Lol. You people are nuts. This is excellent news.

You get a thriving online community, with lots of post launch content, paid for by folks who want to buy cosmetic MTX.

Sure, if it's just that. But this is EA, I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm okay with this. As long as they don't block main functionality such as tricks behind a pay wall.

I bet that changing the color of the most basic skate shape will be monetized. No way in hell I'll buy this bullshit. EA has proved has time and time again that they will fuck it up and that money will dictate if this game will endure or not.

Yeah I don't even care about it being f2p. I just wanna skate around in a nice open world.

EA, what are you doing? Not even indie skating games like session and skater xl are free to play. People will gladly pay 59.99 for the full skate experience.
They don't want to settle for making a mean of $60 per player when they can go free to play and have the mean player spend well over $100

Apex Legends.

Also, I agree with the poster you've quoted. There's no way to actually pay to win for a skateboarding game because it's too skill based, so the worst you'll get is cosmetic MTX. On top of that the franchise doesn't immediately die by costing 60-70 dollars. Everyone wins this way. All it literally has to do is just be good and not be as barebones and as broken as Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5.
Until it comes out that there are different boards that improve your Ollie height, flip speed, manual, etc

It would be way more work to implement and balance around this rather than just slapping gold or chrome on a skateboard and charging 10 dollars for it as a limited time offer.

They also own Pop Cap and Glu Mobile (with it a hefty $70m in shares of ubisoft)...they know what they are doing when it comes to GaaS offerings.

This is why its sometimes better to let things stay dead rather than have them come back and be corrupted by the modern worlds bullshit.

Not surprised to be honest. I think it will still be a fun time. It really just looks like a big goofy sandbox for people to fuck around in which would probably steer more people away as a full priced title.

There might be potential in this but calling this "excellent news"? And what's with the assumptions like this having a "thriving" community? We've barely heard anything about the game. Jesus mate.

As for the game's business model, Mocquard said the microtransactions are primarily going to be about cosmetics and convenience.

The magic word that stands out here is "convenience", and what that means to the devs vs what that means for the player.

I'm worried about this but not for the same reason as most of you.
I couldn't give a fuck about f2p - but for skate, that means appealing to the mainstream crowd, and that means skate 3 style mega ramps, dumb Tony hawk flips and magical magnetic grinds.

There's absolutely no way this is going to be the grounded, realistic back to the roots reboot I was hoping for.
Fortunately session releases in the fall and I can play the first 2 on a 360 emulator.

Any game that can be described with “EA” and “free to play” in the same sentence goes straight into the thrash for me.

But what if I play and I don't purchase anything?
Do it. I'll support most GaaS games with hundreds of dollars - as long they practice fair play. No paywalls and pay to win elements.

EA has proven themselves with Apex legends. Greatest F2P battle royale out there.

GaaS and F2P is the future and it's glorious for all players - from the poorest to the richest.

Edit: Why the empathy reaction March Climber March Climber - I'll happily support developers who support their games for years to come. No other games are getting support after 2 years unless they're GaaS and then people start crying about it or demand a sequel. Me and others will pay so all can play.

Wouldn't you rather play a game free of ads and microtransactions? You're also operating on the assumption EA is being totally honest on the paywall stuff. More users still equals incentivizing they move forward with this model.

It's a 50/50 coin flip. Either they go the FIFA route or they go the Apex route. I'm thinking the Apex route, and it looks like you're thinking the FIFA route. I guess we will see.

Nobody’s going to monetize basic character creation stuff.

They’ll make their bucks from outfits, limited edition skateboards, dances etc.

Oh, so P2W trash then. Good to know that I can skip it.

It’s clearly stated in the OP by the devs that there will be no P2W mechanics in the game. Not sure how you’d do that in a skateboard game anyway.

This type of game lends itself quite well to cosmetic MTX. Zero need to go to P2W stuff

Live service? Doesn't that mean the game will no longer be accessible when they stop supporting it? Major bummer if true. I'd rather have a stand alone 60 dollar game.

There is a chance that a skate game as a service would work with community engagement and fair prices. Skateboards and Skateboarders are destined to change their clothes and gear, but EA really needs to be fair here and don't try to milk whales for multiple hundred or thousand of dollars.

However it is EA we are talking about and now it kinda looks like they found passionate devs to make the game, but the suits that greenlit this project probably have some nasty strings attached.

Ugh we will wait and see. Would be a good fit for cosmetics only. Maybe community designed cosmetics where EA profits 10-30% of each sale on a community store or something.

EA should really use this game as a turning point. People are not mad about cosmetics in free2play games. Everyone is well aware that the developers need to be paid and the entire machine needs money too to work, but there is no reason to turn this into some predatory shit unless EA wants to win worst company of the year again.
At the Berrics they would say Lets keep it clean, lets keep it lean

A free to play skateboard game where u have to GRIND your way to unlock a silly hat
or buy it for 1,99

People seem to forget that free to play games are build around sucking your wallet dry instead of having meaingfull deep and rewarding gameplay, there will be constant reminders that u can buy stuff instead of grinding. New silly cosmetics will be the focus of the game, dont be deceived that they build this around gameplay and fun. Else it could have been a 60$ game with NO MTX at all.

Oh and watch them pull the plug after a year annd say goodbye to all your purchased virtual vanity items, u never owned them in the first place, u thought u did coz u paid for them but all u did was give ea money in exchange of a few texture files on your skate model u wanted to have because of FOMO

As long as I have an area to freeskate in I don't give a fuck to be honest. I don't care about a career mode etc, I just like to play it as a skateboard expression tool. I just hope I can have my character in a white T, baggy blue jeans and some decent shoes. Good to go, I won't be dropping money on cosmetics.

Would be funny if you had to pay admission into the in game skateparks. Yo EA there's an idea for you. :D

Can we just go back to EA not making a Skate sequel? I liked that better, let the series die with dignity.

Is it too difficult for these motherfuckers to make a good game and then sell it for $60-70?

Guaranteed its going to be a pile of wank with predatory microtransactions galore and idiots will defend it because "it's freeee".

EA's new Skate is going to be a live-service free-to-play skateboarding game
Of course it had to be another addition to the list of shitty GaaS. EA just couldn't not avoid to fuck it up.

I mean you could buy wheels that have 5 stars in speed and control.

Trucks with 5 stars in balance.

A board with 5 stars in controls and spin.

Then you go enter the meet up tournaments and smoke those suckers playing for feee.

EA is just looking out for the gamer that can’t afford to buy a game but can afford a $5 skin 100 times. They have the gamers interest at heart and are the best gaming company.

Yes, there’s absolutely nothing to imagine that a game with $0 entry cost will have more players than one at $60.

One assumes the baseline that the game will turn out good. If it doesn’t, then it’d have still been a flop at $60.

Skate is still somewhat niche these days. Going F2P provides a chance for a bigger launch population.
