New MacBook Pro leaked by Apple itself in latest macOS update

I know it has already been said, but what's up with them keeping the headphone jack in their computers if they are so insistent on calling it ancient and phasing it out of their phones. It seems like they are contradicting themselves by doing it.

Clearly the space taken up is far more valuable on a phone-sized device

Phones are simply more space conscious. They won't outright say it, but that's the reason.

Is it a guarantee that the 2015 models will have a price drop when the new ones release? Getting one as a gift and want to make sure I get the one with an SD slot and regular USB. If there is a drop coming I'll wait.

Quoting for new page. Anyone know?

But they didn't leave it at just "It saves space" when discussing why they removed it. They talked about how it was old technology and how they want to advance the industry by phasing it out in favor of wireless and lightning headphones. It'd be one thing if they just flatly said "It gives us more room for other components", but if they are going to talk about the headphone jack as being archaic and unnecessary than it seems silly to go ahead and keep it in the MacBook's.

If they're really doing the full combo of USB-C only, no function keys, shitty keyboard, and no GPU, I might just buy a 2015 model if the spec upgrade isn't huge.

I can guarantee it'll still have function keys, they'll just be on a touchscreen instead of physical buttons. I bet the amount of people who could press the right function key without looking is close to 0%, so I don't see the big deal in removing the physical keys. It will make the keyboard so much more useful.

Someone should remove the amount of money to be paid and shop in "your soul" instead.

Not really sure what lame joke you're trying to make, but Apple Pay on the web is going to be fantastic – no more credit cards stored on web site servers waiting to be stolen – and having Touch ID easily available on the Mac is icing on the cake.

No Escape key is a deal-breaker for me, unless the new touch-bar thing actually feels natural and can take a lot of abuse, like using Vim.

Are you joking? You realize the escape key is on that row right?

They really should have had an actual row of F-keys, with this touch bar on top.

As someone who never wants a Mac, that's actually a really cool idea.
Yeah, I guess if you see the machine as an interesting novelty, it looks like a cool idea. If you're using it to get stuff done instead of like a toy however, it could be detrimental. A lot of useful Photoshop keyboard shortcuts for example rely on F-keys, and I use them without looking at them.

I still hope the 15" one will have an F-key row plus this bar. There's enough space.

Have a lot of websites adopted Apple pay?

I know exactly where my F5 key is.
But yeah, I like the update.

Can't wait for the generation 2 of this. Hopefully I'll be headed into my MBA program by then--good excuse to drop so much money on it.

Wonder if they will release a new Air. Looking to pick up an ultrabook so it will be between the Air, XPS 13, and Razer Blade Stealth.

I'm sure it is. Very convenient. On my phone I use touch ID to pay with PayPal all the time.

"Touch ID to pay Apple YOUR SOUL"

Ha? Ha? Come on. Not even a giggle? Tough crowd tonight.

I bought one.

They're horrible, and you never get used to it. I'd still punch the person responsible clean in the face for it.

Literally the best keyboard I've ever used, and my current desktop rotation is an IBM buckling spring keyboard, a Topre Type Heaven, and a Apple Magic keyboard. I average 116wpm on my 2016 MacBook.

It's an amazingly designed keyboard. It takes a few days to get used to, but literally GOAT.

Really hope it's not the same keyboard as the MacBook. There's not enough travel in the keys and it's a step back for a "Pro" model if so.

Also... bummed about the lack of a physical Escape key. I hit Esc all the time when developing...

But... I'm going to wait until Thursday before deciding.

RIP esc

So I lose SD and HDMI and now I have to use a touch-strip to run SQL queries on my Windows VM?

Fuuuuuck, good thing my current model still feels fast enough for my needs.

Wait, no thunderbolt? So I'll need a new soundcard too then lol. Damn this new MacBook is disruptive but not in a cool market-shakeup way, more in a need-to-rebuy-all-new-shit-to-compensate way.

Sorry if i am vulgar and grotesque but:
This is bullshit and before making such statements full of shit you should check if you have some kind of spatial movement impairment or alternatively put the money where your mouth is and see if you are right or not.

I like Apple, a huge freaking lot, but the amount of mental gymnastic some people does to justify legitimate questionable decision Apple makes is incredible.

Because people aren't pulling apart their phones, they don't understand how space is at a premium in your mobile device. Those same pressures don't exist anywhere to the same degree for PCs, even in a slim laptop form factor. So they gussied up the reason. I mean, I'm sure a lot of people at Apple do believe in moving tech forward aggressively if painfully, but it's also easier to pitch something abstracted. There's "courage" in removing the port when it was in their way and obstructing them at every turn, and then there's stupidity in removing the port when it's not holding up their designs heavily and you're just going to get people howling for no good reason.

Not to mention you're never going to make a laptop waterproof or even moderately water resistant as long as you have a normal keyboard, so not like axing that port makes much of a difference there.

So no thunderbolt port?Fuck me and my Ethernet and vga adapter then.

Chain those adapters with the invariable TB2 -> TB3 Type-C adapter, or get dedicated Type-C adapters, and remember that depending on the adapter you get you'll be getting a highly future-proofed dongle that can work with USB as well, to take some of the sting out of needing more cables.

Doesn't Apple pay have a limit to the amount of money you can spend in a single checkout minus the App Store/iTunes and Apple.com?

I thought it was unlimited since it's just charging your card. I'm buying a new Casper mattress soon and they support Apple Pay, so we'll see how the almost $2000 charge goes

Like I said in the other thread: Love it. Glad that this matched the leak top cases, but why bring back the 'MacBook Pro' lettering on the display? I guess I can see how it can be used to advertise the product more, but it looks so much nicer without it.

I used a Lenovo think pad that had a contextual function strip. It was god awful.

I don't think you can compare Apples to Oranges. Apple is not going to release a subpar product at this price point.

So you're saying that you legitimately believe that the majority of the population doesn't need to look to find the function key they want before pressing it?

I'm a designer and video producer. I've spent the past five years working at a desktop 8 hours a day, including weekends. I've been primarily a PC gamer for the past 6 years. I was a CS major for two years. I touch type extremely fast and none of my keycaps have labels except for the function keys. I always have to check the function keys. Every time.

For those worried about the escape key: aside from it being almost certain that there will be an escape key on the touchscreen when you have, say, Terminal open, I noticed 10.12.1 added a new option to the Keyboard system preferences:

Now that's an interesting development

I agree they shouldn't have put the MacBook Pro label on the screen, it's tacky. Leave that shit for Samsung.

Don't agree with the apples and oranges comment tho, they're both contextually sensitive touchstrips above a laptop keyboard, it's about as close as apples to apples as you can get in this industry.
