New Sonic Mania Footage, Mirage Saloon Zone + Tails and Knuckles Gameplay

We just got Stardust Speedway though. I'm kinda bored of racing Metal Sonic

Yeah, anything that was already done in Generations shouldn't be showing up here too, unless we're getting more than a level per game.

I mean, we will surely get Chemical Plant, but I'd rather Mystic Cave?

Man I was wondering if Taxman was going to reuse Desert Dazzle concept from his Sonic CD remaster. Looks fantastic.

Don't get the giant sprite complaints either; everything is bigger in Texas after all!

This game continues to look fantastic. Tails and Knuckles looks great and Mirage Saloon is incredible with the use of its theme and level gimmicks overall.

Absolutely torn on doing an intentional media blackout and seeing even more of the game (maybe just another remixed old level, and then that's it). Really hoping it gets a retail release.

Yeah I would rather get that too. A part of me wants Aquatic Ruin, though, just because it's my favorite track from 2

Took Sega best part of 20 years to create something like this game..which is Sonic 4 for all intents and purposes..

Imagine if Saturn had this as one of its key launch titles, seeing as the Saturn was a 2d powerhouse it would have been perfect instead of trying to get Xtreme to be on that machine which was Sega's response to Mario 64...but clearly the Saturn had its work cut out in the 3d department...

Now all we need is a Streets of Rage 4 to get this treatment...

So she confirmed there's 7 remixed Zones. There's 14 levels right there since assuming all have 2 acts. Assuming there's 7 new zones that's 24 levels. Let's throw in that there's probably two smaller hidden zones when you get all the chaos emeralds, that's 26.

Where did they say this? I've watched a couple of times and can't find it

He knows nothing about 2D Sonic games.

HE CALLED THE RINGS COINS

The levels look fantastic, though.

Yeah, it annoyed me that he said that he was a huge fan, but any real fan would've started flying immediately the minute he starts playing with Tails (he also didn't know you could fly)

It bugged me that the guy playing is like, "I a big 2D Sonic fan" and then immediately needs to be told that Tails can fly and asks if you can switch characters mid zone.
yeah this really bothered me for some reason, kinda discrediting himself right away, or lying?

So, when do they announce the Saturn port?

Related, I hope there is a 4/3 setting, for the old-school feeling.

If he's played a billion hours of Sonic 2 and not as much Sonic 3 it would make perfect sense, so... i don't see a problem?

I suppose. It would just be a very rare edge case of someone being really into Sonic 2, but not playing Sonic 3 literally at all. (Electric shield double jumps, aqua shield bounce, etc).

IIRC, it shouldn't be that rare considering the sales of the games.

I might be misremembering, but I thought Sonic 2 had the highest exposure of any Sonic game by far.

The scan lines are a pain but are usually an option so at least I'd be able to turn them off. I hope we get some video with no commentary so you can hear the music of the new zone. There's also no boss at the end of the new zone even though it was act 2. I wonder if it's something to do with the robot cowboy in the pictures. Still everything looks great and is scratching a very particular itch like no other Sonic game has in over 20 years...

I'd say the most frustrating thing is that this is the first time this level and these characters have been playable and he decides to play Studiopolis twice and Sonic twice while only giving Tails and Knux one go each. The rep was pointing out how Knuckles could break walls in Mirage Saloon and find different paths but he wasn't curious enough to check that out; gotta play as Sonic in Studiopolis again!

This is amazing.

I wonder if any of the other new Zones are going to be based on some of the famous beta/scrapped/lost Zones of Sonic's history?
Wood Zone? Cyber City Zone?

There's some opportunities for some really awesome callbacks to beta versions of Zones we're familiar with, too.
Let's see some neon signs in Green Hill Zone, or some UFOs in Marble!
Cyber City ended up getting made into Metropolis act 3. They used the visuals planned for Cyber City in The Machine from Spinball. It'd be cool if they made a zone that looked like that; The Machine is my favorite level in Spinball.

Looks amazing, still. Love the desert stage, terrific art.

Also today I learned that Miles Prower = Miles Per Hour. Seems obvious in retrospect.

The shading on the characters is way, way overdone. Knuckles is practically pink and all the characters have a desaturated plastic-y look that's gross and not particularly Sonic-esque.

That may have been something of a throwback to Knuckles Chaotix, and even in S3&K, he had a slight pink hue. (An aspect the EU/NA box went full tilt on)
I do agree that it does look odd, though.

Taxman on Sonic Retro: "No Woody Zone sorry! Mirage Saloon was an obvious choice since Desert Dazzle didn't get its time to shine, and Dust Hill is legendary. But our other new Zones are focusing on new tropes entirely."

O_O At the beginning of the video, was that a shoutout to Sonic 2's original level select+cheat code/debug menu!? Holy shit...i remember on genesis spending hours and hours on trying to input the super sonic and debug codes

But i have an issue, what is with the weird filter in the video? It seems like the gameplay is washed out for example...and there are small lines everywhere...

I'm a fan of the aesthetic personally.

This was Chaotix on 32x:

While a spinoff, until Mania I always saw this as the closest thing to an evolution of the classic 2D games.

Sonic and Knuckles' sprites definitely seem to be veering in this direction.

I'm very much digging the aesthetics of Mirage Saloon, there is indeed a Saloon.
Though I guess it would be hoping too much for Sonic to be washed down tubes of booze ala Hydrocity Zone.
