New look for PS5 console coming this holiday season

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I guess its just to get down to actually running one sku off the assembly line
But it won't be because one has a disc drive, detachable or not it still makes a separate SKU.
There is no difference from what was already available other then they're now producing the Disc Drive for the one without as an optional purchase.

Sounds more like hopium.

Standard PS5 will drop in price when the Pro Releases. That’s it. 599$ is the absolute most it will cost and it’s possible it will be 550$, depending on how much they cut the price of the standard.
It's possible. I'm just expecting a bigger price premium than $100 over the PS5 Physical price. That Series X slide showing the digital for $499 in 2024 says to me that MS doesn't expect a price drop. That's why I'm predicting $699. Inflation is up all over the world, and the hardcore are likely to spend that much. If Sony does plan on dropping the price to $399 for the PS5 Physical (though I expect it for the digital instead), then $599 makes absolute sense. $549 makes no sense as a $50 price difference when you're already that high likely doesn't move enough consoles to drop the price by that much. $549 and $599 don't look much different on a sticker.

Using Spider-Man to burn thru excess stock of the older model is funny? I find it smart.
Yeah it was a smart move, but the wording in the tweet "new PS5 console" is cheeky as they obviously knew that the announcement for the new model was just around the corner.

Just curious why you think there wont be?

Henderson leaked this detachable drive model, the PS Portal, the PS earbuds and the Dualsense Pro controller and some tech specs for the PS5 Pro that a very reliable chip leaker named Kepler confirmed and Henderson doubled down today it was coming.
Basically:
Maybe people have bad short-term memory or didn't pay attention, but iirc it was Yoshida that was talking about how the primary reason for a PS4 Pro was too boost PSVR-performance, as PS4 was struggling with the bare minimum requirements for a proper VR-experience.

Then PS4 Pro was released alongside PSVR (a month later) and MS had to release One X, which happened a year later, in order to not fall behind even more.

Somehow people got the idea that a Pro-console is now standard procedure each gen, even though Sony said this isn't necessarily the case and MS apparently having no plans this gen.

It doesn't even make sense this gen, but I'm just a random nobody going by logic, so I could easily be wrong.

In any case, there is no need for Pro-consoles this gen, imo.
But I'll buy one day 1 if Sony releases a Pro.

As I say, it's just why I don't think it will come.

I've also said that I don't think Tom Henderson is wrong with his info, but maybe his info could be wrong.

MS having no plans for a Pro console only affirms what I believe.
It'd be weird if a company like MS would not compete with a PS5 Pro, unless they REALLY are that incompetent in thinking they would crush PS5 with Series X.

So unless MS has some secret Pro release in the works without letting court know, I highly doubt Sony will release a Pro.

I am right there with you its odd to offer a model with the disk already attached

But technically it could allow them to run a single sku off the line then at the end of the process decided which model it is

Other than that

I hope this means the old ODD SKU will drop in price quite a bit next year so I can buy one for my niece & nephew and my side bitches.

I'm also confused by this
I thought they was having one SKU with a optional drive but instead they have two SKU's with the main one again being a Disc One and one with the option of a Disc drive add-on.
Doesn't look like Sony are giving up physical anytime soon.
In fact they're promoting it.
I don't know if you are trying to be funny or something.. but I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

They basically have only ONE model now. As far as manufacturing goes. The only difference is that they are still selling two packages. One with the PS5 on its own for $450, the other, is the PS5 + the ODD already bundled in $499 (digital model + ODD) which is the same price you pay for a ODD PS5 right now.

The way they are doing it now, is as if you are buying a PS5 with a game bundled in, only in this case, the bundle, if you so choose it, is the ODD. And their pricing reflects that, buy a stand-alone PS5, $450. Buy PS5 + ODD bundle, $500. By PS5 + ODD seperately, $530.

This is pretty much what I expected to happen, only difference is that I expected the ODD to cost more ($100) and expected the new PS5 to cost less ($399). But I did predict that you would be able to buy a new PS5 + ODD for $499, which was the price of the launch ODD PS5, which you can... just didn't expect them to have a bundle.

So your reasoning is the Pro can't exist because Microsoft would end up looking too incompetent? :pie_thinking: :pie_grinning_sweat: :messenger_grinning_sweat:
Oh they will.

All possible but also Andrew House said the main reason for the PS4 Pro was they had internal data that showed about mid gen people started moving to PC and the PS4 Pro was designed to try and prevent that and keep people in the Playstation ecosystem

Its just because your average buyer of a games console is a mum/gran, they already get hyper confused by their being a Digital vs ODD version, if you said yeah you buy this and then if you want to put discs in it you also buy this their heads would explode.

This makes no sense, if you want all that, then just buy the PS5 with ODD bundle that is still priced at the same price the OG ODD PS5 cost. $499.

If you are buying a digital version, not only does that mean you probably dont want to get discs (obviously) there is now at least the option for you to be able to make that a disc using PS5 in the future if you want.

And I don't get people, you have thin sony is running a charity? They can price this shit at what they are pricing it because people are buying them. If they find that sales are not as good as tey anticipate, they would drop the prices.

Thoughts on the PS5 DE increasing in price like I suggested it would?

Sure, they couldn't release an updated console just for VR, because just PR-wise that would effectively turn entry cost for PSVR into ~€800.

Most PR was about 4K and tbh, the percentage of console-gamers switching to PC for resolution is likely pretty insignificant.

Almost afraid to ask... How do you guys end up with fingerprints all over your ps5?

I regularly move my PS5 from my TV to my computer desk so I can stream games on it on Twitch. It’s often easier to have it up on the desk and connect it to the monitor for the camera and microphone setup. So if I had one of these the glossy panels would get dirty easily. But I doubt I’ll ever get one of these so it doesn’t matter.

So just to clarify, you think there isn't going to be a PS5 Pro? Just wanted to double check as I missed your first 400 posts saying that :messenger_winking:
You can always put me on ignore if you don't like to read me saying I think there won't be a PS5 Pro for 401+ posts.😉

The Pro was where I jumped in, I played a couple of games (Horizon and Uncharted 4) with a borrowed base PS4 and then the next year I got the Pro, probably would have just stayed on PC and skipped PS4 gen if it hadn't been for that because I got the PS4 Pro in mid-2017 after becoming a TV salesman and seeing how good Sony's 2017 4K TVs were, the (September) 2016 ZD9 was still current as well and that was the most amazing display (still is, 4K-wise) I had ever seen, but it was too expensive for me so when the XE90 and XE93 came out I decided I needed the new PS4 for the increased resolution output due to how good TVs were now.

Yup, you were spot on... Sony did a madness. Increased the price of what would become the One model on the market, but selling the ODD cheaper than I thought they would sell it.
But if you look at the bundle, then technically, it didn't increase in price, well, it still does but only by $20. But then again, the whole thing still costs the same as the current ODD PS5 variant right now.

This tells me they expect that most people would be buying the new standard PS5 without the disc drive.

Read everything I said, it's not even about Xbox specifically.

A Pro is happening, not only Henderson but other insiders already have info on the silicon.
You can't guess all the things he got including Slim with detachable disc drive, PS Portal and the earbuds.

The Pro has the purpose to offer to dedicated gamers the best possible technical experience which includes better graphics, frame rate, ray tracing performance and so on. It doesn't need a VR or new TVs as a reason to exist.
Also in the next years we're already seeing what will be the trend for current gen consoles, 30fps, wide use of FSR to hide internal resolutions dropping to PS3 era levels. Not everyone will be fine with that.

And what Microsoft will do is irrelevant, they're different companies taking different paths. For Microsoft console hardware is not a priority anymore. If you want better graphics than Series X you can buy a PC and they're fine with that as long as you're subscribing to GP.

I get what the purpose of a Pro is and I'm not necessarily against a Pro. I'd buy one if it's available.

I'm just saying I see absolutely no need for one and I can't imagine Sony not realizing this either.
A bunch of 'nerds' like us on gaming forums whining about a few extra fps and a higher resolution doesn't really seem like a good reason to me.

I think people may find it very difficult to find the standard edition moving forward. They'd much rather sell you the digital edition and force you to buy the drive separately.

I think the other model and the drive attachment are simply a way to get around regulators.

That's also assuming you don't have it vertical, which is an additional 30 dollars regardless of which version you get.

I really tried to stress that Sony understands how well the PS5 is selling, but that they aren't really making enough money off of it.

Assuming they can sell the 450-dollar DE at the same margin as the 500-dollar SE (original launch config) if not greater, than the excess margin they'll make on either higher digital sales or accessories will help tremendously in the long run.

They're going to sell new plates, disc attachments, and potentially stand.

That's a minimum of 80 dollars if you aren't able to find the bundle but upwards of 170 dollars extra.

I don't get people really, whats wrong with that? Its a damn stand, and anyone that takes a cursory look at the ODD attachment can see that compared to the OG PS5, it's been flattened out. Obviously to serve as a flat surface to be paced horizontally, which means all that you would need is something that attaches to the upper part now to keep it all level.

Funny thing is, this simpler approach is 100x better than the annoying multipurpose stand that comes with the OG PS5.

You yourself just said you'd buy one. I think the PS4 Pro ended up being like 20% of overall sales despite launching 3 years later.

It's not just gaming nerds on forums. If someone goes to buy a PS5 and they see a Pro version and it is only 150-200 dollars more and they can afford it, they'll drop the extra duckets.

Is there much reason between the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro? Why does anyone buy the Pro version?

I just feel like you're extremely off base with the reality here.

A Pro won't be about a bunch of extra fps though.
It will be about not giving up 60fps unless you want to play at 720p.
It will be about having a decent ray tracing implementation the current consoles just can't handle.
The bunch of nerds is a 10-20m business for Sony, something worth the R&D for the extra SKU which is obviously happening next year.

Another thing that convinces me a Pro is coming is a little story I told in the Pro thread that happened with me

Just say I was out to dinner with some fairly important local leaders from Southern IN and found out that Playstation uses a plant in Terre Haute IN to package all their consoles and most of their physical games.

While they didn't know why but I found out Sony is retooling one of their empty buildings there to produce packaging for something new and thats scheduled to come online next Summer.

Is that for the Pro? Maybe

Not exactly. The OG consoles have slight diferent internals. The physical version has some extra chips on the motherboard that allow the drive to work, while the Digital version is missing those chips, so if you want to attach a drive to the motherboard like the physical version, it will not work.

Now they have 1 manufactor sku, they are all the digital model. To retailers they will sell 2 skus one with the drive attached and other without.

The top is glossy......noooooo

Luckily I have my ps5s this looks minging and I don't understand the wording. No stand in the box?
I want to believe, that if a stand is needed for it to be placed horizontally, then that would come in the box, but if its somehow designed in a way that you can place it horizontally without a stand, then it wouldn't come with one. However, I believe the ODD attachment would come with a stand thingy for horizontal placement.

As for the vertical thing, I am sure like the PS5 model before it, and every PS since the PS2, if you really want to place it vertically you can do so without a stand. But yeah, if you want to be really cautious, then now you would have to buy a stand separately.

That top glossy part though, hopefully, they still sell faceplates which would mean Dbrand would make new pates too.
