New look for PS5 console coming this holiday season

So they gave up on Cerny's weird drive configuration that forced the weird sizing?

That's interesting; wonder how the drive will perform vs. OG drives.

The price raise + removing stand from digital cracks me up lol Dominant Sony being dominant Sony.
Does that mean it isn't 12 channels any more? Or did they just do something with the chips?

Travel. I want to take this with me when I'm sitting in hotels during the week. I Had a PS4 slim with me last week and I would love to take a PS5 instead. Glossy finishes will be scratched all to hell.

I knew someone was going to say this.

Okay now who brings theirs to their job at the coal mine?

Can you remove the drive from the disc version?

the stand is sold separately?

$30 stand
$50 dollar price increase for digital
$80 dollar disk drive

to get a new digital ps5 to equate a day one physical ps5, you are paying $60 more. to buy discs that will be useless by an all digital next gen.

this seems like a wasted opportunity from sony.

So they have increased the price for Digital Version. Considering that the hardware hasn't changed much, makes me wonder how much Pro will cost then.

DE went from $399 to $449. Usually refreshes like this lower the cost.
It lowers the cost to Sony :p
But really - it's far from the first such refreshes that raised the price - it's just the first to actually make disc-drive optional.
And I am about 95% sure they raised the price in response to MS raising theirs. It makes the PS5 look less premium if it's only 50$ more than the bargain bin box noone wants to buy.

Is it industry standard now that hard drives must be swappable?? When did that start happening? Never heard of that feature before.
Sony made HDD swappable since 2000.
It may not be standard with rest of the industry (it's not - MS has been all over the Map and Nintendo would sooner see the world burn than allow you to swap built-in storage) but with Sony - it's been this way for 23 years - so yes, it's pretty damn standard.

Sony continues the trend of slim consoles being uglier than the originals.
Charging extra for a vertical stand is unfortunate. Having the digital price go up $50 is unfortunate. Will gladly keep the OG PS5 that I already own.

Also, can anyone confirm that you can still expand the internal storage in these?

Someone on reddit made a table with all the PS5 SKUs and their pricing at various points in time (e.g. launch window, when it got the price bump in all regions other than the US, and now with the new models announcement).

Poor Japan.
Sony playing with Fire... many japanese can leave to PC. Steam in Japan is bigger at each years...

So basically the whole thing about the 825Gb being some special number for improved performance when they launched this was mostly BS right?
It was nothing special back then. They just went with several discrete smaller flash chips connected in parallel to get the bandwidth they needed. Problem is that if you also go with bigger flash chips you go up in storage a lot and it would have cost too much. Period.

Why do we care so much about the Japanese market, they are primarily focused on mobile now and nothing Sony does will change that unless they make a viable handheld competitor.
The mobile market is indeed big Japan just like everywhere else, but the console market there is also huge.

This year the PS5 will sell more in Japan than almost any year managed by the PSP or PSV, Sony don't need a handheld.

Having said that, Sony's situation in Europe is very different to Japan, and will not become like Japan.

This makes no sense, if you want all that, then just buy the PS5 with ODD bundle that is still priced at the same price the OG ODD PS5 cost. $499.

If you are buying a digital version, not only does that mean you probably dont want to get discs (obviously) there is now at least the option for you to be able to make that a disc using PS5 in the future if you want.

And I don't get people, you have thin sony is running a charity? They can price this shit at what they are pricing it because people are buying them. If they find that sales are not as good as tey anticipate, they would drop the prices.

I mean, you may put your consoles on the shelf to collect dust, but I put mine to work. Depending on what I'm playing I'm taking either a PS4 slim, Series S or Switch with me on the road multiple times per year and they take some abuse. So durability is Important. I can put my switch in a rugged case and it's good, but the PS4 and Series S have to ride in a padded backpack. So snark is just completely misplaced.

Wait was there 8?
Edit: There was 6, right?
Yeah, I double checked and it seems it's 6 indeed so that twitter user was wrong. :( The GDDR6 memory is the one split in 8 chips.

The PS5 packs six TH58LJT0T24BA4C Toshiba BiCS 3D memory flash chips. Each Toshiba chip is 128 GiB or just over 137GB. The six drives are powered by a custom SSD controller to make it all work as one.
