NeoGAF's best of iOS

Who remembers Things, the to do manager?

http://culturedcode.com/things/iphone/

It recently got the long awaited cloud sync update as well as a visual refresh. I think they really hit it out of the park in terms of UI design. Even though they still used their own custom design elements, it still feels right at home in iOS. Great example of an app that can create its own identity while still maintaining the platform's aesthetic.

Some videos of it in action.

I can't be comfortable with or support a developer that seriously takes years just to get syncing to work. It is sad thinking about how much I have accomplished in the time that this developer with super expensive applications finished one feature.

... how long did it take for Apple to put out MobileMe/iCloud?

I found OmniFocus and 2Do to be really heavy handed compared to the simple Things interface.

After using both Things and Omnifocus, I ended up choosing Omnifocus.

Omnifocus can be as simple or as complicated as you need it to be. On iPhone, the Siri integration is great (and it was available really quickly after the 4S launch) and you can set location-based reminders, as well.

Hold up, I'm confused. This is a GTD app--why would you need syncing with online storage lockers like Dropbox or iCloud if it has a built in service for the desktop app too? Do you mean syncing with web calendars?

Is there a Windows version of Things? That would be one reason. A GTD app is only useful to me if I have multiple ways and locations to access the data. (I also like a way to export or otherwise move my data if I should need or choose to. Not to mention back it up on my terms and not rely everything I need to do in my life on their cloud.)

I'm also hesitant to drop $20 on Omnifocus without being able to try it first since it looks as overly cluttered as 2Do (which is what I currently use on my phone). I want something that is quick and simple on my phone. Something like Any.do would be great, but that app doesn't sync with anything either (and a few other issues). Why is this so hard to find:)

The biggest problem with Omnifocus is the lack of any way to mess with your task lists etc outside of Mac platforms. It's a pain in the ass to only be able to type things on that damn iPhone keyboard.

Yup, same problem with Things too ^

Can anyone please recommend a good way of storing recipes? I'm thinking Evernote since (unlike the apps we were just talking about) it can be accessed and added to on pretty much any device. Thanks!

While you can't "mess" with your lists outside of the programs themselves, you can email yourself tasks. I do it from my work computer all of the time.

Heh. I just use Siri for that. "Remember to xyz"->xyz appears in the Omnifocus inbox.

But what I'd really like is a way to edit things. To easily turn an inbox item into a project and add a bunch of subtasks. To easily add descriptive text to various tasks, without laboriously typing with my thumbs.

The closest I got was typing things into Evernote, then c/ping them into Omnifocus, but it's still more trouble than it really ought to be.

I just bought Nitrous from Cydia and used in Chrome and Facebook. What a paradigm shift. Any other recommended apps where I can enable it to boost performance?

Anyone have any methods of extracting text messages from a backup so I can restore to a previous firmware? Currently on iOS 6 beta but want to downgrade back to 5.1.

Thirst is a clever Twitter app. It's Flipboard style. It aggregates tweets by topics rather than a timeline. Very nice.

Don't get used to it. Twitter just killed those types of apps.

Yes yes, I'm aware of all the Twitter backlash, giga. After all, I'm probably the only person on GAF that backed app.net :/

Do you guys generally take your photos with HDR or not?

I'm undecided - often the colours are a little washed out, but the detail is a lot better... but it's annoying having to go through two photos all the time to decide which one is best

Feel like Tweetbot for iPad was a waste of money. The official Twitter app just feels so much better, faster, smoother, etc. What does Tweetbot on iPad do substantially better for you to choose it over the official app?

So Ecoute for iOS was released today and imo it's a really good music player. It's replaced the Music app for me. Works very smoothly & has Last.fm support.
That actually looks really neat. I'm a big fan of Panamp for it's queueing capabilities but the elegance of that is compelling.

I like the syncing of where I left off between the iPhone and iPad apps.

I like the streaming tweets.

I feel like it's much easier to follow conversations with Tweetbot.

I like the UI in Tweetbot much more than in the official app.

Going to Ireland in a few days, hiring a car and I'm useless with maps... can anyone please recommend a good sat nav app please? I use Waze at the moment but won't have any data ;_;

Thanks!

It better not fucking affect Flipboard.

I toggle it on every now and then. At night I try to turn it on but whenever there are moving things (eg a crowd), I turn it off.

For sat nav I would try Navfree.

Many thanks Enco, I think I'll try to switch up between HDR/non HDR depending on lighting then... and just got Navfree - looks awesome! Have put in the airport and the hotel into my favourite places list :)

I was watching one of the new Galaxy SIII commercials, and one of the features I wish the iPhone has is the continuous rapid snapshot feature where you can take 20+ shots in one go.

Is there an app that does that?

Hey!

I know Camera+ lets you take multiple photos in Burst mode which lasts—I believe—as long as you hold down the button. That said, the app states that photos are lower quality than ones taken normally; my observations from a few "tests" I just ran show that they look a little more compressed than usual but still better than the inward-facing camera. If you just want photos for Facebook or something the app would probably do the trick but I guess it depends on what you want the photos for. The app is only 99¢ right now as far as I know so you don't have much to lose if you want to try it out—the app gives you the option to set exposure and focus separately at the cost of face detection. There might be apps better suited for your purposes but Camera+ does have the basic functionality so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Hope that helps!

That definitely helps. I know a few people with Camera+, but it never really occurred to me to try it out.

I'm not looking for any professional quality photos, so I don't mind the slightly lower quality. As long as whatever I've taken isn't a blurry mess, it'll do the trick. And 99 cents definitely ain't bad.

Yeah Camera+ is a great app.

Just one quick question, has anyone noticed their battery life draining a lot quicker lately? Maybe since 5.1.1? I used to be able to put my phone into airplane mode overnight and wake up in the morning and my percent hadn't moved at all, but last night I put my phone into airplane mode with 18% battery left, and woke up to find my phone completely dead ;_;

A friend of a friend made this app:

http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/07/timbre-iphone-app-local-live-music-discovery/

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/timbre/id533493750?mt=8

Timbre is a free, location-based band discovery app that finds local music and shows for you! Set it to your current location, or check out the music scene in San Francisco, New York City, or any other location you can dream of.*

***Go See Your New Favorite Band***
Once you're listening, it's easy to find your groove. First song not your cup of tea? A quick swipe on the screen and you’re rocking out to someone else. Like what you hear? Purchase tickets to the show straight from the app.

***That’s a Lot of Things***
Timbre searches a database that contains more than 65,000 artists and 75,000 venues, so you’re guaranteed to find a great show near you!

***Coming Soon***
More bands, more countries, more music. Give us 5 stars if you love the app, and shoot us a note at feedback@timbreapp.com if you have suggestions.

*Today, US only. Tomorrow, the world!**

**"Tomorrow" is used figuratively and may not refer to an exact amount of time in days.

I think it's pretty neat.

When my friends give me book/movie/album recommendations I just tend to write them in the notes app. Is there an app where I can write recommendations, or receive them from friends, that'll also pull in ratings from IMDb/RT/RYM/Metacritic/Amazon etc so I can prioritise?

Thanks for the Navfree recommendation Enco - worked a treat!

Off to Florida in a month or so... same question applies - would Navfree be okay for that? Also slightly OCD, but can anyone please also recommend another decent/cheap satnav software for Florida? Just in case for whatever reason Navfree doesn't work (can you tell I'm really dependant on sat navs? :D)

I really like Waze. I have never used Navfree, so I don't know how it compares. But Waze has traffic data, red light cameras, and police alerts.. those are user generated data, so it's not always 100% accurate, but it works quite well.

EDIT

Just quickly read up the info on Navfree. It seems that it has offline maps, which is nice, Waze doesn't have that.

Thanks - I love Waze and use it over here even more than the TomTom app I paid an extortionate amount for, but yeah, no offline maps unfortunately, and my data bill in the US would be huge!
