old woman here and if you used the N-word on the subway, you'd probably have 2 fat bitches push you out the car onto the tracks and they'd become minor internet hero/celebrities.Perhaps it’s because I’m not from the US, but I don’t see it as any worse than calling cops pigs

Ape / monkey comparisons for black people are one of the oldest and most persistent racial demunatives and are actually incredibly close to the core racist belief that black people are less developed humans. Calling cops pigs is an insult, true, but (1) it is not targeted at a immutable property and (2) it does not carry the connotations about intellectual, societal and even physical qualities of the human. While I am critical of the "using make up to change your appearance to be closer to another ethnicity is always racist" line of thought and do think this is a very US-centric view, the same does not hold for the ape/monkey comparison. That is pretty universal in the western world.Seems like soft bigotry of low expectations to me. Don’t want to be dehumanised by being compared to an animal? Lead by example. From my outside perspective it seems as though black culture has been trained to interact with the world by baiting it into saying trigger words so they can then claim victory by default. Not real victory and not at all sustainable.
