New MacBook Pro leaked by Apple itself in latest macOS update

I've thought about this leak...honestly, the only reason I want to buy a mac now is the OS. In the past it was a mix of hardware and the OS, but now? Only b/c MacOS.

aaaand new page. fml.

Huh. I didn't even realize the ESC button would go missing. That's a big chance, my hand is fairly automated to use it almost instinctively at this point.

Will it be in the touch thingy now? That can work, but will definitely require a learning curve.

bind that shit to caps lock for easier access. esc in the top-left is in fucking no man's land, and who seriously uses caps lock on a regular basis?

You know how the Esc key is in the top left on literally every keyboard ever? Try changing your QWERTY layout to the QWERTZ layout for one device only.
Apple's "it just works" philosophy is turning more into a "make it work" philosophy.
Let's not forget, that this is a company trying to sell you a product, so it's their job to show us why it's a better product than the one we already own.

I've made caps lock into a super modifier key (shift + ctrl + alt + cmd) that I can assign to anything without worrying about existing shortcuts. I use it in combination with the cursor keys for window management.

The ±/§ key on the top left though, I never use that one. That can be my new escape key.

Does anyone here use Pages? Why the fuck does it not auto-capitalise? It drives me up the wall, even Shift+letter is cumbersome when typing usually.

Anyway, I'm liking the look of this new MacBook tbh. You'll get the esc key on the OLED strip and is obviously a contextual strip so keys will disappear when Apple Pay is being used.

The removal of ports shouldn't be surprising to anyone either.

So now Macs can't even turn on. Great. Just great. Well done, Apple.

My Windows PC has three escape keys. Check out this comparison chart of specs. Welcome to 2013, Apple. Next year's model will have a touchscreen, water resistance, and NFC integration.

is [the MacBook Keyboard] really that bad?

Yes. And it's not so much that "it's really that bad," it's that you're taking an industry leading keyboard that virtually everybody adores, and replacing it with a keyboard that is very divisive. Some people, in this thread even, said "After a week I got used to it," and "I liked it after using it for a couple weeks," which is great for them, but virtually nobody has had that response to the (Old?) MacBook Pro keyboard, which virtually everybody instantly loves when they use it.

And I just don't really know what the justification is on a professional line of computers. I absolutely get it when you're making the slimmest iPad competitor notebook computer, and I think that's a fine compromise when it's slimness uber alles, but I don't get it as much for a pro line, where form is certainly important, but form shouldn't trump function in all ways. We'll see. Maybe the justification to remove something people generally like won't be "courage" this time.

It's a personal thing. It doesn't bother me in the slightest but others make it out to be like a turd in your cheerios. I got used to it within a week, like using touchscreen keyboards.

i've used the macbook as my main computer since it came out last spring and i'm still not used to it. i love everything about the macbook except this, which i violently hate.

if you care one iota about key tactility and response, you will probably hate it too. me, i use it in clamshell mode with a blue-switch mechanical keyboard 90% of the time, and use my ipad pro for portable typing because somehow its keyboard cover is more comfortable than the macbook.

*however* i think the new wireless magic keyboard, which also uses the same butterfly key mechanism but with far deeper travel, is actually pretty great and much better than any apple laptop. if the macbook pro feels like that it'll be a legit upgrade.

The Magic Keyboard actually just uses scissor switches, as I understand it. That said, it does *look* nearly indistinguishable from the 12" MB keyboard, so for all we know the MBP is using something more like the Magic Keyboard.

ah yeah you're right. the magic keyboard does feel "stable" in the same way that the macbook butterfly switches do, at least.

i guess i don't see why the magic keyboard couldn't be in a macbook pro for thinness reasons, so hopefully that's the way they go.

My daughter does this too. Figured it was a young person thing, like walking with your phone on speaker talking into the mic.

A 31 year old friend of mine does the same. A guy who has had a computer for like 25+ years and back when you took typing in elementary school.

Always struck me as bizarre.

I was kinda interested until I heard it has one of those DISGUSTING 3.5mm jacks.

Please help me articulate my disgust by spitting at this spot on your screen:

I've had a MacBook since launch with the adapter running a 1440p HDMI ASUS monitor every day in the office and haven't had a single issue with it. What didn't work for you?

Video. Which is a fairly big issue.

(Less fallaciously, it's obviously not just me. The thing has the second lowest rating of any product I can see on the Apple Store http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MJ1K2ZM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter. I believe there are two main issues - HDMI doesn't function correctly after the a connected machine wakes up due to problems with the power saving implementation, and the HDCP sync is simply not to spec on the audio component, and therefore causes significant errors for TVs.).

Just got this snapchat from a friend lol

I'm thinking real hard about picking up one of the last of the 2015 Pros and using that to replace my aging Mini. My 2012 11" Air is still going strong, and I have no complaints about it.

Apple seems totally uninterested in selling computers that aren't permanently wedded to their displays at this point.

The OLED strip can be a nice gimmick to see incoming texts or Caller ID.

I worry that it might become adspace for some apps.

Also, is the power button no longer a mechanical button? That would seem like a step in the wrong direction.

Nope, some key that actually needs to be pressed often deserves that location. Back when I settled on my keyboard layout I was a very heavy Vim editor user, but even I wouldn't put Esc there, I went with Ctrl instead.

Removing physical Esc and function keys is an insane decision on a "professional" product.

What do you guys think about pricing? Same structure or they gonna jack up the pricing?

If rumors of the discontinued 11" Air are true I think

Lowered Pricing : current Macbook
Increased Pricing: 13" Macbook/MBA, 13" MBP
Same Pricing: 15" MBP

I doubt it will change drastically. The only recent time there was a significant bump was the retina models in 2012, generally the trend is for (Apple and general) computers to get cheaper or stay at the same price points.

The only major possible change has more to do with what's around the MBPs (whether the rMB are cheap enough now to start replacing the Airs) than the MBPs themselves.

Are the F1, F2, F3, etc keys a part of this magic tool bar as well?
Surely. But those keys on a Mac already come as secondary function needing the fn key to be used.

I'm positive there will be options for whoever wants F keys as primary input.

This will be the first time using a Barclaycard not sure if I should wait a week so my payments start at the begining of the month or order the new macbook pro today if available :/

I wonder if only mac app store apps will be able to use the magic bar
Hopefully it'll be smart and be an open API as long as the dev has a certificate. That I can live with. iCloud used to only be accessible to App Store apps but now you can use it as long as you're certified. Like 1Password who only used to have iCloud backup if you bought the app off the store, which I hadn't, but a few versions ago Apple opened it up to everyone, probably because they gave up thinking the App Store was going to magically become widely used on a platform where anyone can install anything they want from anywhere.

oh thats a good sign then, perhaps it will work like iCloud

Yeah I remember that change. Apple realized that it's more important for developers to use their services than be in the Mac App Store

Yeah, dont quote me, but just hope. Because fuck, I dont even have all my apps on the store. In most cases I hate the store. So they better be smart. Though I could see it being limited and locked at first like iCloud was. But let's hope not.

My assumption is that there will be a modifier key (probably the 'fn' key), that when held down will switch the bar back to the system-level ESC and Fn keys.

Just had to say that I called it on this. 🙃 All that whining about the Fn keys being gone were of course baseless.

I said that too. I mean it's how the keyboard works now. And I'm sure that the option to swap the Fn functionality will still be in the OS so you can have the F-keys visible by default. At least I guess you will. I can't wait for people to start doing hands on videos of it.

It's just a shame it's basically just a glorified toolbar with multitouch that only exists because Apple refuses to take the time to make macOS touch capable. And I understand why, but eventually they're gonna have to crack... right? I would think with how well Apple handles UI design and flexibility in Xcode, creating a OS that could automatically resize UI elements when needed would be super simple. Half their work is already done. I'm sure they just don't want to cannibalize their iOS baby. Especially since they have more control over it and what people put on it and know if they ever removed the ability to install whatever you want on macOS completely, people would demand their head on a stake.

I still want one though. So hopefully by next years model they'll have gotten the prices back down. I can dream right?
