NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I just finished a session of Xexyz, neat game, I always liked this one.

I was trying to see how far I could make it on one credit, which was the second (or third?) boss. Stage 3-3, I think.

Doh. You had me looking up to see if I might have had it in my famicom collection.

Brand new game from 2011 for NES hardware. Nice. I like these arcade classic style games too. Might have to get it!
Yup, it's really well polished too, great music and the gameplay ramps up nice.

So it's been one year since I made this thread. I've been buying up a LOT of video games within the past year or so. The scope of this has been bigger than I originally intended it to, but I think I'm at least 90%-95% of where I want to be with my retro video game collection.

I'm pretty much complete with the NES. I bought a very large order of BitBoxes to put all of the games in. I don't really have manuals for anything but Metroid and the two Zeldas. I also have several repros in this collection.

Ignore the fact that Startropics has a ghetto cover. I made a mistake on my original order, lol. I'll probably print out a proper cover once I can also make some custom covers for my SMB2J and Recca repros.

Those cases look fucking awesome. Wish they were cheaper.

It's been like a year and a half since I started collecting. I've been tempted lately to lay it all out and take pictures of it. I took a bunch of pictures a month ago or so of everything of value we own for the sake of insurance (not that I'm planning on getting robbed or anything but seemed like a good idea to do before we left on vacation). No good group shots though.

Any pics of the Splatterhouse inside the bitbox? Got any other Famicom games in there for comparison?

Seems pretty good for that price. Some good games in there. And Rad Racer is rad! It's a pretty good Outrun clone.

Also I don't think you can hotlink using that image host, or something else weird is going on, because your picture isn't visible. I had to dig it up in the source code. For others, here's a link to the picture: http://postimg.org/image/sxqiiow3j/

You'd think a Square made racing game meant to follow off of Outrun would have good music. Its not bad...just...not that memorable.

Awesome collection dude! Glad I could help contribute.

Anyone have any good cleaning tip for 72 pin connectors? Or maybe any recommended seller that carry good replacements? Been picking up NES consoles left and right but when I clean the connectors or adjust the pins I just can't seem to get them working like the people in Youtube videos or online guides.

I don't know if I can explain it good enough, but what I always do is take a thread needle and only bend the part of the pin that touches the cart up. Just do each one of them up so that you get a nice connection.

Then I boil it for ~5 minutes and insert a cart about 10 times at 2 1/2 minutes and 5.

Everyone seems to do it slightly different, but that's how I do them.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I think I know what you mean about how you bend the pins. I take it you shouldn't mess with the ones that are deep inside the connector on the top. I tried so many things but I still have to move the carts around. Heck I even used some Mothers on the contacts and they came out very clean but I still have to fight with the carts. The carts are very clean as well. I use alcohol and a toothbrush most of the time even boiled two connectors yesterday but no dice. It must be the way I'm adjusting the pin which is causing my issues.

If I had to get only one Mega Man game, which one would it be?

The last one in the series (6?) as it perfected all the additions in the series, only despised because it was more of the same?
The first one, who laid ground to a superb game, the sheer amount of novelty never to be matched again?
The second one, who built upon the first one, adding needed gameplay improvements and correcting rookie mistakes?
The third one, forgotten by many, who was built like the second one, adding newgameplay elements without straying away from its roots?
Or any other one?

I only casually tried (ie without ever finishing a level) Mega Man 2 a long time ago, I liked what I had but I never had the opportunity to invest myself into it. I did play a lot of Mega Man 9 on the Wii, I went up to the final level where I gave up on a specific screen I couldn't beat.

MM2 and MM3 are generally the most-recommended, and both are good and worth playing.

I've personally played an awful lot of 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10. Of those, I think MM9 is in a class all by itself. It might be the only one that got the series' trademark gimmick down perfectly: it has the best set of weapons. Acquiring the enemies' powers is what defines Mega Man, and that game has an arsenal that is both pretty useful and pretty fun. Earlier games tend to have single weapons that are just outright broken to the point of making everything else useless (Metal Blade), a bunch of silly gimmick weapons that are impractical to use for anything except boss weaknesses, or a charged buster shot that strengthens the basic weapon and makes everything else less worthwhile as a result.

I've only briefly played 4 through 8 so maybe they fare better than I'd know.

Sounds like I need to check out MM9.

I've played and beaten every single god damned Mega Man game outside of the Game Gear one, and Mega Man 9 is legit. It has some of the best weapons and uses for those weapons in the series.

I'm a huge Inti Creates fanboy, but whatever.

It worked! Thanks again for the help. I'll be trying this technique out with any NES I fix from now on. I don't even have to push the carts down when playing games. I made sure that I used a precision screwdriver to hold underneath the pin and then used a sewing pin needle to lift the metal forks to avoid bending them too much. After that I boiled the connector and it cleaned it up real good.

I saw a method on youtube for cleaning pins.. This guy actually popped the entire pins out and bent them. I was following his lead, but ended up breaking one and had to get a replacement connector. The replacement works, but I feel like such a savage. Can individual pins be purchased or is it time I toss the casualty?

I still have an NES I couldn't get working though, so I'll try the method described above.

Yea there's no reason to spend all that time taking those pins out. I'd just spend the $5 before I spent an hour doing that. I don't think you can buy individual pins so I would you'd the broken connector.

Love Xexyz. Strange and wonderful game I bought on a whim as a pre-teen.

I finally got round to purchasing a replacement AV cable for my Famicom which arrived today. I was in a retro mood and decided to play a few games. In retrospect it was a bad idea starting with Ghosts n Goblins as that's all I've played today!

I'm really pleased that I managed to clear the game once through. I managed to get down enemy and boss tactics really well including Red Arema who has always eluded me and kicked my ass. Its a fantastic game that believe it or not isn't quite as hard once you get used to how the game plays!
Its not perfect though, having certain enemies only vulnerable to certain weapons was a bastard idea that I had no idea was a thing (but explained why the third boss wouldn't die!). The odd glitches that damage you for no reason also suck, as if the game isn't hard enough already!
Oh and to add insult to injury the version I'm playing (the Famicom version) has the continue feature as a button cheat. Much respect to anyone clearing this game without continuing!

One question about the second playthrough, have they made it harder? Enemies seem harder/faster etc. but I can't put my finger on it...

I'll hopefully be expanding my collection soon, so far I was focusing on Capcom:

Third one forgotten by many? I dunno about that, people probably rank the game second only to 2. My personal favorite MM though.

I think 5 is the most forgotten game in the series, while being one of the better ones.

Its between 5 and 6 for me. 5 got a very limited release in Europe and 6 never got a Euro release until the 3DS a year or so back so it took me years to get a hold of a copy of each and play them. Even to this day 6 especially is probably my least played of the Megaman titles. Pity as I really like some of the things the game does (the rush adapters for example).

4-6 had a tangible drop in difficulty on top of being more of the same, I think. 4 being the least guilty.

3's the best, but 2 is close.

You shouldn't be allowed to walk around, as a human being, without having experienced Mega Man 2. Even if 3 is a better game, 2 is more iconic of the series.

Blurry screen of victory!:

Ghosts n Golbins wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Tough sure but I felt after learning how to dispatch the Red Arremers I'd passed a major hurdle in the game. did anyone else find that the second half of the second level is a sticking point. I died at that point countless times before finally getting past it on both playthroughs. The rest of the game is almost fair by comparison! I blame the birds, those damn birds...

I'm wondering which game I should go after next. The evil part of me wants to buy Battletoads to see if I go crazy trying to complete it...

Ghosts 'n Goblins is harder than Battletoads because the controls are shit and the design is random and can be unfair at times. Having unlimited continues helps, though.

NES Battletoads plays great and is mostly memorization, with a couple of reflex tests (mines while surfing, meteors and missiles while riding the rocket).

I think the only one I've beaten in the series is Mega Man 2. And X on the SNES. 3 is pretty brutal lol. 2 and 3 are my favorites probably since they're the ones I've played the most. The ones after 3 I haven't played that much.

After 22 years of wanting a copy, finally got The Black Bass. I'm sure it's not as fun as I remember, but stoked nonetheless.
Hmm, another member who picked up this game huh? Perhaps my hate in a previous post was unwarranted? :D

So many nice looking boxes! I need to pick up quite a few of those games for my own collection I think. :)

Ghosts 'n' Goblins on the NES is pretty good, but it was unfortunately ported by Micronics and not Capcom themselves. Hence the glitches, non-smooth scrolling, sprite flicker, slowdowns etc etc. But it's actually among Micronics' better made games and is definitely still fun and playable. Still though, had Capcom made it themselves it could've been so much better.

I've never managed to get past the third level myself. I always get stuck in that part where there's like 5 or 6 Red Arremers after one another and then a dragon boss at the end. I mean wtf. And I've even become pretty good at dodging the Arremers but you always need to be on edge with those and since there's so many of them you're bound to mess up. Congrats on beating it!

Regarding the second round, it wouldn't surprise me if they did make it harder since it was a pretty common thing to do back then in games. Even Super Mario Bros. has a harder second playthrough. And especially with the nature of Ghosts 'n' Goblins being what it is I'd say it's very likely. :D

Edit: I see you also have Son Son, which is another Micronics port job and which suffers from the same issues with heavy sprite flicker and slowdowns and terrible scrolling. Micronics also made 1942 while Capcom made the sequel 1943 themselves, and it's really obvious when comparing the two games that the second one is just so much more competently made. Capcom didn't make a Famicom game themselves until Commando/Senjō no Ōkami. Just some random trivia there.

Thanks for the info. Didn't realise that Capcom didn't do the earlier ports but it makes sense. Son Son was fairly fun, I remember finishing it a year or two ago, but it did have flicker/scrolling issues.

1942 isn't that great, it just feels slow and slightly unresponsive. Pity as I do like the arcade game.

I think on the second GnG playthrough its mainly the speed that is altered. Red Areemers are faster and shoot two shots now. Its best to avoid them through exploiting a glitch if you can (have them disappear off screen). I can still beat them, but level 3 is crazy as it throws several your way in a short space of time.

GnG didn't feel random, enemies at least always seemed to spawn in the same place and do the same thing. It was really just the birds on the second level that caught me out. But the controls do feel a tad unresponsive especially the ducking but I don't know if that's a port issue or with the series itself (I'm playing Super GnG at the moment and have the odd issue with ducking sometimes).

Can't wait to get Battletoads and try that. I'm getting the Famicom version first to go along with the rest of my collection but might double dip on the USA version as well seeing as the Japanese port is reduced in difficulty in several areas...

I got my modded NESRGB toploader from baphomet today. WOW WOW WOW.

I was a doubter about the quality and necessity of NES RGB but man, what a difference it makes. There are so many games that have fuzzy images or bad contrast or crawling pattern backgrounds that will look amazing now.

I still have a toaster style nes for nostalgia's sake and the image as it originally appeared, but RGB is the way to go, and baphomet does quality work quickly.

I'm at just over 100 titles now for NES. Someday, years from now i'll have a complete set, but maybe not a complete US set. I may have to go for famicom versions or repros for the more expensive $200+ games.

Ordered recently: Donkey Kong Classics- $12 shipped
Mega Man 5 famicom $17 shipped
Mike Tyson's Punchout $17 shipped
River City Ransom $24.50 shipped
Gradius 2 Famicom $12 not sure on shipping yet
Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti $16.

The last two were from yamatoku classic and i'm not sure on the shipping rate yet. They have some good prices at times. I have a serious lack of retro game stores in the milwaukee area so I tend to prowl ebay for reasonably priced listings. Ebay isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, you just have to be patient and do lots of looking. If you just want it NOW and BUY IT NOW you will pay out the ass.

My next title in the alphabetical list is Addams Family: Puggsley' s Scavenger Hunt which is for some reason hard to find under $25-$30. It looks like a garbage game and ive seen auctions end at $15 so i'm hoping to get one of those. IDK why this game has gained some value lately.

:Fistbump.

You must have the patience of a saint.

GnG didn't feel random

It's kind of random.

The biggest enemy in the game is randomly getting the fire weapon drop in your face.

The arcade version is a lot more fun to play. I looped the NES one and the arcade version in Saturn Capcom Generations 2. While I wouldn't say the arcade game was easier, it definitely felt better.

Something like that! I did have a few points where I did get a tad annoyed (the second part of level 2) but once you get into the swing of things its really fun! So much so that after finishing it the second time I kept playing, getting to the beginning of stage 5 on 1 credit which I was proud of!

Fire drops are the devil. There is a way to spawn a fire torch drop in level 2 that blocks the only ladder down. Death was the better option at that point! It does suck though, that weapon in general feels like an obstacle across the entire series.

I did give the arcade version a shot via the PSP collection the same time I played the NES version and I really enjoyed it as well. Got stuck on level 6 with the shield weapon, It was late and I couldn't beat the dragon boss :( I need to give it another try and finish it properly. The only huge differences I found were birds were far less annoying and the Red Arremers required a slightly different strategy to beat.

Damnit, paid a ton for my board-only N8 Everdrive from Stone Age Gamer a wee while back and now they're on Ali Express with an outer shell for $85 USD shipped, lol.

Probably clones, not the real deal. Krikzz keeps a list of resellers (to whom he sends his products) on his website. If it's not from there, it's not legit.

Problem with clones being: copies of an earlier board revision, older firmware, possibly not compatible with official updates, flacky electronics, etc.

Yeh possibly. The PCB markings are the same as the one I have. If I didn't already have one I'd take a chance on it for sure, but I'm poor as hell haha.

Yeh! I did a bit of searching and turns out it's quite common in China, and like mentioned above they are old versions and can brick when updating, argh!

finally got around to putting together one of the shelves and had a chance to finally put all my nes stuff up and count all of it sitting at 310 :O

gonna go to bed and when i get up i gotta put together another shelf and fix some of this mess this is only overflow should be fun -_-

Shelves can be pretty annoying...but once you finish it and see your games on the shelf, its all worth it. So easy to just pull a game, pop it in, and go.

Wow. Nice collections, dudes!

Recently acquired these in two visits to a local pawn shop.
I thought the guy was pulling my leg, or exaggerating, but he's not joking about these being that much cheaper than they'd be on ebay. Feel like I got a good deal.

44 dollars total:

(Did the image show up?)

My famicom collection is huge, so my main aim back in the states is to round off the NES collection with games that didn't come out in Japan. Also, my Genesis/Megadrive collection is lacking, so I've been focusing on that recently.

Nice haul! Been picking up NES consoles left and right as well as some games here and there. I found GI Joe at a flea market for $3. I can't believe that there was a shop in my area that sells a lot of the retro stuff. It is kind of like a pawn shop but the amount of NES and other retro games they had just floored me. Kind of reminded me of Funco Land when I was looking around.

My lineup for my Analogue NT is complete - a handful of NES and Famicom titles, and two brand new, genuine dog bones. I will get some of the Japanese games translated.

I am looking forwards more to getting to play these than the Autumns big titles, bizarrely.
