New MacBook Pro leaked by Apple itself in latest macOS update

This design feels even more backwards than the iPhone 7. I simply fail to understand what is going on at Apple lately.

For those worried about the escape key: aside from it being almost certain that there will be an escape key on the touchscreen when you have, say, Terminal open, I noticed 10.12.1 added a new option to the Keyboard system preferences:

But anyone with any sense (or doesn't want crippling pinky cramps) already has that remapped to ctrl.

I don't mind the HDMI out being gone, since USB-C will do video out over whatever the hell you want, but for photographers I definitely understand how the loss of the SD slot sucks.

I'm more interested in audio/video stuff so I'm mostly just glad there's still a god damn audio jack. Four USB-C ports is plenty, especially since when you're at a desk you can hook up a hub, and there are plenty of USB-C hubs out there for reasonable prices.

2018 model will drop audio out. >:3

Spend $2k on a laptop and have to buy a bunch of dongles for your stuff to work on it, lol.

So you're saying that you legitimately believe that the majority of the population doesn't need to look to find the function key they want before pressing it?

I'm a designer and video producer. I've spent the past five years working at a desktop 8 hours a day, including weekends. I've been primarily a PC gamer for the past 6 years. I was a CS major for two years. I touch type extremely fast and none of my keycaps have labels except for the function keys. I always have to check the function keys. Every time.

Not the majority of the population but being able to press the function keys without looking is far from a supernatural ability, i still don't know how to reliably type without looking but i can press the right function key without looking more than 90% of the time.

Also sincerely you of all people should know that there are a great number of video editors that use those additional keypads for macros without looking which is much harder than doing that with the F-row.

Yeah, I guess if you see the machine as an interesting novelty, it looks like a cool idea. If you're using it to get stuff done instead of like a toy however, it could be detrimental. A lot of useful Photoshop keyboard shortcuts for example rely on F-keys, and I use them without looking at them.

I totally see this use case as well. I tend to use my laptop (Surface Book) primarily as an entertainment device so I personally wouldn't be concerned. You're definitely correct insofar as productivity apps though, it could be a detriment.

I agree they shouldn't have put the MacBook Pro label on the screen, it's tacky. Leave that shit for Samsung.

Don't agree with the apples and oranges comment tho, they're both contextually sensitive touchstrips above a laptop keyboard, it's about as close as apples to apples as you can get in this industry.

If you are looking at them as simply 'contextually sensitive touchstrips above a laptop keyboard' then yes, it is apples to apples. But Apple has a tightly integrated system with the software designed around the hardware in mind. This isn't going to be just some drivers thrown on top of the Windows shell and used as a selling point. Apple will not let this die and be unfunctional.

Apples & Oranges.

Ive's promotion means he no longer has anyone else to reign in his worst excesses.

How is this a Pro (as in, professional) grade laptop without even the minimum requisite ports actual professionals need? A phone has a very limited volume of space to allocate, so some of Apple's moves make sense there. But unless the battery in this thing is literally the entire internal body, I see no reason to remove the SD or HDMI (or Mag-Safe, for that matter).

Apple is so lost lately. OLED strip means I'm in, though. Love me some Touch ID to login.

For the past few years, with each successive product launch, Apple has been suggesting louder and louder that the professional market is one they have declining interest in. They would rather be known as a lifestyle brand that makes highly A E S T H E T I C devices above all else.

buying one anyway. haha

Are you talking about the function keys at the top or the actual "fn" key on Apple's keyboards? I can't believe that anyone I know can reliably hit the right key at the top without looking, except maybe esc.

I think this looks pretty though. I'll likely use it to change the volume and... that's about it, but it looks pretty. I'm confused why they're going to show battery on both the screen and the keyboard.

Apart from all the inevitable handshake and passthrough issue that'll occur and the fact that the newly announced HDMI Alt spec for USB-C > HDMI doesn't support 4K@60Hz or HDR.

Hmm maybe I'll upgrade to a 2015 MBP eventually, lol. I use my HDMI port and esc key quite a bit. Not a fan of the 12" MacBook keyboard, either.

I'm talking about F1 through F12 including Esc and the Eject/Power button, not the "fn" key.
They are the easiest shit to learn especially if you have to change song, dim or brighten the screen/buttons and raise and lower the volume multiple times every session when you use a MBP.

Will it still be possible to buy 2015 Macbook Pros after they announce the new generation? I want a new one but i want to wait for a price drop

I suppose if I was ever planning on hooking it up to a TV over HDMI that might be a problem, but pretty much any 4K computer monitor supports DisplayPort, which will drive at 4K@60Hz over USB-C just fine.

Yeah, not gonna lie, this feels like a "Pro" machine for posers.
- Keyboard that doesn't feel very robust or precise for typing.
- Lack of built in ports for the most basic of things (SD and HDMI were really nice and useful to have)
- Lack of physical F-keys and ESC. Although I can see the touchpad being useful in say, video editing, I wish the keys were there too.
- Tacky "MacBook Pro" logo to remind me that I'm a PRO!

I hope 15" model will have at least some of the above improved.

This was brought up in the even thread, but it looks good and the only thing I am worried about is the keyboard feel.
You won't feel anything.

Perhaps I'd get used to it if I had to keep using it, but I personally think the new keyboards are shit.

Looks great. Touch ID is going to be awesome and the OLED bar seems way better than a function row. Also bezels look a bit better and I expect it to be a lot thinner. Hopefully base storage is on point.

Loss of HDMI kind of sucks but I dig the rest. (Would have also liked to have a single USB A port but force progress whatever)

I'm pretty sure the SD card slot on my Pro is broke so I've just been using the USB port on the camera to transfer photos for years now.

Sadly I agree.

I really disliked the new Keyboard hopefully this is a rev.02. At the moment if this has quad core KabyLake I'm in to buy highest end custom 15" model. Gonna wait and see how things pan out. Might wait till next year to upgrade my current 15" rMBP.

Also, for people that are truly disappointed I guess your best Alternative option PC side would be the new Razer Blade line.

Apart from all the inevitable handshake and passthrough issue that'll occur and the fact that the newly announced HDML Alt spec for USB-C > HDMI doesn't support 4K@60Hz or HDR.

If you want 4K@60Hz you'll do it over Thunderbolt 3.

A good thing is Intel has baked in support for “DisplayPort Alternate Mode” alongside Thunderbolt™ 3 in their Alpine Ridge and later chipsets. This adapter converts that DisplayPort Alternate Mode signal to HDMI 2.0. So most future systems based on Intel’s latest chipsets (6th gen and later) will have this capability, as long as the motherboard maker has routed one of the Intel chipset’s 3 outputs to the USB-C port.

...

Some of the more popular current systems that support DisplayPort Alt Mode are the Apple Retina MacBook 12″ (2015 and 2016, limited by Apple to 4K@30Hz), Google Chromebook Pixel (2015), Dell XPS 9350 and 9550 (13″ and 15″), Lenovo Yoga 900 13″, and Razer Blade Stealth, with many more new systems to be released this year and beyond. We recommend checking with your system’s manufacturer regarding Alternate Mode capability via USB Type-C or on our USBC-HDMI product page as we update compatibility information as more systems are coming out and tested.

All USB c for a Pro device seems premature. I think you either go without ports or, if you have them, at least offer a variety of them.

The MacBook makes sense to only have one port since its a super consumer focused product (when it gets cheap at least) but this seems weird.

Edit: my idea of going MacBook + desktop PC in the future seems like the best one to me.

Every time? I never have to look at Esc, F1, F5, F9-F11 (F10 and F11 are brightness for my keyboard keys) which are the main ones I use....

Also, this OLED strip is utterly pointless, something that could easily break or go wonky compared to the easiness of just having freaking Function keys. Having no ESC key is inexcusable even if you are going with the no function keys/OLED strip.. The power button also substituting as Apple Pay/fingerprint reader would have been enough of a change for the added functionality.

One port never makes sense. One port should be used for charging, you should have other ports open for other things even if it does in the end require a dongle for backwards compatibility. Having a single port with multiple chains of dongles is a nightmare.

I dig it. Wish it was in addition to the top row of keys though. I don't feel right losing the physical ESC button or the function row.

I bet they are going to show off some pretty cool stuff with the touch bar though. Spotify songs, scrubbing through youtube videos, maybe even IM popups on the OLED.

No SD-card, no regular USB, no normal F-keys .... Hmm, I'm just not a fan of the design decissions Apple is making. I don't think I'd upgrade to a new Macbook Pro anymore, I'm sporting a late 2013 model which is still going strong. The idea of a touch bar doesn't really excite me either.

No dedicated video out or SD card slot.... yeah soooo "pro".

Jesus christ.

You guys are acting like Macbook Pro are a new product tier. What the fuck? HDMI port? SD? What past model are you referring to? How is the 'Pro' in Macbook Pro suddenly tacky?

The only thing I use my ports for is plugging a keyboard, mouse and an Ethernet cable sometimes. If I'm using a MacBook I'm probably not at my desk so I don't need any ports. I would also use an hdmi port if my MacBook Pro had one.

I don't need ports for any of my daily tasks, one port is enough when it makes a computer super thin and light.

In this case the "all USB c" doesn't give me anything so I think it's dumb.
