Nobody's really using movie reviews in that manner, or at least not a large enough contingent of moviegoers to make a real difference.

Either the commercials are selling the movie, or they're not. Reviews aren't usually a factor, unless they're unanimously fantastic or unanimously shitty and that becomes a news story in and of itself, like what recently happened with Pixels.
So basically reviews only matter to people like us unless, like you said, there's a wide consensus either way. I'm not sure what to guess given that the ads have been a bit sparse from what I've seen on TV (I think I've only seen 1 F4 ad a day). Plus the advertising for the movie was kinda all over the place.

I'm guessing that we will start getting reviews on Wednesday regardless of the embargo. The film has over 40 international releases happening on the 5th and 6th.

Those that care will have an idea of the film's reception before 8pm on thursday.

So they are bribing us with a trailer that's going to be released on Friday no matter if you go watch Fantastic 4.
Yeah, kind of a moot point to use that as a bribe. Would have been a remotely convincing bribe had the trailer been held back until the Monday after opening weekend.

So I had mentioned earlier that I had a positive review of the "rough cut" I saw a while back and I had the "privilage" of seeing the final cut last night... Fuck.

I don't know what I was thinking when I watched the "rough cut" but my opinion did a complete 180. The effects didn't improve a speck from the rough cut, Doom was a fucking mess and offensively bad and the story, which I previously enjoyed on first viewing, just seemed hacked up to shit.

So yeah, without saying anything that could get me in trouble, the film is a botched mess and will go down in history alongside X-Men: The Last Stand and Spider-Man 3.

Oh, and the humor? There was more here than I originally recalled but it's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen levels of shitty.

Oh yeah, one more thing to edit in, my favorite scene in the entire movie, a highlight action scene with The Thing? Cut. Gone. Why? Because the effects for him weren't up to par so his scenes were snipped.

Final opinion on Fantastic Four?
4/10. No thanks to the sequel.

I have to be super vague but some musical cues, minor story sequences cut, awesome action scene with The Thing cut (hint: it was briefly in the trailer), more "humorous bits" and a shitty vocal effect was added to Doom.

You don't have to be vague, others on here have already seen it. I guess screenings are already starting.

My god.
So I guess that Fantastic 4/10 OT title wasn't a bad idea after all if this review is any indication.

Its difficult to be specific about the film before the embargo and stuff. But without seeing it again, I'd give it a 3/10. I mean I'd rate thor 2 as a 5, but as a vastly superior film.

After seeing thor 2, I wanted them to go back to the drawing board and make it better. After seeing this, I want them to never make these movies again, ditch the actors and the setting they create, and negotiate with Marvel.

Damn, that's brutal. Its a shame, i thought this film had so much potential

Jesus Christ.
You mean a Sony-esque deal with Marvel or give the rights to Marvel outright?

So, no X-Men crossover then? Shit sounds grim..
At least with Ant-Man there was one positive & one negative impression from GAF, & I ended up loving the shit out of it (& the negative one wasn't even that bad of a score). This one......my god.

Well either one. People like complaining about Marvel but I'd rather see a marvel take on these than this... nothing film.
Judging by the reviews you & Jiggles had of this movie, it may be best for Marvel to just get the F4 outright.

what a disaster...

Still going opening day. I gotta get in on this conversation.
Let us know what you think. I'm waiting for reviews to come out before I go see F4. At the same time, if it's this much of a trainwreck, I need to see why.

Kinda? The two reviews in this thread seem to be less than favorable.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there's definitive proof it's better, or worse. I was just arriving to my own conclusions.
I guess that makes sense. That being said, based on these impressions, the movie turned out to be as bad as a good chunk of of GAF was expecting.

Audience: What if we say no?

MBJ: Say yes.

Or ...no, whatever it's your ticket money man. I wouldn't make you go see it.

The Corman FF movie is practically a Room-level disaster. This just sounds like an unfortunately bad movie based on two gaffer impressions only.

Fair enough. Then again, I haven't seen Corman's F4 (though I've yet to see this one, either).

If this film does bomb both financially and critically then the damage done to the Fantastic Four IP/brand would be such that Disney wouldn't really see the value in trying to 'buy back' the theatrical rights from Fox. And if Fox don't want to make a sequel (or yet another pseudo reboot) they could potentially just stick the F4 actors in a larger "Fox does Marvel" event film given how flexible their sequel options probably are.

I simply don't see any situation (in the short term at least) where this film's performance results in Fox and Marvel coming to some kind of arrangement with the Fantastic Four. Fox is a very difficult place to do business and, unlike Sony Pictures, F4 isn't all they have in their franchise cupboard.

Could an apathetic Fox let the clock run out on their rights to the F4 much like they did with Daredevil? Perhaps. But given how Disney are positioning Inhumans as a replacement in every way for the X-Men I don't see them looking to play nice with Fox anytime soon.

When the Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie is ostensibly better, you know you fucked up.

It's honestly more faithful to the comics than the 2005/new movie are.

It's worth a watch, it's honestly not that bad, just very cheesy. Think of it as a TV movie from Sci-Fi channel in the 90's.

Supposedly Marvel was willing to pay & give Fox an extension on Daredevil for the cosmic characters associated with the F4 (Galactus & Silver Surfer for example), so I guess the real value of the F4 rights to Marvel are with the villains & the cosmic characters. As for sticking the actors in an X-Men movie, if the movie is really this bad, these actors would be toxic as their respective F4 characters & would taint the X-Men films in the eyes of the average joe.
