So much trolling and disrespect in this thread... oh well, I guess freedom of speech before anything.
Its a plea for attention, same as that french wikipedia site getting vandalized. Nothing more, nothing less.

Some people just cant handle the fact that nobody gives a shit about their views on religion, so it gets louder, more vocal, and more harsh and derisive, in hopes that someone will pay attention to it.

I wonder what he’s giving up for Lent. We know it’s not “becoming pope”.

Jonathan Pryce conventions, as posted earlier:

It sure beats the pants off of the excommunication of heretics, witch trials, and the inquisition.

I think Catholics have to wait 50 years before there's a more liberal Pope.
It looks like this guy has some baggage as well.

Outside of the gay adoption one, he sounds like a good choice. Hopefully he can clean house inside the Vatican.

Yep. It's baffling how many gaffers can't get past the gay issues and physical appearance and actually consider the deeper implications of this pope choice (or the previous for that matter).
Isn't it easy to go "ROFL homophobe! Pedo! Villain, just look at his eyes!" and knowing absolutely nothing of the topic. We all know of the situation concerning gay rights, contraception etc. within the church, so expecting an openly liberal candidate to be elected is a bit naive.

Yes, we've all had a lot of fun with the previous pope's appearance and now this one's, me included, but Benedict turned out good in my book. If they manage to clean the house (which is apparently the plan), then I see no problems.

Or ya know, the church and the pope himself are deserving of harsh criticism.

I wouldn't say 50 years. If This new Pope makes a mess of things, or even sees drastic decline in followers under his reign, it might swing the tide in reformers favour the next time around. Unless of course this Pope lives until 2063, in which case, you're right.

Then quote them directly and call them out, it's not hard.

A leader of a huge religion speaking out against civil rights is a huge deal even if the church has had this issue for a long time.

Do you understand people have different views of the world? Is that so hard for haters to accept? And dont start calling me, I have yet to start a debate about this sort of things. I consider myself a listener before an speaker. I don't push things as biggots atheists try.

As for church mistakes, they should be punished with the law in hand. Does that mean church should be burned in fire? not to me and millions.

Some Random trivia facts about Pope Francis
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/13/new-pope-thirteen-key-facts

• He likes to travel by bus.

• He has lived for more than 50 years with one functioning lung. He had the other removed as a young man because of infection.

• He is the son of an Italian railway worker.

• He trained as a chemist.

• He is the first non-European pope in the modern era.

• He claims that adoption by homosexuals is a form of discrimination against children but believes that condoms "can be permissible" to prevent infection.

• In 2001 he washed and kissed the feet of Aids patients in a hospice.

• He speaks fluent Italian, as well as Spanish and German.

• Until now he has been living in a small flat, eschewing a formal bishop's residence.

• He told Argentinians not to travel to Rome to celebrate if he was appointed but to give their money to the poor instead.

• He is believed to have been the runner-up in the last papal conclave in 2005.

• He has co-written a book, in Spanish, called Sobre el Cielo y la Tierra (On Heaven and Earth). You can buy it on Kindle.

• Though conservative on church doctrine, he has criticised priests who refuse to baptise babies born to single mothers.
Does having one lung lower the life expectancy?

There's so much fucking blood on the hands of the church that it's pretty much gone beyond the reach of the law and typical punishment. Burning the whole thing to the ground sounds fantastic to me. No-one's faith is robbed, just the entire evil business built up around that faith.

Different views? It's homophobia and it should not be accepted.

I wasn't calling you out, I was saying instead of saying 'people in this thread' just quote and engage them.

Using the term 'biggot atheist' while defending a bigot pope and bigot church is hilarious.

They should be punished by law, but haven't and I don't think anyone in here was rallying to burn down churchs.

You've gone mad.

People have different views of the world. Some of those people are wrong about historical facts. And others have ethically problematic ideas vis-a-vis a modern view of human rights.

There's trolling and disrespect present in virtually every topic on GAF, whether it's about games, celebrities, sports, movies, politics, television etc. Welcome to the internet. Religion is not and should not be considered to be on a different plane where it cannot be criticised, mocked, trolled or treated any differently to the aforementioned topics.

I take it from your exasperated tones that you're not particularly fond of freedom of speech when it goes against your beliefs. Either ignore the disrespectful comments and get on with your life, or better yet, attempt to understand why people are reacting in the manner in which they are, address them directly and try to change their attitude toward the Catholic Church. Don't get pissy because someone rips on your little club; that just makes you look weak and pathetic.

I don't see why I have to hold some sort of innate respect for virtually anyone/anything, regardless of their actions. Freedom of speech and human rights are concepts that (imo) apply in a universal manner. Respect is something has to be earned.

Until they are able to get the law back under their control...

Many 'bigot' atheists are looking out for your best interests too, who knows if your sect is going to be deemed heretical in the future. There is a reason the Church killed Priscillian and not Marcion, it's because it took them a few hundred years to eek their power into authoritative roles so could kill their 'enemies'.

People have a 'right' to believe stupid things, and others have a right to tell them that they don't agree, and that we should be working to make the world a better place. Criticizing established institutions with histories of abuse of power is a great start.

Organized religion deserves more vitriol then it ever gets, especially one that hid child rapists and abuse for this long.

If your religion can't withstand the scrutiny given to a gritty reboot of a children's cartoon, then maybe it's all bullshit.

This is fucking horseshit and you know it. Gaf gives a wide fucking berth to religion trolling that isn't tolerated in any other topic on this forum.

Nice, then point the fingers to each one guilty, not the whole church.

The church's system of secrecy and being above the law is why it was so easy to abuse people for centuries and why it still is. And people put money in the coffers. So no, the entire thing has to be criticized.

But this is bizarre. Clearly there's an institutional problem here. Likewise on civil rights; it's silly to think that the problem is that Popes just keep happening to be anti-gay and anti-woman. There would need to be massive institutional change to get a morally decent Pope next time around. Advocating for that kind of institutional change is perfectly acceptable, and it's not unreasonable to think that the Church basically needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

You cannot be more wrong. Just because something is done wrong every times, that does not make it suddenly good now. I'm all for freedom, else I would not be here sharing. But how is asking some respect bad now? That's something every human should try to practice. BTW when did I asked for church be treated with higher standards?

I still find odd how liberal Mods are regarding such posts in this thread. Just look at a few pages to see what I'm talking.

It's one thing to have a different view or opinion, I support this 100% but offending, cursing and just post random rude things is okay?

It seems to be okay like that in a Religion thread, I remember a GAFfer on the "Show us your gaming setup: 2013 Edition" (a thread I do like to get inspiration from) getting banned because he said the someone's setup looked like a "gay sitcom" and after that he apologized but people kept hitting on him. He was banned. Some things in here made people ultra offended and Mods will ban those, on religion threads seems very different.

This is fucking horseshit and you know it. Gaf gives a wide fucking berth to religion trolling that isn't tolerated in any other topic on this forum.

I believe this is correct. Politics thread, Gay threads are examples of this. Very few things are tolerated in there.

Asking for respect isn't wrong, but the pope and the church doesn't deserve it.

Then in the end, what IS respected? Every single person , entity, group, community be it good bad great evil is game to be disrespected for the sake of freedom of speech, there is no boundry then for disrespect, if that is freedom
Of speech then so be it and gives proof of what John Kerry said, many people have the right to be stupid because frankly, thats the cost of freedom
